Just got a replacement Evo today and really wanna root and flash CM7 or MikFroyo, but my laptop is getting repaired and I was wondering if it was possible to root by downloading and flashing files right on the phone?? I know this is a longshot....lol....Please no flamers.....
I looked around for the same thing a while back before rooting and didn't have any luck. I think you need the computer. I'm pretty much a n00b so I could be more than wrong here.
Yeah, something like jailbreakme.com for the iphones. I hear ya. I haven't seen anything come up on any blogs, or anywhere on this forum. (and i assume they'd be among the first to know)
sorry mate!
Not as of yet, at least not permanently. There's a program called z4root but doesn't make it permanent. As soon as you reboot the phone it's back to stock. I'd just be patient and wait for your laptop. In the meantime keep doing your research and reading about the different problems you may run into, etc. That way you'll be prepped for almost anything. I read about rooting for about three months before actually doing it, best choice with the phone other than the initial purchase.
1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.
HELP!!!

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

I just thought you would have to re-root. Sucks...

next time keep the S-off buddy and you can get back a custom recovery and all that jazz. sorry that you are stuck for now, but i'm pretty sure with all the awesome devs around that you'll be able to root gingerbread pretty soon
No, it's not snide.... Just since replying to your post, I've read 5 more form people doing the same thing just tonight, and if I REALLY want to sit here and copy and paste all night, I can point out a friggin' boatload of posts from people who unrooted.

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

On a side note this is important to all of us.. What about all the 2nd gen phonea that are coming with s on and stock 2.3" .. Htc may say that they arent encrypting bootloadrra, but if we cant root that means sh_t.... Again this is beyond me, but at least lets focus on what needs to be done... This was the first ota that came out since I rooted...now i have learned what not to do...and didn't know that the rooted versions pop up so quickly...hopefully they will release a new ota with the bootloader unlocked...and soon

Who and why are they gay? I thought this was about learning, manipulating and using new technology and software....can't we just be helpful instead of this? It's useless....someone may have done as I did and now have to read through and spend more time on this BS to get to the possibility of a solution.
So are you thinking that the refurbished phone will have a newer firmware? I don't know about that but it doesn't seem to make sense....is that some thing like asurion would do? And if you do get a new snazzy updated phone are you promising to donate your time to the cause??? Lol

I'm thinking about getting a new phone. Maybe someone can offer me some info to help me choose. I have a htc evo 4g now. I've been thinking bout rooting it. But a new phone might just be better. I really like my htc though so I was thinking bout a evo 3d maybe. Possibly another brand. I'm not much of a fan of motorola or samsung. But they seem to be getting better. I want to have wifi tethering so I know i'll have to root if I stay with htc. I really like the sense 3.0 my gf has on her evo 3d. The other thing is the ram for storing apps. I only have 512 with my evo and even less is usable. My toshiba thrive has 3gb, I've heard app space is all in the software. Is there a possibility to get a rom that runs sense 3.0 with ics? Would this give me more room to store more apps as well? Thanks.
Edit: My sprint contract is almost up. I think the beginning of july. I don't know if I'm going to stay. Might take whatever phone I get to boost or something.

I would definitely NOT recommended upgrading to an Evo 3D. Wait for the Evo 4G LTE if you want to stick with the Evo line. There are other, better phones out there than the 3D, even from other manufacturers.
As for rooting your current Evo 4G, there are Sense 3.0 roms available. I don't believe there are any ICS + Sense 3.0 roms, but I don't keep up with Sense at all. If you need more app storage, you can always partition your SD card and use the SD-Ext partition to store apps & data. You do, of course, need to be rooted to take advantage of an ext partition. Without partitioning, the Sense 3.0 roms will actually leave you with less storage space. AOSP roms will generally give you more space. With a decent sized SD card, you won't have to worry about space for apps.
Since my suggestion is to wait for the LTEvo, I'd go ahead and root the 4G. From there you can use the wireless tether, and/or flash any rom you want. Just be sure to read, read, and then read some more. Understand what you're doing before you do it. With the latest hboot (2.18), you have to use the HTCdev method to unlock the bootloader. You'll still be s-on, and you'll have to flash via fastboot. I'd suggest going ahead with Captain Throwback's method to downgrade and get s-off. From there, your options are limitless.
The fine folks here at xda will be happy to help you out along the way,, just be sure to do your own research. If you get stuck in the process and searching hasn't yielded any answers, then post questions (or send me a pm, I'm happy to help),
Good luck! Hopefully you don't jump the gun and get an Evo 3D, there are much better phones out now and coming out in the near future. The 3D is barely even an upgrade.
Thanks plainjane. The evo 3d is cheap round here. Usually $125-150. The ram is doubled and a 1.2ghz dual core would be better than what I have. I don't see the htc one being much of a upgrade either. I don't care much bout the speed of the camera and taking pics fast. Plus i'm not sure i wanna sign another 2 year contract. The one thing that really turns me off is the non removable battery. Hopefully it will have really good battery life. I still like to have the option to buy extended batteries if i want. What other phones would you suggest?

I agree with the previous comments about waiting on the new HTC phones to upgrade, I wouldn't waste your upgrade on a 3D.
I think you should definitely explore rooting your current Evo to check out some of the awesome custom Roms that are out there, including Sense 3.0 roms. Rooting and partitioning your SD card (maybe upgrade your card) will give you all the storage space you need. It will bring new life to your phone and help pass the time until your contract is up. Me personally, I'm waiting to see how Sprint rolls out the network upgrades/LTE before I get into another 2 year contract. I have a rooted Evo and it does everything I need, I don't need a new phone that is restricted by slow 3G.
Do you know which Hboot you have? Do some rooting research actually, do a lot of research and ask questions. Its not as hard as it seems.
And remember to back up your SD card and Nandroid if do decide to root.
Good luck

Thanks. I def wouldn't waste my upgrade on a 3d. I was just going to sell my evo and buy a 3d on craigslist. Might even be able to break even. I rooted my vizio vtab so I'm kinda familiar. Once you root a evo do you have to flash a rom? When I rooted my tablet it was the same as it was before, just had superuser access. Only did that to free the update service. I've been doing alot of reading. I know I have the newest hboot. From what I've read it will be some fun rooting it. Where can I learn more bout flashing roms and kernels? I've done a good bit of reading but are there any good informative videos?

No, you won't have to flash a rom but, you will probably want to after all the work to unlock it. It took me a week or two to flash after unlocking, and I was on the previous hboot that was a little easier. There should be rooting guides in the development section of the forum and there's also videos on youtube. I used Android Forum a lot at the beginning, they are very user friendly to what may seem like a silly question. Flashing is easy compared to the unlocking aspect, just remember to backup everything, make a Nandroid and wipe everything except sd card prior to flashing.

I recently let a guy borrow my phone while we were fishing a bass tournament and he dropped it in the lake. He gave me his nearly brand new Nitro as a replacement. The problem is that he had rooted his Nitro and didn't back it up before he rooted it. I am a disabled vet and my disability checks aren't as big as my active duty checks were so every nickel I have is more than accounted for. Is there anybody out there that can help with the software and directions? I am fairly computer savvy but I have a long way to go as far as my cell phone knowledge goes. If you can wait just a couple more days, there will be a very easy way to install the latest Android version to your phone that will restore it to factory defaults but with the new Android version released by AT&T. It's supposed to officially release on July 31. Once that day comes, you should be able to follow these steps: http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/ATT_Update/index.jsp
Thanks!!
Man, it will be that simple? No more root or anything? I know I must sound like a complete moron but until I learn alot more about roms, etc, I just need my phone to be stock. He said it had clock mod or something like that. I assume all that will be gone as well? As soon as I get an upgrade availability, I am going to use this LG as a guinea pig as I learn about phone customization. I'm sure I'll end up ruining it but maybe I will learn something first. Thank you very much for the response. I can definitely wait a couple more days.

Well have fun lol. that tool does seem pretty easy. I bet it could be used in case anything gets screwed up to... but you never know..
And clockworkmod is a backup type thing where you can flash zips ( like roms, kernels, etc ), or make backups of your phone, and restore them.
But really though if you dont care about a little faster phone and a little more custumization then normal you probally wont need to flash roms and such
but have fun

Yeah, that update method will remove Clockworkmod and you will be unrooted. There actually wasn't a very efficient way to get back to 100% stock until this new update comes out, so it's pretty good timing on your part. ;p
Well, guys, I got my phone updated...I think. Right in the middle of the update, my doorbell rand and my dog took off for the door and pulled my usb cable out of the phone. I got it plugged back in withing a couple of seconds. It seems to be working okay. I wonder if it messed anything up. I tried to re-do the update but the LG Update tool said the phone was updated and wouldn't update again. I guess we will see.
That's not good...

Well i think it is. I rooted my phone last night and installed the beats drivers from the Play Store. Shortly, it froze and went straight to the Samsung logo. I can still go into both recovery and download mode, but what do I do after that? I've heard about Odin....but how do i exactly put the custom roms into my phone, and which ones? And if any one can point me to a guide or tutorial, ill be extremely relieved. I'm new to the website as well as android, so if anyone could please help me out, thanks
When you rooted did you NANDROID backup ? If not go into recovery and clear cache and then go into advanced and wipe delvik cache. reboot
If that fails go back into recovery and do a factory reset and you should be ok.

I disagree as long as you are willing to learn from the mistake all is good. I had a Samsung Exhibit II and deleted touch wiz launched (I was using go launcher) later I would do a factory reset and well... learned that system files do not get restored when you do a factory reset...oops

I agree, we all were NOOBS at some point. That's the one thing I love about XDA is that with patience and the help of the users any noob can learn how to mod their devices. One piece of advice that I can offer is before you do any type of modding is READ and keep on READING. I have bricked the first device I ever rooted because I did not READ the forums as they are meant to be read.

This is why noobs shouldn't be rooting, hell I'm on my 4th android phone and I'm still holding off on rooting it. And I was constantly popping new ROMS on my Vibrant, never bricked any phone

Yea, not cool dude..remember that WE were all NOOBS at some point in time, therefore we should support and help one another. As for what to do next, follow "Saldebot's" instructions and you should be fine. Sounds like it's only a soft brick. Just keep reading and learning as much as you can bud.

It's not the noobs who shouldn't be rooting... It's the lazy and careless who should stick to stock. If you are careful and diligent, rooting and all the good stuff that comes with it is easy and rewarding.

I whole-heartily agree, I was a freshman noob August 1st this year, by August 4th I was flashing like a pro. Left and right, ROMs, Kernels, Modifying system files, you name it. I wanted to streamline my phone and future proof it somewhat by overclocking. I spent 3 days researching and educating myself, finding the best ROMs, weighing pros and cons, and when it came time to flash, I was on my PC all day making sure whatever I did wouldn't brick me. I carefully analyzed and learned about virtually all methods of flashing by watching tons of videos and reading a bunch of tutorials by several sources. I MD5 checksum'd every zip to be flashed on my phone using an app (to ensure download and transfer was successful). I must have verified that the files I was preparing to flash were indeed for my device make and model about a dozen times before ever touching a button. When I went to flash over my first custom Kernel (even though I had already flashed 2 custom ROMs shortly before that), on that last button my hands were literally shaking, I could not afford a second Galaxy S III. Everything went beautifully, all of my careful planning and hours of invested research payed off. I had done everything right and was rewarded with better battery life (about +50% on heavy load and +500% on idle) and performance (+25%).
My girlfriend also has a Galaxy s3 and she wanted the same performance I was getting. I flashed the exact same software to her device I had to mine, no changes.
Total time invested in flash on my device: 36 hours, at least
Total time invested in flash on her device: 1 hour... if that
The bottom line is yes, if you're not willing to put forth the effort and educate yourself first, you probably shouldn't be doing this. There are guides and tutorials out there for noobs and I would recommend you go there first until you know your way around your device. That way at least you have a little experience on your belt before you start doing anything too advanced (I did this when I was rooting my device for the first time).
As a side note, I know there are a lot of people out there worried about doing anything that could potentially brick their device. That is always a real possibility, I'm not going to lie to you, it happens more often than you think. However in just about every case of bricking you'll ever hear about, it's usually someone flashing something they're not suppose to, like a ROM designed for a different make and model of device, or something experimental that wasn't ready yet. Do all your homework (from multiple corroborating sources) before you undergo a flash and as long as you do everything "by the book" (so to speak) and don't rush through things by being lazy, you should be fine. Some even flash nightlies (yeah they're called that for a reason, updated versions of the ROM they currently have) EVERY NIGHT!!! In the end when you have an android device, you have an open source platform at your fingertips and you should take advantage of that, it would be a waste not to. If not, your next device might as well be an iPhone. They're great for noobs and as long as you're ok drinking whatever punch Apple gives you, they're pretty much impossible to brick since you can't do a whole lot with them. Apple will be happy to take your money and stiff you with closed source for it.

Same here. It took me months of researching on my vibrant before flashing my first rom (bionix 1.6 by teamwhiskey). As I progressed, I did brick left and right but I always managed to bring it back to life with my prior knowledge. Now I'm eagerly waiting for my computer to be done downloading the root files and get started.

Yeah one of the only other IMPORTANT thinks i could add would be always do a factory reset before flashing roms.. some people like to flash "dirty" i wouldnt recommend it cause you will ALWAYS have issues maybe not in a hour but guaranteed you will... but knowledge is power dude.. i two read for about 36 hours before rooting my phone.. i rooted my wifes phone days after a rooted mine back in the day it only took like 15 mins.. another thing let phone sit 10 mins before ya play with it... gotta let the cache settle... the ten min wait is well worth it.. ive been doing it that way since the vibrant bro.. happy flashing and welcome..
I read constantly things change hourly like when that new leaked kernels came out for sgs2 and the emmc was trashed never to come back from a brick again. To anyone that cares if you love your phone read more than just the root and flash stuff learn what makes your phone tick from the factory hardware software and added crap from your carrier it all play's a part in the end result. Its as easy as you make it.

Ive passed down two vibrants (both rooted) to my sons so they can learn to flash roms and everything else that comes from the joys of root.
