over at rootzwiki i just learned that ICS can go into tablet mode, so i did switch and i find it perfectly usable. some apps are even more useful than before like settings, mail, etc.
my only gripe right now is the launcher, it wastes space. i use nova with a 7x7 grid but in portrait mode its too small and in landscape mode i'd like to have more icons in the app-drawer.
does anyone know which launcher will do better? also, is it possible to get back stock launcher2? im on aokp b27 and it had trebuchet (which crashes) and nova.
thanks!
ps. for those who don't know it yet, try it out:
0. make a nandroid. should your launcher crash you are screwed
1. get latest aokp
2. change dpi to 190 in rom control
3. add hide-navbar option in powermenu
4. press powerbutton and hide navbar
5. reboot
trouble-shooting:
market trouble can be resolved by following the steps indicated in the AOKP dpi changer. i still had to manually delete its cache and data plus force close it until it finally shut up and let me download.
phone.apk will likely crash. it can be fixed be exchanging it with the one from AOKP's droid incredible build: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
i used adb, can also be done via root-browser i guess

ADW Launcher Ex works fine...
looks like what i needed, thanks!!! will now download and try
btw, i had problems using the phone app, it crashed. i read pushing the Phone.apk from aokp droid incredible build into /system/app works. and it did. now it runs perfectly, no fc's, no crashes. i uploaded it here in case anyone needs it: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
Yea I was going to say, ADW is my choice for my 10" Tablet.
My Setup:
Hide Dock Bar
Hide Status Bar (top part with App Drawer and redundant menu icon)
Hide Desktop Icon Text
Create a Drawer Icon coupled with whatever desktop icons.
Crank up the desktop Row/Column
This gives you a pretty large work area that is edge to edge. I don't use the dock bar but rather hide it and place my own icons. This removes the restriction of a 5 icon dock.
However I've never done this on my Nexus so I don't know how small the icons would be.
Hiding the statusbar is tricky because it doesn't work via the options checkbox. You have to create a gesture to hide/show statusbar. Go to the desktop and perform the gesture to hide it. Then go back into settings and delete the gesture. Now you'll gain access to the top bar.
With the Status bar gone, you access ADW Settings via the App Drawer like other ICS launchers.
why hiding the navbar? it's only initially since tablet mode brings its own, and i really like it so far. i find it more useful than the one in stock ICS even.
i installed adw and sadly i really don't like it so far. it feels like gingerbread and i hate having to theme ICS when im on ICS. but function-wise i got tiny icons in portrait mode and they seem to behave kinda strange. for now i got nova back, wastes space but i find it optically more appealing.
what i search would be a launcher that can stretch icons. i'd like it to behave just as before, if i use a 4x4 grid it would be cool if it could use the entire screen and not just a tiny fraction. nova comes close using a 7x7 grid but 49 tiny icons look kind of cluttered - not really nice for a homescreen.
btw, look how youtube reacted to tablet mode, never used a tablet or owned one, so my jaw pretty much dropped when i saw it running.
APEX launcher does the job. uses 100% screenspace and icons are big enough.
Also, check out Go launcher Ex. Make the icons larger in the settings menu. I manual set them to 80 and they look great. I also remove the top bar in the launchers setting menu. Set the screen to 6x6 and it looks perfect. Of course running an ICS theme but I don't mind a theme when I am actually on ICS. it is when you are on GB running an ICS theme that makes it feel cheesy!
I wish we could run the density in 160 but it seems like no phone.apk will run in that density. While running in 190 you need to use a modded market but it still seems like the market causes issues with certain apps while trying to download them. 160 would be native so we wouldn't need a modded market.
i still know it from my gf's phone, but must say i never liked it much. i guess im pretty happy now with apex in tablet mode, looks almost stock without the dpi changes, as it should. if i had the 5-button dock back and the notification-curtain (don't like they way they implemented that for tablets, it sucks) yeah it would be perfection but that can't be done unless the rom gets rewritten. im using it now daily, can live with small kinks and the new gapps/settings more than make up for it - would never ever want to revert to old mail/youtube/contacts/callendar, etc.
btw, are there rom's out there making dedicated use of it? i guess could care less about the newest tweak that gives me 5 minutes more battery power. but something that transforms the entire UI/IX into something more useful...

That launder does not work with the densities that we can use. It does work at 160 in portrait but not landscape.
Wish someone implemented this as a stable and full functioning ROM..
Worked well with AOKP until it went into airplane mode and never got out. I then rebooted and my cellular data was gone all together. Guess it really thought it was a tablet.

Yeah, data seems to be a little weird. I downloaded a file then it just stopped and wouldn't connect again and I couldn't make a call either. It was still showing full bars and 4G though. A reboot fixes it. I was running Franco's kernel so thought maybe it had something to do with that so I am back on stock kernel and going to see how it behaves. I so don't want to give this up. It it pure awesomenes!

thats terrible, i better make a nandroid before i try it. a custom rom would be great though, im getting really tired fixing this up.
the thing is, i really dislike the new tablet notification center, and the launcher. i wish it would behave just like before, if it could perhaps be tricked into ignoring the fake dpi. and i reaalllyy miss the notification curtain and the dock-bar. i tried hours to find some replacement for the old dock, the only thing that came close was desktop visualizr from the market, it creates resizable launcherbuttons with or without label and let's you set icons/images.
i love the new apps and settings, but the homescreen looks kinda long and dorky.

guys, i modded apexlauncher with apktool. made some changes in dalvik code to trick it into getting back the old dpi and brought back the dock through changes in the res files. icons are back to normal size aswell. it craps its pants though when it goes to landscape and the appdrawer shows only half of the screen, definitively needs more work. if someone could help with this i'd really appreciate it.

As we all know that the 4.2.2 update made our phone as fast as the 4.1.2. But it has a bug, at least for Maguro (not happening on my N7). Do you ever get a laggy scrolling on homesceen, when entering app drawer and scrolling in recent apps? I believe everyone has it. But only few people notice it. I have tried all 4.2.2 ROMs. AOSPA, AOKP, PAC, etc and all of them has this bug (I have done a clean flashing). And I have tried all launchers, Nova, Apex, Holo, Action Launcher, Stock, but the lag is still back!
The (systemUI) lag has to do with rendering (static) wallpapers. This can be solved by:
1. Setting a live wallpaper
2. Temporarily, by pressing the app switcher button, rotating the screen and pressing the back button
3. Disabling system autorotate
4. Making the launcher (instead of systemUI) handle the rendering of wallpapers. In Nova launcher, use the 'force scrolling' option, in Trebuchet (CM) use the 'wallpaper quick render' option
5.. Using an app to set static wallpapers as if it were a live wallpaper
Also, emptying cache for all user and system apps using Titanium Backup seems to affect the issue positively. Please note that this might result in some settings being set to stock (like the keyboard, snooze duration and some other minor things).
Well, this is only for temporarily solution for those of you that getting sick of this bug. Waiting for the fix from Google.
Thanks to Butter Smooth for summarizing

I've noticed the choppy transitions in 4.2.2. too and I'm glad I'm not the only one
Another finding is that changing the wallpaper makes the transitions smooth again. But the choppiness returns after a while. I'll try your tip tomorrow and report...

To me 4.2.2 seems the most stable version so far, it's very much consistent, and scrolling in the recent apps menu gets laggy after I scroll a certain amount, and ofc when removing the process it lags, but this was present in 4.2.1 as well, i would have to say that as far as performance say, it's much more consistent than previous versions,
Static wallpaper or live, i see no difference

There's actually a lot of truth to the live wallpaper trick. Back on the Photon forums, we would use this technique to smoothen out the UI on our ICS and JB releases since we did not have a proper kernel and drivers, thus terrible onscreen performance. But this fix has existed since ICS! And it works!
Regarding the live wallpaper being smooth. It might have something to do with scrolling wallpapers too. How is everyone's feelings on a static, non scrollable wallpaper? Or is that what we are talking about?
I've had the choppyness too.
I am now using plasma beam and will report back. I also am going to try it on my nexus 10.
I'm telling you guys, try out the combo I posted in post 2. It really removes lag.

i use it like that(single homescreen no scroll)and i noticed the same lagging issue after a while
but i think it has to do with how you set the wallpaper, when i used zedge or image2wallpaper to set them the issue stated on the OP appeared
but if i use the stock gallery to set them and the problem is mostly gone
something else ive noticed is that the status bar lag only happens when on the launcher screen, open any app and pull the SB and its smooth, go back to the homescreen and pull it,its choppy
EDIT
still happens even after using the stock gallery

I've noticed the same problem with 4.2.2 ever since it came out. I usually use Phase Beam so I never noticed it. Only when I switched to a static wallpaper (one of the stock ones) for a day did I notice that the transitions into and out of app drawer and scrolling through home screens gets choppy. I never did find a way to reproduce it reliably, but I do know that if you use it long enough it will start to happen.
Immediately fixes itself by setting to any Live Wallpaper as OP had suggested.
Problem only started to occur with 4.2.2. Never had it happen in 4.2.1 or 4.1.x.

Then try to swipe on lockscreen between widgets if you have some. You will notice that the lag is still there, but atleast its a better deal to have it on lockscreen then on homescreen.

I don't know man. I'm either lucky or just not as picky but I don't even notice lag there. I have a few screens of widgets on my lock screen too.
Set a static wallpaper, go back to home screen or lock your device. Then, swipe down the notification bar and notice how choppy it appears.
Now, go inside an application, like Calculator - swipe down the notification bar and notice how smooth it is.

edited op. i had lag on 4.2.2 with the stock launcher but once i installed nova and changed all the animation speeds everything changed to bullet speed.
Thanks for the video.
No offense but I don't think we're talking about the same sort of "lag". The one we're talking about is a system bug that came with 4.2.2. causes frame rates slowdown when scrolling between homescreens, lockscreens and in recents. When it appears you can even notice it while switching between the tabs in notification pulldown (gets really choppy). Problem appears randomly, sometimes after couple of hours, sometimes after a day or two. It cannot be eliminated by simple launcher change and turning animations off.
Turning animations off makes scrolling look faster indeed but it kills fluidity on the other hand which I really really don't like.

Rebooting, changing wallpaper, rotating screen (under recents) are known workarounds to temporarily get rid of this lag. Probability to reproduce the issue is lower when you did one/ some of them.
Workarounds aren't a fix for the sluggishness - it's still a workaround. And nothing is a workaround for worse RAM management compared to 4.1.2.
Hmm try opening a couple of tabs in browser (5+) and open the tab switcher and scroll. If you see lag, well done. If you don't, the flash 4.1 to see real butter. I can go on and on but the browser is the most apparent lag. Battery life too. Do not suggest me to flash custom kernels, been there done that. 4.2 is just a laggy mess all over. I've wiped, flash factory images, try out many roms even the rom OP is using. But none are as fast as good old 4.1

Hello everyone,
I have my HTC One M8 (standard european silver version from shop) for one month and I am facing mini lags in animation when I exit app drawer to main screen with widgets. It is not happening everytime, maybe in one of five attempts. I is not very serious and otherwise device works very well, but I am dissapointed a bit, because I thought HTC Sense is fastest android customized UI. I was experiencing it with stock 4.4.3 and also after update to 4.4.4 few weeks ago. I have also done reset to factory settings after update to 4.4.4, but it didnt help. I noticed that lag is more frequent, when the main screen is filled with icons (I have here big HTC weather widget, HTC music widget, and 8 icons. Then on second main screen I have calendar widget and on last screen I have blinkfeed. And there are only like 5 apps installed, autosync is off, nothing is running on background, I have even disabled some running HTC apps (Facebook, Fitbit, Kids Mode, Twitter, Dot view...), but still the same. I dont want to root it and I would like to avoid alternative launchers, because I like HTC blinkfeed and widgets.
Is anybody else having this problem? What should I do to fix it? I have also tried to force GPU rendering in Developer options, but it didnt help.
Thanks
I can return to home from menu over and over with no noticeable lag. This is with HTC weather clock widget, 8 app icons, and 2 other widgets. Stock debloated 4.4.4 ROM.
Does it do this after a factory reset, with no 3rd party apps (or at at least minimal) installed?
Yes, as I mentioned, I have done factory reset as well and issue is there immediately after I fill main screen with HTC widgets and icons (with blank home screen issue is hardly noticable and very rare though), without any 3rd applications installed. And lag is very hardly to track, because some days it is not noticable at all and some other days it it more agressive.

Take a look at the services that's running in the background or maybe a rogue app is causing this issues. I once faced a similar issue on my HTC Desire and I factory reset the device and reduced the apps installed and everything was back to normal

Are you using "power saver"? It limits power to your CPU.
It might be the culprit. Taking a guess here.
I've been having the same issues after the 4.4.4 update. Did a hard reset, and alas, no improvements. The only thing that seems to improve overall performance and battery life, as well as eliminate the glitches is switching to ART (from developer options). The only other option for me, practically, is to unlock bootloader or s-off, then flash 4.4.2 which was simply amazing.
Anyway, try switching to ART, you WILL notice great improvement
First of all, thank you guys for tips.
I dont think this is caused by some background process, because as I mentioned, issue is there immediately after actory reset, when I fill main screen with HTC widgets. And also benchmark performance is good (more than 43000 points in new Antutu) and battery life as well, so there is not process eating CPU power.
And I am not using power saving mode.
I been thinking about switching to ART before, but I have done some research and some users are reporting issues with some applications after switching to ART.. Maybe I will just have to wait 2 months for official Android 5.0 update, which will be running on ART and I hope it will fix this minor but annoying issue.
Perhaps your expectations are slightly high? Any device has its odd laggy times.
Clear the cache. Watch your free space. Greenify games and any social apps that you can live without notifications. We don't know your setup or what is running... You may have "everything on", 5 social apps running and who knows what else.
Hard to troubleshoot this honestly. If you have an inefficient setup and CPU hungry apps running in the background, of course you'll see stutters. ?

You probably have a bunch of apps running in the background. I've set "long press back button" to kill apps and keep them from running in the background.
Another way to kill running apps is to go to the "recent apps" on navbar (or pie controls if you are like me) and tap the squiggly line in a box at the top/task manager.
Kill the apps that are running that you aren't using (except for hangouts if you use it for sms, sms, email, anything you want running for notifications pretty much) and see if that helps.
If you don't want to use task manager, you could just reboot your phone for the same results.
Task manager is quicker though.
OP, you are right that Sense has lag especially returning to home screen. I always had it and it was pretty annoying coming from the Nexus 5. Changing launchers to Google Now launcher helps the home screen lag issue. It's just a Blinkfeed launcher issue that you are experiencing.
HTC One M8
Guys I am telling you again and again, that this issue is present immediately after factory reset (when I just set HTC widgets and icons on main screen).
This is the list of my current running apps (see attachment, I have disabled almost everything)
I now think that this issue is on every HTC ONE M8 (as Elisha confirmed), but I am just too sensitive to lags. Even cheap ZTE of my sister with Nova launcher has smoother transition to main menu in most cases.
Let see how HTC will handle Android 5 update, maybe it will be better.
Mine is smooth as silk. Better than my N5 even.
Debloated, some greenifying, location off, Nova Launcher... Most sense apps frozen. Incredible battery life and lag free.
It's not all M8's. ?

Yes I read... I always read. Thanks for the tip tho. ?
I have the AT&T version and it had stutters going from the app drawer to the home screen every time from the moment I first turned it on. I RUU'd to Developer version, OTA'd to 4.4.4 and there are no stutters now. Totally smooth fade. Nearly every transition is completely smooth.
I'm not sure if it's the developer RUU or 4.4.4, but it's very smooth with Blinkfeed launcher.
There's an app in the Galaxy app store called good lock. The notification shade gets changed to more of a stock Android look and the lock screen has more customization options. After you download it installs itself like an update. Has anyone else tried this?

Just updated it, one step closer to looking like AOSP. I wonder if this is the new version of Touchwiz or just an alternative.
It's not very good looking. Needs to have options to change the colors.
Good thing its optional.
You can change the colors. In the routines settings.

Where do I find the routines settings?
Edit: I found it
Yeah I like it a lot, found it much faster and smoother then stock hope this is a tease of things to come. Only thing I found was motion wallpaper does not work. I have found most people dislike the recent apps but I find it faster and easier to use.

It was just released. I figure it can only improve, especially after they sift through all the initial feedback.
I uninstalled for now until they sort out the bugs. Was getting battery drain from it accessing my location so much.
Lockscreen effects are back!!!!
had to uninstall it because the notification suddenly became blurry and I couldn't see it anymore (though clicking on it would still complete the wanted action)
Running it and it is pretty good, you set up various "Routines" to change you WiFi, BT, color and other settings depending on location or time.
Works good but broken when used with the sammy LED case
Tried it yesterday. Intriguing. But buggy. Seems like Android system ui tuner could be activated, but wouldn't. Changed the behavior of my home button. Not sure if quick setting tiles could be changed. Status bar and notification tiles look a lot like stock Android N, but lock screen behaves like Jellybean. Looking forward to trying it again after more bug fixes.
Also, wifi calling notification appears twice. Lock screen widgets are not so useful if you like to use the fingerprint scanner. Same goes for the lock screen shortcuts. Fun to play with, though.
This breaks encrypted SD cards
How do I uninstall it¿ I got battery drain

I had bad battery drain with this. Also, IMO, the color options are way too girly.

Oh this is nice....I'm.loving it!!!!!!!
This is great! For some reason after connecting it to my car the constant location settings pop up went away, even with location off! Still no way of organizing the quick toggles, but a definite improvement over stock. I've not seen any increase in battery drain either, with AOD on I lost 8% over 12 hrs last night.
