Hello,
I was wondering about flashing kernels and Roms separately. I want to flash the SGS2 Streamline kernel and the |ROM|Paradox II|L.O.V.E|. I know that the Rom already has the Darkside kernel in it, which is why I am wondering how this process would work and if I flash the kernel before the Rom or vice versa?
Thank you.

Flash the rom first. Let it settle for a while. Then go back into recovery and wipe cache, dalvik then flash kernel. After it installs fix permissions in recovery, then reboot. make sure you give it about 10-15 minutes after first boot to settle in.

At what point do I install a new Kernel?
I'm about to flash a new ROM and it is recommended to use a particular Kernel. At which point do I do this? Just before the first boot? After the first boot?
Thanks!
Kernel comes with the ROM you are flashing. So my suggestion is to try the one that came along with the ROM. If for some reason you are not satisfied with it may it be high battery drain, undervolting, overclocking, or missing governor options, that's when you look for another kernel.
There are 2 types of kernel for Desire, Sense based or AOSP based. You can't use one with the ROM based with the other.
You install new kernels the same way you flash a ROM. Kernel comes in a flashable zip. ONLY wipe dalvik and cache before flashing a new kernel. No need to wipe system at this point. Yeah flash it after the first boot, although flashing it right after the rom wouldn't hurt I believe.
Just flash it right after you flashed the ROM.

Is there anywhere I can download the CM9 kernel or backup the current one? I want to try out different kernels. I like the CM9 kernel, but miss the tweaks like usb fast charge. I would prefer not to have to backup the whole rom as the method in case I have to restore it a week later rather then just re-flash back the kernel. Thanks !

All you have to do is reflash the ROM to get back to the stock kernel, doesn't hurt since it's a no wipe flash.
You could also take the boot.img from the CM9 zip and flash that via fastboot.
Sweet. Thanks!

i been flashing androids for a while and i am just helping out a friend to install a custom rom on her epic touch.
i did a quick research, but something is a little confusing to me?
on a rom installation it states to "use agats tw safe recovery to flash it"
yet, i cant really find a thread about recovery without kernels?
from what i understand is that kernel usually has nothing to do with recoveries. and basiclly each rom you flash will have a kernel in it
the epic is already on custom ics rom and has team rouge's recovery, i should assume that its safe to wipe/and install any ics roms correct?
thanks for any helps in advance
The recoveries on this phone have always been bundled with the kernel. Always has been always will be. Was confusing for me too when I first got it.

For this device as EpicFlair mentioned the Kernel is bundled with the recovery. Use Agat's latest [ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 ] or rujelus22 [ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826190 ] or Chris41G kernels for TW ROMs with 'safe' recovery and you'll be fine.
If you are going to flash a CM, AOSP or JB ROM be sure to read the OPs instructions! Many require a different/special kernel and or method. Or you could make your friend a nice shiny paperweight.
Once you are sure you are using a safe recover to wipe/format all/factory reset, then YES most all ROMs come with a custom recovery - usually one of the above mentioned.
Have fun.
I have never flashed any kernels, just custom roms. From what I have read it goes down the same way, just flash the zip from SD in recovery and wipe cache. Correct?
Also, if I want to go back to stock kernel can I flash back to a JOP40C ( this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992483 ) even though my build is JOP40D ?

just flash it in your recovery(if its a flashable zip). dont wipe a single thing, dalvik and cache have nothing to do with kernels. worst case scenario, it doesnt boot. then just reflash your rom in your recovery to fix it.

franco is a good kernel. but most his kernels are in a img form, need fastboot for that. if its a zip, then flash it in your recovery, dont wipe a thing.

Yes I am sure this is a flashable zip. I found the img files and the zip files on the franco thread.
What about going back to stock? I just want to know if something goes wrong. Does flashing my rom get me the stock kernel back?

It gets you whatever kernel was originally in the ROM.

Even the .IMG files are easy enough to handle, OK so perhaps it might cost you a little money but within the Franco app (I don't know about others as not tried them) but you can simply just choose to restore a .IMG kernel file be it stock (which I have a copy of if you wanted it?) So you can swap and change as you wanted and the plus side of flashing this way is that you avoid the long reboot time dues to catch building again due to ram disk changes. I really think this is the best way of flashing kernels and certainly the easiest way if you wanted to carry on back to the OTA update route from Google.
For instance, I'm running stock takju rom 4.2.1 rom with Franco kernel and I have the stock boot loader and baseband and recovery and to install an OTA I just need to delete just one file and restore back to stock kernel that OTA update will install without troubles

I came from a Droid X2 that had a locked bootloader. All the ROM's for it didn't change the kernel and the ROM had to be on a certain kernel to function properly.
My question is do the ROM's on Galaxy nexus come with kernel when you flash them or do you need to be on a certain kernel first or flash a kernel With the ROM while still in recovery.
The ROM I'm looking at doesn't say anything about what kernel to be on so I assume it comes with one.
Thanks,
Troy

No need to flash a custom kernel unless you want to, or unless the directions for that specific ROM instruct you to. Personally I found that my device performs better if I stay with the packaged kernel and not flash a different kernel after flashing a ROM. But others have had different results with different kernels. I would recommend sticking with the kernel packaged with your ROM to start with, that way you would know how it should perform. Then if you flash a new kernel in the future, if you start having an issue you would know it could be due to the custom kernel and not the ROM.

Some come with a kernel some do not....and there's no need to wipe cache or dalvik when flashing a kernel (as per Mr imoyseon himself)....flashing a kernel could cause a boot loop when its not compatible so just take your battery out and reflash a different one....just try some out and make sure you read allllllll of the OP whenever you flash anything
