Quite a lot PDAs supporting USB-host, but for only a few an adapters or appropriate cables from the manufactures are available.
As these devices support USB-Slave as well I would like to know if there's a way to convert the USB male connector (used as slave e.g. for sync with the PC) to a USB-host female in order to connect accessories (keyboard, mass-storage devices...).
According to wikipedia the configuration of the pins shouldn't differ too much for slave and host mode.

But it's a male-to-male converter and furthermore a converter from "big usb" to micro (mini?) usb. As there're already standard converters for the different sizes of USB I would like to start with the biggest size and to buy the appropriate converter as needed.
Does anyone has a circuit diagram or any other idea for such a generic converter?

I had a Nokia 770 a couple of years ago. It came as USB device only with mini USB connector, but online I found how to upgrade the software to USB host, and use a cable adapter. The plans I found online involved a 9V battery and 5V voltage regulator inside a metal case (they used a penguin mints case). I built one of those, even using the penguin mints case, and it worked fine.
I have never seen any indication that my HTC phone would work the same, but I am guessing that it might, if the USB host drivers are available.
Google couldn't locate the penguin mints-based converter I originally found, but this seems to be a similar circuit diagram.

thanks for the links. but i'm a little bit afraid of connecting something to my pda which has an own power supply, the risk of a burn-out is given. i've got a nautiz x5 with 4400mA battery which should have enough energy to supply usb-power to connected devices.
I think I'm going to contact the manufacture of my device, maybe this works for me, but a generic adapter would be of use for anyone.
the chips used for usb should be of the shelf as i don't think each manufacture develops an own logic for usb... but this doesn't imply that the cabeling is standard too.
what the heck makes manufactures providing features in their products which the users can't take advantage of?

because it's so simple if ur phone has a mini usb plug (the one u plug the power adapter into). i found a cable that plug into that and plugs a normal usb cable in on the other side and blam been typing on my phone using a desktop keyboard. it depends how much power your device requires however. i wish there was some software to feed a video line out so i could watch videos on pair of vizors that wud be rad. all i can find is a mini-sd card converter now whats the point of that. guess i need an itouch

primary i want to connect usb mass storage devices to my pocket pc. gamecontroller or keyboard would be a good thing too.
my devices doesn't have a standard usb plug, the only thing i got is a adapter from the properitary plug of my device to standard usb male connector, but this is meant for usb-slave use only.
the underlying qeustion is, if there's a way to convert usb-slave to usb-host using the same pins. if it needs an additonaly pin then i don't see a way to convert it as i don't know anything about the pins cableing of my properitary plug.
a week ago i found an adapter which was able to convert the male usb to another male usb... but it didn't work.
the problem is compareable to datatransfer between two pcs via usb - it's possible, but only using properiatry hardware and drivers...
so i think there's no way to solve this problem in a generic way.
out of interest, do you already have windows CE drivers for the device to act as a host and mass storage? I wouldnt mind them if you can point me somewhere..

I bought these on ebay. The HDMI is short but worked but when I connect both cables to lapdock, the USB is not being recognized so the keyboard/mouse is not working. I want this just to act as an extension so I can use full lapdock abilities with cables. Any idea what's going on (cable charges on plug but does not charge on lapdock)? Maybe someone has better usb cables.

i don't think it will work either way, tried a few things like this with no avail.
why wouldn't they? Cheap build quality that doesn't include the data wires? Hell I'll be willing to splice two cables together to get our desired effect, the only problem is that cords with a female micro usb are incredibly hard to come by

the only reason that is my suspicion is because there are many "charging" products out there that don't really need data. Why there would be a need for such a small charging extension cable is beyond me, but it's the only solution I can think of, but I have no way of confirming or denying it either. The ebay descriptions seem to imply that the data wires are there, but we all know how reliable ebay can be...
Another idea I had was that it might be sensing the resistance in the cable, since, if I remember correctly, that was how some think/though the car dock puts the atrix into car mode without a magnet as is/was commonly used. Again these are just ideas.
Or the cable is just so poorly made that it's defective...I honestly have no clue

The HDMI certainly looks like it may work but the reason I didn't buy that product from ebay a few weeks ago was because it was $50. Now miraculously, it's only $6. Maybe I'll get that if the USB cable I just bought that was suggested works a few posts back.

This micro usb extension cord explicitly states that all 5 wires are connected (compatible with droid bionic for the purpose of docking with a case on the phone):

The HDMI cable seems to work. On the lapdock, with just the HDMI cable hooked up, it functions like it was it's an entertainment center.
The USB cord will need to be modified a little bit. I can't get it to seat right on the USB jack of the dock. I'll need to shave it down a bit as it doesn't sit down snugly.

I ordered the USB cable and experience this same problem, though I am waiting for my hdmi parts to come in (by April 6th I should have all my parts...). The cable itself works flawlessly as a micro usb extension cable when connecting it to the computer.
again as mentioned in the other thread, you want to be careful with the 5v coming out that micro hdmi port. for connecting back to your phone would be no issue, as the phone charges using this voltage, but hooking the lapdocks micro usb up to a host device probably wont appreciate the 5v coming back up the cable, where normally the usb device would be pulling power from said host, not providing it.
one suggestion is to just clip the red wire inside your micro usb cable/adapter.
btw the adapters i use do fit snugly side by side, without modification.
I've been following this thread for a little while now, and I wanted to share something I found.
I was looking at the Motorola Travel Webtop adapter. And I was curious to see whether it could be tweaked to suite our needs. I naively thought/hoped that I could flip the connectors in the device to make a small adapter to connect the Atrix to newer Lapdocks. Unfortunately as you can see in the pictures below (sorry not enough posts to link to the pictures) the two connectors are connected via a PCB not wires or a ribbon cable. Although I still have high hopes that I can de-solder the HDMI and USB connectors, and use a small length of flat ribbon cable to connect them and then re-positions the connectors in the case, to build a micro adapter to use the Atrix on the newer Lapdocks. Should this fail this will at least prevent others from making the same mistake, and solve the mystery of what's really inside the Webtop Travel adapter.
Do any one know if this Micro HDMI Cable would work for Lapdock.

Has anyone found a MHL cable that also includes a USB OTG port? Samsung reportedly changed from a 5-pin configuration to an 11-pin configuration to allow MHL with USB Host mode simultaneously. Perhaps for a future Desktop Mode?

Just wanted to update, I believe I found the type of connector that I was looking for, but it is missing HDMI and it is sold out. This essentially could give you PC type connectivity on the S3.

I think we still have a bit of a wait. What you found is essentially a USB OTG hub with some card readers built in. I seriously doubt this will pass through the pins for HDMI to work out of the usb port. We'll see something when this phone finally launches everywhere. It's not even out in the US officially yet

Samsung sells 11 pin MHL adapters and USB female to Micro USB male adapters on their accessories page, but I'm not sure if you could piggy back the USB input into the charging port of the MHL cable. I don't see any all in one cables on their site, and the desktop dock is just micro usb/audio. I tried.. =(

Now, I do have a Galaxy Nexus, but the USB OTG works great with keyboards/usb/mice/hubs; however, I cannot get it to simultaneously work with my MHL adapter. I understand the GS3 has a different pin layout though for MHL - my phone works with my MHL adapter correctly, but I didn't think it would have any change on the USB OTG. I'll most likely be breaking these apart and start tinkering. My goal is to show people how much of a full desktop-like experience I can provide from my phone, since so many people somehow think a GNex or GS3 are inferior to tablets, just because they're smaller... lol
Good luck finding information out on some kind of MHL/USB OTG setup. I'm just trying to provide any information I can from how my situation works with MHL/OTG, since I'm currently on the quest to achieve this myself.

I'm not really sure why people think they NEED MHL and USB OTG simultaneously to get a "desktop-like experience". You can already accomplish this with just a plain MHL cable and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse as was demonstrated in the Connectivity Demo video on youtube.
Edit: Actually I just remembered about portable hard drives. If you want to hook up a mouse, keyboard AND hard drive I wonder if you can plug all three into a powered USB hub connected to a bluetooth dongle. Hmm...

I believe this is already capable. Everything I say here is purely speculative, but what I see is that Samsung moved to a 11-pin connector for MHL and the standard 5-pin is no longer functioning. To call it MHL, they probably have to use the same standards for data encoding... but they simply "moved" the pins.
I put "moved" in quotes because of the way in which a standard 4 pin USB cable works (or 5 pin for our case)... you have a +5V, Ground, Data + and Data - (one data to phone, one data from phone, carrying ALL data). Since our phones still sync via 5-pin cables, this means the 5 pins are still "hot" for data like all other phones. I am presuming, that for the 11-pin connector, Samsung simply added a few more data+ and data- connectors (much like having two or three USB ports on a normal computer) but consolidated the ground/5V reference. I could be wrong, but it would make sense.
Lets call the stock 5 pin data connectors (2 wires) USB1. This is where MHL is conventionally sent through and all sycing can be completed through, 5 pin cable or 11 pin cable. If samsung added two additional USB ports to the single connector, lets say MHL is now over USB2 (wires inaccessible to 5 pin connectors). This frees up bandwidth and COM ports on USB1 and USB3 to use for accessories like a USB hard drive and keyboard/mouse. On a 5 pin connector, however, only USB1 is accessible. The Samsung 11pin to 5pin MHL adapter simply moves the data+/- from USB2 to USB1 (standard 5 pin location), so with the adapter you are syncing/exporting video over USB2 on the phone with a standard 5pin cable.
My thinking is such: If you plug in the OEM 11pin MHL adapter, it will also have access to the standard 5pin USB1 connection. Since USB2 is used for MHL, you can then plug any OTG device into the micro USB connector on the MHL adapter to make use of it. The only problem here is power (or lack thereof). By plugging in a USB hub with a discrete power source, plugging this into the MHL adapter, and plugging in the USB device of choice into the HUB, you *SHOULD* be able to get simultaneous data and HDMI. This assumes they put the standard 5 pins to the connector on the side of the MHL adapter and only wired the HDMI to the USB2 area.
Alternatively, you *SHOULD* be able to plug the micro USB cable from the MHL adapter into a computer, and simultaneously be able to sync files while outputting HDMI video. It sort of just comes down to being able to provide power to the MHL adapter on the +5V pin while using the data pins to access the phone. As soon as I have my MHL I'll figure it out, but that could be a bit. If anybody has access to a pinout from a Samsung 11 pin micro USB that would be helpful too.
Again, just dreaming here. I don't know anything about this, but if I was the engineer at Samsung I would choose this over analog outputs like Apple used for their giant connector.

for me at least i already have several keyboards and mice ... none are bluetooth.
I'm looking for the cheapest option available.
I'm just hoping someone releases a cable with 4 plugs:
Male MHL - To Phone Obviously
Female MicroUSB: To plug in charger
Female HDMI - To Display
Female USB - To USB Device
That's all I want... should cost less than $2 to make, just sell it for $20 and I'd be happy.

hi v8bait, are you able to get data thru the micro usb port at the side of the 11-pin mhl adapter? i was thinking of using the motorola lapdock with my s3 thru the mhl adaptor (other then a micro hdmi male connector, the lapdock also has a micro usb male connector that apparently send out power as well as push keyboard/trackpad data upstream) - if it works, we can have an inexpensive "clambook"

I am also very interested in this exact thing. Using USB devices (multiple ones, e.g. plugging a powered USB hub into S III and then plugging them in) but also putting out S III video to HDMI.
However the other workaround is using AllShare Cast. In fact that is the route I'll likely go, because of the other unique advantages of AllShare Cast (i.e. using it for presentations to screens, etc.)
So: has anyone plugged a powered USB hub into S III and used multiple devices? Such as a keyboard and mouse?
I also want to use this S III more as a computer. the other perfect thing I wish I could buy would be a keyboard case, like the one available for iphone, so I can prop the S III up on a kickstand and use a real mini-QWERTY physical keyboard.

We're in the same boat; i want to use the s3 like a mini computer too. I think it'd be great for business travel, when i dont really need a laptop during the day but want something when i'm back in hotel room. I'd much rather use hotel TV instead of a laptop because that's what i am used to at home... pc hooked to TV.
I've been planning to use the allshare cast dongle too, but they dont seem to be available yet. I was thinking HDMI out with the allshare.. charging with the wireless charging kit and then keyboard and mouse with USB OTG. My logitech unifying receiver for keyboard/mouse works perfectly i just need the wireless charging and allshare dongle to be released.
For what it's worth I tried a powered USB hub and could not get it to work with the s3.

Wait so your saying you tried a (a) powered USB hub with a OTG cable connected to the phone or you tried a (b) powered USB hub connected with a OTG cable to the MHL adapter and then to the phone?
If it was (a) then there are some vids out there of ppl using powered USB hubs.

I'm puzzled that there aren't any more postings about this kind of stuff. I was expecting the GS3 to be easy to use as a "PC" replacement but it seems no one besides us few wanted to do that ? A simple cable should have done it but I'd even be willing to shell out 40-50$ for a decent dock that would do just that

Maybe I'm not reading these posts correctly but I am using an usb keyboard and a usb mouse on my S3 with no problems using these two accessories:

I have the official MHL adapter and there is no female USB port on it for OTG

You are not reading it right.
they want to use the MHL adapter, too.
As far as i can tell, the MHL adapter needs to be in the phone, not a hub. it is all dictated (the output being OTG, or MHL) by the impedance of what is plugged in. It is an either or situation.
Perhaps with a firmware update they MIGHT be able to run both signals and split it.. but i doubt it.

So I'm having a hell of a time getting my Western Digital 2TB external drive to connect to my Nexus 7 2013. I have both Stickmount and Nexus Media Importer installed, and I'm rooted with Cyanogenmod, and I have a working OTG cable.
I know that the Nexus 7 doesn't have enough power to support most external hard drives that use a USB for power. So I bought a 12000mAh external battery with a 5V 2.1A output USB port, and a 4-port (unpowered) USB hub from Radioshack.
Along with those, I had to hunt down a male-to-male standard USB cable in order to connect the female port on the hub to the female port of the OTG cable (using the standard USB-to-micro doesn't work, because for some reason the OTG cable is specifically required to mount USB devices on Android, as you guys probably know).
After finally getting the male-to-male cord today, I tried hooking it up and still no luck. NMI detects the OTG cable but cannot detect the external drive. It works just fine with a flash drive.
Now after looking at the reviews of the USB hub on the site that I linked to, I'm thinking it may be the problem. If you look in the comments you have multiple people stating that this specific hub doesn't play well with many external drives. I haven't had any troubles with it through my PC, but you never know. I've also tried switching between the USB 3.0 cable that came with the drive to a standard USB-to-micro charge/data cable (with no luck), because I've read that NMI doesn't support USB 3.0
Does anyone have any advice or experience with this kind of thing? I'm thinking I may need to find a Y adapter that has one female and two male plugs so I'm not having to go through a potentially-crappy USB hub. But I'm not sure if that'll actually fix the problem or not. From searching around on the web a bit, it seems that connecting this specific drive with the Nexus 7 shouldn't be all that difficult, there's plenty of simple guides out there to demonstrate.
Just to recap, here's my connection process:
- Connect USB hub to external batter (2.1A port), make sure battery is ON
- Connect USB from External Drive to an open port on the hub
- Connect male-to-male USB cable to another port on the hub
- Connect M2M cable to the OTG cable
- Connect OTG cable to Nexus 7 (while on, with 90%+ battery)
- Nothing happens

I have a WD 1TB USB3 external drive. The only way I got it to work was by installing Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ (Available on the Play store), connecting the drive through a normal OTG cable, and rebooting the Nexus WITH the cable connected. Yes, I have to reboot every time with the OTG cable plugged in. I can plug/unplug devices as much as I want, but once the OTG is unplugged, I have to do another reboot; it's annoying, but it is better than nothing. Give this a shot.
Also, what ROM/Kernel are you running?
is the drive formatted as NTFS or exFAT? maybe try the ElementalX kernel as it supports both formats for USB OTG and see if that helps?

edit- just remembered that i came across extra files on the Stickmount XDA page a while back that lets Stickmount support NTFS and exFAT drives, if flashing a custom kernel isn't your thing then you could try that..

I finally got it to work, and now I just feel foolish.
I just needed to switch two cords. I had the male end of the USB hub plugged into the battery, and then the external drive and male-to-male USB plugged into the hub. The male-to-male cord then went to the OTG and the tablet. This apparently didn't let the data/power through correctly.
I went down to the local computer shop and the guy showed me that I was doing it wrong. Instead of using the hub's male end to hook up to the battery, I needed to use the m2m cord for that. The male end of the hub now connects to the OTG, and it works like a charm. I have to make sure to power up the drive and give it a second before connecting it, but Stickmount detects it right away and I have all my content.
I was pretty sure I'd tried every configuration and that I'd need a Y cable for sure, but I'm glad that's not the case even though I feel like an idiot now, haha.
Hi, not managed to find any info regarding whether the OPO can act as a USB host using the micro-USB connector and an adapter (micro-USB male to full size USB female) cable.
I've an i9300 adapter cable - generic brand, not Samsung - which works perfectly on my S3, can connect USB flash drives and it also powers 2.5" disks without any problem.
Don't want to risk plugging the adapter cable into the OPO unless I'm sure its wired correctly, and havent found any OPO adapter cables for sale anywhere...... so wondered if anyone knows the pin assignments of the connector, or has tried an external disk adapter cable?
Give it a try and see what happens, worst thing that can happen is that it won't work, I have made one a few years back and then replaced it with a Nokia OTG cable and works fine (I've used this cables on all the phones on the signature). I don't see why it will be wired differently from any other, companies work with "standards" so things like this are compatible across all phones, unless its Apple.
Thanks for the reply... you've solved my problem, I hadn't included "OTG" in my search terms. Oneplus do have a cable listed, and other sellers list a single cable claiming compatibility with just about all phones - including i9300 and Oneplus.
Plugged it in and it works fine with a FAT-32 card Doubt whether ext / reiserfs support is there, but may have been compiled in to a custom kernel.....
Doesn't manage too well where disks have more than one partition - if the first is reiserfs and the second FAT32 it fails to mount. Assume first partition must be FAT
