Htc should wake up! - Windows Phone 7 General

I keep on coming accross posts and comments on prolonging battery life for poor battery HTC phones like the HD7 and I aks my self, So with all these suffering, tormenting, users trying out their own techniques and methods to improve their HD7's battery life, can't HTC sense our pain and release some form of battery life update for the HTC HD7 and other poor battery related phones? I can see they don't really care about the HD7 again since they are now dealing with the HTC One family and planning on Apollo devices but they should know that the HD7 might be OLD but still a good phone and needs support. I wonder why they even gave it a 1230mAh battery in the first place back in 2010 (a phone with such a huge display? was it a kid that made that damn decision?? Even the tiny Nokia Lumia 610 with minimal specs has a 1300mAh and my very old Sony Ericsson Aspen with minimal specs running the neglected Windows Mobile 6.5.3, less apps and less backgroud tasks having a 1500mAh battery)...did they plan for these things to happen to the HD7 so we might be forced to get new phones later in the year??
I sometimes feel disappointed in HTC since they kinda forget the phones they release and think about the future ones.
Nokia is new in Windows Phone bussiness but is far better than HTC, look at their apps, still cant believe I have to wait for 90 days to get CNN and ESPN apps. Nokia keeps on pushing hard and release firmware updates to fix battery issues and call ending problems in no time. HTC will never do this and my question is WHYYYY?? They don't even release new apps at the market place.
I plus my family and some good friends are huge HTC fans (for years) but not again since we are disappointed in them. I Will be getting an Apollo device and it's gonna be a Nokia Phone..no doubt...and I know people with the same idea are out there.
HTC PLEASE WAKE UP AND SHOW SUPPORT FOR YOUR ALREADY RELEASED DEVICES (HTC HD7) COZ YOU'VE STARTED LOOSING GREAT FANS TO NOKIA! (no wonder they are Windows Phone King now)...I'M PISSED THIS MORNING

I don't think HTC could push out any form of update that would increase battery life of the HD7. The battery is just too damn underpowered. The HD7 is my third but definitely last HTC device. I'm too disappointed with it hardware wise and even more disappointed when it comes to support. Be it HTC apps, update for them or even HTC's repair service here in Germany. I think I'll be going with a Nokia Lumia 900 as my next phone. HTC seems to be too focused on Android where the "fire and forget" attitude for devices seems pretty common.

Thank you my brother, this is exactly what I mean. They know they have Android so to hell if HTC Windows Phone devices screw up. HTC should know this is not an Android platform where powerful phones will be released and forgotten about too soon coz they wont be supported any longer...not even an OS update. I will rather choose Nokia who has a strong focus on Windows Phone than an OEM (HTC) trying to make love with two OSs.....You can never make two wives happy in your home.

The problem is not HTC or even Nokia, it's the tech. We've upgraded CPU, ram, displays and everything in our devices but, we are still using OLD battery tech from years ago.
The biggest Money maker in the mobile market will be to the person who designs a small battery that will get a TRUE 4-5 days standby with like 24 hour talk time on a device that is power hungry (big 4.7" display, LTE, etc) never mind a smaller device.
When I got my Trophy with it's 1300mAh battery I thought it was a joke.... I did get about 8-12 hours from it but, all I said....WTF

So to even ask if that's the case, can't they manufacture and release a higher capacity battery for the HD7 and put it on sale for HD7 users to buy. I know there are some batteries out there claiming to be higher in capacity with back covers since the original back coverswont be able to snap lock but a really nice one from HTC itself will be more satisfactory and appreciated.

I have to say, I don't get these complaints about the HD7's battery size. Yes, on paper it seems small, but I get 11+ hours of use out of mine using GPS for over a hour at a time multiple times a day, calls, web browsing, messaging, games, etc. I work in delivery, so I use my GPS a lot & at times have to wait over a hour between deliveries & use my HD7 to play games/music/movies & browse the web during that time. I frequently work 8-11 hours straight & still have over 50% of battery life left at the end of the day. The one thing I will say is that OEM's are getting lazy with their designs, accessories, & features. It used to be great opening your new device just to see what was coming with your device. Now, we don't even get a real wall charger, just some USB thing. Sometimes, we don't even get earphones, granted they are garbage. The designs are all the same now. I miss the T-Mobile Wing that had a nice Blue case.

Maybe you were lucky to get a good HD7 out of the lot....maybe it was designed specially for HTC 's CEO Peter Chou instead of you.

Got lucky? I highly doubt it. My HD7 is the same as everyone else's. I've had many devices, T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur), AT&T Tilt, & T-Mobile Touch Pro2 and my HD7 has the best battery life out of all of them. My roommates both have Lumia 710's & they get the same battery life as me. As David said, battery life is not going to get any better till we have a better battery technology. Larger batteries just will take up more space. Making devices bigger & heavier. This is something all OEM's must work with & find a middle ground where the device isn't too big/heavy & gets decent battery life while remaining cost effective.
P.S. You got a thanks by mistake. Hit the button by accident.
P.P.S. I've seen some devices with 4.3 inch screens & they are like bricks. A lot bigger & heavier.

I agree OP...my battery life on the HD7 after the T-Mobile 8107 update...

its not the fault of HTC. i bought last year in germany my HTC 7 pro and the back get scretched, the HTC was fallen out. i contacted HTC in the UK, and in a week i get first a battery that was theyr fault, but then two days after i get two back covers, to 0€. they have an great customer support for me. i could have paid for the battery but get it for free, they said its a present for me. ok its a lower power battery but its for my htc 7 pro. an if the first battery that was with the device drains in a few months i switch to the new one.

I sincerely hope that the rationalization isn't just for the hd7 because that was a very poor device
The radar I've gotten almost 3 days from moderate use and if I'm gaming a lot almost 2 days. The htc titan also has battery woes, but not nearly as bad as the hd7. That said, I think second gen htc devices are generally more power efficient versus its older models. I was crapping a brick after I reviewed the radar thinking to myself this is how it should've been

2nd Gen device use a different Chipset that is a lot more power efficient. Can't compare the 2. As for the HD7;
1 hr. of GPS with screen on 100% of the time using Nokia Drive.
7-5 min. phone calls with the office. Total of 35 mins.
1 hr. of web browsing.
WiFi was on all day, I never turn it off.
Played a few games & watched a move for about 1 hr.
A few text messages.
All in all, what I'd call moderate usage, which is what the specified battery life is based on.
Oh, & BTW, I am using Tile World Clock, which uses a background task to update the clock tile every 1 minute. This app has severely lowered the battery life I used to get.

They do, well I am not 100% sure about the HD7 but, HTC makes kits for a lot of their phones, the only problem is it makes the phone 2x as big.
I did this with one of my older HTC Windows Mobile devices, I had the huge battery and I did get a true 2-3 days standby with about 10-14 hours talk time. but, with the size that would no longer fit in my pocket.
No matter what someone can say here but, kits or not, the problem is still the same. Old battery tech in Modern phones.
Its almost like putting a Chevette motor in a Ferrari, The car has what it needs to do, sport body, 18" high performance tires, etc but, it's the power house that is the bottle neck. Why someone would do someone would do that is behind me besides the goverment, who wants you to buy a car that will go 150+ but, wont let you drive it more than 65mph...but that's for another discussion...
On the other side...If they made a phone with a 5000mah battery(something that would give crazy life), it would be HUGE. Put that besides some of the sexy phones, you wouldn't even give it a 2nd look. 5 Days standby but, I need a belt clip because it wont fit in my pocket or a nice slim phone with a batery that will give you around 24 hours but, claim 3 days (if you dont use it, it will last 3 days).
It's true...Sex sells....when it comes to phones...
Nothing will change with this subject, it will happen every phone, every model, till the battery tech changes. The current tech just no longer works with what we have.

Really ? Are you kidding ? Let me go back to my old flip phone. As if I am not getting emails coming in right away or text messages right away, What is the POINT of a smart phone ??
I understand turning off wi-fi if your not in range, etc but, to turn off your internet on the phone ? Really ? Just get a old phone and let's go back to the dark ages....

I do not believe marco was saying that even though you do not need to turn off 3G like you do Wifi. I think the sentiment is managing your phone can go a long way. We can do things like turn on what you need when you need it (Bluetooth, Wifi) and adjust your screen brightness.

I love HTC, my Arrive is built like a tank and has help up well with extensive use for over a year now without a case or screen protector of any kind. They build their phones well, that's for sure.
With that said, like most of you I have always hated the battery life on the HTCs I have owned, including the HTC HD, HDII, Hero and Arrive. Hopefully Nokia becoming a player again in the US market will light a fire under their butts, and they'll realize that skimping on battery life isn't acceptable.

Can one Gadget (AKA The Desire) do it all?

Hey People, the more I use this excellent phone the more I wonder can it really replace all of my gadgets on a day to day basis?
I wrote a piece on my blog about this in detail, but what do you think?
Gadgets I use the most on a day to day basis are:
Laptop - Internet and E-mail
Camera
Sat Nav
Phone
PMP - Music and Video's
My verdict was 99% a yes, and close to 100%.
Any thoughts!
It can do VOIP/SIP over HSDPA extremely well with a little help from SipDroid which I just set-up. Yay, for the Desire. ^_^ And for cheap calls!!
As for the laptop replacement it's quite adequate for my morning commute to work but when I need to do something fiddly like setup my PBX I prefer to tether my laptop.
As for replacing everything else, yeah pretty much, although whether it can replace one's girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other is a matter for debate.
LOL since when has ones, Girlfriend/Boyfriend etc, been a gadget? (why do I feel like that will spawn innuendo?)
I bought because if this!
Finally AIO device
Internet and E-mail
Camera(before used camera)
Sat Nav
Phone
Music and Video's(before used MP4)
It could, if the battery technology was at a point where the phone could last a decent amount of time when playing videos, music, making calls and surfing. If you do everything on your phone it zaps the battery. That's why I'm keeping my cowon s9 for video/music use.

That's a valid point. I spend a lot of time on the road in my car, so a car charger helps with that!
yes i think that HTC DESIRE is the AIO device anyone needs. but the concern and main problem is here too....if i use all the features all day i only get up to the evening max...then charger is on
So would you compromise the look to interoperate a bigger battery? That's the question here?

I think I don't need extra battery, it can last for one day if I use all it's features
I couldn't compromise on the shape, I'm hoping that a 2000mah + extended battery that is the same size will be released. I've actually been using my laptop to charge my desire on the go, lol.
i must say that its replaced a my ipod touch and n97 (email client on n97 was poor, video playback wasn't great and music player could have been better and sat nav was far too buggy) but i have to say i've been really taken with it, picks up emails faster than my outlook does for gmail, screen is fantastic, battery life is roughly the same as my itouch after a day's usage and since google maps navigation has come along its become even better! hopefully a bigger battery will be released soon as mentioned above
I have been a big PC user for most of my life and found I spent many hours on it each day catching up with whatever is happening online, etc.
Since getting this phone, I've actually found I spend half the time on the computer as I used to. I can happily be elsewhere and be able to catch up on forums through my phone with no discomfort
Technology is meant to make life easier and more efficient. The desire has certainly done that for me.
Battery , for me, is the biggest issue.
If we can get a better battery, it would be superb.
I use the phone a lot. (I haven't made a single call with it yet either as my number has still to transfer over).
But, I don't manage to last the whole day without needing a charge early evening.
I think once the novelty of the phone has worn off it will be better, but even then, it's not as if I've been using it so heavily.
Small amount of Satnav to test it out.
Fair amount of internet during the day (switching between mobile data and wireless depending on proximity of wifi network).
Screen more often than not turned almost all the way down, unless light doesn't permit.
I never get through a full day without a charge...
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Are there any apps which export the phone's current settings, so that the set-up can be analysed by others (like the nice people on here) in order to work out a more power efficient set up?

You will see looking around these forums there is a lot of discussion an battery life! Personally I find that there are certain Apps that seem to drain my battery very quickly. One culprit for some reason seemed to be the 'Sky News' app? I dont have a list of apps that cause it but like I said read a few of the battery threads and it will give you some idea. The Sat Nav is a huge drain on the battery, and even when connected to my current car charger it drains quicker than it charges. I know why, its because my car charger is only kicking out .5a unlike the required 1a that the device needs (needless to say a better car charger is on its way).
But normally I can get a day out of it no problem. And If I use the Sat Nav its gonna be plugged in to a charger anyway...
I am happier with my Desire than than any other gadget I'be owned. The only problem is memory for apps. I'v havent got that many but I'm still short on space. what's the point in having a superphone if you can't show it off? I have 8 gig memory card but can't use any that space for apps! Madness!
Apps are limited un production by this and won't be a real co.tender to the iPhone appstore until it's solved.
If anyone know how to get apps on to SD on the desire please let me know. Would make this thing pretty perfect.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Desire can replace a lot of gadgets but it's definitely not a replacement for a laptop or a camera.
IMHO, no. I've used it for a few weeks now, and at one point considered replacing my current phone with it but...
1. Appalling battery life, maybe a working day of usage, and if I'm having to put it on charge in the evening, I'm not using it.
2. Lack of stability - applications crash out at random, shutdowns frequently hang. If I have to take the battery out to reset it, a real pain if I'm out walking, it's not ready for frontline use. While I've been typing this, the browser has completely locked up.
3. Flash memory shortage; when it's rooted, or the OS supports install-to-card, this won't be a problem, but I'm not prepared to spend a lot of time managing memory. If I need to spend a lot of time maintaining the device, I might as well use WM.
4. Odd Calendar syncing - I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I want control of how my calendars are synced to the device; Android doesn't give me that. If I want to look back a few months and check the last time I took a leave day, it may not have synced. Shabby.
5. GPS - I imagine Copilot works well on this, but a few hours testing Google Maps Navigation at the weekend really brought out serious flaws, particularly when passing through areas with no cellular data coverage. A SatNav system has to sit in the dashboard mount and just work reliably for the whole trip or it's worthless, GMN didn't.
It's a nice device to play with, and there are some good, useful applications, but I need a reliable phone, and this isn't it. Hopefully the Evo will be.

[Q] Would this phone work for me?

Hi guys.
This is a post of mine that I made on the general XDA forum:
Hello everyone,
I would like some advice from you guys as I think you know what you're talking about (and I don't in this area )
Situation:
* not an IT'er, hence not informed about these things
* Current phone = Nokia E51
* Has a long battery life and hence very reliable
* I have a long commute to work every day
Lots of time (waiting) on the train
Would like a phone to mitigate the boredom
Expectations for a new cell phone:
* Battery life of minimally 24 hours
I want to be able to take it off the power grid at 7am on a friday only to have to plug it back in again around 7am on saturday with quite some power (20-25%-ish) to spare
* After having done the following:
some texting and a few minutes of calls throughout the day and evening
browsing/using youtube/watching some movies or listening to music for +-2hours
being able to go out with it at night and google some random stuff (i.e. checking which movies they're playing etc.)
without having to worry in any degree whatsoever that I'll be left with a dead phone in case something unexpected happens during the night (car breakdowns or other accidents, hospital visits, friends or family who urgently need to contact me, etc.)
* Other points of interest:
Budget doesn't matter too much, can be cheap and can be expensive
Screen needs to be fit for reading on the internet/some pdf's etc
No physical keyboard
I do not care about the camera functions
Already took a look at:
* Windowsphone / blackberry (Not my cup of tea)
* HTC (Have only heard bad things about this, and all the people I know who had one got rid of it)
* Iphone (Itunes annoys me, and so do the apple people who freak out about their cell phones)
* Samsung Galaxy S2
Was blown away when I saw this phone
Went to order it yesterday after having read unanimously positive reviews (techradar and such)
Then read about the battery life span which renders it useless to me (had no idea that people can live with that kind of thing in this day and age)
Cancelled it about 2 hours ago and got my money back, thankfully.
* Nokia 5800
link to phone
My brother has this and is happy about it
I can't imagine there's nothing better on the market than a 3 year old phone
So long story short:
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you guys might have for a phone that would suit me. Perhaps I'm too demanding for current technology?
Thanks guys.

Somebody on a different forum told me to take a look at a Defy and try and get Cyanomod on it. What are your opinions on this, given my needs and concerns?
great phone, and battery life can easily fit under your requirement, with CM7. camera pretty hopeless unless in bright lights, but since you're not bothered, it's a no-brainer.
probably the best phone that fits your requirements, but then again, HTC Incredible S is pretty up there as well. just that Defy is smaller, and tougher.
I'd definitely recommend this phone to you. It's very quick, especially with Android 2.2 or higher and also the battery life is excellent for a smartphone. I can squeeze about 2-3 days out of it with average use (about the same as you are planning to use it).
I don't see a reason why you wouldn't like this phone.
I also had the Nokia N97 which is about the same as the Nokia 5800 (only difference is the keyboard) and I'm very glad I have the Defy now. My N97 would barely last a day and was very slow.
I'm gonna have to agree I came from a nexus one and my defy is as fast, if not faster then it and gets a 24 hour battery easy. When I take my phone off the charger and head to work I don't take it out until lunch it still has a full battery, that and if you do a dirty job like I do it's dirt and water proof so your covered. I just can't wait for a defy 2
Sent from my Defy
Alright. Thanks for the replies guys.
I decided to look into it, then came across these comments:

I'll spare you the trouble of reading them, but 95% of them are outspokenly negative (mostly regarding battery life and build quality). I don't know what to make of that.
Also, if I'd get it I'd like to get the latest android OS on it, can i do that without having to make motionblur accounts and what not?

Battery life is significantly improved by installing custom ROMs from what I've heard. And, complaining about the build quality of a rugged phone? That doesn't make any sense.. it feels very solid in the hand, what's more is that additional sense of security you get from the plugged-up sockets.
The problem with most of these reviews are (I'm assuming) that they take the product as-is. The benefits you get from a custom ROM are amazing, but some people just don't bother or haven't even heard of one. Since you've come to this place, I'm guessing you fit in neither of those categories, so good on you
P.S. Quarx is doing a very nice job getting us CM7 on the Defy - that's worth keeping an eye on.

Since you've come to this place, I'm guessing you fit in neither of those categories, so good on you
P.S. Quarx is doing a very nice job getting us CM7 on the Defy - that's worth keeping an eye on.

Sounds reasonable.
I'm leaning towards this phone more and more, but think that if I get it, it means that I'll have to get CM7 on it (better battery/no branded stuff). Just a bit afraid of messing it up since I don't have any concept of what "flashing" and all the other stuff means.
I found a guide on here, but if anything happens beyond that guide I'd be dead in the water (and even then...).
be brave and take the plunge. you might just find that it isnt that hard after all. even if you do screw up, you wont go far wrong with flashing rsd lite again
Another recommendation for the defy from me. My wife has got the Desire S and it is a lovely phone but the Defy with CM7 gives me better battery life, smaller in the pocket and it runs really smooth and quick. It is pretty rugged so I think that those who complain just abuse their phones.
I am a bit of a battery freak (can't stand the idea of bad battery life) and the defy lasts me several days.
It is the first phone that has lasted me more than 3 months ..... normally I just get bored of them but this one ticks all the boxes.
I am completely new to flashing ROMs and I just followed the FAQ guide for CM7 and it was much easier than I thought it would be. Just read up and follow step by step.

A short VZ GN review. Please feel free to share.

About 7 people in line. I have a friend who works at the store so he had mine ready to go. My transaction time was literally less than 3 minutes.
I power the device on and take the sticker off the screen. There is a sticker under the sticker?! NOPE! It's the "Google" logo and it is so sharp I thought it was a decal. I started getting excited. The boot animation is cool to say the least.
I set it to "Back up my apps" so it starts downloading them.... like 65 of them. I live in an LTE area, but on my mile long drive home, every single app had installed....no issues, no errors, all ready to go.
The device isn't as wide as I expected and is longer than I thought it would be. I started messing with it and customizing it. I LOVE Go launcher, so I try to start to convince myself I don't need it. After toggling back and forth between GO launcher and the stock I realize that Go launcher frees up the "Google search bar" area allowing me to have another row of apps. Plus custom icons, renaming...it's Go launcher for now.
I bought the extended battery. (I know it's barely a bump over the stock one) So far, it has been running down VERY fast. I have it on the charge now, but this will be the 3rd time and I have hardly done anything other than set the device up.
Transferring Pictures, Ringtones, etc was very, very easy.
In use....well. It's fast. The screen will still lag a bit now and then stock or Go Launcher, it doesn't matter. The display resolution and pixel density are awesome. Just came from an iPhone and I prefer this display.
I have only found 3-4 apps that will not work at all on this device. Surprisingly The Sims and FIFA 11 are among them. The other is AVC. (Advanced volume control to lock your ringtone so you don't mute it in your pocket)
This is the first Android phone I have had that I have not installed Advanced taskiller on. I feel naked without it, but I know, I know...you don't need it.
The only things that bother me so far are...
A. Getting used to ICS. This is a HUGE change. You kind of understand what things are and where they are located, but it can be annoying to try to find simple system settings at times.
B. I have had a lot of "Large" phones. This is the only one I can literally not operate with one hand. It is so tall, it is very hard at times.
C. Searches in the market stay in the "search" field. Lets say you search "Battery"....find something, install it, YAY!. Now you hit search and type "Picture". In the past it cleared the space and you would find items that contained "Picture" but now it searches "BatteryPicture". Not a huge deal, but annoying having to clear it every time.
D. Copy and paste are still strange to me. Some apps like Gmail have their own dedicated buttons. Others you double tap....
E. Speakers are QUIET! I mean....really quiet. I am an audio engineer and have processed my ringtones for maximum volume with out distorting them. They are still pretty quiet.
Over all..... Good device. It will take some getting used to. I like it a lot, but like I said, not much actual use out of it yet. I hope this is helpful, thanks for reading!
i've been reading about the battery complaints for weeks now. decided to buy an extended battery because of them.
but in the meantime i figured i'd run with the stock battery just to get an idea of how my personal usage would affect battery life.
i literally walked out of the vzw store at about 9:20 this morning all of the defaults, account added and backed up apps downloading. i had about 48% battery life.
since that time i have downloaded apps, played with facial recognition, the camera, video camera, have my gmail acount syncing in the background, used Sesmic(twitter) and setup Beautiful Widgets.
i didn't hit 0% until about a little over 5 hours later. now that does include about 2 hours of also being connected to wifi.
in summary, if i can get about 10 hours of "normal" use out of the stock battery, that's personally not bad at all in my opinion. considering i'll never technically be that far away from a power source of some kind.
The extended battery is ~13.5% bigger than the stock battery. Can't expect it to magically make battery life drastically longer.

who was looking for drastically longer?
I am VERY curious on battery life on this
Anyone who is complaining about the initial charge has outrageous expectations. The first charge is always poor. Give it 3-4 cycles then post an opinion.
My GSM lasts all day with no issues. Maybe LTE will kill the battery. Who knows but the GSM life is great.

Yeah, I mean coming form 3500MaH Sedios on Thunderbolts, EVOs, etc... I didn't expect it to be a miracle. When I typed the original post I was at 65%. I am now at 75%.
It's a 4G phone. I mean, I know what's to be expected. Overall, I really like it. Now I have it completely "Customized" I will probably reply once I get some actual hands on use in the apps.
I just bought GTA III...that should do a number on the battery life.
The first couple of cycles won't last long, especially with you playing with it. My phone reports the screen accounting for 60% of the used battery. If this is true, the black background I just switched to may help, as it did on my incredible's AMOLED. My Bionic had pretty poor battery life, with minimal use. I'm loving ICS now, although I wish I could use custom auto-brightness scaling. I don't want or need my screen to look crazy good all the time.
OK. So several games load faster and smoother than on my iPhone 4. Performance is fantastic. Still surprised about how many apps "Are not compatible", but I would rather have that then crash after crash.
I'm with you. I'm using a black background, but the screen 60-80% of my battery life. The battery seems to be charging up quicker now and now that I have got all of my apps signed in and customized the way my OCD demands, I am feeling more at home.
Great device so far. Can't wait for a 3000+MaH personally.

It's great.
Went from the G2z to the Resound to the Vzw Nexus.
ICS is slick. Love the tactile feedback on the keyboard. At no time did I have to adjust to the larger screen like I thought I would.
The Nexus has a weird/different scrolling physics. Makes it feel less responsive but nicer looking. I can't say its bad but takes getting used to.
Haven't had much time with it but Gallery won't find my wallpaper collection. Have to use a file explorer to set my wallpapers.
Dialer kept dialing digits while I was talking. Could have been a fluke.
Screen looks great. Reminds me why I missed my Nexus One.
Things slippery though. Wonder if they'll make rubber back plates.

Jury still out for me...
I am sure this will probably cause a stir, but 12 hours into mine (before you flame me for being a troll, I was already a VZW customer on the Bionic) and I am still not completely sold (yet?). I am also not a Moto employee, etc. I am just posting my honest observations thus far. The RAZR is nice, but the lack of a removable battery was the deal-killer there and kept me on the Bionic.
I am in the STL metro market, and I don't think this Nexus has the radio/rf performance of the Bionic. I don't seem to hold a 4G signal as long as I did and it seems weaker in known strong areas coming from the Bionic.
I am seeing some quirks also, perhaps these are ICS-specific. For example, when using the official mobile hotspot app, it is more difficult to get to (there doesn't seem to be an icon for the "app") and I cannot find the option to not broadcast the SSID. Perhaps I am missing it, but I don't see it and have looked for it.
Ironic as it may seem, I am missing the Bionic at this instant. I liked the ability to wirelessly charge it on the Qi pad, and I do miss the MicroSD card slot (even though I know the GN has 32GB onboard). I also know I am probably one of about 10 whole people who use Webtop, but I have to admit I really like it. Being able to dock your phone and use it as a PC (I know it has its limitations) is approaching some Minority Report futuristic fun.
I am going to continue a cautious eval, but I do wonder if I will be patient enough to see it through. Just don't think I can wait 6 months for Moto to push out ICS for the Bionic.
Just my 2 cents...
-Rob
Wireless Charge and WebTop are nice features if you use them.
I think the Rezound has a Wireless Charge option. It has lots of battery door contacts. I don't think it comes like that out of the box but I think the Wireless Charge kit comes with the dock and a battery door. Of course you'd lack a Webtop. The Rezound was pretty nice IMO. I think I woulda kept it aside from already being sold on the Nexus. They're work phones (for me) and the Rezound had a real good feel to it.
See I have an Asus Transformer that I carry with me when I need it. I go between a PC, Tablet, and Phone. Having a separate Tablet with a 10 hour battery has its perks. By the time you buy the WebTop "screen" you're 80% to a tablet.
Perhaps you should rethink your situation before jumping into another device.
Hmmm...interesting. Needs more rabble.

It's oooookkkkkaayyyyyyyy!!!!
Rabble rabble rabble.
Coming from an iPhone 4S I'm very impressed with my Nexus so far. I've been running both side by side all week and I've decided to keep the Nexus and send the 4S back.
At first the size bothered me as it's quite a slippery thing and I nearly dropped it the other day (just managed to catch it in time before it bounced on a stone floor!). So now I have a case for it which sorts that problem out.
The other thing I've noticed about it which I never do with my iPhone, is I if I pick it up with my left hand, then I'll use my right hand to operate it. However if I use my right hand, then i'll use my thumb to operate it (I'm right-handed). Plus that stops me hitting the volume buttons all the time reaching for the power button ;-)

Do I return the phone DOA or,

Hi guys, Im new to the forum and figured there would be some pretty cluey tech guys on here to ask some questions/raise concerns of mine.
I have a HTC one X and it has the banding issues, especially when running games or youtube. It also makes click or pops in my headphones when scrolling. The battery is very random, one day I got an amazing 16 hours with moderate/solid use (2.5hours talk time, lots of internet, bluetooth andWIFI on, etc), but then the day before I got maybe 6.5 hours.
The whole warming up thing is a non issue, its a quad core device in a 8mm shell - its going to get warm I belive.
But the above issues are real, Ive never seen this ugly banding or green static down the left side of the screen? Crazy and ugly!
My iPhone 4S was having some battery issues when i first got it, and would drain in 4 hoursm but once fixed it can last with bluetooth and WIfi on the whole time, about 18-24 hours no prob on a regular day for me.
Obiously HTC is more power hungry, more pixels (double) and quad core etc... but why is it random?
Oh yeah the last problem, when I used the camera, 2 issues.
1. It started flashing white screens on and off.
2. It doesnt record audio sometimes.
Sorry but this is horrible and how long does HTC take with the updates, I know apple usually 2-4 weeks.
Any help or suggestions? Ive had a SGS2 before as well, and although not as impressive and having an ugly UI, it was stable.
I'm with you on the battery, it doesn't make sense at the best of times.
I am yet to get more than 3 and half hours on screen time (real usage) yet though and i'm on about my 7th or 8th charge cycle.
This is good as it gets I fear.
It is a little strange that it could be so bad, and they made the battery non-removable? Surely they tested it and found they could make it last a whole day (12-16 hours moderate use) Its a mobile phone, not a home phone.

Regrading glitches if your are getting them on the side of the screen and while gaming and camera, you might have a defective unit i advice you call HTC
However make sure you have non of the develop options enabled, they look like bugs when enabled if you didn't know what you are doing
Try the tips in here first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1590956
Random battery has to do with android and there might be an app in the background eating it or something off in the firmware, an update regarding this is imminent
HTC usually is generous on updates, major OS updates take up to 6 months, bug fixing small updates doesn't usually take long two updates can happen in the same month, flagship phone get the priority in updates

Impressions after 1 day of use

So I was interested in this phone from the moment that it was announced. I've been waiting for a phone of reasonable size, but that also has high-end specs, for quite some time now, and the Razr M finally fit the bill. In the past year or so I've owned the following: 1) HTC One X (returned due to all sorts of bugs, including delays in receiving push email, not to mention that it was huge); 2) Galaxy Nexus (this was actually an AWESOME phone... just way too big for my taste. My wife owns it now.); 3) HTC One S (decent size, although still much larger than the M. Riddled with bugs though... funky wifi, delayed push notifications, etc.).I was not on Verizon prior to yesterday, but I did have various other incentives to switch from AT&T, so I waited a week to see what people's initial impressions of Razr M were before I finally pulled the trigger yesterday. Here are my first impressions after ~24 hours of use.
Build quality and form factor are awesome. This thing is just a perfect size. Roughly the same size, or even smaller, than last year's phones with 4" screens. I've been waiting over a year for a high-end phone that's not huge, and this thing does not disappointment. The little flap that has to be pulled up to put in the SIM and SD cards feels a little old school, but it seems solid enough. Overall, if you've been waiting for a smaller phone, I think you won't be disappointed.
The M is fast and smooth. I've owned a number of high end phones in the last few months and the M is as fast as and as smooth as any of them. Benchmarks prove it (read reviews; I'm not going to post any numbers here.). If you are obsessed with specs and benchmarks, the M will not disappoint. If all you care about is a smooth user experience, the M will certainly not disappoint.
Blur / Motorola android overlay. I don't really like it. It's MUCH better than old versions of blur, and some of you will probably think my complaints are nitpicky, but I just prefer the stock experience (so I use Nova Launcher). First of all, I don't like that the "4g" symbol stays in the notification bar even when connected to wifi. It's the only Android phone I've ever used that leaves the cellular network symbol ("4g" or "3g" or "H+" or whatever your network happens to have) in the notification bar when connected to wifi. It's just a waste of space, and it makes you wonder if the mobile network is somehow sucking down battery life even when it shouldn't be.
Second, I don't like the fact that the dock icons have labels beneath them. WTF? Again, I don't think I've ever seen a launcher that puts labels in the dock. I get rid of all icon labels anyways using Nova, but labels in the dock is just too much for me.
Third, I don't like the persistent google search bar. Even if removed, you just have a row of dead space at the top of the screen. All of these things led me to ditch the stock launcher and go with Nova. I think Motorola's attempt at a quick settings area (scroll all the way to the left) was a pretty good effort, but I think it should have just stuck with the tried and true quick settings in the notification pulldown. This way, you wouldn't lose it when you change launchers. Overall, this version of blur is probably the best yet, but it still doesn't compare to AOSP, nor does it compare to Nova Launcher, in my opinion.
Bloatware on this phone is bad. All sorts of garbage. Thankfully, 95% of it can be disabled. Even so, what a waste of space. I really hope the carriers are making a ton of money off of bloatware, otherwise they are just idiots for continuing to include it despite a very clear message from users that we don't want bloatware.
The screen on the phone is good. I won't go into pentile, but it doesn't bother me. The one comment I have is that compared to my HTC One S (which also has a 4.3" amoled pentile display) the whites on the M are more of a dull yellow. You only notice it if you hold the M up next to a phone that has superior whites, but if you do, you will see that whites on the M are pretty bad. No big deal to me though, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Signal strength has been a concern for me with this phone. There were some reports of weak 4g LTE signal compared to other Motorola phones on Verizon. Honestly, I haven't really been able to nail this down. I can say that both the 1x and 3g EV-DO signals on this phone seem to be just as good as they are on blackberries, iPhone, and other Motorola phones, so I don't think there's a 1x or 3g signal problem. Unfortunately I haven't been able to directly compare it to other LTE phones on Verizon. If I can, I'll report back. Suffice it to say that in the metro-DC area, I hold a steady and decently strong 4g LTE signal, so if it weren't for the reports, I would have no reason to believe there are any signal issues.
Battery life is awesome. When I picked the phone up yesterday and turned it on, it had 42% battery life. By the time it died this morning, it had been on charge for about 16 hours, and it had 3 hours 20 minutes of screen on time. That extrapolates to about 35 hours off charger and 7 hours screen on, if starting from a full battery. Given, this was mostly on wifi, but that's still pretty good. And the battery hasn't even been conditioned yet, so I suspect it might get even better. Also, this was with no battery saving mechanisms in place. I'm not using smart actions or juice defender or anything else. I've got a gmail account, gtalk, and a couple other things syncing in the background. Overall, compares favorably with every phone I've ever used so far. Hopefully the first day was representative!
The notification LED. This thing is effing awesome. I LOVE notification LEDs, and for some reason most phones have really crappy ones, if they have them at all. The Galaxy Nexus (and now the S3) have great ones. But HTC devices have horrible LEDs the size of pin heads, that are recessed into speaker grills so you can barely even see them. The M's notification LED is bright, large, and easy to see from a distance and from an angle. LOVE it. It also works with Light Flow out of the box. So far I'm using Green, Magenta, Orange, Yellow, and Red, and they all work. Haven't tested blue, pink, or purple, but no reason to think they wouldn't work, too.
Call quality. Who makes phone calls anymore these days, anyways? =P (haven't tested call quality yet. sorry).
Camera. Haven't really taken many shots, but initial impression is--as most of the reviews said--mediocre. Not terrible by any means, and sufficient for my needs (taking the occasional photo of my dog). But clearly does not hold a candle to the amazing camera on the One S or One X.
Wifi / GPS / Bluetooth. Haven't tested GPS or bluetooth yet, but the wifi antenna appears to be awesome. I get a much better signal (and speeds) on the M than I get on the One S or on my wife's Gnex. Thumbs up on wifi.
Anyways, sorry for the long post. I have too much time on my hands. But my initial impression of the phone is extremely positive. If anybody is on the fence, I'd say go for it. Fingers crossed that a few devs pick this thing up and that we at least get root. But because I love the size of this phone so much, and since I haven't really located any annoying bugs thus far, I think it's a phone I'd be content to own for a year or two even without root.
9/24 5:30pm EDT update:
Call quality is fine. Honestly, I'm not a call quality audiophile. Everything is loud and clear, just like it has been on pretty much every cell phone I've owned in the past few years. Nothing unusual to report.
GPS is really solid. It locks MUCH more quickly than either the Galaxy Nexus or the HTC One S. GPS Status also shows that it both sees and uses a few more satellites than the One S does. For instance, I was sitting near a window in my living room, and the M was using 10/19 satellites, while the One S was using 7/17. GPS gets a thumbs up.
And this is probably something I'll create a separate thread on, but I'm getting some wakelocks on the M that I do not get on the One S. I have the M and the One S setup identically. When the One S's screen is off, the phone is in deep sleep. The battery settings show that the phone is almost never awake unless the screen is on. The M, by contrast, is frequently awake for very short periods of time even when the screen is off. It does not seem to be causing much battery drain, as I'm still losing well less than 1% per hour on wifi (when the screen is off), but it is nevertheless worth noting because presumably it should not be happening. I'm in the process of trying to figure out what is causing the wakelocks, but haven't figured it out yet. I somehow suspect it has something to do with "phone idle" taking up a much higher percentage of battery consumption than I've seen on other phones. In any event, I'll start a separate thread on this when I gather a bit more info, but just something to be aware of.
Very thorough description phositadc, thanks!

Pretty much mirrors my experience with this device. Except, I use Apex launcher rather than Nova. Also, coming from a Droid X2, this phone has a tendency to slip out of my hand sometimes (gives me a heart attack).

Yeah none of the reviews mention it but I agree it's worth noting that the phone is pretty slippery (due to its size, materials, or both). I was planning to go without a case but if cruzerlite or diztronic makes one I'll probably get one.

I downloaded desktop vizualizer to make an icon. Than removed the stock icon I wanted to replace it with. Then you just drag the new icon in its place.
Hope this helps.

muffled audio.
I got a Razor M for my wife & she's been complaining about voice quality, says it sounds very muffled. So it's going back to Amazon for replacement, we'll see if the 2nd one will be any better.

I use the phone a lot, about 3000 peak minutes a month. I find the phone sounds better than just about any cell phone I've used. The best part is the phone is nice and loud. My use is in NYC where the streets are noisy, and, I work on construction sites. This phone is far better with notifications, earpiece and rear speaker than any other phone I've used.
Battery life for me is a mixed bag. I can get down to 1.5%/hour so sitting on my desk I easily get a day, probably two in standby. So far, in use, it hasn't been that good. After about eight hours, the battery is down to 15%. The battery charges pretty fast though so it takes the sting out of being off charger with heavy use during the day.
Screen for me is as good as anything else I've used. I rather have the D3 screen which could be better viewed in daylight. I don't use my phone for movies, games or serious photos so the screen doesn't need to be retina.
Thanks for the info guys. The wife is CRAZY about the circle widgets and for that reason alone she's probably going get this phone but the mediocre camera could be the reason she goes with an S3. You never know what she's going to like or why. Example, her favorite rifle of mine is my FAL. Why? Because it has a carrying handle and "it's just handy." She bought her Toyota Matrix because it had a wiper on the back window and really liked that feature. lol
Thanks for a great review. I played with the phone at a Verizon store and it did not strike me as particularly snappy. However, that was probably due to the blur launcher and an abused display specimen.

Yeah I think that is true... the one I used at the store was mediocre as are many store devices... but the one I bought is as fast and smooth as any android device I've used.
