********** This is DamianGTO Steam kernel **********
This is the only working steam kernel for froyo 2.2.1.
With this you get a recovery that has touchscreen and all tool you need for your phone.
You also get a good kernel thats fast and very close to stock kernel.
I also made this tool(Damian tweak) to make things a bit easier.
There is a Steam Rom also now. I made it to make it easier for all.
I also have a new kernel that has a simpler recovery, but all script is working.
So look at the DamianGTO Ultimate kernel.
This is what you get with this kernel:
- Full (multi-)touchscreen interface in the recovery.
- Ext2, Ext4, Jfs and rfs file system auto-detection support
- On-line help system
- A primitive File Manager
- An even more primitive console
- Crypto
- Configure options for Steam Kernel
- Afterburner post-flash utility
- 32 bit display support
- Backup/Restore
- Root (installs busybox 1.18.1 and superuser)
- Almost everything CWM had (supports both sdcards, even for usb storage mode, efs backup support, etc.)
- Afterburner
- Theme support with afterburner
- 350MB RAM
- Optimized kernel tweaks
- Alter minfree strict settings
- Deadline schedueler (Optimized)
- Tiny RCU( less memory footprint)
- lowmemorykiller patch
- Support for bootanimation.zip
- Made from froyo 2.2.1 source code.
- Initramfs from JS3 kernel
- No logging after booting the phone.
- Voodoo sound V4
This is a Beta version and it is not 100% stable.
Have always a backup before you use it and when you use it, so you don't loose your data if something unexpected happens.
ROOT:
If you want root you need to install busybox and superuser.
You also must convert your System to Ext2, Ext4 or Jfs.
Lagfix:
You can convert all partition you want to Ext2, Ext4 or Jfs.
I do use EXT2 only right now and its working very good.
Jfs has a bug if you use it on system. you loose all your sound.
This works best for me and its fast, but its up to you what you want to use.
Don't use Ext4 on the Cache if you need all 30MB for downloading from market.
Ext4 will take 4MB for its journal.
Bootanimation:
Put your bootanimation.zip in /data/local folder and it will use that next time the phone boot up.
You must also change it in recovery to use Android boot animation.
If you don't the boot animination will not work and the phone will be black until it has started up.
Theme:
You must change the script in the theme.zip file.
Look in the afterburner section how the script shall be.
You only need to change the updater-script to update-script and make the change thats needed.
I have put in Ext4 and Jfs support in the kernel. People ask to much about it and I dont think its fair for me not to use it when this is the only steam kernel on froyo 2.2.1 that works.
I still think ext2 is a better system for the phone and use it on the Data partition without any problem.
I also used Tiny RCU( less memory footprint) and lowmemorykiller patch to make the kernel a bit better.
**Update **
New kernel again (1k).
This time I did move it to 600HZ and optimized the cpu use.
It should be faster and smother then 1J, but not has as much battery drain then Speed_kernel.
I hope this is right settings and it will not drain more battery then stock.
You dont need afterburner to install themes.
But you still need to change the script to an update-script.
Then you can use the zip option in the recovery.
Afterburner:
Download the theme you want.
Download afterburner.zip( attached last in this post).
Open the zip file and put your theme zip in the catch folder and remove the other file.
Edit the afterburner.conf.
Change the TEST with the name of your theme and what your theme zip file is named.
---[ID:theme
---[NAME:Install TEST Theme
---[HELP:This will install TEST to your phone. Beware! You can only switch back to a previous theme if you have them in a afterburner file.
extract theme
install_package CACHE:TEST.zip
If your theme has updater-script and update-binary then they don't work.
To make them work you need to use update-script and remove both of the files.
In this new file you write where you want the file to be copied.
If you don't know how this script file works then ask and you will get help.
You can also put as many them zip file in the afterburner file you want.
Just copy all folders and rename the Theme folder to a different name and copy the text in afterburner.conf. and write the new folder name in the text you just put in. If you don't know how then ask and i will help you.
I will put some theme up thats already fixed later on.
If you have a theme that you want med to fix just give me a pm.
So try this Steam kernel and tell what you think. If you find any bug then tell me also.

Way to go.
i can use this with jpy 2.2.1?
I am going to test this!
Edit:
I flashed with a stock JP7 and then Damian's Steam Kernel afterwards.
Everything is working flawless, no problems at all even after two hours extensive using.
Quadrant shows a 1213 which is normal on JP7.
Later I am going to try with Lagfix enabled and other ROMs.
I like the Steam recovery, somehow strange, but kewl and modern ;-)
Kernel seems to be more responsive than the stock kernel!
ok, I flashed my fon with Nitr8's insanity 0.3.2 based on Android 2.2.1.
After that (without even booting it) I flashed with Damian's Steam Kernel.
Everything went flashless, Systems comes up fast - BUT:
The Baseband is NOT recognized from the Steam Kernel. There we still ned to fix, but everything else is working well.
Responsiveness is very good. I am very happy with it so far as it is looking promising.
Using the Quadrant Score gives me just 1180. This is really not enough.
Nevertheless it feels very responsive and smooth ??
Feelig (especially in Recovery Mode and other things like that) very dodgy and often throwing errors out on console makes me not worrying as it is still alpha.
Why is this kernel using 300Hz ? next I need to try some optimizations though.
Edit:
after 2 reboots suddenly the baseband is correctly recognized ??
so I can confirm now it works sufficent to be tested on JPY 2.2.1
Seems to work okey.
This kernel base is the same that the latest z4mod kernel I did.
So they should work the same after you booted up the phone.
The steam recovery is fun, but its need more work to be safe.

*** UPDATE **
I have fixed the root issues.
It should work, but if you get any problem just tell me
I did update the kernel file on the first post.
So download it if you use the first kernel.

The kernel is stable, but the recovery is still alpha and i must test that more and hope for an update if the steam engine.
But if you have a place for kernels thats not stable then you can use it.
I know many want a steam kernel and im suppriced that none have done any yet on jpx source that works.

Yes, maybe start in the beta section to see if is stable
Okay Damian.. Just jumped in with both feet into this Kernel..
Looks nice.. I will continue testing over the weekend,,
Well until I reflash, but the install was super easy, and it installed with no problems.. Looks nice and easy to use..
So far so good.
Installed this kernel under Darky's latest 8.0 ROM. Working fine so far!
I'm going to do some testing with all the settings today, keep you all informed.
Hi Guys,
Kinda n00b question:
Whats the difference between a ROM and a Theme? I'm running SimplyHoney 3.8 on my SGS, which I understand is a ROM. I want to apply a new theme, but from the installation guides it looks like its installing a ROM... so:
1. Will installing a theme wipe my apps and configs?
2. Whats the actual difference?
3. Do I need to get a theme to match my ROM?
I'd really appreciate answers, or directions to where should I ask this.
Many thanks,
SoundFX3D
1. Theme will only affect the appearance.
2. Rom is sort of like a package with all the features and tweaks included by the developer(s) which also has its own theme.
3. In the case of SimplyHoney, its has a blue theme. You can choose to flash another theme if you don't like blue. Just make sure its compatible with your rom version.
And no themes almost never wipe data so all your apps will remain.
Also on the subject of Simply Honey if you install a theme that you don't like or doesn't function as expected you can simply re-flash the Simply Honey rom and it wont wipe as it auto detects. You be right back where you started.
Sent from Simply Honey, Loved by Humans, Envied by Trolls! Using XDA premium of course.
basicly almost all so called roms out there are themes with kernel attached
90% or more files inside their 200mb packages are matching stock ones
but that way new user thinks, hell lot of good job i will donate =)
most of roms claims best stability, best speeds everything best
while speed depends on kernel used and system version basicly
so you have same insides in every each one of them with one of few kernels out there
only thing that difers them is theme used
everything is more or less placebo
Thanks a million u guys
$omator, I think that when you get a room you get a theme + kernel + android stuff + some apps that work well together (or should). So developers should have some credit.
Buy it is true that a 100% real rom is something like cyagonenmod.

well, Only thing I will agrre on is , the kernel builders and themers do NOT get enough credit for there work compare to rom builders, thats sad but again huge 'unknown difference between guy that make the voodoo stuff and guy that just compile it .
For the rest I disagree .. plain and simple , the way the framework files are handled when modified and how junk files/ids values present depends on the builder , the updater script, optimization of pngs, deodexed zip aligned , the init.d script chosen to go with the kernel are 90% of what makes a rom , on first boot when your dalvik is created the rom stability is created, some badly themed apks wont even run on first boot they require already present dex files so the system can correct the errors after the initial first boot (witch is long ) themers dont have to worry about that , but throw there files ina stock deodexed rom and flash iit full wipe letssee if your phoen runs smooth 'just becuz its 'JVQ with the latest OMG kernel.... 10% is placebo no doubt .. certainly not 90%%%
of course they are some rom chefs that take the work of others theme it and call it there ROM thats another story...
btw dont you run stock rooted kernel on odexed rom ??? if so thatwoudl lead me to believe you are VERY biased ....

same with galaxian kernel, it is bunch of features from every other kernel + bugs
bugs that are bugfixed every single day and new final version is delivered, that is said by him the best fastest stable bugfree and so on ....
this guy claimed 170$ for fixing bugs that he have made and that could be ironed in betatesting process if he would conduct one and features from other kernel devs basicly ;]
his thread lacks of current sources - i am suprised that his thread still exists and he is not kicked out

agree about the wipe, does not agree that optimizing zipaligning and all that are necessary
still majority of copied files are intact that is what ive ment
and those roms are basicly themes as if you would take the custom kernel out that is what your left with, a theme - that is my opinion i will try to hold on

or they leave old version of apps just because 'they still work on new version"
what is basicly reverting their theme/rom to a previous firmware revision
because those new files in most cases contain aside of some language bugfixes
a real bugfixing or optimization of code - but hey one say, it still works with the old one =)

- Mount, USB Disk, Gallery, 720p videos, Flash with video, sound streaming ...
Bugs:
- Graphical Glitches - Dont try to fix it, aint as bad as anyone thinks... you can live with it ! - or try and flash a .35 kernel, but performance goes down... is it worth it ?
- Sense Customization settings closes without launching the customization app
INSTALL PROCEDURE
MAGLDR partition sizes - Use Last 24mb NAND - 5/330/10
Install the rom as normal with CWM
Reboot and wait for the rom to finish first boot and complete the HTC wizard, wait a couple of minutes at the launcherpro desktop, you may config wifi and some settings but DO NOT add any accounts to accounts and sync.
Reboot
Flash the Data2SD in CWM
Reboot
Install Superuser from the market
I had to strip "everything" I could to get this rom to boot with enough NAND data space to function before rebooting again to install data2sd. I had 22mb data space left on my first boot.
Enjoy

Maybe a Sense 3.5 release but there isn't much difference between 3 and 3.5 for the purposes of this ROM, also I could not shrink a sense 3.5 rom enough for first boot so..
A. I need time to experiment with more stripping ideas
B. Learn how to integrate Siberes Data2SD
C. Figure out why removing the A2SD+ from the sense 3.5 runny roms released here completely breaks them.

Cool, you would be the first person other than me to use this rom
let me know how it goes asap, i want to be sure 330m system works, 315 worked for me but as you can see i have under 5mb left.
After you flash go to advanced and report errors, mount sdcard and check the cwm log and make sure all the minzips worked, to ensure you didint run out of system partition space.
And remember to enable use last 24 nand in magldr under services.

So your thinking this could be fixed in a .32 kernel if someone could figure out why the .35 kernel fixes it by finding the missing part ?
I am simply hoping soon Dorimanx might dev a .35 kernel with his performance modifications, I think he just needs time.
Just an update on this rom, the latest zram script by Dorimanx is clashing with this roms oom settings, I am going to work on tweaking it. I will post an updated zram script for this ROM once I am satisfied with the settings.

yes, that is what i want to say, I think that should has possible be fix. but if someday DM decide to coding .35 ... well, I thought we put it away temporary and try our best for cooking rom first, and if possible then we could try to fix and coding kernel together. because kernel builder not to many but have lot of chefs, so i thought maybe we should join to kernel part to find out the bugs.

Ok :good:
From my experience most of these tweaks are not needed if you are using Arcos CM9 or CM10, as the ROM is already opitmized.
When I was using Samsungs GB ROM some of these tweaks indeed improved the ROM, but while trying them in CM9 there was almost no difference because as I already said Arcos ROMs are already highly optimized.
Furthermore I find it very risky tu use them all together. Especially speaking about the Dalvik VM Tweaks. They can make the ROM unstable and cause misbehavior. It´s also known many build.prop tweaks that work well in GB and are improving the ROMs bahavior are causing the opposite in CM9 and CM10.
What I´m missing here is a full list of the tweaks that are added into this build.prop and what changes where made to the Dalvik VM.
A flashable Zip which is also making a backup of the present build.prop would be also preferable.

A flashable Zip which is also making a backup of the present build.prop would be also preferable.

yes I know that and I also recognize cm10 pretty good performance compared to GB or CM9.
but I have a problem when I play HD games, I get LAG. I tried to tweak the build.prop and the results are quite satisfactory and I can play hd games smoothly without install script.
I agree with honeyx - instead of re-using and re-merging tweaks, that initially came up years ago, we should focus on evaluating and mythbusting all those things.
The problem especially with such compilations is, that they contain dozens of configuration changes, initially thought for other android versions or devices. In many cases they simply have no effect or they make no sense.
Besides this, some changes can also be set via the UI:
E.g.
Code:
persist.sys.purgeable_assets=1
[...]
persist.sys.use_dithering=0
is also available via the Performance menu in CM (and i would not recommend to activate the first one).
I appreciate the effort made by bacrot78, but i do not think its the way to go when tweaking Android.

I understand your point, but again. In the first place i doubt all the tweaks there are necessary to improve the performance in games. Most of them can be applied via the UI without the need to add them into the build.prob. Others are already implemented into the kernel, so also no need to add them into the build.prob.
The ones that probably imprived your gaming experience are the Dalvik VM tweaks. But changing them can improve the performance a bit but cause instabilities. So you are turning your stable ROM into a unstable pre Alpha state just to play your games a bit more fluent.
If I were you, I wouldn´t play with the Dalvik settings but leave them as they are and wait till Arco releases Kernel 3.x with full butter support. He is often also updating the GPU libs, which can also boost up your games.
This is not just a good advice because I´m talking from my own experience where I also tried to optimize the Dalvik settings by just enabling and disabling some features to make the phone act faster. The result was an unstable SGW which kept to be unstable even after restoring my backup I made before adjusting the settings. So I had to make a total reset to get it working like before.
Furthermore adding such tweaks into the build.prob is like playing lottery. You can find one setting alone will improve some things. Another setting alone will do the same with other things but both together will cause the ROM to become usntable.
So it´s like XR-7 already said. This thread should be better changed into a discussion with the focus on evaluating and mythbusting all those build.prob tweaks. By trying them separately. One after the other and together.
Owh good review. I respect you, this thread turned into a discussion thread was not a problem maybe we can review together with the requisite mod BP installed ROM without a script. Since I also need input from all of you.
thank you

Infromation About CrossBreeder-
- This is a new take at Android lag reduction. It's lightweight and won't consume battery. Users have reported drastic improvements in usability and even benchmark scores. It will show noticeable improvements - Android devices from Donut to Froyo to Gingerbread to Honeycomb to ICS and Jellybean.
- This is a combination of 5 different methodologies to reduce Android lag.
- Removal of DNS lag . A lot of the lag in a lot of apps, apart from the GUI lag, is due to slow DNS querying, specially on the mobile network.
- CrossBreeder now runs a caching, parallelising DNS client on the device. So now most of your DNS queries will be served from the cache and if not found, the query will be sent in in round robin fashion to multiple DNS servers including Google DNS, OpenDNS and your home router and the reply will be served to you, hot.
- This speeds up network access and networked apps, like Browsers of course, and Tapatalk, Gmail and thousands of others drastically. And removes a lot of the lag where it was due to DNS querying. This will not increase your network or download speed but pages will load much faster.
- This will future proof your devices as more and more apps start using HTML5 and/or reside completely as web pages or the like.-
I Just thought, there are some great developers in our forum, with great tweaks, geared for their own specific purpose, and i thank them. I HAVE asked for permission to use these tweaks, to make a pack of the best, from the best taking a few of those great tweaks and putting them in one lightweight package. Now , I did NOT create any tweak in this pack. That is why introductions and thanks are in order.
ALL THANKS TO THESE GUYS

I am in no way responsible for your equipment, flash at your own risk
Download ComaDose version you prefer, from the downloads section, and put on root of phone
Boot into custom recovery
Flash ComaDose
Reboot to rom (flash stock kernel) or reboot system etc.
This is a .zip file, can be flashed with CWM recovery, put on root of phones storage, boot into recovery & flash.
Issues with repack and new Custom Recovery kernels-
Now Ive heard it works for some people on repacks, and ive heard of battery drain, and GPS taking along time to lock on others. But the best results i get, are out of the "stock" Leak kernels.
Conflicting issues with new Custom Recovery modded and released updated version

Test Init.d With The "21 Test-init.d" script
-THINGS YOU NEED-
Rom Toolbox (free or pro)
Root Access (superuser access) for Rom Toolbox
ComaDose Already Flashed
-Steps-
After ComaDose flash, if you want to check if your init.d is functioning properly you can check it with the 21 test init.d script...
After flash the test init.d script has already ran (on startup) now thwe sole purpose of this script is to show whether or not init.d
is properly functioning.
When this script is ran (executed) as all scripts in init.d are upon startup, it creates a file in the /data folder.
so why dont we take a look for it?
Using Rom Toolbox, go to the "root browser" tab (upon first startup youll be prompted to SuperUser permissions, Allow this)
Once in Root Browser youll be in the root of your device by default. ( / )
Click on the "Data" folder..
In the /Data folder, were looking for "Exit Only Init.d" file
if you see this file, your init.d is working and all scripts are running ...
If you dont see this file after reboot (post flash) you can execute the "21 test Init " script manually...
back out to the root of the phone, go into "system", then into "etc" then into the "init.d" folder and locate the "21_testinit.d" script, press on it , bringing up this menu.
press the "open as" tab, bringing up this menu...
then press the "script file" option..
Then you want to press the "execute Script" option, making sure the "execute as root option is checked, as shown below.
which will then execute the script using init.d support to do so.. looking like this
after its executed, go back into /data and find the "Exit Only Init.d" file if its there your init.d is working....
nice ... !
Hi sounds great. Will it work on top of custom roms like Crash? Thanks!

its running on the s4 9500 (thread there as well) 9505 , S3, E4GT , Galaxy Nexus. it will work if the kernel / rom has init.d support. its had a few problems with already heavily modded roms.. working great on many different roms, by many different devs... init.d support is required.. flash and let me know fellas.. please allow a full charge cycle before battery concerns.. (this is made to make your phone sleep like a baby, live wallpapers, widgets and other factors WILL affect battery life)

Hello. Crash is a stock based rom. One of the best ROMs for I9500 out there.
Perseus is a kernel, which is in alpha 9 stage. Dev of perseus is one of the most famous kenerl developers on xda. Go through the original development section, its hard to miss.
The combination works very good for me. My phone is silky smooth and am getting 5+ hours of screen on time. Although phone tends to get pretty hot while gaming. Then again i guess its the fault on samsung side.
I can Confirm that this mod is working on I9500, so far no problems
Mod is for both i9500 AND i9505... its actually Generic, will work on anything from, my Asus Transformer tf300t tablet to Epic 4g Touch.
