problem with overclock - HTC Wildfire S

My phone freezes just as or very soon after i choose to overclock in cm7 settings.
My last WFS was really loving the O/C.
Has anyone any solution. Many thanks
Edit: I can use userspace govenor and go to 806mhz but dont notice any difference in speed of hone. Tried cpu spy

Perhaps it's your kernel. Which kernel do you use? (go to Settings, About Phone, Software, More, Kernel version)
Also, what apps do you use to do the overclock?

It's likely your phone. Not all chips are made the same. Set your governor to performance and slowly ramp her up till it freezes. Then take a step down and leave it.

[Q] Kernels ain't working for me

Hello there,
I've been flashing kernels since I was in LeeDroid Froyo and got no problems. However since I switched to GB based roms such as RCMix3D and TB Fusion, my phone always freezes when I try setting Kernel-Lee-V3.1.1-2.6.35.13-CALLREC or MDJs v19 to maximum overclock so I have no choice to but to stay on stock kernel. I have no ext3/ext4 partition on my SD card in case you ask.
Current ROM: TB Fusion 1.1.2
Radio: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2
Any idea what should I do to solve this issue?

uoooo this is sooo dangerous for your handset... u can "smoke" it...

yes, your handset freezes because the overclock that u do its too high... underclock it at 1200-1400mhz & try...
and configure SET CPU features... like the standby status, etc....but do it with common sense....
think about that DHD proccessor goes by default at 1gz, really when we overclock the processor we are putting in danger the security of our device

Haha! I know that overclocking is quite dangerous. Back on the froyo days, my phone is quite stable around 1.8ghz so I'm just wondering why is this happening (maybe my phone's processor is starting to fry up? ). Is there any effect if I'm using smartass profile on those kernels I've mentioned?

i hope that the processor works or not works (don´t crashes a little bit...)
but the reason of your freezes maybe (almost sure) because froyo & gingerbread don´t works at the same form, and gingerbread need more resources & stability for to work correct... don´t forget that the kernel manages the hardware...
if u force it......... u know what can happen...

You have mentioned about those "resources", is there any special measure that I need to do or what? I'm using the smartass profile on those kernels but still *sigh*
Anyway, I've observed on your sig that yours is overclocked @ 1.8ghz even though you're running GB, me envy

you only should do a good over/underclock & set the correct cpu governor for your daily use....
well, you know ho is @MDeeJaay? the developer of MDJ kernels and roms...
he explained smartass with this words:
SMARTASS GOVERNOR - is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works - by taking over the idle loop - is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the "old" minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 245Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 245 - why?! - it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 998/245 kernel, it will sleep at 245.

MAX SPEED:1113 MHZ
MIN SPEED:245 MHZ
PROFILE: screen off; 245 MHZ max.
245 MHZ min.

Notes about Battery Saver script
Can be used with kernels that have init.d support
It completely eliminates the need for an application to set CPU speeds or profiles
Easily customizable if you use a text editor(scripts located in /system/etc/init.d)
It will set Max CPU speed to 500MHz & Min CPU speed to 200MHz when a sleep
If SetCPU, Overclock Widget, Android Overclock or QuickClock Advanced Overclock are detected, the script is ignored, so it will not affect them
Preset profiles are:
1.2GHz - 100-85%
1.0GHz - 84-36%
800MHz - 35-0%
And just an FYI, even at 800MHz, the phone still operates very well & smooth but the battery saving are the real benefit

Does this mean that if I don't use Set CPU or any app that undervolt it, the phone will AUTOMATICALLY drop the CPU speed according to my battery level:
1.2GHz - 100-85%

Another word, it will automatically drop CPU speed to 800 MHZ when my battery level is 35-0% in order to save battery?
It won't "Drop" the CPU speed, it will lower the Maximum speed the CPU is allowed to ramp up to.

So if I am not doing CPU intensive stuff and just play simple games, email, web surfing phone call, then I am not going to see battery improvement since my CPU probably don't ramp past 800MHZ anyway when I am just doing simple stuff.?
Calk's ROM undervolts the CPU at all speeds so that in itself should help a little with battery life. But you are correct, if you are not doing CPU intensive tasks the CPU probably isn't spending much time at the higher speeds.
There is an app called CPUSpy which shows how much time the CPU has spent in each frequency state.
Your phone will ramp up to 1200 mhz more than you think. When it loads a webpage, it will ramp up to 1200, when it's loading your "simple" game, it will max out for a bit, etc.
It might not stay there for very long, but still. The nice thing about Calkuins rom is that even at 800 mhz, the phone is super smooth and lag free. In fact I just turn setcpu down to 800 all the time.

The way Calkulin's rom scripts are setup, setcpu gets reset on every reboot, even if you have it set to boot settings. The scripts installed will still take priority and the old rules apply, just to let you know. So you would have to set setcpu every boot for it to work, that or remove the scripts.

I havnt opened that rom, but Im gonna say the same applies, I remove those scripts, 2 will affect the cpu state.
edit, let me clarify, the scripts take prority, even if the app makes a script for init.d, the original script will take over on a reboot. So the script breaks tegrak, setcpu, and voltage control unless you set the app on every reboot.
I am running Calks 2 and desperado kernel. I notice when using setcpu, if you have it set on boot, it will override calks script.
His script does work well on saving battery life though. I ran oc'd while at 20% and still had 1700mhz blazing on performance gov.
I'd still use Calks script over setcpu or tegrak only due to the fact im too sporatic with my phone use to create optimal profiles to fit the way and when i need to use the device.

Actually in my own testing setcpu will not override the scripts, the slider may stay the same, but trust me, it goes back to 800 (or 1200 over 86%batt), Ive tested it several times. If you want proof Ill tell you how to figure it out. I know Im not respected yet, but I am someone that is known under another name that is highly respected, so, take it as you will.

Era, what's your suggestion for keeping the battery saving scripts running and getting a 1500 ish over clock when needed... something that can do both without having to physically change setcpu everytime. I basically want to permanently over clock to 1.5 and still save as much battery as possible when i have the screen off or it is charging. Idk if setcpu profiles work on this phone because i know they did not work correctly on the galaxy s. And one final question... what voltages do u run at what speeds on the "desperado" kernel to undervolt efficiently?

ERA. I wasn't looking to say that you were wrong in any way shape or form. I would be interested to know how you seen this as I am still in the beginning phases of learning the android system. I do plan on writing my own kernal/roms but I was actually sharing what my logical thought process would have been given the apps and system info I had avail.
I have a little ways to go in understanding the structure and FS of droid. Time is everyones enemy. Thanks for the correction again!

I'm currently running Calkulin's rom v2.5, and even at 41% battery I notice the cpu still hits 1.2 Ghz. Is his script activated by default or am I overlooking something? I also have nothing like setcpu installed.

So i just flashed the new 'code name droid' ROM and its sweet but it also comes with a overclocked kernel up to 1350 mhz and the ability to under-volt. I've heard under-volting can save on battery so i want to try it out!
SO my first question is , what are the pros and cons of playing with voltage?
second, is the amount i can change the voltage determined by each individual kernal? if so what about this one?
AND THIRD what should i under-volt my phone to and why?
also if anyone wants to share what they have volted their phone at please share!

The worst thing that could happen is that your phone will not boot. Then you have to reflash. Just decrease the voltage carefully. If you notice instability, you undervolted too much.

You need as well an app called Stabilty Test

Yes it is possible to take bigger steps. At least in the beginning in the end you have to do it step by step to test it properly.
Important: Do not select the "set on boot" option.
4. Go to the Stability test app and run the Classic Stability Test for a couple of minutes.
I always make at minimum 3 CPU runs.
5. Now go back to your CPU control app. And lower the voltage one step more.
6. Repeat step 4 and 5 until the phone crashes and reboots. Now go back to the voltage tab and raise the voltage by one step.
This is now your lowest "stable" voltage for 350Mhz.
7. Repeat step 2-6 with the other frequencies. When you're finished lock your frequencies how you like them or how the were before.
I recommend you to run now the Scaling Stabilit Test for a couple of minutes. Just to be sure. Now you undervolted your CPU.
IMPORTANT: As long as you're testing you voltages, NEVER, select the "set on boot" option.
If one of your voltages is to low you can end up in endless bootloops.
I don't even select it afterwards until I'm sure they're working fine. Real world usage differs from testing.
So it can happen that your phone suddenly reboots even after the testing.
It this case I recommend you to raise all voltage on step.
If you think you found a bug in the kernel and you're undervolted.
DO NOT REPORT IT. Revert back to the stock voltages, reboot and test if the bug appears again.

1. It could cause some instabilities but hey you're flashing custom recoveries so that shouldn't bother you too much.
2. Some kernel are setting a minimal voltage it's like the deepest possible voltage. I don't know if any kernel for the GNEX is having this function.
3. No body can help you with your values since every phone is different. Maybe yours is very good so you can go deeper the most of us.

First you need a kernel that supports overclocking.
If you using a stock Rom then look for the kernel that matches your Android version eg. 2.3.3 or 2.3.5 you will find them in the development section posted by Jikantaru
If you install a custom Rom then it will most likely have an overclockable kernel baked in.
To change clock settings I recommend 'no frills CPU' search it in the market or you could use set CPU.
Once you install one of the above apps then change the min and max sliders to the desired frequency.

You will definitely get better performance and it shouldn't cause you any problems.
Use no frills CPU I find its better than set CPU, when restarting your phone set CPU doesn't keep your overclock settings even though its set on boot.
As for the govonor settings I would choose smartass2 and noop for the scheduler.
I would keep the minimum frequency on 245MHz it can go lower but it could cause some issues (lag and slow unlocking and waking)
Note: not all cpu's are capable of running at the same speed, I'm lucky mine can run at 806MHz but some people have issues.
If you notice any problems like freezing etc, then drop the speed to a lower frequency until you find the sweet spot for your CPU.

Should be fine mate.
But remember if in the very unlikely event something does go wrong I wont be held responsible.
youll have to need an overclock kernel for that. (and a rom which supports one)
go for dust kernel or cake kernel! These two are well known for high end kernels!

Is Redmi note 8 pro locked at 2 GHz normal?

i've been using this phone for about 2 years now and recently moved (about a few months ago) to using a custom rom (crdroid 7.1.2). it was running smooth and cool until day the clockspeed decided to lock itself at 2000 MHz (checked using cpu-z). I do not know if this is normal but the phone's temperature goes up to 36C on idle. i thought the problem was with the Lspeed app (+custom kernel) so i uninstalled it but it didn't work. I also factory resetting it, but still not luck. will updating the firmware resolve my issue? if not, what other available solutions are there?

I have, but it still gets hot
do you use a case ? does your phone goes over 45 degrees celsius when charging ?

I do use a case, but hasn't been this hot before recently, and it does tend to hit 40C when charging

If you are using Fast Charging, that heating is entirely normal (happens to me too)
But heating during idle is not normal. Try changing CPU governor to something else. (like schedutil or powersave)

Do you know how to change cpu governor? I tried doing it last night but didn't find a whole lot of information. Schedutil seems to just set it all the way to 2ghz, so I want to change it to powersave

use Rootify, select the CPU tab located at the top then change it.
The app sometimes gets stuck at Loading screen though.

ok so it does work when i change the cpu govenor, but the only option that actually works is 'powersave' (as well as 'userspace'). all the other ones still sets it to 2GHz. 'userspace' seems to have a somewhat of an improvement but it's only setting everything to a constant value. is there a way have it set to balanced mode?

powersave forces the processor to work in the lowest frequency availible, thus consuming less power.
userspace allows the app to set the CPU frequency whatever it wants. This isn't supposed to be used in Android since changing CPU speed thorough an app is super uncommon.
Others like ondemand normally keep the power low but starts using the higher frequencies if a processor intensive app is launched.
You can learn which governors do what in this post so you can set the most suitable one for you.
