On 2.3.3 xLoud done a good job of making it louder but on 2.3.4 it makes it quieter. Is there a way of fixing this?

Try acid mod on it.

Best just to download the "bass booster " app on the play store
Beats Audio is all hype.
You have to delete the DSP manager first then flash the ac!d audio mod and then beats audio
