If I reactivate a non-4G phone. But not feature phone would I get unlimited data taken away?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
i assume you're on verizon since you mentioned 4g.
if thats the case, they should not remove your unlimited data IF you active a 3g smartphone.
If you go 4G to 3G or 3G to 4G, no change. 4G/3G to dumb phone will however.
Note going down to 3G then back up will require a new SIM card. (From my personal experiences, please chime in on differences).

You should be fine activating a 3g smartphone. If you had the double data promotion you would lose it by going to a 3g phone.

Hey I'm thinking about switching to straight talk(atnt) from my current 5gb/100mins $30 t mobile monthly 4g plan.
The reason is because T-Mobile is very slow in my area of Brooklyn and I want to know if anyone can tell me their data speeds in Brooklyn. I have a T-Mobile galaxy s3 which is unlocked.
Thanks

I would find out first if it is even possible to run 4Gfrom a T Mobile phone on the AT&T network. The reason i say this i know they have been unable to even get a connection to 3g to work on AT&T SG3's on the T Mobile network. There is a bounty thread on this here, which the last time i read into it was thought to not even be possible. That would make me wonder if what you are thinking of doing is feasible.
I've been reading around. The T-Mobile galaxy s3 supports atnt hspa+ network. But the atnt version doesn't support the T-Mobile hspa+ network because it runs on a different frequency.

I have an unlocked Galaxy S3 with Straight Talk (AT&T) in Manhattan.. The speeds are downright despicable!! I never get more than 2mb down and 1 up... I just bounce off of remembered wifi's all day with Juice Defender..
how do you guys turn off 4g
Both the battery working so good and long I would ask you this:
Why?

4G and 3G are not actually different for Tmobile.
Wikipedia article on Evolved HSPA
So then, the question is how to turn off DC hspa. Which is probably not accessible through the maintenance menus.
But for many real world value metrics I don't know what you would gain.
Get the app called phone info

I think there's an app for that. I forgot what its called but I think the toggles are Edge or HSPA+ umts only

I'm wondering if the OP came from Sprint? Sprint's 4G was a separate (battery sucking) radio that you could turn on and off and needed to in order to protect the battery usage.
4g on TMo isn't like LTE, it's not a separate modem to turn off like AT&T, VZW, or sprint. It's really a hopped up version of 3G. Your choices are 3G/4G or Edge.

On T-Mobile, there is no real differentiation between 3G and 4G. Both operate on the same spectrum. The only difference is the speeds. However, that is controlled, not by your phone, but by the tower you're connected to. It's easier to look at it as the same exact technology. For the purpose of this conversation, there is no more T-Mobile 3G. It's all 4G, or HSPA+, service now. The 3G brand has been retired in favor of the 4G moniker.
To put it all simply, 3G is the same as 4G on T-Mobile. To turn off 4G, you would drop down to 2G, or EDGE/GPRS, service.

And if you still want to do it.....go to settings - more settings - mobile networks - network mode and you can select "GSM only".
Strangely enough....there are a couple areas around where i live that my phone will show a 4G connection and absolutely refuses to open anything. I've found that if i switch to the "GSM only" option in those areas that at least i can get it working... slowly, but better than nothing.
Had the same issue with my previous phone. (G2) weird phantom 4G zone. :-/

Hello,
I have been around for a while, since my htc hero. And I've trusted xda to fix the many issues that manufacturers leave in. However the are a few issues with my new Galaxy S III that are driving me mad and if I can't fix them I may have to return it.
So far my speed is terrible. My 3g speed is half that of my wife's Epic touch. My 4g speeds are fine but will randomly switch to 3g (and with lte there is no refresh button like wimax, so I have to use airplane mode). And 4g is slower than 3g when I try to download from the play store but fine in the browser.
If anyone can help that would be great. I can't search all that well from the app and I am on stock tw 4.1 just rooted. I already fix all of the prl updates and stuff.
Also sometimes a green checkmark appears in my notification bar and says preparing network.
Other than this annoying network issue I really like this phone. I would hate to have to return it for the lg optimus G

I had that same problem....I was averaging .8-1.3mbps. Its not the phone its the location your in. Finally sprint turned on lte tower 14 in roanoke tx. Data faster than home internet.

That's what I would think. But my wife's phone was working fine. I just returned it today. now Sprint still wants to charge me an activation fee. Sigh

Your wife's phone us on wimax yours is on lte. What you explained sounds like lte towers are being worked on and upgraded near you. Lack of signal going into and out I went through that for about 4 weeks then lte lite up perfectly after that.

Yes I know that. I was comparing their 3g service

If i could piggy back off this thread, I also have a tmo s4 on att network. Yesterday I was with a friend who was also on att and I noticed his phone at that time had 4g where the network bars were located, mine however read H+. It was then I realized that I have never seen the 4g symbol on my phone ever. Do I just not get 4g? Or does this ROM that I have on my phone (slim bean) either not have the files for 4g or maybe its originally a T-Mobile ROM so I'm not getting 4g I don't know. I do get LTE tho.

Ok this makes sense, thanks.
I had the same issues. If your previous phone that you used on AT&T was only 3G (I had an iPhone 4), your SIM card is only configured to receive and transmit 3G data. You will need to go on to wireless.att.net and order a new 4G SIM card, or go to a store and have them program one for you. This is assuming that you have already signed up for one of the new data plans, if not, they will likely not issue a SIM card capable of 4G and will probably hound you via email and SMS about using a 4G device on an old 3G data plan.
I just picked up an AIO sim card and activated it my T-Mobile note 2. I had to put the APN in but after that lte popped right up. I love t mobile and I'm going to continue to use them but I'm traveling more with my new job and edge isn't cutting it. So far I've only seen one area on aio's coverage map where I wouldn't get service where I may go occasionally. If this works out I'm gonna lower my T-Mobile plan down to the lowest plan until more towers are upgraded.

What is an AIO Sim and what does it do different from a regular Sim?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
AIO wireless is a prepaid service owned by at&t. It runs on at&t's native network. Its similar to go phone but data is throttled but unlimited. Their plans are on their website. So far today around Buffalo NY its been solid. I leave on a trip tonight so I'm gonna get to test the coverage/quality out more thoroughly.
