Advice: which Win7 phone? - Windows Phone 7 General

Hello,
I would like to try out a Win7 phone.
Reading the forum, it seems as if I should buy something used (eBay) and wait for a Win8 phone. I'm on AT&T 3G (USA).
To get the full/best experience of a Win7 phone, what would you recommended -- used, 3G, current OS, etc?
Thanks!!

Wait for nokia lumnia 900 and htc titan II.

Both phones look excellent, but coming from Android, I'm concerned with upgrades. Do you think that these phones will be quickly upgraded to the new Win phone OS?

Probably any 2012 windows phone will get the os upgrade to Apollo(aka windows phone 8) and there is a great chance that gen 1 phones will also get the upgrade.

So far, so the implementation schedule of windows phone has been accomplished by MS, without problems. Nothing indicates that it can't continue well into the future, and also updates. In my opinion, WP7 is a good bet.

Thanks, @lomax50. What would you recommended to test WP7, wait for Titan II (pretty expensive!) or look for something used. If used, which phone(s)?

Yes. Unlike android Microsoft products use the same hardware so upgrades are pushed together. There is no need to specifically code each phone nor is there a skin and carrier bloatware on top.

I'd say get a 2nd gen phone and stay 1 gen behind so you don't have to pay out the wazoo....DO NOT buy a carrier locked/subsidy phone! You will always be at their mercy for updates.

Lumnia 900 is supposed to be $99 on contract. You'd be a fool to pay $600 for it via aftermarket.

Not necessarily true. Carrier subsidies are more than recovered in high-priced data plans and what not.
It's in my better interest to pay for an unbranded phone, as getting the same model on contract will cost me at least $30 more a month and I'd lose my unlimited data.

The new processors must enhance the experience a lot ... But, I like an unlocked phone, aside from the cost
I'm glad to hear that the updates get pushed to all phones. I'm on Google's last flagship phone, which has yet to receive ICS. Go figure!

Very soon. April 8th is the likely candidate.

you shouldn't cannibalize the backbutton

I was in the same boat.
I got a HTC Radar very cheap ($100 Sim Unlocked) to see if I liked Mango or not.
I think I do (i'll like it more once WindowBreak works for more models)
Now I'm looking at getting the HTC Titan as I want a bigger screen.
For me the Titan II isn't worth it as its primary differances are the camera and the LTE speeds.
Over here we don't have LTE yet and I'm not massively interested in the Camera.
The Lumia 900 looks good, but I am worried it'll be like the 800. the bezel around the screen is far too big on the 800 and it looks the same on the 900
the Titan has a nice small are around the screen and no sharp edges
the titan gets my vote.

Aside from a few differences with hardware 1st Gen phones I think are the way to go. Really depends on what you want to do with it. Apparently chevron labs is sold out of tokens so developer unlocking would be a little more difficult for 2nd Gen phones(HTC as least)
I still use my hd7 and love it. Nokia 900 looks like a super nice phone but I can't dev unlock it without a hassle. Never mind interop and full unlock.
Used HD7 IMHO.

Hi, Sorry to kinda hi-jack but doesn't warrant a new thread
Would 2.5GB be enough space for apps if I was to get the ZTE Tania, or would the HD7 be the better choice? I'm after a 4.3" screen for £200-250

Nokia 900 still alive!!!!

http://wmpoweruser.com/is-the-nokia-ace-showing-up-at-a-design-museum/ here is a link to the leak of possibly the nokia 900, i believe it will come early 2012 in the US
Thats just an artist render, but yes the US will be getting a device in early 2012. January is supposedly going to be their announcement, and from what I've [heard], its a Lumia 800 type device (awesome) with possibly a larger screen and more features. This could mean a FFC and other things, but we'll just have to wait and see

doesn't even have to have a bigger screen to me, just give me a lumia with a FFC and you'll have the first mobile device that I've ever cared to use for a full year. My DVP is being replaced at 11 months some time this week by the lumia 800.

You are right, they have that moronic Apple Logo.
The N9 does not have the back, windows & search keys so it would be better to get the Windows Phone device. So its up to you if thats really that important.
I wouldn't bother with it without a larger screen. 4" is minimum for me.

Same here, but honestly if they keep the 3.7" screen, but up the storage to 32 and put in a FFC I would still highly consider going down a little on screen size.
I'll have it Thursday. I'm a bit nervous about the tiny screen. Haven't had a screen that small as a daily driver since the g1 (yes I know it was 3.5) fortunately the keyboard is intuitive enough that it's a non-issue.

There's no need for concern, there will be a 900 series WP7 device. But give them a break - they just shipped their current flagship, the N9, to stores in October. Surely it deserves to be king of the hill for at least a few months.

Nothing new for this year.
Too bad whatever phone they do get will be crippled by the extremely slow network. Its soo terrible trying to do anything on it before 2am. I'm cancelling my contract with them this week and going to t-mobile. I've had enough.

Yeah, I'd disagree with that... T-Mobile has been waaaaay better in regards to Sprint in my area at least. I tether my Sprint iPhone to my T-Mobile Android phone when I want good speeds, lol!
http://www.sprintfeed.com/2011/12/r...t-three-windows-phones-in-first-half-of-2012/
This is the only rumor I know saying sprint will get new windows phone.
Sprint is so busy trying to hang from the ball sack of the iPhone; for some reason they went the route of Verizon with promoting their Android phones and now iPhone, like Verizon they only have one Windows Phone and don't promote it much. WTF is next? Sprint will start trying to ditch Windows Phone?
Tmobile may work good in your area. But where i olive its terrible and many other people in my area agree. But it has to be the worst cell phone provider in my area that I've experience.

Yeah I'm really hoping Sprint gets a new windows phone.Hopefully it wont just be one with 1GHZ Process(like the radar) and will be 1.4ghz or 1.5ghz.
I've been sitting on a upgrade since April of 2011. All I want is either a 4" plus Samsung or HTC phone and I will sign a new contract on the first day.
Somehow, I got got the itchy feeling that more than one new Windows Phones are coming to Sprint.
I would not sleep on the Arrive if you can pick one up for a good price like I did on EBay. I am one that started with the first iPhone when it came out and eventually made my to Android and swore by it ever since. I currently have the Motorola Photon 4G but was really interested in taking a Windows 7 phone for a spin so I picked up the Arrive. Man the Arrive is faster than my Photon. Now yes I do not get 4G with the Arrive but I can barely get 4G anyway. These Mango phones are awesome. It also came down to since someone brought up age that I really needed workwise to stop dicking around with gaming ability and the number of apps available (I can use my Asus TF for that ) and look at smartphone functionality. If your in business like myself the Windows phone is the way to go and the HTC Arrive is a damn good phone for now. You can find them off contract for great prices to get you by until the new hardware hits the street.
I love my Arrive so much that I picked up one for my girlfriend for a penny during the holiday sales and got a cheap used one from eBay with a bad ESN so my daughter could use it as an over-glorified Zune. With that being said, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade if a newer unit was released with a larger screen and more storage. I could care less about processor speed since WP7 seems to run equally well on all current hardware.

Yeah I also have the HTC Arrive(Got it in April) and love the phone so much. But I have a upgrade in March 2012 and really want a window phone with more storage(I also use my htc arrive as a zune player and with only have about 6gb left).
I have the arrive as well, I love the phone other than a few bugs that it has.
I really want something thinner, with a bigger screen and no keyboard. The on screen keyboard works great.

Not sure what to buy, Nokia Lumia 900 or Focus S?

Morning peeps,
desperately need a new phone and not sure what to get from the two Lumia 900 or Focus S!!??
Know the specs for both of these phones but struggling to decide. What would you go for and why?
ta
go with Nokia
HTC Titan
Titan's screen is not as good...
Go for the 900.
Nokia care about their users and are implementing fixes for bugs when needed.
And besides I'm sure I read that Samsung are dis-continuing the Focus S anyway... Yeh From WPCentral.
"Oh and before we close out, we're also told that the HTC TITAN and Samsung Focus S are to be put on the End of Life (EOL) list, meaning their future availability will be phased out from current inventory without being replenished. "
lumia 900 without a doubt.
Nokia =
better body design and build quality
better camera
Nokia has numerous applications that are much better than the other OEM's (drive, transport ect)
and most important, Nokia is ALL IN with windows phone. They will make sure people are happy. Updates, firmware fixes, if you buy Nokia you know you will have good support for the life of the phone.
how well would the Lumia screen compete with the focus S?

They are both excellent screens. The nokia CBD on the Lumia 900 is stunning. Works great in bright situations also. I'd say overall they are a wash, so it comes down to the rest of the design, hardware, services & support.

NO WP7's to get WP8

And people thought Android's fragmented upgrades to ICS were bad... I'm amazed that they can do this, especially with the leaps and bounds they've made with the Lumia 900 and such. That would be like not updating the HOX to jellybean if it were to come out in the coming months. Even apps aren't going to be backwards compatible with WP8.

Am I the only one not surprised at all? That's why I wouldn't have signed a contract for a WP device, not even with a gun at my head. I'm still picking a WP8 device this fall tho, the ecosystem starts looking good and I'm still in love with the platform. I'd see no point moving to Android anyway, for my kind of usage WP7.8 would still be better than ICS or iOS anyway.

The problem in the USA is even if your contract is up unless you switch to a pay monthly plan your bill stays the same. So it doesn't make sense to wait a year to do an upgrade. I upgraded months ago. By the time Windows Phone 8 devices are available for free (cost of Lumia 900 on contract) I will be half way done with my contract. I just couldn't sit around for 8 months paying my monthly bill and not working off contract time. In that scenario you can't turn down a free phone. Can you?
Well now Nokia won't sell any Phones at all. Well done Microsoft, i'll wait for 7.8 and maybe get rid of my Lumia 800.

It's a sleazy move if M$ is devaluing NOK to buy it for pennies soon. They (M$) are alienating even more potential customers just to pick up NOK and it's lock box of patents and hardware know-how.
NOK- "Here, buy our awesome phone, running windows only now!"
customer - "Will it update ?"
NOK - "Hell yes, M$ promised complete control over updates, not carriers or even us!"
customer - "Hey, uhhhhhmmmm"
I failed to see how M$ will regain the mobile market share after this, the ship has sailed for them. Sacking all your loyal customers not only once but twice has never been a good idea. Good luck racing with RIM for the bottom prize M$.
I dunno, my HD7 was just a recycled HD2 running WP7...I'm ready for a front camera facing, HD screened quad band phone . (1st and 2nd generation phones will get 7.8, but that doesn't matter in this thread lol)

My phones value is falling as fast as NOK Stock

Just checked ebay and the lumia 900's value is just around the same as a Samsung focus, lol. I was looking to unload this one come the fall for a WP8 but it seems that I will have to keep it as my backup phone. Well, I found a useful way of killing time while I wait for WP8 to come around, Ive been engraving on the back of this bad boy. The polycarbonate is great for engraving. Got a nice superman logo done as well as a windows 8 logo. I'll post some pics when I clean the whole thing up.
Dude, all cell-phones values are declining after a short while - those who are patient can buy a cell-phone in a price up to 50% lower than the phone's original launching price, I bet I'm not telling you anything new...
Actually most high-end phones hold resell value very well. I sold my used titan for $350, a used focus after 6 months $400, and a used HD7 for $300. The lumia after two months? You can snag one on eBay for about $200. Yeah all phones depreciate in value. It just so happens that with their announcement about only getting 7.8 made it quicker. I've had 5 window phones and I love the platform but Microsoft sucks when it comes to marketing and revealing products. Why do you think apple announces their new phones only a few weeks before they sell them? Because they don't want their older models to take a huge hit on sales. Oh well, early adopters always get screwed.

Yeah check out the Rogers ones or the European ones and see how much they are.
I bought my lumia on craiglist for $300.00 and i though it was a good deal it was in brand new condition, I have been trying to sell it for $200.00 for the past week and no one wants it.
It is funny that anyone who mentioned demand and value would drop after the WP8 announcement were called babies and ridiculed. Many talked about how it didnt matter to the masses and how they would sell the device for a decent price when WP8 came out. Maybe its just a coincidence the demand dropped? Lol

That's ridiculous - of course the Lumia 900's value would drop after the WP8 announcement (it didn't drop THAT much, though - from 700$ for an unlocked device on eBay it dropped to 550$), as the Galaxy S2 price dropped when the S3 was announced...
Point is that they won't start giving those Lumia 900s for free - their price dropped, thats for sure - but they won't become obsolete.
Well Nokia/AT&T paid me $1 for my L900 ($99 - $100 = $1-) so I have no complaints. When I get itch for a new WP8 next Spring I will apply the $199 I should have paid for this phone, another $199 for the phone, plus another $100 for my backup Surround, w/accessories when I sell it (just got over $100 for my Tilt2). $500 should get me a nice phone. And another upgrade in Jan 2014.

happens all the time. look at iphones they also lost value not as bad as nokia but from what I've seen now 4s going rate is around $350-400 for 16gb model. Unlocked ones go for more. Happens all the time. Also one thing I noticed from iphones is that its better to keep the phone a bit longer and let the dust settle down when new phone comes out. Usually first week upgraders are lucky to snag new iphone and keep driving prices of previous version down in order to dump them fast. After a while it actually levels off and with release of unlock and jailbreak value goes up a bit.
Once ATT releases unlock codes for lumia 900s they will go up a price a bit as that opens up a different market. But overall all phones drop in price as time passes. early adapters move on to the next phones etc.
I'd be all over a Lumia 900 if the AT&T models could be unlocked, though all the unlocked ones are kind of over priced.
