There really isn't a way that I know of. The sms/mms is stored in an sqlite database (on stock ICS at least, should be the same for gingerbread or earlier.
Check the backup directory for datadata.tgz and extract it and find /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/database. In that folder is a mmssms.db file that has the sms/mms messages.
It's an sqlite database so I doubt you can open it with a text editor. Nope, you can't.

[Q] Restoring SMS

Hey I need a little help.
I need to restore the mmssms.db file onto my phone after wiping it. I tried putting it back in its place using adb push but the phone won't pull up the old messages. Could someone help me out with this? The rom i am using is the Cyanogen mod 6.1 rc2 on the incredible.
Did you just change roms and trying to restore old texts? Did you back up old one?

yes i have the original mmssms.db file and after switching to the cyanogen mod i pushed the file back on. However, when i go to read my messages there are no messages, but the file in there is the old mmssms.db file. Also I completely backed up my old rom in case i need to revert
Restore old Rom. Download sms mms back up and restore from market. Make a back up. Restore new Rom and download app again, open and restore all messages

Well i was hoping i could figure out more about why that file works the way it does. That will do the trick for sure though.

Original .db file is always wiped clean on factory data reset that you had to do to flash new rom. As the poster above me said, use sms restore app

Of course the .db file is wiped. That's why he said that the pushed the old file with all this messages back onto the phone after flashing.
@SerenadeX: Did you reboot after pushing the file back?
Yeah i tried that but there was no change in my messages. There was, however a change in my search. I could search for terms that were in my messages but they would not pull up on the message in box. For example if i started typing the word fish the suggestion would come up for fish and when i search it it would come up with no results but the suggestions were so specific even to names. Its weird.
Your old .db file, is that from the stock (Sense) ROM?
yes it is.
That's probably what the problem is then. My gut says that the DB schemas between the stock ROM and CM are different. That would explain why just copying the .db file from one to the other doesn't work.
You'll need a program that will export the DB and re-import it correctly. There's quite a few SMS backup/restore apps in the market, many free. I haven't found anything free that will both backup and restore MMS messages though, so if you have any of those that you really want to keep you'll need to either buy something or go without those.

[Q] messaging

Hey guys. So I was in terminal deleting the stock apps that I don't need to have and one of those apps which I deleted was the stock messaging app, I did this because I was using hancent. Well now I am not receiving any pictures.
- It all started after I deleted the stock app, I am not sure if it started immediately after or a while after
- I was using handcent and I noticed that I was getting the pop up received thing and the quick reply option but in the actual handcent app under each conversation the incoming message was not there.
Are there any suggestions to fix this or knowledge about this topic? Do you need to have the stock messaging app in order to have other messaging apps work? I can send pictures and texts; i can receive texts but not pictures...
You need the stock app. The 3rd party apps just piggyback off it.

I tried that and it didnt work...Not giving me the option to restore....
Did you make a backup? Or just reflash the Rom.

eveything I removed i backed up first through titanium back.. I see a little blue check next to it and it says data only..Not giving me a option to restore it..
Like I said before, just reflash the Rom you're using and start over. Nandroid is your friend

or manually push it. if you tell me what rom you're running, i'll make you a flashable zip. also, did you delete the messaging.providers.apk or the messaging.apk?
nvm i can just make a zip with both.
Hope you got it fixed. That's hard one to pick which forum it goes in lol either here or the Q/A.
I am using the stock rom. I just wanted root which I used unrevoked 3 to give me root. I removed messages 1.00 and messages wiget 2.2. I removed them with titanium backup. Thanks..
here you go dude. stock mms apk pushed to system/app by this zip.
I found the stock app and installed it...It worked...thanks

[Q] help with getting data after flashing a rom

Im a beginner to flashing roms. Started to root my galaxy s3 and was a success the first time around. After I backup my apps and datas, contacts etcs with titaniumbackup free version. Then I flashed the CM10 everything went smooth. Successfully restoring my apps but I cannot restore my data such as, contacts, texts msg, email accounts other than gmail. Anyone know the reason why this is happening or maybe use a different backup app? Any tips, suggestions would be helpful.
As of right now back to Tmobile stock-rooted jb 4.1
I recommend MyBackup Pro to do app and data backups - allows me to restore my data with the app.

glad this wasnt an IMEI issue lol, hope you find a solution
Restore the data from "contacts storage". Go to backup/restore find it in the list and tap it. Hit restore, data only.
For texts I use SMS backup & restore. TB didn't seem to work well.
Titanium Backup doesn't backup your SMS automatically. Go into Titanium Backup, press menu, and then hit backup data to XML. This will allow you to backup your call log, SMS/MMS, Bookmarks, and even your Wifi Access points.

[Q] restore messages from backup.

Hey guys just had a question. I just flashed over a new rom and completely forgot to backup my texts and i had some unsaved numbers in my previous rom..my question is there anyway to go into the backup and pull out some file that has all my messages so i can restore them on my current rom?

The only way I would know how, would be to download a third-party SMS app. From there, can you do use titanium to restore it or use it's own backup and restore features through that app. After that, use that on your new ROM and those messages should come back to the stock SMS application... Maybe. I mean "maybe" to the messages going back to the stock SMS app.

Within the menu in the paid version of TitaniumBackup, not sure about free version, is a "restore from nandroid backup" feature that allows you to restore specific app data from a backup location. The app will check your backup to see what is available to restore and give you the option to select which app or data or both you wish to restore. I've used it before and it worked. Good luck

I always backup my contacts and texts in Kies, you can always just restore them back to your device even if its rooted. Just did that to mine last night. Hope this helped.

I use sms backup. It works great. You can backup to internal sd or sd card. Very simple app, but it does the job. I've never restored sms messages with Titanium Backup, just my user apps.

Accidentally wiped phone with recovery file under emulated SD card instead of actual

Oh boy, i did it now.
I made a backup of my sms and mms messages that i really need to recovery. My problem was that i was paying attention to which sd card it was on....i thought i had selected the actual SD card, but it turns out i was using the phone's internal SD.
I performed a factory reset and applied a much smaller rom, going from stock touchwiz 4.2.x to the 4.4.2 Google Play edition of KitKat. I feel that the file is still recoverable as the data area hasn't been overwritten, and it is very very important for me to get the messages back.
I have tried to install an app that enabled USB Mass Storage to let me use standard windows recovery methods to try to pull out the file, but i can't get it to be seen properly. I come to you guys for any assist:
Is there a way, through the ADB or otherwise, to recover a section of file and attempt to carve out the proper file from it? it was just a single zip file created, about 20-30mb in size.
thank you in advance!
By any chance could you have had a Gmail account set to auto backup your messages?

Aloha, and thanks for the response:
Nope, otherwise this probably wouldn't be as big of an issue.
Ok just checking lol

Anyone have anything? i could really use the assist here.
Look up any Unix/Linux commands to run in a terminal. You will prolly need to be rooted to execute them. And Google for your issue. I remember seeing a thread where someone was able to get their pics back after deletion.
