I'd like to uninstall a ROM (or is it just re-flashing stock?) so that I can do the normal update process to EL30 from EI22, and then apply a different ROM later.
What's the best method of doing this? I was able to apply the ROM without losing data, so getting back to stock should preserve it as well I hope. Pretty sure that on top of reverting to stock image I'll have to drop CWM but I'm cool with that. Just not sure of which steps to take to get from point A to point B.
TIA
Easiest way to get back to stock EL30 would be to flash the EL30 tar with Odin. You would however lose your data if it wasn't backed up first.
Go to Development section and in the stickies click the Roll Up sticky thread. Click on How to restore a semi-bricked Epic. Follow the first post exactly to install the latest Sprint firmware EL30. Make sure to backup first with Titanium Backup if you plan on rooting and restoring apps and data.

From looking at threads on other devices I'm guessing the answer is yes, but I'm trying to confirm... right now I'm running rooted 2.2.1 stock. If I want to get OTA Gingerbread when it's released, I need to remove CWM Recovery, yes?
What do people recommend for doing that? Odin/Heimdall back to stock?

Yes, some have gotten the OTA to download rooted but would not install. So if you want the OTA whenever it finally goes out you will need to be full stock EC05 with no missing stock apps.
Personally I'm planning to restart and Odin a full ROM when it becomes available. I installed Froyo EC05 over the original Eclair ROM, and another upgrade would be I think a messy scenario, if it's even possible. It'll be my Odin 'virginity' (eww) so I hope it doesn't, uh, hurt too much, nuhmean? XD

That's a good point. If I'm going to be blowing away all my data with an Odin, it doesn't make a lot of sense to Odin Froyo and then OTA Gingerbread, I should just Odin (or Heimdall) Gingerbread directly.

If it's available, sure. However doing it the way you describe probably wouldn't be problematic. The reason is you're still starting over fresh. It's kind of like doing an upgrade to Windows 7 by installing a brand new Vista first, as opposed to starting with XP, then overwriting with Vista, then using it for a few years and then installing 7 on top of it. Superficially it may go OK but deep down there may be a lot of muck and future malfunctions packed in.
But our community should hopefully be able to get us complete Odinable 2.3 ROMs, maybe even full stock, so that's even better.
No you don't have to start fresh. You can Advance restore data from a Nand backup on GB and have all your data, apps and homescreens.

I believe we're discussing installation procedures. Data restoration is a seperate issue. There are many ways to do that.
Just a quick question... My epic is rooted and i got the EI22 ota notice today. if I attempt to accept the ota update what will happen? Currently running 2.2.1 Froyo DK28. Thanks!
I personally would unroot first. Never take an OTA update on a rooted phone. Best case you lose root, worst case, bricked device. Not worth the risk, at least for me.
Unrooting and rerooting is easy enough. Do you have a custom ROM installed? If so the OTA update likely would fail anyway.

Can you please elaborate? What is the procedure?
You are rooted, do you have Clockwork Mod installed? If so you can just grab the factory image from here when it shows up - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SPH-D700-Official_Roms
Probably worth buying Titanium backup from the market to backup your apps and data first, then you could even just Odin the new version if you had to and restore.

go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337222
this is instructions from OP
- download system dump file
- unzip the whole folder to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ (assuming you have CWM)
- if you are on EXT4, install the gotorfs.zip through CWM first
- and from CWM, do a Back Up/Restore, and select restore
from there do a restore.
** this will wipe off everything. so make TB for apps and Go SMS for sms backup which I did.
EDIT:
if you want EI22 modem:
- Odin modem to EC05
- and flash the zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339401) through CWM
*** make sure you Odin EC05 before flashing EI22 modem. otherwise, it won't work.
enjoy
Hi i currently have stock rom but have it rooted. Can someone provide me with a link to update my phone to the new update w/root or let me know what I need to do? Thanks!
Also I am not sure if I am running ext or rfs can some tell me how to figure that out?
A great place to start learning about modding the Epic are the QBKing77 videos on youtube. Just search for them or check out the links to his videos in most of the OPs in the development section. There are a ton of custom roms to play with right now, as well as the stock EI22 Gingerbread rom that came out OTA.
Thanks as I said though I am already rooted but unsure if its ext 4 or RFS I need help figuring that out and then I think I can just odin it from their.
I wish to stay on stock.
Might I suggest taking a look at the MostlyStockROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339579
You can even go to the "old links" and choose to download the deodexed only first release which is Stock + doedexed + root. Or choose one of the newer releases which has the fixes/features you want.
If you want EI22 Fully Stock then I believe you will need to unroot your existing install and install the OWA. I haven't seen a stock ODIN method but may have missed it.
I see. How do I unroot my phone?
odin back to stock ec05.
ok so then how do I root my phone after going back to stock updating then what?
Or couldn't I just do a factory reset then update?

Once you odin back to stock ec05, it'll do the OTA update onto ei22. That's how I did my phone. Warning, once you odin back, you'll lose all your app and data.
I'm not worried about that I have titanium back up pro. their has got to be a easier way to do this though. Before All I had to do was Odin to the next update and that was it (eco5) now I have to odin back to stock remove root then update and then reroot...... thats a lot of work.
Is their a way to do this without un-rooting my phone?
Also can someone shoot me a link to a tutorial on going back to stock?
Also once root is removed I take it I would have to re root it. (this is ridiculous un root, update, reroot)
So what DO i do to re-root it?

you can just download the file and install it using CWM but i'm 0 for 2 with this method.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB956i_KEp4
Follow the video that babystewie posted. I've used it twice, both succeeding with no issues what so ever. It will allow you to update to GB with root, but will give you a stock version of GB. If you're interested in rooting GB as well, check the video description and there's some more videos.
There are a lot of mostly stock roms or even just a cwm flashable ei22 in the development section. You'll keep root and won't have to go through using odin so many times.
what do you mean a stock version of gingerbread? also I already have clockwork if that helps does it mean i have ti do anything different if i want to keep root?
There really is no completely stock Gingerbread ROMs because we don't have the tar file for the Odin flash. There are several ROMs in the Development thread (where the ROMs are) that are mostly stock. You can simply flash one of those, and if you want the EI22 modem, you can flash the EC05 to EI22 modem updater found in the stickies in development. I recommend you start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337453
Ok, so nothing has been posted about this for a while, from what I can tell, but I wanted to see what the best method is to return my phone to stock for repair. I have EI22 "Mostly stock" rom w/ EI22 modem, Nubecoder kernel and CWM. I want this back to stock 2.3 w/ all of the regular EI22 crap, and the threads I've read are about getting it back to EC05 stock. I'm not sure if I should follow the ReRFS method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904
Then doing OTA to 2.3.. OR just flash the Heimdall EI22 package here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353310
Has anyone performed either of these on EI22 that could share?
Thanks!
Go with the second method with Heimdall. The first will still have you rooted with CWM recovery. You would need additional steps to unroot and try to get the OTA which may fail.

Odin back to ec05. Find the update.zip file which will bring you back to ei22. I wouldn't do ota. It takes forever and can get corrupted. If you can't find the ei22 zip let me know. I can upload it for you to download.

Since I cracked my screen, I wanted to return to stock before taking back for replacement. I followed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Then did OTA to EI22 Gingerbread. And everything worked fine for me. Never tested to see if CWM recovery was still there.
So my question is CWM still on my phone? And if so, is it going to be there after it is fixed?

Nope. Odining a stock tar replaces CWM with. Stock recovery. With the OTA you have to jump through hoops to get it back. It will require Odining CWM recovery in with reboot unchecked. Pulling and reinstalling battery and booting straight into CWM and then flashing a custom kernel. For Root you will need to flash su.zip as well. I prefer flashing a full ROM right away to get root.

Here's a link where you can find the EI22 Update.zip:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...read-epic-4g-official-gingerbread-thread.html
IMO, since you want to take it in for repair, odining EC05 is going to be your best bet. There won't be any traces of root left on your phone, with the exception of your SD card, which you should also copy and then get rid of. Some people think this is going too far, and the Sprint techs won't look at it, but whatever, if you're taking it in for repair, I would cover all my bases. To the extent of creating another Gmail account to sync up your phone with, so they don't see Titanium Backup and/or Root Explorer, etc as some of your paid for apps.
OTA or download the update.zip as mentioned to get to EI22. Once you get your phone back, I would odin again to EC05, skip the update and oneclick from there and flash whatever ROM you were on before, or flash the nandroid you made before odining from the same version of CWM you had before you started this whole thing.
Again, some may think it's overkill, and it might be, but at least you won't be called in to the store informed they won't fix your phone because some nosey sprint tech knows your phone was rooted.
Hello. I have seen a several different ways to go about un-rooting and ways to get the OTA. My question is, what is the best way to un-root and get 2.3.6? I am already rooted using bombaradier 3.5. I don't mean to make another thread about this again, but I am getting confused with all of the different postings and ways to go about this process. If someone could provide links to the most updated way to un-root and get 2.3.6, It would be a great birthday present for me. lol.
PS. I did get the OTA, but I froze it using Titanium. If that matters...
Thanks a Lot
Cleanest way is just to back up your apps with titanium backup, flash the stock rom, update, re-root, reinstall titanium and apps.
Or, just flash a new rom with update pre-installed and de-bloated.

I know of several users (including me) who just updated using Kies (and then rooted again via Odin). This is a no-wipe solution that requires re-root but old apps and data are preserved
My is rooted when i received the OTA update for 2.3.6. I did not unroot and let the update do their thing. After few minutes my SGS2 is 2.3.6 with working wifi calling. Note: Once you update you need to use the sim that came with the phone in order for wifi to work. Hope this helps.

Ummm, if you are using a custom ROM , trying to get the OTA could be very dangerous ... Better bet is just find an updated custom ROM and flash it ...
If you are going to go to stock, make sure you use Odin and not a "stock" rom. I was on Bombardier 3.5 and flashed Zedomax's stock rom with CWM, except the Synergy kernel stuck which caused a few problems. Then, I just flashed the 2.3.6 tar.md5 with Odin. Now everything is fine and I'm looking for a new ROM to flash.
