Camera Cracked Internally & Externally!

Hi,
I have an HTC Desire which is a little over a week old, though on Saturday I got my desire knocked out of my hand and took a fall onto gravel and the battery cover's camera lens cracked and now has a thick crack through the middle which is not much of a problem as it is easily replaceable, though the glass which covers the lens/sensor cracked into many pieces though I do not know if it is a filter of some sort or just some dust protector. (I can still use the camera without a problem).
Should I send it for repair to get the protector put in, or will I be ok just buying a new battery cover?

It's likely not just a filter of some sort, but an important part of the optical design. It could be replaceable, but normally replacing lens elements requires re-calibration of the entire lens itself. I doubt though, that they would replace just a part of the lens, they would likely swap the entire thing. I'm pretty sure HTC buy these lenses/modules already assembled and calibrated from someone who specializes in making such things.

Just for everyone benefit i also cracked the back cover plastic screen and also the glass screen on the camera as well. The back cover is easily replaceable by a new back cover off eBay for £12.99 or the lens piece itself for about a £5 i think, which is easy to find but i decided to replace the internal glass myself. I found this on eBay for £7.49:

Using an old sack pin i manage to remove the cracked glass, the trick is to prize up the black plastic the glass is stuck too, that way no shards fall off into the camera itself.
I thoroughly cleaned the camera and new glass with an anti-static wipe.
You have to push out gently the four plastic stripes round the camera that the glass fits into so the new glass fits it snuggly when you push it in.
I did make a hash of it to begin with and touched the back of the glass so it was smudged and got a bit of glue on it. I put an anti-static wipe on the needle end of the sack pin and cleaned it thoroughly and this did the trick. To test it though use barcode scanner as well as the camera app.
I haven't much patience and have large fingers, i guess you could take more time and use more precise tools to do a better job but as the camera isn't the most important function for me this was fine.
I did contact the HTC repair shop that was listed on XDA and this was there reply:

I guess if you have phone insurance that would be a better way to go but as i didn't i saved a few quid doing it myself, it only took 15 mins to do, not hard at all.

Broken Screen - Which part should i buy?

My GF broke the screen on her Droid Incredible, Verizon insurance wants $100 to replace it, so not sure it is worth it for this phone, and she has a few months left before her upgrade is ready. If i am going to try to fix it for her, can anyone with experience tell me what parts specifically I would need? The LCD seems fine, so i would think i can replace just the digitizer, which i can get on Amazon for $16

I am no expert, but it would seem that if anything under the glass was broken, you would need to replace the lcd (that is, if you could see the lcd "leaking" or being distorted)

Unfortunately I have had the pleasure of replacing my digitizer twice. You definitely wanna buy it WITH the frame or housing. The adhesive is like industrial strength and you will end up breaking the original anyways when trying to remove the digitizer from it. I have to warn you that doing this repair yourself will void your warranty. Make sure the digitizer you get comes with the tools required to get the phone apart. You can get this as a package on eBay fairly cheap too. There are about 3-4 circuit strips that will have to be removed from their clips, don't be intimidated by them, but be gentle. Your first time is gonna take you a while, just be patient. If you need to do it a second time, its gonna be a breeze. PM me if you have any concerns during your repair.

I had the same thing happen to me, it was a pain but there are a few videos on youtube
that should help you through it, though it doesn't sound like its that bad

Definitely go with the digitizer and housing replacement together. Bottom line, it will make your life so much less of a headache while replacing it.

I just replaced mine this weekend. I attached some before, during, and after pictures...

Personally, I went with just the glass/digitizer (your first link) and it went fine. The glass is difficult to get out of the housing, but it's not that bad. It probably took me 20 minutes to get the old glass out, maybe 5 minutes of cleaning goo from the old adhesive, and probably another 5 minutes to put the new glass back on.
Some Tips:
The pry tool that comes with it is very cheap. I would suggest using it sparingly until you get to the LCD panel extraction and glass removal. You want it to be as in good of condition as can be when you get to those later steps.
Use a blow-drier to heat up the adhesive, and get it to the point where you almost cant touch it. I used some yellow kitchen gloves so I could get it a little hotter and still be able to hold it. I used a combination of my hands and the pry tool and worked mostly along the sides and top first, then separated the bottom last.
The guy in the youtube videos uses glue, but you shouldn't need that. It comes with pre-cut adhesive strips, which work great. One word of caution though... The sheet that they come on is scored for you, but I suggest using an x-acto to cut them out. This is especially important for the thin rectangle that goes around the outside of the glass. You really don't want to pull on that... you don't want it to get stretched or twisted. Summary: the strips work great, just be careful extracting them from the sheet they come on, and placing them on the phone.
Don't forget to get the red earpiece grill off of the old glass before throwing it away. You'll need to super glue that back onto the housing, but it's really easy to see where it goes. This should be the only thing you need glue for.
When removing the glass, cleaning up gunk from the old adhesive, and applying new adhesive, be careful of the electronics at the bottom for your capacitive buttons... you definitely don't want to harm or obstruct those.
This should probably go without saying, but make sure not to touch the inside of the new glass, or the LCD panel. You don't want fingerprints or dust inside the phone. Even if you don't touch it, I would still give it a shot of compressed air right before putting it in, just to make sure there's no dust.
I would say that it's probably worth the extra $10-12 bucks to get it with the housing already included, but it's definitely not necessary if you want to save a little money. As I said above, it only took me about a half hour to get the old glass out and the new glass in, and from what it sounds like, there is still some effort involved even if you get it with the housing (moving the circuitry from the old one). I wouldn't worry about breaking the frame... it's pretty strong. If you break it, you're doing it wrong. Although, if your frame has some scrapes and other assorted road rash on it like mine does (see first picture), then maybe you might want a new one anyway. Another consideration... the reviews on Amazon for the one without the housing are much better, but that could just be because of people who don't know what they're doing... who knows.

[Q] How to repair a broken screen!?

Hi guys,
I have just broken my Dinc2's glass screen. The underlying LCD screen is still functional and the touch screen works. So, I am guessing that I only broke the glass on the top of the screen... I uploaded pics to make it clear.
The casing near the USB port got bent some time back when I went kayaking... And I think that is where the screen cracked significantly when I dropped the phone.
I can still use the touchscreen and there are no discoloration on the LCD. So, can you guys suggest to me what Screen replacement product I need to buy online and (preferably) give me a link for said product and a How to repair guide. Plus, is this process easy? As in if I spend a few hours carefully following the steps to repair, will I succeed?? Moreover, can I replace the metal casing as well?

So I have dust under my screen even though my phone is completely original and never been dropped. Do you think it's worth taking apart, cleaning out, and replacing the adhesive? How long do you think it would take, and what is the likelihood of doing more damage to the phone?

I actually just finished doing this a few hours ago. It does take some time to do it but if you have patience you can do it
You have to remove the LCD to remove the digitizer, so you will have all the parts out of the body of the phone. It is easier if you replace the body because it comes with new adhesive already perfectly cut and installed. If you reuse the old one you will have to scrape all the old adhesive off, then cut new adhesive. They are also available in red/silver/black so you can change colors.

That is what I was referring to as the body, since all the parts attach to it. I actually got an entire new housing, came with the bezel, the middle part, and a new battery cover since my battery cover was beat up and I was changing colors. The middle part I didn't need but it was cheaper to buy all 3 parts than just 2.
I got it on ebay. The Incredible 2 and the Incredible S housing parts are interchangeable. I ended up getting S parts because they were cheaper. Most of the ebay sellers are in China so shipping takes 1-2 weeks depending on the seller. Repairsuniverse is good if you want it fast, I ordered from them once and got the part in 2 days.

I wanted to know if there is a detailed how to. Anyway, managed to take it apart. All guides end at taking it apart and say, "well, now you know how to dissemble it, just go in reverse and assemble it. Well. I wish they don't do that and show me through the reverse just to avoid mistakes. I remember having to redo IKEA furniture due to missing a few parts. Don't wanna do this messy procedure and realize I forgot a button or worst still putting the screen on!
Anyway, I am a grad student with a bachelors in Engineering... I should be ashamed if I can't do this! :silly:

repairsuniverse has a guide on youtube for replacing the digitizer. I found it easy to follow. Only difference is when you put it back together put the parts in the new body. You will also have to pull the speaker out of the old body and put it in the new. It is held in by glue, heat it with a hairdryer/heatgun and it comes out pretty easily. You might need to use some new adhesive on the speaker, I was able to pull the old adhesive out of the body in one piece using a hairdryer and some tweezers.

I am 100% done with the repair. But there are a few issues. The Vibrator motor seems to be not working. Then, the Digitizer I bought doesn't have a hole for the front facing camera! That is not a major setback as I rarely use it and I have a tablet and a PC to skype chat with... But it is sad that a feature is missing.
The big issue is the vibrator not working. I didn't mangle it and put it back in place as I am supposed to. Finally, I have 1 or 2 small dust particles under the screen and that is ok. I couldn't remove all the dust and it is a miracle I managed to get it that clean. Finally I seem to have a slight green tint/screen bleed at top left corner. I didn't have that before and I didn't distort the LCD while replacing. Is it due to a smudge on the LCD there? I suppose it is a minor issue and not something that will amplify as I have a Transformer prime that has screen bleeds and it is apparently because the screws are too tight.. So may be I tightened something too much? Anyway, if it doesn't deteriorate I am ok, as it is a very, very minor problem.
So, bottom line: Main problems > (1) No FFC (due to improper digitizer) -> I don't intend to fix it. (2) Vibrator motor not working.
Can someone help me with 2?
I fricking fixed it! I have WORK to do and I spent about 4 hrs fixing my phone!!! I'm kinda screwed for tomorrow! At least now my phone works...

That is odd it didn't have a spot for the front camera. I replaced my digitizer and it has a clear spot for it but it is not even close to centered. It actually looks like it would obstruct the camera but it doesn't. If you take it apart again for some reason you can scrape the black off the back so it is clear. However, it is very hard to do that and make it look decent.
Getting it perfect with no dust between the lcd and digitizer is very very hard to do. The first phone I did I actually took it apart again because there not only was dust but smudges on the other side of the digitizer. As for the bleeding I wouldn't think you could cause it from pressure in the inc2 because the lcd and digitizer are just held on the front by adhesive. The LCD has adhesive around the entire edge of it, I don't know if that also blocks light from the edges but if it does and there is a little bit missing maybe it is the cause.

Is the two tone color combination looking sweet, or should I change the back to red as well? I have a spare black back cover. If anyone has a spare red back cover, I can trade!

Is the smudge bad? I think it is just a smudge on the LCD and not a damage to the LCD right? In that case, I am cool, as I most likely will cause other smudges if I attempt to redo it anyway. Plus, I am kinda bummed out about the lack of FFC, but I hardly use it and the whole process of removing the screen is SOOO tedious (and I don't have a heat gun, so had to put my phone a feet above a gas burner! ) and it was so painful and stomach wrenching to safely remove the LCD/digitizer that I don't wish to do it again to repair the FFC...
So, what do ya say?

I think the two tone looks good since the red phones have all black accents. I thought it was weird that the speaker on the red phone is silver, while all the other accents are black.

There seems to be a problem with the adhesive. The digitizer is raised by about 1 millimeter at the top while it is attached better at the bottom. I think it is because I had an additional horizontal strip of adhesive at the bottom to attach the digitizer to both the LCD and the buttons firmly while I didn't put such a horizontal strip at the top as I didn't see one when I dissembled it. If I put pressure on the digitizer for a while, it sets back in place for about half a day. Is this a serious problem? I don't feel like dissembling again.

I just broke my screen and im looking to go the same route. This is a good phone to have as a back up after i get my upgrade and i dont want to get rid of it.
Anyway, did you need all those parts to successfully change your screen? I thought if you bought a new housing you would not need the adhesive tape?

I9250 glass on i515?

I was not a happy camper when I dropped my phone at work this morning and shattered the glass around the front speaker on my vzw gnex. Digitizer and led display are fine, so I'm looking to buy a new glass panel for it. Unfortunately, all the panels I see on ebay except for two are for the gsm one, not the cdma one. I know the battery door won't fit between the two, but the glass should, right? In the pictures everything looks to be in exactly the same spot. The two for the i515 are considerably more expensive than the i9250,which is why I ask.
For the record, I did pretty good; I got my first gameboy color at 6 or 7,and being just a few months away from 21 now, this is the first mobile handheld device that I've ever broken a screen on.

I remember reading on here somewhere that a person tried this and ran into all sorts of problems getting it to fit correctly. I tried searching but couldn't find the post. I would personally just recommend paying more for the i515 glass and knowing that everything will fit alright, rather than taking a chance on throwing your money away.

A user was able to replace the i9250 screen with the i515 screen, but from the post, it said he ran into a whole bunch of problems and that if you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't waste your time.
I would just play it safe and buy the screen that goes with the phone, unless you really want to save money and try it out, but you might waste money if you damage the screen during the process.

Are we talking about the glass or the whole display? It makes a big difference. Assuming all 3 displays are the same (i9250, L700, I515), the problem is separating the display from the frame plate. Its very difficult and you can crack it very, very easily if you try to remove it. The cheaper GN LCD's on eBay are from working units and those already have the frame plate attached to it. The only way to remove it is to use a heat gun and apply it on the top and bottom front areas (as well as the sides). The apply heat to the back frame plate to loosen up the adhesive in the mid section of the screen. Then, slowly and I mean very, very slowly try to pry it open using a thin blade. Start from the top and work your way down. You should stop if you meet too much resistance and reapply heat. Like I said its a pain in the ass and not for the timid. I got to successfully remove an LCD from a frame for a Galaxy S (i500) not too long ago, its a similar in process as the GNex
I also tried to remove a L700 LCD (cracked glass) from a frame a while back and cracked it even more. I know what I did wrong and I think I wont make that mistake again. My mistake was that I did not know the exact location of the adhesive and applied too much heat in the front. Another mistake was that I thought I could remove the front glass from the digitizer. Now I know this is almost impossible and I don't know how people can buy front lenses without using some type of special tools (a true hot air bga station for instance) or a technique that I'm not aware of.
So, that's my long rant right there. I would really appreciate if any of you can confirm that any all 3 displays are the same (i9250, l700, i515). If it is then I would dare to try it out and take some pictures in the process if all goes well.

What about the oven?
I used to be into cars, and it was popular to smoke the headlamps on Nissans. They also have a lot of glue in them, and it was recommended to put em in an oven lol.
I'm sure it would get hot enough to loosen the screen, but 400 degrees may break something else in the process...

You can't use the i9250 screen on the i515. The battery metal thingies and the vibration thing are in different places.

I have asked a bunch of eBay sellers for the last few days and have gotten mixed responses... I don't think that most of them get that I am talking about separating the display from the front case/plate. One guy told me that the digitizer/LCD combo is interchangeable from the i515 and i9250, but it won't work on the L700. One guy told me that he thought that the entire assembly including the front plate were the same between the L700 and i515. Several have said that they are model specific, but I don't think that most of them realized that I am not expecting to use the front plate from an L700 if i9250 on the i515...
It doesn't seem like Samsung would have a different display for each model. I can see the plates and cases being different because some of the other parts are different, but it seems like the LCD panel and the glass should be the same for each model. To me all of the screen connectors look the same from the pics I've seen...

Finally found the post that you are referring to (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780491). Sounds like he ran into problems because he tried to use the i515's front housing on the i9250. I think if he had removed the screen from the frame and re-used the frame that was original to his phone he would have been fine. It looks like it takes some heat and care to do that, but it looks do able.
I am ordering a L700 screen today and will report back on how it goes installing on my i515.

I had a good LCD with broken glass that I was hoping to only replace the glass on and I ended up getting impatient and breaking the LCD. The glass is very difficult to get off. I tried heating it up and using fishing lines to separate the glass from the LCD, but I could not get very far. The glue seems to be spread over the entire surface and it does not take much prying to break the LCD.
Incidentally if the glass is shattered pretty badly you might have better luck than I did. I was able to get the broken "shards" off by heating up the screen and gently prying them off. Where I had trouble was the large section of unbroken glass. I tried to crack that glass to be able to continue to remove the shards, but I ended up breaking the LCD as well.
If you can't use the screen with the broken glass you might give it a go as you aren't really losing anything if you break it.

Ok guys, just wanted to confirm that front glass for the L700 and GT-i9250 the same. And I assume that i515 as well.
I got for repair Nexus Sprint (L700) with cracked front glass but then was surprised that glass for L700 on ebay about $15 and the same glass for i9250 less then $10. Not big deal but anyway.. So I bought the glass for i9250 and it fits great as original.

[Q] Screen Shattered

Hey All.
Been using nexus 7 2013 since last 2 years. My nephew dropped it and the screen cracked from the side. The device is working fine. The touch doesn't work at the the area of the cracks on the top right, and a few other places. But works everywhere else on the screen. My question is what has to be replaced, the digitizer or the entire LCD. My personal diagnoses is only the upper glass needs to be replaced. Please advice further!
Digitizer is for $15 and the whole thing is for $50. What has to be replaced and how to find out?

Get the whole thing. Replacing only digitazer is very difficult and compromises the tablet's construction.

how much cost to replace?

I did it, two times, buy the glass+lcd+digitizer combo, you can find it at ~ $40
It takes 10 minutes to disassemble the tablet and 1h+ to separate the glass from the frame, the glue is very strong and the melting point is so high that you can melt the frame when trying to separate. Even doing this you will have to scrap the glue and zillions of microscopic bit of glass embeded in the glue. It's doable of course, but be patient!

I bought the screen + digitizer from Aliexpress about $20 last month

I didn't have heat gun or other thing, I just scratched the whole screen away from frame, took me couple of hours to completely replace the screen, but works nicely. This was the first time ever I've replaced a screen.
Just make sure you have double sided adhesive tape before you start, about ~3mm or so. My replacement screen didn't include that adhesive so I had to buy it separately.

well done..patience is the key, so id be not very good at it..haha..touch wood ive never dropped any of my tablets/mobiles, hopefully the cases i always put on would cushion any blows, i bought a used nexus 7 2013 and although cosmetically its in great shape, the lcd is showing blue blobs, like ink leakage..stuck pixels maybe, but i dont think you can just do the lcd change, the whole front would need buying which is pointless as i only paid £45 in the first place.. but im so impressed with it performance wise, i got a samsung t280 in the latest sale, returned it after 3 days, the chip inside was shockingly rubbish..
