[Q] Rooting & Unrooting Xperia Play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda comunity!
I got an Xperia PLAY about 2 days ago and it comes with tons of bloatware and pre-installed apps which I would like to erase. I have been searching in Google a way to root and then unroot it but I don't know too much about this since this is just my first Android mobilephone and my consoles just got stolen some days ago I wouldn't want to lose my XPlay... So, if anyone could guide me in the correct way to do it I would appreciate it.
Btw, my XPLAY is an R800a

I use the built in rooting feature of Flashtool ver 0.6.7.0 if it does not work, my alternative would be Doomlord's Zergrush (always works 100% of the time for me). You just have to download some Java stuff like the ADB drivers, etc. There are many useful links on the Xperia Play Android Development section. I have Google as my best friend as well

[Q] lost xplay game launcher more games

I stupidly deleted funandgames.apk on my rooted xperia play.
now when I flip open the pad I cannot goto more games and see what new game delights is available
I have downloaded system dump and still can't find the newer .368 dump
just the old one with getgames.apk which doesn't retrieve any games. just says loading and distant do anything. anyone friendly people Wanna share funandgames.apk with me or direct me to a system dump with this on. your help would be appreciated.
also my battery drains quite quickly on .368 compared to .184 still the same apps etc running nothing different any ideas people. will this stablise over time? cheers
It's the firmware that's killing your battery. Use a generic 2.3.2 and ota to 2.3.3. Had some problem. Also I froze the fun and downloads.apk just press the search button at the top right to see all the xperia play optimized games in the market. I noticed ea and gameloft games don't show so here you go.

[Q] Just a question about rooting

I cant believe that I didnt know 2.3.4 was available for xperia play 0_o
anyways, im currently on 2.3.3 and my phone is rooted. If I update, will my phone be unrooted? (i have a feeling the answer is yes but I just want to make sure).
Also, the stock camera really isnt good, I saw a mod for xperia play where the R button takes photos and L button focuses. Are there other mods similar to this?
And when will virtua tennis (from sega) be available on xperia play? I saw them testing the game out on the play in the sony ericsson blog and 2 months ago...
Yes it will become unrooted again if you update the firmware
depends on how you update.

[Q] r800x/CDMA rom compatibility?

Hi all!
I picked up a Verizon Xperia Play r800x at a thrift store yesterday for $33. Needless to say, I was excited for the find!
I've been looking at the various roms available, and amd getting mixed messages on what is compatible with the r800x... A lot of the information I am finding seems to be outdated.
So, simply put, what compatibility issues should I be concerned about when looking for roms? I'm trying to find a debloated, gaming centric rom, but the ones I have been looking at do not specify GSM/CDMA compatibility. If anyone has a rom recommendation for the device, or can tell me what to look for, I would be very appreciative!
Just as an aside, I do not ever plan on using the phone as a "phone," since I'm on T-Mobile and, well, ya know. I do want Wifi to be working, obviously, but the cellular functionality is totally superfluous to me, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

If you don't care about cellular service then you can use any ROM. I recommend you get gin2 jellybean or Aurora play, or xperia next 2 , or dixperia 3, or Bos. They are all great roms but you should also unlock your boatloader and flash a custom kernel like lupus v12 so you can over clock it'll make gaming a lot smoother

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I'm probably going to be using dixperia 3, that one looks super nice!

So the real question is if you intend on using as a phone or not. If you do, I personally recommend unlocking, rooting, and staying with stock (debloat it with Titanium Backup or the like.)
You'll find that the original Verizon rom is ridiculously stable (very plain vanilla), has around 212 or more of free ram, and everything "just works" how it's supposed to.
Use Holo Launcher and Holo Locker if you want the JB look.

The OP said that they didn't intend on actually using it as a phone, as they are on the T-Mobile network (and thus couldn't use it as a phone anyway).
Also, the 2.3.4 Verizon version broke the Google sync, which causes a host of issues (Google Talk doesn't work, stuff done on the Google Play store website won't be noticed by the phone until Google Play is launched on the phone itself, notifications from some apps will not work).

I swear I didn't see that part :cyclops:. And you're right: 2.3.3 is definately the place to stay if staying stock.
That's unfair!
I'm bought one secondhand in 2015 for $41. Sh•t.

Need Help Flashing

I have an old Xperia Play that's been lying around for a bunch of years now and looked back at my pile of phones including an Xperia Z1, Xperia Z3 and this Play and it dawned on me the uselessness of these working machines, especially seen as the Play has a fully functional gamepad. So my aim is to flash the most recent version of Android that still has drivers for the pad and to give it a tasty ROM on top. Trouble is, I'm seemingly inept. I've scoured the internet looking for instructions but I'm just not following. I have no prior understanding of the subject other than how to turn on USB debugging, the rest I've literally never seen or heard before so if some kind, patient soul could give me a step by step, it wouldn't exactly save the world but it'd make me warm and happy inside that I could play GTA on my upgraded Xperia play. the phone is barebones as it was in the shop atm, so Android 2.3.4 (I think), and I saw an XMB style ROM and would like to use that if that helps with the process of explaining. Thanks in advance.
