desire hd problems.. - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi..
i am experiencing problems with my desire hd.
every 3-5 minutes the car mode app starts for no reason and my gps starts receiving draining my battery. another strange thing is whenever i call someone it always starts the call in speaker mode...
i tried even deleting car mode app from titanium backup but stil it manages to start.-.-.
i also tried flashing cyanogen and every other rom with the same result.
any help?
thnx in advance..

its your micro usb port on the phone. Try cleaning it out with a pin or tiny screw driver. I was shocked at how much lint i pulled out of mine after a couple months of dealing with that same problem. Hasn't been an issue since.

thnx for your reply!!
but is that safe? what if i accidentaly scratch it? and how exactly shall i clean it.?
thnx in adnvance
...

I used a small flat head screw driver and dug out a bunch of pocket lint. As long as you don't bend the contacts you'll be fine. Just gently scrape around the contact, not the contact itself. I think the lint + charger causes the contact to be bent either up or down a bit tricking the phone into car dock mode.

Speaker phone defaulted on

So still running a froyo based Rom and whenever I make a phone call it always defaults with speaker phone on. Just started doing this a couple days ago. Tried rebooting, cleared cache and still the same. Any suggestions?

If its caused by the car dock mode I think I found a fix.
I turned my phone off, cleaned out the USB port on my phone and bridged all the connections in the charging port with a piece of aluminum foil then removed the aluminum foil and rebooted it.
It happened after buying a charger from five and below. I'm thinking its caused by poor insulation allowing static charges on pins that aren't supposed to have a charge on them, however, I am not sure what causes it...
Either way, cleaning didn't work but the crumbled up piece of aluminum foil did the trick. Give it a try and let me know if it helps so I can chalk it up to actual fix or random chance.

Well the car panel app starts up when I reboot the phone so I unchecked the automatic start and the app don't open anymore. So I basically just take the foil and shove up in the port then plug the charger in?

I had the same problem just a few days ago. I took my phone in after having putting it back to stock (Stock Rom and S-ON). They ran the diagnostics and then replaced my phone for $35 under the 1yr warranty. Their first suspicion is water damage but if your water markers are in perfect condition and your phone looks like its in good shape then they might replace it. My 1yr launch day phone looked like the day i got it so they replaced it without any questions. Good Luck!

Ok, let me post very clear instructions on what I did. If your car dock comes on when you turn the phone on , this is the exact same problem I had.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I DO NOT GUARANTEE THIS WILL WORK AND I AM NO RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR PHONE. Below is exactly how my phone was fixed once and for all.
Here are very specific instructions on how I fixed mine:
1. Power off phone
2. Remove battery entirely
3. Get toothpick, CAREFULLY and GENTLY clean all debris in the port, I pulled out a ton of dust.
4. If you have compressed air, use it and clean it out with that as well
5. Take a piece of aluminum foil, crumple it up a bit and carefully stick it in your charging port and bridge all the tiny pins together, BE GENTLE but kinda move it around and make sure all the pins get touched by the aluminum foil at the same time.
6. Remove aluminum foil from charging port and discard.
7. Put battery back into phone
8. Power on and hope your phone doesn't have its speaker on next time you make a call.
Good luck.
Well apparently my phone must be f'd up. Tried the fix posted above a few times with no luck tried 3 different chargers with no luck. So I guess maybe I should unroot and maybe get the 3d. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Thanks for this post, I was about to post the same thing. Ended up doing the tin foil trick (took some from the hat I wear on my head). No more answering on speaker phone
So the strangest thing happened. Made a call before lunch and phone went straight to speaker as usual..went to lunch and left phone in the car, car was hot when I came back went to make another call and no speaker lol. Plugged in headphones and was able to control volume. And so far made couple more calls and all is good. Seems it took a week for it to work itself out idk.
Its def the charging port causing the issue. Had the same thing happen to mine last week on my Launch Day evo (Hardware 0002).

-If you dont feel like reading that thread then ill give the short version.
I tried cleaning it out with electronics cleaner and it didnt help. Heck, i used a bit to much on my last attempt (of 4) and it got under the screen. The phone still worked like a champ but i hated that water look. So i claimed Ins on it and paid the 100 on it.
I should have been smart and had unrooted and taken it to the sprint store and paid 35 for the warranty.

I'll second the NoDock. I bought the paid app and it was the only one of a few I found that worked reliably. No issues for me anymore. I'm not bothering with replacing my phone at Sprint as I plan to leave them as soon as Galaxy S2 comes out anyway.
This was a bug caused apparently by Skype for me, in fact almost all the bugs on my EVO 3D are coming from Skype.
No Skype running or logged out, no problem.

If this is only happening when you're charging then it's most likely some funk up in your microUSB port; clean it out and you should be good to go.

see my thread about NoDock in the themes and apps section. it's the only permanent fix (aside from phone replacement) that I've found for the autodocking bug.
it's either a faulty usb port or a defective microusb cable in our (Vision owners) cases. removing car home won't help, downloading one of the car home replacement apps won't help, you have to kill the docking event at a lower level than that.
It happening even when I'm not charging the phone, when I text or facebooking while its not charging its driving me crazy, I'm gonna try that NoDock app see how it works out.
Thanks

How can I use NoDock with 2.3.4? As far as I have researched there is currently no root for 2.3.4 and the phone must be rooted for NoDock to work?
Mac
i keep having the same problem, whenever i reboot my phone, car home automatically starts, and when i exit out of it a notification appears saying that car home is disable, click here to enable it(something i have never seen before) i dont want to remove car home, because i like and use this one over the 3rd party apps, i find it kind of annoying
Well, I completely removed both the car home launcher and app and they're data with titanium backup, then reinstalled the car home through the gapps flashable zip and no more problems for me (crossing fingers)

T-Mobile just put up a note on this a few weeks ago, says to use NoDock for now (can't post URL, lurker not poster to xda).
//support. t-mobile.com/ docs/DOC-2883
And yeah, this just started happening to me yesterday. My G2 got the OTA to 2.3.4 about a week or so ago. It seems to sometimes be affected by my charger (like here at work, if I fiddle with the charger while it's plugged into the phone, sometimes I can make the Car Home app come up), but this also happens when I haven't been using a charger for a while.
It's a stock G2.
Everybody is saying get a new charger, might be a bad pin in the USB port on the phone or in the charger, might be a dirty USB port, might be magnets (how do they work?!). Seems like this just started happening for a lot of users not long after they got the OTA to 2.3.4, and it's happening on many different devices and carriers.
TMO says Google and HTC are on it but haven't found a root cause yet. *shrug*
I'm gonna try Dock-No-Op.
Nathan
Car home no more please!
My carhome just started its glitch. I installed the dock-no-op app and now my phone flashes off and on when carhome turns on and still runs in the back ground. trying something posted on and earlier post....
Bad USB Port
I had this problem crop up suddenly few months back. I tried as hell searching for solution. NODO does the trick for root users.
But one day I braved and tried to change the usb charging port pins. Basically, somehow, the usb charge pins (on the phone) were too close to the upper part of the case. I somehow moved that a bit more to center. While I was super careful and afraid of what this might do the charging pin, I was successfully able to circumvent the problem and has not occurred to me since then.
Again, I had to do this since I did not have any warranty on the phone. If you have a warranty on your phone, I suggest you get a replacement for yourself. And if you are brave heart like me, then go ahead and give it a try.
Good lukc!
Hey all,
Just thought I'd let you know... Though I have a Desire HD, I found this thread after the problem started on mine. The app would not let me quit, reloading and pausing, even during calls. I fixed the issue by cleaning out the USB port with a small sewing needle. Unbelievable how much crap i dug out! Worse than my belly button! I'm not surprised it got confused. Worth a try before you send your phones back?
This has been turning my sgs2 bat**** for the last couple of weeks. I've tried cleaning out the usb port with contact cleaner, but couldn't really get the cotton swab in there too well. Will try the sew needle suggestion. I've also flashed all sorts of ROMs to no avail. It happens even when I'm not docked! And kicks me off of calls and apps that I have open!
kmmerwana, can you better describe what you did? Did you just push the microusb pin up with say a screwdriver?
Likely fix
Like others, I first noticed this problem shortly after I got something in the microUSB port. In my case, I was in a sauna, and probably got some sweat in there. This would likely leave behind mineral deposits upon drying, that could cause a short circuit.
I decided to try something a little different - I got some rubbing alcohol and a small toothpick (a pin or needle might be even better), and dabbed the rubbing alcohol into the microusb port. On one side of the microusb slot, the toothpick fit right in and I could wiggle it around a little. On the other side, the toothpick was too big and I just dabbed some extra rubbing alcohol in there, one drop at a time.
This process dislodged a small black thing (perhaps a piece of plastic about 0.5mm cubed) that might've at one time been part of the port, and may have also rearranged some of the mineral deposits left over from my sweat drying in there.
It didn't seem to work at first - for maybe about an hour, I still had the problem. But now it's been 3 hours, and I've not seen the problem for about 2. It used to be I'd get the problem every minute or two, so I believe the problem is most likely gone, at least until I get more crud (yech) in there.
I of course recommend turning off your phone before trying something like this.

[INFO/REFERENCE] USB Port Problems - Car Mode/Vlingo/Ghost Charging

This post is to describe the issues I've had with the USB Port in my E4GT. You may want to keep this thread handy in case it might help in the future.
This is software agnostic, so the kernel/ROM is not relevant.
So -- anywho -- yesterday I was out of town purchasing a new vehicle and noticed that my phone was getting really poor battery life. I generally can make it through a day with light usage, but I was getting serious, serious drain. I also had my first LOSs -- three of them within a hour. Since the beginning of October, I have only had one LOS, and that was a "ghost LOS". I think the LOS was obviously a major issue in the battery drain, but what I describe below could have had a serious effect as well.
I took the phone off overnight charge at 8:30 AM. After some discussions with the salesperson, he needed to do some stuff. I was waiting and reading a forum with xScope Pro (they didn't have Tapatalk). All of a sudden, Vlingo popped up and asked me to accept the license agreement. I cancelled out of that and the phone told me I was in car mode. I told it to deactivate car mode, and everything was okay. When I was using my EVO 4G, the forums were full of messages about car mode activating, but I never had that problem. I figured it was par for the course that one of my Androids would have this issue. By 4:30 PM, I had the car mode issue come up a few more times, but my car charger and my home charger worked fine.
This morning, my phone would not connect to the computer. I also had a strange "green screen" where everything was in a green hue on my phone. It apparently self-corrected about 10 seconds after it occurred. It would turn on the charging light, but not connect to the computer. My USB jig also did not function. It wouldn't turn the phone on. I started freaking out and was trying to prepare it to go back for a repair/replacement, but Odin wouldn't find it. I blew into the USB port to try to clear out any possible particles... That didn't help. I eventually jiggled/wiggled/cast magic and got it to Odin. Thinking it could be an issue with the kernel/ROM, I hoped that Odin back to stock would fix the problem. I did a ##RTN# reset and plugged it in. Absolutely nothing. No charging light, no beep from the phone or computer.
I started searching and found some XDA threads about the Int'l SGSII and apparently it is a known problem with these phones -- some people even replacing the USB ports themselves. I didn't look to see if the particular part was available for our phones, but I was able to solve the problem by the following:
Parts Required:
1. Dentek Floss Pick (or whatever is non-metallic and small)
2. Contact Cleaner (I didn't use this, but some people said it helped them)
My technique was to carefully use the toothpick to poke around in the USB port and flush out any particles that were in there. I didn't see anything come out. The interesting part of this was a suggestion to "bend the PCB down a bit". That's the part that sticks out of the USB port for your cable to seat on. I moved it down slightly (it doesn't seem to be terribly hard to move). Once I plugged the phone back in, everything worked again. My USB jig works, the regular charger works, the computer recognizes it. I plugged/unplugged it in many times after the "fix" and it seems to work!!
If you try this yourself, be careful not to damage the PCB in the USB port. I'm not responsible for anything that happens.
tl;dr version:
? USB port acting weird? Can't connect? Getting random car mode?
! Clean it out with contact cleaner/skinny toothpick
! Possibly bend the PCB down a smidge
Yeah you see this a lot on android phones and the normal cause is LD or in other words corrosion in the usb port

I just started having this issue last night after having it replaced once already for a "random menu key". Has this issue resurfaced for you at all since this "fix"?
I had the same problem, however, I read somewhere else to nudge the usb port up instead of down. I nudged it up (towards screen) just a bit, and it seems to work fine, now (fingers crossed). YMMV, maybe some are off kilter towards the top and others toward the bottom.
same problem
I have a epic 4g touch that was poorly rooted and needs to be restored but unfortunately odin will not recognize it WHAT SO EVER.
it charges but wont register in windows 7 64bit (desktop) or 32bit (laptop)
I've been using the same micro usb cable.
This mught be the solution, if it works i'll report back
Why does it have to be non-metallic?
Can't I use a pin or something?
Thanks for starting this thread. I just started getting the car mode problem where it will flicker and prompt me to exit car mode.
I'm guessing this trick will work.

Seems good now. Not sure if this is safe or not, but I plugged my charger in, and then slightly tilted it down bending away from the screen. Since doing so, I haven't had any issues of car mode googling on/off on its own. It's been two hours since I did the trick where beforehand, the issue would occur every 10 minutes or less.

Ha! That actually worked. My phone started having the "forever on" red LED, and behaving as if it was always charging (screen wouldn't turn off after 5 seconds when locked like it normally does when unplugged). Bent the little pcb tab down with the end of a plastic toothpick and the light turned off. Hopefully it'll stay, but I'm guessing if it starts up again I'll just have to bend it a little more. THANKS.
Brent,
Glad you got it working! I have had to do this once more since I posted initially -- it really does seem to work.

Been flashing a few roms and everything was going ok until,,,
Tonight Neither my laptop nor my desktop would recognize my phone! Tried different cables, ports, cuss words,,, nothing was working.
A small amount of pressure downward on the usb tab and, BINGO! Back on the road to flashing.
Thanks OP And XDA for being here.
I started experiencing this car mode bug recently, and after doing a factory reset, reformatting all partitions and flashing 3 different ROMs with no luck resolving it, I was sure it wasn't related to software and was getting used to the idea that all the bumps, drops and abuse I had put my e4gt through had finally caught up with me. luckily found this thread and gave it a try. 6 hrs later and everything seems ok. thank you!

Hey thanks for this post man!! I am using SGS 4g, I was struggling with car mode issue since past few days. I was literally scavenging google and XDA until I came across this very valuable post of yours.
I didn't use the materials you suggested instead I used my old useless waste toothbrush to clean up the dirt and blew air in the USB port through my mouth forcefully. And ofcourse I had to bend the PCB a bit.
In the beginning the USB storage wasn't being detected on my laptop, then I bent the USB PCB a bit up and down very gently, this didn't work , so I decided to uninstall the USB storage device drivers from the device manager of windows 7. And there it was, done!! Hehehehe and boy oh boy was I thinking my phone was due for a repair or a check up.
It is a bit risky but as they say finders keepers, losers weepers....
Once again very useful post, thanks for the initiative :good:

I have gotten so many replacements for this problem it's insane. I just got another one tonight. I have 4 batteries and an external battery charger now just to deal with the not being able to charge issue so my phone doesn't die while I'm at work. I'll have to try this next time it happens because I'm sure it'll do it again.

[Q] Stuck charging? - Hardware, yeah?

I've already googled and found that it seems like this problem happens to galaxy nexus owners often so...
I noticed yesterday morning that my phone would think it was still charging despite being unplugged. Looking into the battery stats it could tell when it was or wasn't.
My suspicion is that my use of an old micro usb cable (plastic housing was kind of chipped off) led to it wiggling more than normal, and something got messed up within the micro usb port of my gnex.
It still charges fine. I went on to update to 4.2.1 (dirty flash I guess?); upon booting up it would flip back from charging and not charging for a little bit, then go back to charging.
I think I was able to get my phone to light up and say it was charging while off as well, so I'm pretty damn sure it's hardware...
My issue is that I'm still within a year of my warranty, but I've already rooted and unlocked, and am not 100% familiar with reverting and back anymore... I haven't tried contacting Samsung either.
I think I could live with it being stuck charging, as long as it still charged. It just seems like it has problems reading on whether or not it is or isn't, not being able to charge.
Should I try to seek a warranty fix? What's my best option at this point?
Thanks!
look in your usb port, make sure that none of the fingers are slightly bent touching each other. ive found thats the most common cause of the phone showing that its charging when its not.

I think something may be touching, but I've never looked before so I'm not sure if it wasn't like that to begin with. I'm going to try taking a picture of it tonight when I get off work, but I don't suppose you could explain to me what the fingers are? I tried googling briefly but didn't find anything.
IF you haven't fixed this, try a toothbrush with some rubbing alcohol on it. I had the same problem, and it solved my problem. I imaging some dirt was just shorting a connector.
I had this issue happen to me before. I decided to send it into Samsung for service. I thought it was hardware and I would be dome with it well it is now 3 months later and its doing the exact same thing again, so at this point I know it isn't software, ROM, kernel. I did all that troubleshooting the first time around.
Anybody else had this problem return after being repaired? Is it more than just the micro USB port? I am going to try the tooth brush thing when I get home though. I don't see any pins bent but I will look closer

So I got a toothbrush and alcohol and will be testing that out tonite. I also bought some canned air. Anybody else chime in on what to try? I really don't wanna send it in AGAIN

Just dip a qtip in the rubbing alcohol and dab it on the port or dip the toothbrush I'm the alcohol and then shake it out. You don't want to soak in the connector just enough to help remove any contaminants.

Worked really good xD... At first didn't seem to work, but after charging it and disconnecting the charger the icon disappeared ... That was a couple days ago and so far so good.
Thanks a lot xD

Help! Screen keeps turning back on after turning it off.

My vzw galaxy nexus keeps turning the screen back on as soon as I turn it off, killing my battery at an average of an hr, at most 2... Downloaded an app that tells u which apps are turning the screen on (wakelock) and it says none... App also tells how long phone has been awake vs asleep... Phone been awake for about 95% of the time... Please help... Phone almost unusable unless connected to charger... Oh, btw... As soon as I plug it in to the charger the problem disappears...
Running unrooted, stock 4.2.2 from vzw... If it helps...

I have recently come upon the same problem. Its from a galaxy nexus also from Verizon running 4.2.2 I recently got this gnex as a replacement from a lost gnex. Either refurbished or new the problem starts after I disconnect charger. Have you found any solution?
Sounds like a problem with your USB port.

Have you tried wakelock detector app? Helped me resolve the same issue..

Yes I tried wake clock but it didn't help. Strangely it happens randomly. I took out the battery for 10 secs put it back in and is working properly. I will wait a while and post back tomorrow morning.

If you've used the app, you should know there's hardly anything random about it. When a particular wakelock has exceptionally high usage, Google about it (can be done from within the app) and get some insight into what is triggering it. Then you can disable/suspend that app/service.

I had that happen on a custom kernel once. Flashed a different one and it was fixed....Doesn't seem like it'll help you though

I had that problem. Try to move that little thing in charging port with something thin, needle or knife. Thats how I solved it few months ago and since then I haven't had any issue. Hope this will help

I think that might fix it. Im still having the same problem, my fix is taking out the battery. I will try your fix and post back later.

Problem is no longer there. Just stopped doing it. ??????
My dose it when I'm at 100% battery after it drops below 90% stops doing that

Mine was having the same problem, but I followed the advice of an earlier post by Godra and it has stopped turning on automatically. Basically, I used my pocket knife to clean out under the pins in the micro USB charging port. I also bent it up just a little bit (be very careful not to break it) to keep it away from the metal housing, which is a ground. Something must have been shorting one of the pins to ground (the housing) causing it to continuously wake.

solved
Prying or cleaning the USB connector did not help in my case. Battery charge indicator sometimes stayed on, but sometimes not. Battery drained really fast.
I bought a charging flex connector board replacement (they are really cheap on ebay), watched some youtube videos explaining the how to change the board and when my new board arrived, my phone was fixed in under 15 minutes.
My gnex now holds charge for over 24 hours with moderate use.
With Jelly Bean 4.3 installed and a new charging port, it feels like a brand new phone!
open-source software solution

Hi,
I have developed an open-souce (GPLv3) app that helps save battery when this happens.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484871
SnooZy Charger turns off the screen on these ghost connections, saving battery consumption by the display. It does not fix the charging issues, but it reduces the battery drain when this happens.

ps: sorry if this is considered as self promotion or xposting but this issue has been reported on multiple threads..
Hi, i had the same problemen as you all, but i solved the problem by remove all the dust from the input of the charger connection from the phone. I think that the dust was maken some kind of shortwire and that that was the reason for it to turn on the screen, after i cleaned all the dust from the charger point in the phone, my problem seems to be solved. Can some one else confirm this?

I happen exactly that, how could you fix it?
Had the same Galaxy Nexus problem with the display switching on sporadically or turning back on seconds after the phone was manually switched off. The display was the number one consumer of energy due to energy statistics even without using the phone. Bluetooth, GPS were disabled and no special apps were running on the phone.
Hint:
The battery statistics graph's detail view logged charging events although the phone was not connected to a USB charger/port. The display was logged as active parallel to these events. So basically the phone thought it was connected to a charger and switched on the display which it normally also does, but since this charging status was repeating over and over, the display wouldn't turn off by itself.
Yesterday, I examined the USB port with a magnifying glass in bright light and noticed quite some fuzz build-up in the port. Otherwise the port looked good and not oxidized or damaged. So I removed the battery and cleaned off the fuzz from the micro USB port. I used a thin thread to loosen the felt-like lint which took me quite some time. Vacuum cleaner didn't work well. Compressed air might be helpful.
What shall I say: The phone charged very well and behaved normal the whole day without any unusual drain and NO pseudo charging events in the battery statistics!
Should this success not persist, I will report ...
