[Q] Re-enable Boot animation - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

A while back I was using a ROM (I think Winner's kang), and there was an option to disable boot animation. I checked that. That option has since disappeared and I can't figure out how to re-enable boot animations. I've flashed CM over it x times since then, but still no animation. Any ideas how to get it back?
If I do a factory reset It comes back with a new ROM, but I'm trying to avoid re-doing all my settings. I've already done a fair amount of searching the web and XDA for this, but nothing seemed to fix this.
Thanks for the help!

Working on finding out...may or may not be successful.
One minute!
Clear data on rom control and reflash the rom maybe.
I downloaded alogcat.
And enabled boot ani in AOKP M4.
Log cat states that it ran the script system/bin/sh
Maybe try running that in script manager. But I doubt that will work.

I'll give it a shot. Couldn't hurt!
Thanks

...Just tried it. Nope!
I read somewhere editing the init.goldfish.sh (system/etc) might do it, but i got nowhere with that either.

i know this is not the solution that you need but it might be an idea on how devs can avoid creating this problem from the start:
simply move the bootanimation.zip to another location. This will disable the boot ani and in case a user wants it back, it's as easy as moving it to the /system/media folder
as for your issue, in case you decide to reflash the rom, titanium can bring back your apps in a flash and most launchers have an option to backup settings. all in all it takes less than 10 minutes for me to reflash and have my phone as it was before.

Thanks. I thought if you removed the animation it defaulted to the original Android animation? Maybe not.
But yes, titanium and launcher backups are my backup plan.
Thanks for the help
If I cant figure it out by Sunday I might just do that.

Have you tried Root Tools? It's available on the Market err Google Play.. claims to enable and disable bootanimation.

I just gave it a whirl-no such luck.
Thanks for every one's suggestions. I think I'll pm the dev and ask him if he knows what that option affected.
I'll post any revelations as soon as I hear anything

And you have a known working bootanimation.zip in the system/media folder?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

To the best of my knowledge, yes. Otherwise it would just show a black screen, right?
Instead it just shows the Google logo with the unlocked icon.
Strange, I thought others would have had this problem too.

I suffer from this problem as well, tried everything else I've heard. Now I'm just going to wipe . Oh well

can't you get a hold of a version that has the option and toggle it on/off?

Not a bad idea. I'll check to see if I have any old ROM's with it.

Anyone have a really old winner ROM?

His repository is at goo.im/roms/winner00. All roms from 1/23 to 2/16

open "etc/init.goldfish.sh" in a text editor
-in the end you will find "setprop debug.sf.nobootanimation 1"
-make it 0
also you can try adding those lines to the build.prop
ro.kernel.android.bootanim=1
debug.sf.nobootanimation=0

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that once before with no luck. Just tried it now too with a new ROM. unfortunately, it still didn't work.
Thanks for the suggestion though!

have you tried mskip's GNex Toolkit? it has a Phone Mods section where you can enable/disable that option, maybe that would work?

second screenshot shows the mod list... good luck!

are you sure "system/bin/bootanimation" exists ?

Yup, that's there. No file extension tho. And I have the animation file in system/media and local/media. Regardless a new ROM should over write all that info, right?

Alternate Spash Screens?

Are there any alternate spash screens out there? Or is it generally discouraged (not safe) on the Nexus? I was thinking of changing mine. I changed the one I had on my Droid Incredible and always loved that little personal touch. I was thinking of using this one but I wasn't sure about it being horizontal. I know several of the boot animations are horizontal though, so maybe it doesn't matter.
If you're talking about the bootanimation you can and its quite simple....just move bootanimation.zip to system/app using Root Explorer(or any file browser).
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Nope. I'm talking about the very boring "Google" black screen that comes up just before the boot animation.
There was a lot of talk about changing the splash screen on these forums as well as on rootzwiki. No one seemed to have a clue of how to do it and it seems like everyone lost interest rather quick. lol. So as of right now it appears to be UN-changeable. I hope someone eventually figures it out though. I've tried digging through framework res files to find the images because I heard that's where they might be and I had no luck.
Well poop....
Kind of an old thread, but I figured I'd reply. I'm unsure exactly where it is located on the gnex, but it wouldn't be in the framework. the splash image loads before the phone boots. This would lead me to believe that it's stored on a partition (probably hidden, in or about the area of the bootloader or radios). There's a pay app on the market made for galaxy nexus devices (seems to be most versions) called Logo Me. If I fail to dig up the relevant information, I'll end up buying the apk, but it is indeed possible. I'm not beyond buying the app, I just haven't given up trying to figure out how to do it by hand, since I used to do it all the time on HTC phones.

Im pretty sure I saw a thread on how to do it earlier today. Either here or in development, and it was a new thread.

Thats a really good way to hard brick your phone. Not worth the risk. Probably one of the few ways you actually could brick this phone.
There's an app called logo me in the play store. There's also a thread buried here in the themes and apps section about it. The app allows you to change the Google logo and the little locked/unlocked lock under it with just a push of a button. Its a paid app though, worth it depending how bad you want to change those images.

Enabling NFC on CM10 for S3? Maybe I'm just blind?

So I searched for the answer, but everyone seems to say that GW is working on CM10...I did get it installed with the workaround, but what I'm finding is that in my Settings app in CM10, that there is no NFC option. Am I just blind and missing it in a different menu, or why does it not show up? I'm using the newest 7/29 stable build.

Don't hold this answer against me, but I am pretty sure that the NFC drivers are absent, Since CM10 is still in preview phase.

So I'm curious...on CM10, where should the settings be? Am I missing something, or should I reflash? Also...my soft buttons are gone?! Just the lights...they still work...
WOW!
I thought I was loosing my mind. I'm glad I'm not the only one having this issue. I scoured these forums so much today my phone ran out of juice around noon. I wonder why some S3 747 users are having issues and others aren't. I have the AT&T variant and am using the 07/29 preview release just like the other posts. I have already done all the wallet fixes, but can't seem to find how to turn the nfc on either. Can you tell us the work around you used to get yours to work?
I'm having the same problem, NFC options do not appear in settings and Google Wallet states that NFC is disabled. This is on an ATT SIII, running CM10.
Exactly...no idea on my end. I'm also finding that Android File Transfer doesn't work, so I can't use my new SD card...I also cant back up, since my current one is full...feeling like Im stuck for now.

You're running the preview build, right? Did you have to do anything to get NFC running or was it enabled by default?
So... By any chance, did you miss a step in the wallet workaround install? I had the exact same problem. Ended up having to wipe and reinstall my rom. Then follow the wallet workaround instructions exactly. Also, if you ever installed wallet from the market, go in and make sure auto update is unchecked. If you look at the original wallet thread in the development forum you'll see this happened to a couple of folks. Not sure of the cause, but I know that I had to reflash and also disable that auto update. I'd recommend a nandroid right after you reflash a clean rom and verify that nfc settings are there (under wireless - more).
HTH
Good luck!

Thanks for that, but that was the first place I checked...since that's where it always is. The whole problem from the beginning was that it wasn't where it should be.
Anyway....
Good news. I found a workaround if it's missing. If you install CM9, make sure its there, then do a no-wipe install of CM10...there it is. Not sure why that works, or why it's missing in at least a few people's downloads of CM10, but that's my workaround. Going to try the newest version wallet workaround now and make sure it works.
I'm running into a really strange problem... while running a clean install of CM10, NFC is available in the menu. However, after installing Google Wallet via this method:
blog.tekkidd.com/2012/07/howto-install-google-wallet-on-att-samsung-galaxy-s3-sgh-i747
the settings option for NFC disappears.
I can run NFC by going through root access and installing nfc.apk from the app folder, however, this makes the phone EXTREMELY unstable, and it will begin to freeze up every few minutes. For the time being, it looks like the best option would be to wait for Wallet compatibility to be improved in the coming updates.
That is really weird. What I did was flash CM9, then CM10. (now I'm on paranoid android...but anyway). NFC was there, then I used the method listed in the Q&A section to load the newest version. Of course, when I went to McDonald's to use it...it failed...as it always has ( I had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus at one point). I've never seen NFC actually work for real. I don't know what it is, but maybe the people that run the businesses don't have it turned on correctly. I was really wanting to see it work too.

switched from Iphone 4 to galaxy s 3 and love it

Hey all,
I switched from Iphone 4 to galaxy s 3 and love it. I want to know if there's a way to delete apps that came with the phone ( all the ATT apps)?
also I have the Samsung SGH-I747, what's the difference from the I9300? I see that everywhere when I google samsung galaxy S 3 4.1.1 update? will that work with my phone?
I tried to root my device but it was giving me errors so I unrooted.
I'll definitely try that again soon.
What are good sites for info and "hacks" for this awesome phone?!
Any good App recommendations?
So far I'm impressed with the phone and love it!!!

Nice move! To remove apps, root the phone and you'll have that power. BUT.... this is the Sprint SPH-L710 forum, not the AT&T. Do not flash anything from here, go to the AT&T thread and read up on what is working over there.
Sorry, Should I move this thread? or will the Mod do it?

I too made the switch a couple of months ago. I've since rooted and installed CM10 nightlies and I'm loving it! This phone is such a refreshing change from the iPhone and I'm learning something new all the time.
If I can give some advice. You have a lot more power over the S3 than you did with the iPhone, even with Jailbreaking. Because of this you can really screw the device up if you don't do something correctly, just be sure to read and read and keep reading. Ask questions and then when your sure, read a bit more then take the plunge. Once you get a grasp of things the mystery goes away and it's no big deal but until you've rooted and installed a recovery, then ROM'ed your phone it will seem crazy.
Enjoy it.
Root your phone. Follow Mr Robinson's post under stickies. Then download titanium backup. You should have everything you need there.

Welcome to the flash crazy work of Android :silly:
The i9300 is the international version, and the i747 is the AT&T version. You want to make sure you DO NOT cross flash anything from the i9300 onto the i747 and vise versa, you will brick, and brick badly.
For Rooting I wrote this up a while back and should be useful:
Recovery mode:
Hold down Volume Up, Home and then the Power button
Download Mode:
Hold down Volume Down, Home and then power until “Warning!!” message is displayed
Press Volume Up to continue.
Navigating Clockwork Mod Recovery:
Use the Volume Up and Down arrow keys to change the highlighted option and the home key to select an option. The Back soft key works, but will not be lit and will take you back one screen.
1. Make sure all Samsung Drivers are installed.
2. Copy CMW_SuperUser_v3.07.zip to your internal SD
3. Reboot your phone into download mode
4. Go into the folder you extracted Odin3 into and run Odin3 v3.04.exe
5. Connect your phone to your computer via USB
6. Click on PDA and in the Open window that pops up navigate to clockworkmod.tar
- Verify that ONLY Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked
7. Click Start.
8. Power off your device and boot into Recovery mode
-To boot into Recovery mode: Hold down Volume Up, Home and then the Power button until you are in Recovery (it should say CWM-based Recovery at the top of the screen)
9. Install CMW_SuperUser_v3.07.zip
10. Reboot
11. Install BusyBox from Google Play Market, grant it SuperUser permissions and it'll walk through the rest.
12. Update Binaries.
- Open the SuperUser app
- Get into settings (the wrench icon in the upper right of the screen)
- Select Su binary under the General section towards the bottom of the list
- Select Update
To remove the bloatware from AT&T, you will need to root, and there are 3 ways that I use to remove that stuff. 1 is to buy Titanium Backup, and "freeze" the apps you don't want to use. They are still installed, but are not visible.
2nd way is to use Titanium Backup, and Backup and/or uninstall the apps. The 3rd way is to get a root explorer application(there are a few good free ones) and go to system/apps, and manually delete them yourself. The easiest way would be to freeze them in TiBu, and the safest. If you mess something up, you can always go back and Un-freeze the app
This SHOULD get you going
Hey! Welcome to the wonderful world of android. You are in for a lot of treats as I'm sure you've seen already. To answer your question about removing the. "bloatware" as we call it, there is one other way other than rooting you can get it off your app drawer and make it easier to ignore. Find the app you want to get rid of. Then press and hold on it until the home screens come up. Drag the icon down to the "app info" icon and drop it there. This will load up the info screen. From here, select the "disable" button and it will be removed from your app drawer. This is an easier way than rooting and it won't void your warranty either! Hope that helps.
Also, check out the amazon app store. It is pretty awesome. Free app every day. You can also customise your phone using zedge.

NVM I figured it out
I made the same switch
I am going on about 2 weeks now with the GS3. It is a big learning curve so far. As the stock GS3 with touchwiz I am not a fan. I do not like what samsung did to android at all. In particular all of the motion stuff is really stupid and the samsung messaging app is just terrible. I also don't like their default keyboard.
However I rooted it and installed CM10 and I really like that. I am a little torn as I dont know if I should judge this phone based on how it is in stock mode or for everything I can do with it (rooting, roms, etc....). Coming from the iphone I do miss the stability and ease of use. But I do like the bigger screen the LTE and being able to customize more, like what apps open with what actions and what not. All of the sharing options are nice too.
I would say if I was stuck with touchwiz I would probably return the phone and go with another iphone, but being able to use CM10 makes all the difference. I like both OS's and think each has their positives and drawbacks.
I am not trying to start a flame war just giving my opinion after a couple weeks of making the switch.

Agree, but I wish it wasn't required to enjoy the phone. sometimes you want something to just work. plus most of the ROM's have at least some issues that wouldnt be found in a release by a major company. Though touch wiz was just as buggy.

I made the jump from iPhone less than a month ago and have already tried atleast 7 diffrent roms...
Stock rom worked just fine for me all the time and I do find the motions useful...just disable them if you dont like them... I think like you that both have their pros and cons...but im finding much more pros for the Android than iOS...
Maybe there was something wrong with your phone from the get go...just saying consider taking it back to the store for a new one...cause I never had any bugs in touchwiz when I was running the stock rom...
Not trying to be rude, just giving my opinion...

I came from an iPhone 4 to a Galaxy SII (I777) last year, and now I just got the S3. I understand where your coming from where you like the ease of use of iOS and the stability, but to be honest I wasn't having any trouble or stability issues on the either of my phones with the stock ROM on Touchwiz. With that being said I still flashed a lot of other ROMs because I love tinkering and trying new stuff, I decided to stick with AOKP which is a CM10 AOSP based ROM and I couldn't be happier. I do miss some of the neat features with touchwiz though, like Smartstay and Direct-call.

Rogers One Android App out! (but only for tablet, possible non-tablet fix?)

i noticed that this was very very silent news as i assume rogers doesnt want people to use this, since it basically allows free unlimited calling:

however, i am unable to download it as i dont have a tablet. i've actually tried using a device spoofer to make my galaxy S be recognized as a nexus 7 but still doesnt let me download.
does anyone know if non-tablet can install tablet apks?
regardless, perhaps this opens up more of how one can develop a non-tablet version.

New to gnex

Hey guys, just got a gnex, and I'm liking it so far. I will root later tonight and I want to start with cm10. Problem is, the op probably isn't very up to date and there are 420 pages of discussion (on tapatalk). Can someone give me a quick run down of what to flash to get me started with cm10 on the gnex? I know I need the ROM and gapps, and maybe another kernel. I can handle those myself. Any other add ons that y'all recommend? Thank you in advance!

Honestly, for now I'd just install one of the available 4.2 ROMs instead. I switched from CM10 to Bigxie's 4.2 ROM and absolutely love it. It's definitely a bit snappier and more solid than CM10 was for me.
The only thing I miss is the DSP manager but really that's the only thing that is worth mentioning at this point. Even the notification toggles are a moot point now since the 2 finger swipe gets you to your quick toggles in 4.2 now anyway.
Thanks, I'll take a look at that ROM. Aldo, in currently stock, but I keep getting an error when trying to download apps. I've cleared market, play services, and frameworks, as well as removing and re adding my Google account. I have even completely wiped data and started over. All these fix the problem at first, but it soon starts happening again. Any way to permanently fix until I root and update? And do the custom ROMs suffer this issue?
