MicroSD lost 2GB, cannot be recovered with gparted - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
Yesterday I've partitioned my MicroSD card to be able to run Leedroid. But now that I want the partition space back to the microSD card and I can't. It seems that I lost 2GB.
- I've tried formatting the SD card while booted in Leedroid, but it just says the card is "corrupted" or some message like that;
- I've also tried using GParted to recover the lost ext partition, but also GParted doesn't show me the ext partition.
- I've tried mounting sd/ext as this seemed to help for a few people aswell.
Can anyone help me how I would be able to recover the lost space on the microSD card?
Thanks a lot!

It formats the SD in FAT, and then you do to him partitions to the card.
The SD is corrupt for extracting the SD of bad form and spending files without withdrawing it in a sure way.
Why don´t make partitions SD card with your Recovery? Is it simpler, aren´t you?
You should recover the whole memoría.
But, the SD would be spoilt.
Grettings.

So as you are saying. I lost those 2GB forEVER? Can't get them back somehow? :S
"Why don´t make partitions SD card with your Recovery"
I did make a partition with clockworkmod recovery if thats what you mean...

Did you do partitions with Recovery? And it will be of 2Gb, insurance....:
Then, if the Rom needs from a partition to start, and this one is of 2GB, you will not recover her until the SD this fromateada in Fat (the whole SD). the Rom, he needs this division for boot, truth?
I think that I am not explaining myself well, or that I do not understand well what you want to say, i´m so sorry!!!

Formatting SD card

Hi. I would like to know if i format my SD card, will this also wipe the ext3 partition? Will I have to re-partition the SD card after the format, or will it still be there?
Many Thanks
i was under the impression that a partition is treated as a different drive. so even if you format your SD card, it shouldn't touch any of the partitions created. like, you have SD card partition and ext 2-4. then only the SD card partition is formatted. of course i could be wrong and please let me know if that is so
As i saw, if you format with slow metod, it will delete also the partition..

and the answer is..........
NO! Formatting your SD card will NOT WIPE YOUR EXT3 PARTITION Tried it last night, and i still have all my apps back on phone and also have 80.88 MB of internal (which is what i had before)

[Q] need help restoring partition

hi,
i might have screwed up idk.
i have a rooted htc desire uscc. CDMA.
i attempted to install latest nightly build of cm_vision_full-23.zip. installation aborted. i attempted wiping, and it still said installation aborted. i attempted a sd card partition of 1024mb and swap size of 128mb. now i cant see any of my restore points. i have a 8gb card now it only reads 6.32gb. is there a hidden partition now? how do i read it? can i get to the restore files and restore (i did do a backup before doing anything, but i dont see those files now, they would be on the "missing" partition i think)
how do i get there? or am i just screwed? how do i get my full 8gb space back?
clockworkmod installed.
Partitioning will format the sd so all your files are probably gone. Also the reason you see only 6.XGb of space is because you have two other partitions using that space. In Windows you can't see the ext partition (i believe) but in linux you will see the card is still 8Gb. Depending on how important your data is you can try to recover it or just boot in to recovery, mount the sd and copy a rom to it.

ok. i can live with losing some of the data on the phone that i had on there. i need to restore it back to 8gb and just do a factory reset. what are the steps in doing that? do i just format the card in linux or something? i would like to remove the partition i created, and get it back to 8gb one partition.
Isn't all your data on the sd card gone as well?
If yes and you still don't really mind best thing is to find a card reader and connect it to a Linux machine (can be live cd or vm), then use whatever disk manage program is available and format the hole card as fat(32).
You might be also able to do this from the memory settings if your phone will boot, but i'm not sure if that only formats the fat partition or the hole card.
yeah its probably gone. im just curious what software would i be using to try and recover the data? if thats possible id like to give that a shot. if not, its not a big deal. i attempted to use "get data back for fat 32" but it doesn't see the other partition.
hm i have the phone connected to vm linux and its showing the mass storage as 6.8gb. i dont see any options to format it or change it to 8gb. what am i missing?
You need to run (or install) GParted
installed and ran gpart. i still only see 6.34gb as a single contiguous partition. theres nothing else i can change, or allocate. its as if i shrunk 8gb sd card to 6.34gb. whered the missing space go? gpart says 6.34gb is unallocated. it doesnt see any more space. all options are greyed out. cant resize, move, unmount, etc.
update: i went to a local target and bought a 8gb sd card with a generic usb card reader. i put the new card in my phone and formatted it via OS. it shows 7.60gb aval space. and 128mb internal space. when i put the old card into the reader i was then able to see all the partitions via windows 7. so, fwiw, you have to use a card reader to see the partitions on a sd card in windows 7.

[Q] Ext3 on 16gb SD Card

Hello.
I have bought a new SD Card (kingston 16gb Class4).
I had a lot of problems with ext3 make. By Gparted it have errors.
I have readed this topic.
Can I repair my SD Card?
Sry for my english.
How are you connecting the card? Via a card reader or still in the phone? If it's still in the phone make sure you are in recovery and not booted in to android.
I made it by card reader. Formatting and partitioning by recovery - errors.
Have you tried erasing all the partitions and creating them again? What happens if you click the 'Repair' button?
I've always done my partitioning with my card in the phone, connected to my PC while in recovery and used Minitool Partition Wizard for Windows (this software was suggested in a thread I read a while ago) and never had any problems.
There is also the possibility of the card having a hardware problem, so you might need to swap it under warranty.
yes, first i have erased all partitions (deleted)
On repair ext - error, fat32 works fine.
first make an extended partition for your fat32 and inside that a primary fat32.
The unallocated space make it ext3

Click to collapse
shouldn't both partitions be primary (no extended ones)?
erase everything 1st keep it unformatted then create fat32 primary then ext primary (optional linuxs swap) this is what i have done when installed miui rom data2ext
i suggest you dont use that card reader try through the cell....
I have tried a lot of methods - ext still no works.

Where did you get the card from?
Stupid question but two of my friends bought cheap (fake) cards from eBay and both had problems with them, either the card kept losing data or they go errors loading from the card due to the poor quality. In which case you need to spend a little more and get a proper card from amazon on a high street retailer.
If not then as suggested use try formatting and partitioning the card through the recovery on your phone, most of the up-to-date recoveries can do this and it's the easiest way to get the card ass needed for a2sd etc. if it still doesn't work then take the card back it's probably faulty.
I bought this card too and even though I had no issues formatting the card I do have speed issues with it. I've been in contact with Kingston and they're looking into it. My writing speed is 1.6Mb/s....
But now a tip for you, I couldn't use Gparted since it's Live CD wont start my monitors. So I downloaded Easeus Partition Master. Very easy to use and it worked perfect.
Start with your Fat32 partition and then your Ext partition.
You can find the program here: http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html

Cannot mount SD card

I was created two partition on SD card 2x2GB and installed Link2SD-1.8.0
Set Link2SD-1.8.0 to use another partition for data, to save space.
After that, I realized, I dont need 2GB for app, I need 800MB.
OK, then I delete Link2SD-1.8.0.
And on PC with MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, delete all partition and create 1st 3gb and 2nd 800mb. I format all partiton as FAT32.
After that Desire wont read my SD card!
I trying create one partion FAT, FAT32, Unformated... and phone dont read my card.
When I go to Recovery and mount USB, Windows read my SD card, but when trying with Desire mount sd card, he saying card cannot mount...
IMPORTANT PART
I trying another card (from nokia N73) and Desire read it.
If I use Desire SD card to N73, nokia says no SD card.
If I return back N73 card to N73, nokia says no SD card!!!?
If I return again to Andoid, then works, but in nokia no longer!
P.S
I dont have card reader...
From what I gathered from your post you made a mistake which causes the problems you described - you made all partitions FAT32... You should only make the first partition primary and FAT32 and the secondary should be EXT(2,3,4 - variant by your preference)... I'm not familiar with that MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition you used but I suspect that it won't do everything you need.... I recommend you reformat your sdcard with sdformatter or gparted (preferably because of alignment ability)... Probably after being formatted in gparted to a single primary partition you will get access to the card. If everything goes well then I'd repartition sdcard to link2sd needs in gparted or in the recovery itself (it probably won't make aligned partitions but to hell with that, they'll work )...
If you are not familiar with gparted search through xda since there are several good tutorials about using it... I use it regularly, i install it to a flash drive (through USBInstaller or Yumi or whatever tool you find) and boot to it, although you can burn it to a bootable cd/dvd just as well...
Hope any of this helped...
I used gparted and now is working! Thanx!
Great thing is gparted!

help with minitool partition

Hello All,
First time poster here and very much a noob so please go easy on me.
I dug out my old htc desire the other day and though i would try out some new roms. I had an old sd card that i seemed to manage to break. i tried to use minitool partition to make a fat32, ext3 and swap partitions all set to primary, for some reason this sd card would not partition. Once i hit apply Mini tool would go though the motions and after a long wait a window titled "successful" pops up "saying apply all the pending changes successfully" however the sd card immediately reverts back to unallocated. I now cant format this card at all, not in minitool partition, sd formatter or windows disk manager. I thought oh it must be an old sd card so bought a new on tried the next day and all worked i had a nicely formatted card with fat32, ext3 and swap partition. So i thought i would try a new rom it seemed to install fine but the phone hung on the white htc screen, so i tried a few times then i get some error about the sd card on the phone. So i take it out put it in a usb reader and try to reformat and now this sdcard is doing exactly the same as the first one. Seems i have a nack for bricking them! Has anyone had this experience with this and do you know how to get the SD cards working again
thanks in advance
matt
Yh never use minitool, it create bad partitions. Use only 4ext recovery or gparted to partition.
