[Q] 4g on with wifi? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just wondering but if you are connected to wifi does your network connection automatically drop 4g to 3g? Or is 4g and wifi on at the same time? When I turn on wifi the 4g symbol above my network symbol disappears but im not sure if 4g is off or not.
Thanks!

Your phone drops cellular data connection while on Wi-Fi and then reestablish it when you disconnect from it. So it will cycle through when it starts back up.

[Q] wireless connection wifi and gprs

hello
i see on my bar the wifi is on and indicates that is on and also the gprs with the arrows is on
so what am i using ?
wifi or gprs?
You should be using wifi to connect to internet while indicator is on.
When you lose wifi signal you start using gprs phone signal.
you should only have 1 on at a time, you sometimes get both for few seconds when you have enabled wifI.

I get them both all the time

Does the sign for the wi fi has ! next to it? If it does it means that your phone has found wi fi network but you havent connected to it, and so you are using gprs.

[Q] gummynex 3g won't work

I'm running the gummynex rom right now and when I toggle off 4g, I cannot get data with 3g
I get about 3 bars, but it continues to stay grey and never turns blue.
I would like to know if this is the rom issue or if verizon is the problem.
Thank you in advance
I have 3g data so prolly not a rom issue. Also I've seen post stating that it turns blue when connected to Google servers. But I have not researched it.

Are you connected to 3g with just CDMA or are you connected with CDMA/LTE? When I have lte enabled I get 4g data and
3g, but when I'm just on cdma, I cannot connect. I waited a half an hour switching over, tried the airplane toggle and even reboot. None of them worked.
Also, what do you mean by Google servers?

When the signal bar turns blue it means you have connection to the google servers (Gtalk/Market and stuff like that).
Yeah I am not getting those at all on 3g, I'm in an area with 3g only and lte enabled and I still am not connected. This is kind of worrying me as I might have ruined the radios with this rom and rooting?

Anyone else think the wifi/4g toggling is stupid?

Why is it if I have 4g "on" I can turn "on" my wifi but to turn "on" 4g my wifi must be "off"? Seems pretty dumb. At my work I have great wifi on one side of the building and 4g on the other side. I have to turn them both on in a certain order though. Is there a fix for this?

im pritty sure they use the same antenna array thats why its done like that
Because wifi sucks less battery. So if you have your wifi on then more than likely you are in a wifi area so why turn 4G on and drain battery. Only way around it is having 4g on and turning wifi on after. The way I see it switching from 4G to wifi is convenient for the battery that's why it's allowed, now if it were the opposite way your just killing battery switching 4g on when you have a wifi connection. You can still see 4g scan for service even when connected to wifi periodically when you have both wifi n 4g radio on (it scans and the min it connects wifi knocks off the connection). This also happens on my Evo 3D. So I guess it's to prevent battery drain..

Personally I like it. Where I work, there is no signal at my desk, so I am on WiFi. When I go outside to talk on the phone or take a break, I like only having to disable WiFi to get the 4G to turn on for faster browsing.
That coupled with the issue of the 4G not rescanning after a while, you may have to cycle your 4G anyways.

LTE and 3g handoff problems

I just came back to sprint from Verizon and I have 4g in my area but its weak at my house. My problem is this. Ill habe tje 4g icon in the status bar but it wont do anyrhing cause its so weak but I cant get 3g to come on and sometimes when I switch off wifi I have no data at home until I reboot or toggle airplane mode. Its like its not switching between 3g and 4g properly. Anyone else have this problem? I just got the phone 3 daya ago and want to make sure its not my phone. Ill also have trouble when it does finally show 3g from 4g it takes a while bwfore the 3g will even give me internet access. Thanks for all the help guys.
Also I know I can just switch to evdo mode and it works fine thwn but its a oain to switch it to lte when I keave cause when I leavw the house I get good 4g service.

4G is always a priority over 3G if you have it enabled. There's no way around it unless you switch lte off. So if you're in a weak 4G coverage and your phone gets the signal it will take over your 3G. Wifi is always 1st priority, 4G 2nd, then 3G, finally 2G. As long as those radio are on that's the order they work. Was always like that even in wimax devices. Switch to cdma while at home or connect to wifi.

Poor LTE signal, doesn't switch to CDMA, WiFi calling flakey

When I am home I have little or no LTE coverage, and even though in network its set to LTE and CDMA, it never seems to switch to CDMA even though I have like no LTE coverage at home. I never have more then 2 bars, usually I have 1 or no service at all.
And WiFi calling is unreliable as well. Often it says it's logged in but it doesn't work, it it fails to login and then apparently doesn't try to login again. If I turn WiFi on and off, the WiFi calling usually then logs in.
Anyhow, if I can't get the phone to automatically switch over to CDMA or if I can't get WiFi calling to work reliably, I'm going to cancel my sprint service since my phone isn't really usable at home. I don't want to put the phone into CDMA only since I would have to reboot the phone every time I go outside to get back on LTE
BTW, I get great LTE signal right outside my house.

staying on wifi doesn't really help me since wifi calling doesnt seem to be very reliable. Right now staying on lte seems like a better option since at least i can see when i have no signal. Wifi calling half the time says it's logged in, but it doesnt work.
you may need to get an airave since you aren't having service in the house. Just call up sprint and let them know what is going on and ask for one. Hope this helps!
I'm just worried the airwave well be as reliable as the wifi calling since it's essentially the same thing.
I wonder if there's something in android I can tweak that will make the phone jump to CDMA if the 4g signal it too weak.
I've noticed that if I have one bar and make a call, it almost always jumps to full bars as soon as I started the call. I'm guessing it's jumping over to CDMA. But why doesn't it do that when the phone is idle?

I believe that the bars you see before initiating a call are the data signal strength. When you press the call icon the phone Radio switches to cell 1x signal. which is usually pretty good in most urban areas and that is why you would see the signal bars jump to full strength.
My wife uses WiFi calling at home and it works very well. Maybe disconnect your phone from the router and do a restart/reset of your router. Then reconnect.

Why would it show that if the phone is on wifi though?

I've tried turning the wifi on and off on the phone. That will usually get it to work, but I have no way of knowing if it keeps working since as I said, it will sometimes say it's logged into the wifi calling but not work.
I tend to think it's not an issue with my router since every other online activity works great, including skype or streaming 4k videos on Netflix

The Wi-Fi icon is also a signal strength indicator. When on Wi-Fi the signal bars to the right are mobile data, then when you receive or make a call they switch to cell tower reception strength. When I'm on wifi and see only one signal bar next to it I know that I'm on LTE. if I see full signal bars and I'm not ona call, I know I'm on 3G. if I turn off wifi I will see either the LTE with 1 bar or 3G icon with full signal. this is at my house so its always the same and its a easy way to check how the signal strength indicators work on your phone. make sense?

I have two signal strength indicators on my phone. One for wifi, and one for call (or data). So i don't really understand how the wifi icon is also a signal strength indicator since there are two separate icons for that. Why would the phone show an indicator of the strength of data if I am on wifi and not using the data connection? On my phone (note 4, rooted but stock) i pretty much always have full wifi signal strength, but i have have zero bars/no service on the signal strength icon and when that happens, if anyone tries calling me, it never comes through. I don't have anything in the missed call log - just no call. Can't send a txt either.
The next time the phone drops to zero bars/no service and i happen to have someone else with a non-sprint phone, i'll try calling myself just to confirm the behavior.
Same for me. The signal and data quality is ****e compare to Note 3

So on the same network you had better signal strength with a note 3 vs a note 4?
