This mod will change the stock grey gradient background in ICS to solid black (see attached pic). This should work with any ROM. To install, see the instructions at the bottom of this post taken from atticus182's thread (anywhere that it refers to "Softkey Style", replace that with "blacked-out.zip").
This zip is 100% the work of belipe: blacked-out.zip

*** ZipThemer ***
Download and install ZipThemer from the Market
Download a Softkey Style using the ZipThemer link in the First Post, and open up ZipThemer on your phone
If this is the first time using ZipThemer, hit the (hidden) menu key -> Hit "Update Edify" -> Hit "Browse" (pick a file that you have flashed before on your phone, like your ROM or a theme) -> Hit "Configure" -> Then hit the 'back' softkey to return to the main screen.
Click the "+Theme" button, browse to the download folder and select the .zip you have just downloaded using the ZipThemer link in the First Post, probably /sdcard/download
Click the "Build It!" button, and when it prompts if you want to make an "undo-zip", click "Always"
You will now see the output screen with the Build Log, check if everything went alright, it will show that a zip file has been created on /sdcard/
Reboot your phone to Recovery after this and flash the .zip file that is created on /sdcard/
Done! If you experience problems or want to undo the action just flash the "undo-zip" that's also located on /sdcard/
*** MetaMorph ***
Download and install MetaMorph from the Market, open it at least once so that the folder AndroidThemes will be created on /sdcard/
Download a Softkey Style using the MetaMorph link and move this .zip file to /sdcard/AndroidThemes using your favorite file explorer
Open MetaMorph, choose "Unzip/Extract new theme" and select the .zip file you downloaded. A popup screen will appear, meaning it has been extracted. Press the "Close" button.
Hit the "Apply all!" button and wait +/- 5 seconds (nothing will happen)
Reboot your phone immediately after this and you're done! Oh, and set a new wallpaper because it may be restored to default..

After seeing the awesome work done in these threads:
[SOFTKEYS] [09-03] Softkey Collection 2.0 [GSM/CDMA]
[THEME] Blue Magic (Full ICS) Theme (CNA 1.5.0 | Universal .zip!) [Mar 10]
I was wondering if it's possible to make a similar zip file to change the grey background in the ICS Settings and other screens to solid black? Is this even possible? Being able to apply this to any ROM using ZipThemer or MetaMorph would be amazing - that grey ICS background gradient is just so ugly.

of course that is possible, as you can see in many themes. I dont know zipThemer or metamorph, but generating a zip with the changed images is very easy.
you can find the image you have to change in /system/framework/framework-res.apk/res/drawable-nodpi the file you have to change is: background_holo_dark.png

Thanks, I'll try the manual route for now then (will try this on BAMF). The reason I thought a file compatible with ZipThemer or MetaMorph would be good is because is auto-generates a flashable zip for you, as well as an "undo" zip. Very convenient and user-friendly.

Yep I know that, but sadly I never worked with that. The manual method is the method I prefer, because I control whats in the zip and whats not
this would be awesome especially for rapid release roms like cm9 nightlies

There is a vrtheme patch somewhere in that thread, or here:

It should work on any rom.
Just an alternative in case you guys don't want to use metamorph. I always use this. Makes for a clean look.

It was popular with some of our beta testers. I couldn't convince the team to let me include it though
thanks for the theme
Thanks for this, they grey gradient always reminded me of the G-Nex screen flaws
Awesome mod! The black looks so much cleaner and fits my current layout much better than that gray did.
Works on Liqiudsmooth v1.3

THIS IS NOT A REAL THEME
Ok, I know this isn't a real theme, but seeing a lot of people flashing the wrong theme or mod on this awesome ROM and falling into FCs and bootloops I decided to release this handy CWM flashable zip. With it you could easily get back to original theme settings without having to reflash the whole ROM.
You have only to put it in your sdcard and if you flash the wrong theme or something has gone wrong with simple mod just reboot in recovery mode and install this zip.
I hope you will find it useful.
The version number should reflect those of the VillainRom while the Revision numbers are used for further file inclusions
The package restores following files:
- framework-res.apk
- android-policy.jar
- framework.jar
- SystemUI.apk
- MediaProvider.apk
- Mms.apk
- Settings.apk
- Phone.apk
- Contacts.apk
It should restore almost all themed files or at least those included in currently released themes.
CHANGELOG
----------------
1.1r3
Adders framework.jar and android-policy.jar to revert from power menu mod
1.1t2
Added Contacts.apk and Phone.apk
1.1r1
First unreleased version. Revision numbers used for future release while version number reflect those of VillainRom

AFAIK the Power menu mod also modifies
android.policy.jar
framework.jar
along with framework-res.apk
so these would have to probably be restored aswell
(well thats what gets flashed in the ZIP file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112713)

This are the gorgeous softkeys designed by arzbhatia as per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669169
For custom ROMs it's safer to flash through ZipThemer so I repacked the images for it.
This is for the BLUE softkeys http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26681999&postcount=87
This is for the GREY softkeys http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26699919&postcount=89
If you don't know how to use ZipThemer, please check the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413582 (scroll past the pics to "Installation Methods (Method 1 Recommended)" and "*** ZipThemer ***"
They will revert to stock when you flash a new ROM and it's advisable to reprocess my zip through ZipThemer and flash the new update file created.
Also, always make a nandroid backup before flashing.
It worked perfectly for me on CM9 Nightlies and for other people on custom ROMs (see original thread), but as usual, install at your own risk.

Hi everybody,
OP UPDATED :
I just wanted to share these beautifull Inverted Black and Blue Apps. I'm only a messenger here, and had the kind authorisation and support of NCANDIANO to post these here for everybody. Please thank him, and most important, go show your love on ROMDROIDHACKS Forum, which is really great !
I didn't made these, so I'll take no credits. Please thank NCandiano, and ROMDROIDHACKS :
Original Thread here : http://romdroidhacks.com/forums/index.php?/topic/15-twistedx-theme/
The amazing TWISTED(X) Theme, made by NCANDIANO, will only work with KILLROMS , but as he's a real Gentleman, he made separate inverted apps only package, for us to use with all other Roms (should work on all J.B ROMS.)
What you'll find (Quoted from Twisted(X) Thread) :
Inverted (Black and Blue) GApps & Extras:
TwistedAppsOnly: http://db.tt/DX8nht1F (Contains for your pleasure: Updated Contacts, Calendar, Gmail, MMS, and Keyboard, Google Now, Email, Calculator, Google Talk, Phonesky(market))(This pack can be used with any 4.1.1 Roms. Google Now may have to be installed seperately, however.)
Flashable App-Zips: For your convenience. In the event you'd like to sample one or two flavors, this is the menu. Have at it.
Gmail: http://db.tt/1veBVDpY
Calendar: http://db.tt/nOxUy7b4
Contacts: http://db.tt/ezCjuaxC
MMS: http://db.tt/dXKhhsf2 (This is the Mms from KillRom, with QuickText)
Keyboard: http://db.tt/VbXsfbbI
GoogleNow: http://db.tt/jDLqcwM0 (You need to be on the updated Google Search from the market for this to work. See disclaimer above regarding if it doesn't take on the first flash!)
GoogleTalk: http://db.tt/waeB0yuJ
Email: http://db.tt/rJ4R5xbd
Calculator: http://db.tt/sYd5V5o6
Market(Phonesky): http://db.tt/H2T9fhVz
FOR BETTER AND NICER AND BIGGER SCREENSHOTS, WELL GO TO : http://romdroidhacks.com/forums/index.php?/topic/15-twistedx-theme/
I particularly advise using these apps with the wonderful RASBEANJELLY ROM, which is already all Black and Blue : http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=rasbeanjelly&device=maguro
OR of course using the Original Theme with KILLROMS : http://romdroidhacks.com/forums/
Instructions for flashable zip : wipe cache and dalvik, flash and reboot.
If you want to revert to stock apps...then you'll have to flash again your Rom after having performed a cache and dalvik wipe.
Usual Disclamer : I'm not responsible for the damages that these could eventually cause to you phone. I suppose you're grown-up people, so you don't need me to hold your hand...blah, blah,.......BUT these apps should not harm your phone if you follow instructions...
Yay... Looking good.
Thanks for sharing.
Would it be possible for me to edit the text (e.g in Gmail) to white?

Has anyone managed to install the quicksearch inverted app? I tried both installing it as a normal apk file and moving it to system/app/ after removing velvet.apk (which should be the normal app) but in the first case I get an error message saying it's not a valid apk file and in the second case it doesn't pop up anywhere in my installed apps list after rebooting the device. Thank you.

Try this one and report ; you don't need to delete first the old one, just put the new one in system/app folder, it will override it, and the phone will reboot.

Oh, that's must be why then. I had moved out of the /system/app folder the original velvet.apk in my attempts. Now even if I move it back to the app folder, the stock google search app won't appear in the apps list no matter what. I guess I have to flash gapps again and then follow your procedure.

Yes, i think deleting first the file must "disturb" the system somehow...
Try with the Quicksearchbox in OP, and if it doesn't work, then try the Velvet one.
Instead of deleting or moving the original files. Just rename them. Then it's easy to undo the changes.
Remember to check that permissions are set.

You are right, I should've just renamed it. That was my bad, I thought that following the rootzwiki inverted gmail client installation procedure would work with those apk as well (mount /system for W permissions as root, delete /system/app/gmail.apk and then install the custom gmail.apk as a normal apk file).
For the record's sake, I've tried flashing latest gapps but I couldn't manage to make google search pop again. Maybe I should just do a clean flash of the rom again and try with the correct procedure.
What's strange is that i'm using too Rasjellybean 9th Aug , and i installed this without any issue.
So volapyk is right , this could be a permission problem.
Vaalen , have you tried the velvet apk too ?
And before reflashing default gapps , have you wipe cache and dalvik ?
Flashable Zips- Black Velvet Forthcoming
I added the apks into flashable zips. They're generic zip flashers they'll work in any recovery. Just wipe cache/dalvik and flash. It's not always just the name with the QSB apk, so I'm going to put together a Velvet.apk when I get home later, in the meantime these should make for easier installs for those who don't want to be messing around in the system/app folder. I'm PMing you the links because XDA won't let me link (not enough posts,) If you would update the OP I'd appreciate it.
**Black and blue UI, Framework, and Inverted Notifications Shade are only supported at the HIVE for Axiom ROMs at the moment.
Enjoy your JellyBean!
OP is updated with your flashable zip NCandiano, again a huge thank to you. As i said i just wanted to use these apps on other roms, and pulled these from your beautiful PZ Theme, and with your permission posted here.
But i didn't think you'd come and offer us even better ! That's great mate ! You deserve your own thread for your own work buddy ! I'm just a user who appreciate and share your work.
Flashed MMS apk and gmail apk. MMS apk works great except when you click a thread on the main screen the area you click doesn't highlight. Is this how it should be? Also gmail apk only screen that is dark is the main home screen. When you click to read an email it is white. Normal as well? Thanks!
[mod][theme] custom nexus 4 "boom" lockring. With modded glow-dots, one flashable zip
just as the title says, this is a lockring i've been messing around with, and it looks sick! The colors pop, and i also modded the glow-dots, so when the phone is awoke, it looks like a flash or explosion. It's very vibrant, and so easy to install. Basically i did all the hard work for you, all you have to do is clock the link, download the zip i've provided, and flash it with metamorph. If you dont have metamorph, just go to the play store and type in metamorph. Choose the free app, download and install. Click unzip new theme in bottom lefthand corner. Go to your downloads folder, and you'll find the zip you downloaded in there. Just click it, and keep hitting continue. Your phone will shut off and reboot(dont panic, totally normal) when it turns back on you'll have the big boom
i'm currently working on a compilation of a lot of different off beat lockrings, and modding the glow-dots to go with them. I like abstract things that most don't have.
if you'd like a custom made for you, don't hesitate to drop me a line in the private message, and i will get back to you as fast as i can.
This lockring was intended to work with a nexus 4 running jb 4.2.2, rooted of course, but i dont see why it wouldn't work fine on other phones(flash at your own risk!!!!)
if you get stuck somehow and need some help flashing, feel free to write me.
Happy modding friends, and enjoy the "boom"
love,
anonymous an7hony

1. Unzip the theme to a folder in your sd card
2. Go to market and install the metamorph app.
3. Use View attachment UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk to root your phone if you are not root already, or my advice-if you have the time for it-is to install a custom rom.
4. Enable USB debugging in settings-applications-development.
5. Open the metamorph app that you installed earlier.
6. Tap "pick existing theme"
7. Navigate to the folder that you unzipped the theme to, and then select the "ICS_theme_1.0.xml" file to let metamorph know how to use the theme.
8. Follow the prompts and when it reboots, just let it, as it needs to reboot to edit system files, much like chkdsk on windows.
9. Enjoy! This theme has a black statusbar and holo buttons much like the ones in ICS -correction- they are the original buttons, taken directly from the source! Give me feedback if you think there is anything missing
P.S. I am working on a video tutorial on how to install cyanogenmod, so if you are having trouble rooting your phone, then it will hopefully help.

But thanks for the help you given me... :good:
you might need to adjust the reboot timeout in metamorph settings, so that it doesn't reboot in the middle of the operation.
You might try ninjamorph, but no promises. What ROM are you using? If you want, I can email you a copy of the one I know it works for.
now on cm 6.1 stable

hello bro, sorry for the late reply, recently I tried it on EzGingerBread but it failed when I apply it nothing happen but now I'm on CM 6.1stable (I don't want gingerbread builds I find them so slow on my phone) thanks in advance.
That's funny, I just moved to ezgingerbread. I'm not actually finding it that slow with the ram hack. I literally flashed it about 15 minutes ago, and this was sent using it. By the way, I found that It only really worked for the rom i had included the name of in the xml file. I'm working on bringing holo to gingerbread as we speak though....
new rom for me too

Oh, you just flashed ezginger while me I also flashed a few moments ago this new rom I newly discovered also a froyo rom its pre-themed ICS rom named froyo cream sandwich I forgot who post this but its nice superb, Im now testing it.
Send me a link, that sounds awesome! However, is it compatible with the ezterry ram hack?
Yes it is, its themed by darinx (probably butchered his name) there are two ROMs actually, one based off froyo by Laszlo and one of dream team froyo, two of the better froyo builds for the dream
Check the dev threads and youll find it within the first few pages
Also andisa (probably butchered his name too) made a great ICS theamed version of ezgingerbread that all includes some additional tweeks, I don't believe he ever created an xda thread but I can find you the link if your interested

If you could post the link to the ezgingerbread version, that would be excellent. I'm not quite ready to give up gingerbread, as it is working great even with live wallpapers.
Sent from my friend's kindle fire HD (sorry, it's just that I love typing on this thing, such smooth glass, light design, but alas, it's not for me, nexus 5 here I come.....)

DREAMWAVE sorry for the late reply, here is the complete link for that rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568486
Just want to ask what was the things you did to make G1 still great even with live wallpapers under the gingerbread version?? heheh,,,thanks in advance,,,
what I did to speed it up was remove some apps that were running in the background, such as dialer, which was taking up a solid 7mb of ram all the time. I now have a pretty consistent 42mb of ram while at my launcher, adw ex. While it won't beat any phone at a benchmark, it will run quite smoothly while flipping between launcher pages. Try using swap and a task killer, I am using smart ram booster and have the widget situated over the clock on the statusbar for whenever I want a quick boost in speed.
