No lockscreen or power button options - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I just got my T-Mobile Galaxy S II replaced today and when i turned it on for the first time, i noticed that it had no lockscreen, and no power button options. Instead, when u click the power button, it just shuts off the phone without warning. I am unrooted, nor have i ever been rooted on this phone. However i did take the SD card from my old rooted phone and put it in this one.. So maybe the rooted files have something to do with it. Im still not sure. If anyone has an answer it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you do a master reset without the SD card present in the device (keep it out of the device), do you still experience the issue?

Umm i will try that. But i have to backup everything first. Ill get back to you later on that

i have seen this happen on an SII when the efs folder gets deleted from the root directory.
the phone you got as a replacement must have been used before and the original owner had removed this folder.
it contains "as far as i've read" very important files that the phone needs and for some reason are not replaced even after a factory reset.
get another one if you can

Dang, this is my second replacement! I guess its onto the third.. Thanks though!

Soft Keys

I turned on my inc2 this morning, and I noticed my soft keys were gone. On this phone, there is no outline of them, so I'm just having to guess where they are. Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

Try restarting the phone. Or do a soft reset

sounds like it's a hardware issue, I would send for a replacement, or bring it to Verizon.
I mean besides flashing a known ROM with working lights I don't know what you mean by "fix" you can do.. and If you aren't rooted.. def bring it to Verizon..
Yeah just take it to Verizon. It's your best bet

Please, hard reboot your phone!

I believe that once you've done your first hard reboot on this phone the UI becomes permanently jumpy/choppy/laggy. Anyone?

every HTC / Samsung phone after restart, it takes them at least a good 1~2 minute to settle down

i'll test that as soon as mine arrives next week, until then i can't verify much
No lag here after 2 reboots. One of which was pulling the battery after turning the phone off to get the serial number.

yeah, i remember you did that for the other guy, that was looking for the battery part number
By hard reboot I mean VolUp+Power. I'm not talking about powering off the phone.

that's technically a factory / ROM reset back to default
Exactly my point. It should be stutter free by default, right?

Why would you do that anyways??

Dude, I just spent the last two days getting the phone setup the way I want it...
When we get root and I can create a nandroid backup I'll try a factory reset

I have hard reset and factory reset my device at least 6 times without issue really. I had to do it the first time since I tried to port over 26000 texts it didn't seem to like that too much =)

Dude, it's different from Factory Data Reset. It doesn't erase affect your setup. Ok. How about a simple reboot - just by holding power button. Can you do that and tell me what happens?

My routine to make it relatively smooth: Power Off / Power on while holding VolUp+Power and waiting for it to vibrate a couple of times / Turn off display animations / Turn off wallpaper scrolling.

When you hard reboot it actually factory resets the data the reason its lagging cause its reinstalling all the Bloatware Tmobile put on it. So you need at least 5-7 minutes.
Ive already done a hard reset on my phone after receiving it and the reason was i had a issue with music on my sd card. I dont see the lag you speak of. If its persistent then get it replaced. I have no issues as of yet with the phone and its running great. My only slight issue is battery but that is most likely due to bloat.

Have done plenty of normal reboots via the power button (power off then power on) and pulling the battery. Mine is still quite a bit more snappy than the Vibrant it replaced.
Can somebody smash their phone for me and let me know if its damaged after? It seems all phones are damaged after they're smashed.
Seriously op, if you know it messes up the phone, why ask others to do it? Why would anybody do that anyways? Seems pointless.

I've smashed mine several times, one of which was even a sledgehammer dropped from a 3-story building right onto the glass. no damage here, it's actually less damaged than my MT4G was fresh out of the box
Sorry, just had to post the other side of things too lol

[Q] Where did my lockscreen go?!

When I was using my phone today, I noticed that a long press on the power button was shutting down the phone instead of bringing up the menu. Then, I realized that I had also lost my lock screen, which I really hadn't noticed because I don't use the pattern lock. Turns out, even if I enabled the pattern lock, password, or PIN, using the power button still took the phone straight into the home screen.
I don't know if it was an bug in a random app, malware, or what... I spent a lot of time searching for an answer on what might have caused it, but didn't find anything really helpful. I started deleting all my recent apps, but couldn't get the lock screen back, so I ended up restoring the phone to factory settings and starting from scratch.
The only reason I'm posting about it is that I'm not entirely sure what caused it... I'm debating the possibility that it could it could be a touchwiz bug. Anyone else ever run into this?

Yes, its a known bug. I just ran into the bug today and I refuse to do a factory reset to fix the issue since its just gonna happen again. Samsung should be able to fix it with a simple software update.

No, so far the only way known to temporarily fix the issue is to do a master reset.

Ah, that would explain it... I was tearing out my hair trying to figure out what I had done. Funny thing is, I don't even *like* having a lock screen. I was just bothered by the fact something was wrong...
How did you find out that it's a known bug? I must have been phrasing my search poorly, because I couldn't find squat about the issue.
Still, whether I like the screen lock or not, I think this is a pretty decent security bug, considering it removes the ability to lock the phone...

I know because I seen it under "list of known issues". If you scroll down a few post you'll find it. The downside to not having a lockscreen is that if you receive a text message your phone will automatically unlock and you may accidentally dial someone if the phone is in your pocket.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH THE LOCKSCREEN ISSUE I ADVISE USING A 3RD PARTY LOCKSCREEN. I AM CURRENTLY USING "AGILE LOCKSCREEN" (WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN THE ANDROID MARKET). I AM USING THE PRO VERSION, BUT THE FREE ONE WILL DO THE JOB ALSO.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Mine's gone too.... Now that we have root I've a nandroid backup which I believe still had the lockscreen and will try restoring from that. If that doesn't work then I guess I'll do a master reset and restore from Titanium Backup. Hopefully Clockwork Recovery will survive the master reset...
I thought that was just me yesterday so I did a master reset

I was thinking the complete opposite. I installed ripple lock and that's when i started having the problem. Uninstalling didn't help. As soon as i uninstalled and a factory reset, haven't had any issues since.

No, its definitely a software bug. I don't advise doing a master reset because the issue will continue to happen.

For people having issues of making calls/etc. when the screen unlocks:
Just put the phone in your pocket with the screen facing AWAY from your body.
I had this happen immediately after using the *#0*# test screen, I'm blaming that

this sounds like a bug
it shouldn't need that, as in the lock screen shouldn't even dissapear
i'll suggest everyone experiencing this bug to report it directly to samsung, so they can fix it

Sounds like some corrupt data somewhere. If it were me, I'd do a clean wipe and reflash.
wipe data, partition cache and dalvik cache. flash the stock rom.
Ok will do . Lets hope its not a defective phone

I had a similar issue with one of my phones.. It ended up being a defective phone, and this was after it was rooted.. My wife's phone also rooted never had a issue.. If you feel it is defective after trying the above, flash back to full stock, and return it. Tell Sprint you are invoking your Samsung Warranty.. Sprint will always try to get you to use your insurance, which is bullpoop..
Phone is outside the return period so either it gets replaced by samsung or Sprint

If you have a SD Card - you might want to remove it to see if that helps as well. borked sd cards can cause the phone to act rather weird. I hope its just a simple fix.

Try just reformatting your sdcard if you have one: back it up to your computer, format your sd, then restore all your files

[Q] Please help. Phone in boot cycle and unable to solve

Hi,
I am using GNex with CM10.1.2 for past few months. A few months ago i noticed it suddenly reboots on using many applications simultaneously, but used to function normally when rebooted. One morning on connecting it to my home's wi-fi (same as everyday), it rebooted and went into a reboot cycle. It switches on for about 7 seconds and reboots again. When on during that time, i changed my screen lock from a pattern to slide, but the change seemed to be undone after the reboot. I flashed my phone, did a hard reset, factory wipe but the problem persisted. A friend tried changing the recovery as well, but the problem still persists. Tried to get help from some technicians, but no 1 could help. Please help me out.
Thanks
After you did a reset, all your apps and data were still there?
