Dev starting point? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, just wanted to get some advice from the devs around here on where to start with Rom and kernel development. I love flashing new roms and tweaking my play and transformer but I'd also love to know how it works and do some work myself. My question is where do I start?

ICS rom confusion.

I'm wondering what the best ics rom for my unlocked R800x is. The reason I ask is because there are too many ics roms and kernals out there and it kinda feels like I'm trying to find a needle in a 1000 hectare wide field piled 10 miles high with hay. I understand that best is a subjective term so perhaps it would be nice if someone were to mention the pros and cons of the different ICS roms so users which are confused like me can make an informed decision. Links are always good and I do know how to flash roms and kernals to my phone so you don't need to go into detail about that. I thank everyone in advance.

AOKP runs the best. 2 slight issues are the game pad (certain games) and Panorama camera

The fastest ICS ROM is KeiranFTW's PlAyOSP with SuperCharger V6

I want to make a JellyBean rom!

There is a nandroid dump floating around and there are already custom roms out for other phones.
What would I have to do to convert the nandroid dump or a rom for another phone to our phones?
Could I use a 4.0 kernel in a 4.1 rom?
Also, if I flash a bad rom, I can still get into recovery and restore a good one, right?
Im new to this, but I would really like to contribute to this and maybe get a project started.
If anyone with some more experience could help answer any of my questions that would be great.

What section do you think I should post this in?
I want to make a rom for the Incredible 2, so I thought this would be the best place to post.
Well this is a question, so the Q&A section.

Port the dump to our phone. Install the port if you can. Flash one of aeros ICS kernals one top of that. And if it boots, you have started a project. If not......... it was worth a try.
Could brick your phone, but if you wanted to start somthing this would be my best guess.

Development is for roms, not talk or asking to make one.
I'll move this to general
if you have never made a stock rom before, let alone ported a rom...and if you arent familiar w/ modding the ramdisk and hacking up jars/apks and what libs do what......
then dont bother
(this isnt me being a jerk, just pointing out you have to walk before you can run a marathon)

(Attempt) Evervolv Port (4.2)

Hello guys, I am attempting to release a ROM that I am porting from the Incredible 2 to the Incredible, but I am unable to post both in the Development section, and on Goo.im.
So, I am here, in the General Section, letting you guys know about the port, and to get some feedback. Does the community want this ROM? Anything you guys want in particular?
Reserved
Reserved just in case.
Not to be rude or anything... but we already have evervolv

Yep Tiny is the Maintainer I think
Oh dang I just found it too, well I guess it's pointless, Tiny did a good job with porting cm10.1.
I could give some love to the LG Lucid, they have no development whatsoever.

Actually, I was working on the evervolv port.
Not to be mean but the incredible is an officially supported device on evervolv and it was fairly simple to get it running once the base work of evervolv was done. I appreciate the effort trying to help out.

MIUI on Verizon HTC One :victory:

Hey All,
I had asked a question in the Q&A forum regarding porting MIUI, and santod040 was gracious enough to offer his expertise and port this ROM to our phones. However, he would like to see if there is any interest in this ROM. So I wanted to start a simple poll to convince him to port it over for us.
Thanks
Yes absolutely! I want this so badly and he does amazing work! I'm on his nusense rom

Yessss! Yes yes yes! Oh.. and yes! I've been waiting for this to come out since the day I rooted my baby. Please make this happen! I can beta test if need be
I'd love to get MIUI on this phone. One of my favorite ROMs of all time. Love the clean interface as well as the many theming options.
Hope you can pull through, santod040!
MIUI would be nice on this hardware!
Alright guys, I am no dev but I attempted to port over MIUI to our phone. It booted up just fine the only problem is com.android.phone keeps crashing. That may have something to do with build.prop settings or, maybe we need to do something more to the com.android.phone package.
Could someone enlighten me please?
Thanks

Best I can say is it takes quite a bit of work to make it stable.
I have it very far along already.
My suggestion is to just wait if you're not familiar with smali code and porting in general.
Not saying not to try, just letting you know it's pretty much done...

LOL thank you very much sir! I was just trying to see what it takes to get something ported. I was just about to follow a porting guide for the smali coding, pretty sure wouldn't have gotten very far.
BUT THANK YOU so much, great to hear that you are working on it! Take you time. :victory:

Yes! Heavens do exist!
So I know that asking for ETAs are deeply forbidden and looked down upon... but do we know if this will be out before christmas or not?

Ur ROM ? Why ? Would u recom.?

So I been using cleanrom from the beginning of 4.4.2 update I find it really amazing piece of work and it is really hard for me to change it. I am a bit lazy to check out the new Roms to tell the truth that's the only ROM so far I have tried on that device been addicted as all of us to room flashing in g4 and get bored with that.
Do I would like to ask you to write ur
ROM version
Reason for using that specific ROM
Would u recommend it
If not lazy ur setup with kernel
Any issues u have with that rom and wish to change it.
Mine so far
CleanROM 2.6
Absolutely no issues have not tried so far other Roms bit that is amazing
Absolutely recommend for using as a daily ROM
Ex 2.6 no of no oc close to stock as possible performance if phenomenal
NP issue the only thing I wish to have is continue work of that ROM bit it is stopped so I wish to stay updated (I know its late but....) And try other Roms if better.

I've been using paranoid android 4.0 w/Franco kernel for the past few months. The 1st rom I tried was cleanrom and it was very good too.

That is the beauty of Nexus devices - flashing a new ROM whenever the urge strikes you is a trivial matter, it is pretty hard to brick a Nexus barring hardware issues. Flash em all and see what you like best, or just gut the stock ROM and mod it to meet your needs and preferences.
And you can use multiRom to flash and boot multiple roms
