It doesn't matter. Backups should be working fine when CWM complains about sd-ext. Stock ROMs don't support external partitions on SD card anyway.

With custom kernel they do
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium
If you install custom kernel it isn't stock ROM stricktly speaking
"Stock" means "what comes from publisher", and I think neither Samsung nor cellular operators released any "custom kernels" with SD-ext support.

Hello, I tried out the new CM9 Beta 3 on my Gio, but before I flashed it, i've made a backup with CWM. Now after flashing, I've decided to switch back to my old backup, now I get an error while restoring:
"failed on /dev/block/stl12"
I have CWM v5.0.2.7 rfs + ext4 installed.
Please, can someone help?
I'm not sure, but the rfs+ext4 CWM should only work on rfs. If you're using CM, then you should've installed ext4 only CWM. I may be wrong.

You need to use CWM(ext4+RFS) with any stock or stock based ROM. Unless it has been converted to work with Ext4 partitions, but this would be stated by the developer.
Same issue
Ok threat not closed I see.
Same issue:
Samsung Gio,CWM-based recovery 5.0.2.7
Installed CWM (maybe another version??), backed up, Installed CM9, then 7.
Need contacts, were not synced with google.
Try to recorver backup and get the Error while formatting /System!
failed on /dev/block/stl12
please provide help.
I have Clockwordmod Recovery installed on my GSII (T989). If I do a full backup, and then flash a custom ROM/Kernel...can I just do a complete full restore if I don't like it (from the backup I made)?
Thanks!
Well there is no cyanogen recovery so that's probably why no one is replying fyi.

So I don't have to worry about losing anything? Once I restore, it will be like I never changed anything? (Almost like an image backup of a computer)?

No i wouldnt suggest doing that when u make a back up in cwm you making a backup of that rom! If your worried about your data use either
Titanium backup or
MyBackup Pro

umm...I thought CWM recovery backed up everything...including data (excluding microSD card).
So, if I restore it, it restores the original Kernel and ROM? Is that correct?
If something goes wrong, while flashing new kernels/ROMS, I can boot into recovery and just restore?
I'm already rooted, I just want to be sure before I start messing with my device.
Thaks!

you are correct the Nandroid backup built into the CWM recovery will back up everything on your phone as it is. including any ext partition on your external SD card. (will not backup your FAT partition where your normal downloads and pictures go, as this is where the backups are stored) but your ROM, all apps and their data and anything on your EXT partition (if you have one) will be backed up.
i suggest copying the clockworkmod backup folder to your computer before flashing anything else. just in case it messes up your SD card somehow.
doing the full restore will automatically restore ROM apps and data as they were when you backed up. feel free to flash as many roms as you want, just make sure to keep your backup safe. and to wipe all data in between roms as usual.
although titanium backup is amazing. and will backup apps and their data while booted inside your rom. its amazing, check it out.
Cwm backs up everthing including rom, kernel, and data. When you restore your backup it will restore your phone the way it was the moment that you backed it up.

I have TB Pro...are you saying it will back all of my apps/data up, and I can just restore it from within my new ROM?
Correct. Just use caution when trying to restore system apps.
Good.Luck!

Dude don't sorry so much!!! Super Noob!!! JK! Well not really you are never going to want stock again...just carefully flash your desired ROM.. use TB to restore all of your apps and their data. Do a nandroid back up of your current rom then one of your favorite roms after you set it up to you liking.

Hi, I want to ask you, if there is any way to backup whole rom without flashing new clockwork mod?
1) How do I backup?
2) How can I restore it?
Yes, but you do need to be rooted. Have a look at this thread.
Thanks, but I can't see here the answer for my two questions. It's not problem to be rooted, but I don't know, how to make full ROM backup before factory reset and flashing new ROM.

Except for backing up your stock recovery, everything else should ideally be done in CWM.
You'll get Nandroid backup which is a lot simpler to use than the dd command I explain in that other thread.

So, I flashed CWM a few minutes ago, but when I wanna make there backup, it's starting, but then it writes something like: Can't mount... I have to have ext4 partition on my sd card?
No, you don't have to repartition your SD.
What firmware do you want to backup? CWM won't work for 2.2.x AFAIK.

This question has been answered by the second post, to keep things short if you want to flash a rom you need to mount /preload and /data from within CWM
Hello, sorry if there is another thread like this.
I tried to install Lite Rom v2.8 on my GT-I8160
I am not really a beginner (i have a HTC myself) but the information on the rom thread is kinda... not available ^^''
The GT-I8160 is running 4.1.2 I8160XXMG2 (stock kernel and rooted) with CWM6 on the external SD card (no clue why it doesn't permanently install itself, i guess it has to do with the fact that the phone is running a stock kernel?) i tried to install the rom within CWM (install zip from SD card) but it is stuck on repeating the boot animation ._. it works after recovering the backup though. Does someone know what i did wrong?
I think you didn't mount preload. Try to flash Lite Rom 2.8 again and in Cwm mount system, preload and data before flashing the Rom.
Tell me if it worked

Sounds odd, it's not hard to tell the updater-script to mount preload as well, instead of having to do it manually
Anyways, our system space is limited, so a lot of the apps are installed in preload/symlink/system/app first and then symlinked from system/app.
i'm bored of CM rom 'cause 4.4 is not ready yet and i prefer 4.3 stock vs CM based, so i will flash the stock one... how i... or what i must uncheck to prevent delete my files.. i haven't SD card now.. =/
so... i must....
thanks for your help...
If you're on any CM based rom and want to go back to Stock (especially to an earlier Android version) you need to wipe everything in order to work correctly.
Flash via flashtool and just leave everything checked as is.

There is one more option. You can backup using moborobo, but I'm not sure if it creates backup for app data's

you should be able to choose to wipe your data partition without wiping the Internal Storage... (should be one of the options on your recovery... which recovery are you running?)

If you backed up using cwm, only the app "Rom manager" will allow you to see your backups. And you are only able to locate and transfer them to your PC if you have the paid version of Rom Manager. If you want to go back to stock using flashtool, unfortunately you will lose your files as a SD card wipe is mandatory thru flash tool.

Well, if he's using a PC to do this, he should be able to also mount the drive and copy everything off... (if he's running CWM, he can mount it as a USB drive and not deal with the MTP method of access...)
