This information is not new or unique.. but I have not seen it mentioned in our sub-forums.
For the few WiMax faithfuls.. this allows you to toggle WiMax 4G on/off even in Airplane Mode.. just how WiFi is treated. I believe HTC devices may do this by default.. but Samsung chooses to disable WiMax when Airplane Mode is enabled. It makes sense.. it saves battery.. and if you're on an airplane you certainly won't be using WiMax BUT for those (few?) times when you just need internet but want to spare your battery by disabling the CDMA radio.. this is how.
How-To:
edit the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file on your phone. One method would be to use Root Explorer to navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db and then open it with the SQLite Editor app from Market(Play?). In settings.db you can navigate to system > airplane_mode_radios and edit the "value" field. Remove whatever radio you do not want disabled by Airplane Mode. Example: By default your value field may say "cell,wimax,bluetooth"... by deleting wimax it will no longer shut off during Airplane Mode. I personally only have "cell" set to turn off. I'd rather manually enable/disable the other radios.

So again... why even do this? well if you're in an area with wimax and no wifi but don't plan on making a bunch of calls.. why not disable CDMA? Yes, SMS will also stop.. BUT if you use Google Voice(which you should) all SMS goes over data anyway. And set up a SIP account or use the Groove IP app in Market to make/receive free calls over data as well.
This is not for everyone!! There will only be a small group of people that could probably make use of this. This is for those people
Easy Mode(aren't you glad you kept reading?):
Get the Airplane Mode Modifier App from Market which makes the settings.db file edit for you by simply checking/unchecking some boxes.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wparam.airsettings
Notes:
While using 4G during Airplane Mode.. the 4G icon may NOT show up.. but the signal bar displayed is your WiMax signal.. NOT CDMA! You can see this by going to Settings > About Phone > Status and seeing the service state.. off. Since you now may be using your device differently, you may want to change the WiMax timeout and signal settings. See my sig for wimax links for editing that stuff. And here's a CM9 tip.. since you can't do ##DATA# > View > WiMAX > MSL(it crashes) you can use Any Cut app from Market to make a shortcut to WIMAX_CFG to get to those advanced "Extensions" settings.
TIP!
RyleyinSTL has reminded us that GPS can be used in airplane mode by using the QPST Service Programming tool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442666
Hope this helps someone else besides me
with the above settings and the wimax link in my sig.. you could technically have ONLY a clearwire account.. disable the CDMA radio.. setup google voice/groove ip.. and have a cell phone with no monthly bill.. other than what you are already paying cleawire
toggle between wimax/wifi for all call/sms. good times.
Definitely an interesting find.
Thank you!

I'm assuming there's still no fix for having wimax to stay on all the time rather than sleeping whenever the screen turns off?
Thanks autoprime!

the best you can do is go to the wimax extensions settings and set idletimeout to 300. it will still sleep.. but obv less...
even when the screen is off.. the phone does seem to wake up every now n then.. at least mine does on cm9.. could even be a wakelock bug for all i know(although battery performance has been good!). last night i set my phone to wimax only and woke up with all my latest emails and messages. i've certainly noticed wimax off after the screens been off for a bit though. i've seen the grooveip icon turn from red to green as i turn the screen back on. so i will say... this is not a perfect system.
if i find some extra tweaks.. ill keep everyone posted. there may be a way to manually enter a higher idletimeout number.. but the firmware may not even recognize the higher value etc etc.. we shall see. i will say tho.. wimax on 100% of the time = dead battery pretty quickly, unfortunately, but i will still try to find a way around it.
You're the best

So this is something i have tested working myself. I DO NOT recommend this for everyone simply because you can severely mess up your phone and it's wireless connections.
In a nut shell what this allows you to do is utilize your phones built in 3g mobile hot spot and tethering application without paying the extra $20 a month. The legality of this is questionable so use it at your own risk.
What you need:
Samsung drivers(you can find these)
QPST software download it here
1. Install the samsung driver for our phone, as well as the QPST software
2. Place your phone in modem mode(settings, wireless, enable dial up)
3. Plug in your phone and allow all drivers and everything to install.
4. Load up QPST configuration
5. Navigate to the tab that says ports and select "Add New Port"(if all is well you should have one that says something about usb, or anything about your phone)
6. Once the device is added go to the top menu bar, select "Start Clients" and then "Service Programming"
7. Next select "OK" to the device in the box.
Now for the tricky things where you MUST be careful!
8. at the bottom of this box select "Read from Phone"
9. If the password in the box is not "000000"(six zeros) type it in and click OK.
10. You now want to tab over on the top until you see the tab that says "M. IP" select this.
11. Select Profile 0(it will be the very first one on the top) and select "Edit..."
12. You now should Have two input boxes the first one labled "NAI" and the second "Tethered NAI"
13. Under "Tethered NAI" it should say something similar to "[email protected]" (the X's refer to your personal number)
14. You need to edit this so that it no longer has "dun" in it,
"[email protected]"
15. You should now have NAI and Tethered NAI as the same thing. Now click OK and finally "Write to phone"(located in the bottom left). Your phone will reboot its self.
16. Upon first boot you need to go back into settings, wireless, and disable dial up networking. (first time i did this i got a force close with gapps, but did not cause any issues)
If you followed this exactly, you should now have 3g mobile hotspot
I must warn you however, if you reprogram your phone via *228 this will go away! so it will have to be performed again.
Enjoy!
Is this continuum specific? I've guy a buddy with a Samsung showcase that is very interested.
it should be able to work on most phones. I modified this from a samsung fascinate guide and wrote more detailed instructions, however it should work for most android devices.
ah not to rain on your parade but wouldnt it be easier to just use googles wireles tether 3.0 above and select samsung facinate softap mode pretty much anything will pick that up.
Perhaps it would be easier, but it adds extra bloat and just isn't as good as using the original..
Imagine, you want to tether via wireless or wired.. well you simply go into your drawer and select 3g mobile hotspot... So much easier than downloading an app that you are either limited to non secure sights via a wired connection(pda net) or you have to use a tethering app that may or may not work properly, supports only an adhoc connection, has connectivity issues or is just a PITA to setup...
So why not use the app that is already in your app drawer that you can't get away.
Give it time and i'll have a patch for exactly this where you won't even need to perform these steps...
Oh, did i mention i can alter the amount of devices you can have connected at once via 3g wireless hotspot, and my speeds over 3g with my rom are coming in between 0.5MB-3MB per second (as of the tests i've done as of now. I just pulled 1.71mb/sec upload sucks, but i'm not uploading things using it. lol)

man i miss unlimited data lol thats what got me into trouble with sprint i pretty much forced my hero to roam of off verizon because theres a tower literaly half a mile from my house and apparantly using over 500mb of data roaming a day is a big no no lol. long story short they sent a letter and i got da boot. now i just have a dsl connection and the 2gig data plan so my bill is only about 10$ more than on sprint.
the moral of this story is becarefull with this because verizon does know what your doing

The beauty of this modification is that the regular 3g uses the connection of [email protected]... When you connect up the 3g wireless hotspot it sets the connection to [email protected].. This is how they know you have tethering because verizon sets this connection as active. SOOO what this is actually doing is setting the tethering app to utulize the normal 3g connection. SOOO it looks as if you are simply using the normal 3g connection..
Another way to do this is to run the 3g hotspot and have a widget to turn on and off 3g. When you toggle the connection it sets the connection back to the normal 3g even though you have open 3ghotspot Thus allowing tethering.
I am testing this now and i just performed option 2 after *228 and it did not break tethering. In fact i am on it now. Time for option 1 test
The new wireless tether allows regular connections, not just ADHOC
I've done this before, not gonna lie... But I deemed it.... Eh... Not worth it also, a lot of people have issues with dropped signal after doing it But, it is nifty, no doubt I was messing around with qdxm and such since my original enV

Why are you asking this on a forum for a phone that isn't on sprint, and doesn't even have an equivalent? I would suggest checking your phones forum.
Does it matter what ROM you're on (odex/deodexed)?

I figured as much. Thanks for the speedy reply.
Well I tried this
But for some weird reason every time I trie to mod and restart the phone the parameters return to their original setting, Like I didn't do anything to change it.
Is there something wrong?
I used QPST and if I change the vrzw3g something to anything and restart the phone everything goes back to default...
Thanks for any help.....
If you can't get it working, I honestly wouldn't struggle with it anymore like I said, this is morally grey/illegal, has caused dropped signal for some fascinate users, can be tracked, and has a lot of good alternatives... Wifi tether is my favorite

Mine does that too, not just my phone but my Wireless hotspot too, (a AT&T Unite) I can keep the connection up by doing a "ping www.google.com -t" in the command line.
Yes, this will kill your battery, consider using bluetooth or USB tether.
Furthermore AT&Ts DNS servers suck use these
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Just put them in to your DNS settings in Windows.
This isn't an issue with your devices, its a AT&T issue from the looks of it. (I called AT&T and they tell me that the local tower is having issues so unless I continuously ping google I can't tether or use my hotspot for more than 20 minutes without getting DNS errors, Does it with any ROM I try, even my PlayStation Vita does it)
Sorry but my note 2 is bell variant and i'm on bell network in Canada. The only reason I'm using this forum is because AT&T has the same model unlike the other verizon and such.
So any other idea???
i also tried to set the hotspot auto turn off to always on and it seems to help a little. however every now and then i still get disconnection.

Did anything change when you continuously pinged Google?
I keep refreshing the page, enter new common websites such as MSN or yahoo and they all show nothing except DNS failed look up. I changed the bell apn to some tether apn bell offered but that didn't work. So now I reset the apn to have it look up the settings itself. Still having the issue..
I never had this issue until recengly like last two weeks. Iunno what could be the Cuz and I can't figure out is it my phone, rom, or laptop...
I seriously will pay someone if they can't help me fix this!
Thanks in advance to this wonderful community.

Disable your app and use ES File Explorer to hotspot. This can help to see if it is wifi app specific issue, or a common (phone setting, DNS...) problem.

When I am home, I am always on wifi connection. Never really get disconnected. Today I was looking over my bill and noticed that alot of times, I have like 10mb or 12mbs used, while I am still connected. Most of the time happens in the middle of the night when sleeping, but also sometimes during the evening when home.
Is this normal?
At first I thought I might be losing connection to wifi sometimes, but even if that happened, 10mbs? When sleeping? I doubt I am losing connection though
I hardly have any apps..
Any idea

I used to have this issue on my old phone when using Juice Defender. The app used to disconnect data when connected to wifi, but MMS uses data whether connected to Wifi or not. I'm not saying that you're using Juice Defender though, but my point is that you should check that your data is enabled through settings when connected to Wifi and trying to send MMS.
Let me know if you don't know how to wnable/disable data. If you're using a battery saver app, make sure that it isn't toggling data too.

If data is on, then try turning Airplane Mode on then off. Then try rebooting if you haven't already (many people rarely reboot their phones nowaday. Not really a need to anymore).
If those don't work, then I'm at a loss. Sorry.

Mine does the same thing when it's close to the router. I've gone into wifi advanced and turned everything off that could trigger it also turned smart switch off. When I have the phone away from the router it doesn't happen, just wondering if there's a proximity setting somewhere I haven't found yet.

That is something to consider, since we can't find anything in the standard settings. I'm staying in a motel and the router is relatively close in proximity, 50-60 feet, in a building next door. I've never known or heard of wifi being tied into a proximity sensor. I don't know what the advantage or necessity could possibly be. But, I'm not a phone engineer.

I'll look through some more setting and if I find anything I will post back here.
This was happening on my s7 edge and found found the xfinity app was the culprit.

No, this is simply do you want your device to scan for wifi networks. This is a standard option.
Thanks for trying. I can't find anything in settings, not in the Developer settings either.
It's bizarre because, as I mentioned, it auto connects when I'm at the motel.
I just checked in and I didn't use my phone for anything for about half an hour or more. I pick it up to use it and as I'm typing a text message I notice the wifi icon in the notification bar. So, it turned itself on when I got here. I went through all the settings and found nothing turned on or that is running in the background.
So, strange.

Do you have any apps that auto-connect such as tasker or something else that runs tasks based on time or location? Another thing is to check location-based apps that don't have turn on WiFi automatically when they need it to turn on.
Check out this article, which talks about how to check app permissions. I have my WiFi set to turn on when it comes close to my apartment and turn off the sound when I leave a geographic radius of my apartment. Even if my WiFi is off if my GPS locates that I'm within my apartment's radius, it turns on based on rules I set using MacroDroid.
It may just be an app that has the permission to turn on WiFi when it needs to connect or do SOMETHING with your phone.
PS, I'm making no promises, I'm just thinking Occam's Razor.
