Hello,
Apologies for asking this usually stupid question; normally I try all ROMs by myself and find out which one I like best, but this is form my wifey's WFS, so I can't do extensive testing...
Can someone tell me which ROM gives the best battery life and low memory footprint (available memory)?
Thanks in advance!

Btw, which are the MarvelC/MarvelCT devices? How do I know if I've got one of these? It's got a SIM so I assume it's a Marvel? (didn't even know there existed SIM-less devices!)

Boot into your bootloader. Do that by pressing volume up and power when phone is switched off. If it boots normally, disable fastboot in settings > power. It should say on the first line:
****** PVT SHIP S-ON / S-OFF RL
****** = MARVEL / MARVELC / MARVELCT
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S powered by CyanogenMod 7.2
Yup, it's a plain Marvel alright. Thanks again
I tried Cm7, wasn't impressed. Now I've been running jxmatteo v1.2 for 2 weeks & its truly amazing. Sense 3.5 runs sweet, rooted & deodexed, oh & with wifi running 24/7 I still get two days out of my battery. The stock rom that came with my fone wasn't even that good, got a day at best b4 I had to charge it. Honestly, try jxmatteo you won't be dissapointed

Thanks for the suggestion... battery sound sweet. But I'm not crazy about Sense (heck, even HTC themselves said it's become a pile of crap) to tell you the truth. How much memory have you got left after installing?
Thanks again!

Epic fail.
Ah yes, because derailing a thread is, like, totally mature and a flawless win! Rad, man!
Tsk...
I will "derail" any thread that adds clutter to the dev section. And promptly direct it to the proper section, where not only does it not clutter this place up, more people will also feel more inclined to help you.

Moving it to the appropriate place, fine.
Giving a note to me, fine.
Discussing how "fail it is, dude, LOL", because of how high and mighty one is, is not only immature but also makes things worse.
Oh, also, my comment was not directed to you, as you could have seen by the fact that I did, in fact, reply to your post directly and answered your question.
My honest mistake. I apologize.

These kind of questions (and also these kind of threads) aren't allowed on XDA as they have such a high chance of causing arguments/disputes.
As we all prefer different types of ROMs, different types of kernels and have such different usage of our devices, someone's answer can never really help us as everyone's will have a different opinion. You may even end up missing out on a great ROM purely due to the fact that others haven't mentioned it.
Therefore, I'll always suggest that you test ROMs out for yourself so that you can definitely be sure how suitable a particular ROM is for you
Also, for future reference, don't find a thread from almost 2 years ago and bump it up to the top of the forum.

Thread Moved to Q&A and Closed
As this thread wasn't noticed when it was first created, I've moved this over to Q&A (as it definitely doesn't belong in the development forum) and will have closed the thread as well as we don't allow this kind of thread on XDA.

So with the Atrix about to be released it has me thinking. Will the features of the "portable laptop" be able to be ported and included in an EVO rom? I mean we have this HDMI out that basically does nothing and this would be PERFECT. So how hard would it be? Would a bounty help push for development? I know I would pay to be able to use my EVO as a portable computer.

thanks Jacka$$. Considering it straddles the fence of being part of a rom and more of a technical question, it did not seem fitting to put it in the Q&A. Could this not be a ROM COMPONENT?
Mods feel free to lock or move. It will get no attention in the Q&A when it is really about a rom component.

That's a interesting topic but like the post above said it should be in Q&A and believe it or no there is developers checking those forums, I seen Calk posting in General and he is a developer and some others as well. Back to the topic the would be cool but at the same time I think too much for the evo for now I just wish we can get the new sense or gingerbread eatheir one would be good for the Evo

Can you rip toyota parts and throw em in a ford? For the most part, NO.
Just as you wouldnt be able to take moto stuff and put it into an HTC phone. Besides the atrix has hardware differences to allow that stuff.

1) It does NOT belong in the Development Thread.
2) Bounty Threads are 100% against xda rules.

You're welcome. I posted that for you because I figured you couldn't differentiate between questions and technical discussion.
Also, explain how this "straddles the fence" of being part of a ROM. I must have missed the part where you started porting this and writing code. My mistake.
No. You wouldn't. As great as software can be it can't make non-existent connections on the PCB board to appear out of no where.

There's room in the car, just throw the tire from the Toyota in the back seat.
But for the most part, no. Things like the launcher or moto apps most likely rely on frameworks only present in a rom built for the Atrix. You can't just rip frameworks from a totally different device, and slap it in another device and expect it to work.

Gets to flashing kernel and then produces error status of 7. I can't get passed the white screen

Well said is quite the understatement. Has anyone seriously tried doing searches on this site for stuff? Sometimes you do find what you're looking for fairly easily, other times you can't find a damn thing that should be readily available. And if you're in panic mode because you think you just bricked your phone, are you going to search this entire site for an answer that might not show up in your search results? Hell no, you'd probably just create a new thread begging for help.
If you can't contribute and only talk down to people, shut your ass up. No one needs that type of attitude here.

I have to disagree.
First and foremost, give a man a fish... teach a man to fish...
The post you quote seems entirely accurate. The OP could obviously use more research as the answers are available. A little time with google alone will usually lead me to what I seek right here on xda.
I feel that the majority of xda contributors are more than willing to help if you show some indication that you have exhausted all your resources in finding your own solution. Though I do understand that moments of panic occur when nothing seems to work but it is always best as well as more satisfying to try and work through it yourself.
This forum does have a Q and A section that would be perfectly suited to handle this thread. The development section really isn't the place. You will get more welcome responses over there as that is its purpose.
Finally, as a member of this forum, I appreciate that of all the posts in this thread, yours (and suilmagic) were the only post that really did anything to help the OP.

I understand you point and I agree 100% people need to research their problems on a search engine (including the one we have here built in XDA (very handy)) because the majority of time, it will appear right onthe first page if you type your problem correctly, I agree with you. However, some users rather act in a certain way which would describe them as "assholes" if you cant contribute one way or the other why even post at all? if you dont know then theres no need to post unnecessary things. Just dont post and OP will get the picture and look somewhere else.

I agree with this as well though I hesitate at the name calling as it is also unproductive.
I miss the old days when we were all figuring it out together and questions turned to discussions. With the wealth of knowledge that has been built since then I guess some are not as willing to help others work through the problems. I do believe that if this thread had landed in Q&A it would have, or at least should have, received better response.

Update on HTC G2 Crashed and Bricked
I followed the instructions posted on this site to try and recover my G2 to no avail. After hours with an Android Developer the apparent issue was with the phone's internal memory.
I recieved a replacement and all is good. I've flashed a number of 2.3 roms in addition to roms that have Sense, flashed a kernel or two with no problems.
I hope I don't re create the same condition that started this post. I'm not sure what I did to cause the issue in the fisrt place.
Thanks to all the people out there who tried their best to help.

im sure this has been posted a thousand fold, but i wanted to post one for the personalization of it. What would you say its the best overall kernel for cm7.2. im about to have a crack at using tiamat with it since it was my personal fav on my incredible. any suggestions?
I like aeroevans 8bfs kernel. His 8 cfs is good too but idk the difference really. His ics v9 kernel supposedly works with gingerbread but I haven't tried it
The v9 kernel works really well with cm7. I would really recommend using it. Battery life is much improved.

If you are sure its been asked, why didn't you search for it. Then the next thing is, test for yourself. Every phone responds different. I Dont understand what the problem is. He posted in the correct section, was polite and simply asked for our opinions. Kernels do change, with updates and whatnot while others get left behind. simply searching and grave digging an old thread doesnt really change anything. Just dont want this place to become a thread-prison.
As for the kernels, tiamat hasnt been updated for our phone in ages, a lot of stuff has changed for GB since their last update. JDK kernel is in the same boat. This leaves the various versions of Aero's kernel essentially, i'd go with .8bfs or the v9 ics kernel, which i'm currently using with no problems.

anyways thanks for all the tips ill try em all out. im currently testing out some sense kernels for great battery life any suggestions there?
I fully agree. When you get a new device you are not sure what is old and what are outdated mods and what is the newest thing sometimes. I agree we should search first. But I have had times where I search and google and still no answers. Then when I finally post a question there is usually someone making a refference about another kitty being killed. I came from the Droid X2 which the phone was crap and Motorola sucks A$$ for locking the phones down. However that forum was very friendly and eager to help out noobs. I do understand some of the questions asked are a little crazy and you can tell they did not search. But if you are pissed about someone posting just ignore it and let some other helpful person respond. And if they post in the wrong section the MR Highway will come get them!! He is awesome at that! Keep up the great work Mr Highway. Sorry just my .02 cents. Also as the noobs learn they help out other noobs and hopefully you respected devs can ignore these simple questions. The DX2 was my first phone and I had no idea what I was doing. With the help of the DX2 community I got up to speed and was able to help others. Look at my thanks count. One noob helping another. I asked plenty of questions when I first came on here had some helpful feedback and some smart remarks. Well needless to say I am now comfortable with flashing Roms,Kernel, radio and moving back and forth from AOSP,Sense, and ICS and I found all the fixes and work around ICS by reading the threads and not asking questions here. Just some food for thought.

Again, our phone lacks a large variety of kernels, however the few we have are solid (probably the reason we dont have 2000 of them xD)
The only kernel i've really used for sense is drellisdee's #21 kernel, it comes with all the usual cpu governors and is included in a lot of ext4 sense roms. It works on sense 2.1, 3.0 and 3.5 in my experience as well.
Hopefully that was of some help :s

This is the Problem I have right here.. so he knows it was most likely posted over and over and just said f it I don't want to look.

I Dont understand what the problem is. He posted in the correct section, was polite and simply asked for our opinions.

Yes, he did post this in the right section if it was just kernel and not ROM specific with CM7.2 why just question for AOSP or sense? And I wasn't rude in my response to him as far as him posting a question. I am irritated knowing that we have just recently had a lot of problems in this thread with people just simply asking questions they could've searched for and reposting the same thing 8,000,000 times (su, killall drmserver) ya that is familiar
Kernels do change, with updates and whatnot while others get left behind. simply searching and grave digging an old thread doesnt really change anything. Just dont want this place to become a thread-prison..

Thank god our device doesn't have many different ones to look into. Its not like its hard again to search kernel and see what shows up.

Its lack of wanting to put in any time with search and asking the same exact questions over and over that makes DEV's leave.

There were plenty of more posts to quote but I think I proved my point.

Im locking this, before it goes south, an in my eyes, that's what it's looking like.
Hey, since official thread was closed based on Shaky's request, I have opened new, unofficial one, so that there is no need to spam development threads where it does not belong to. There was starting some talk about Kernel 3.0, maybe some experienced ones can enlight this topic.
No offensive or dirty words, please.
To much smoke with no fire...
Not really sure that there will be something from it.
But let's wait and see.
Dafuq? Two threads plus development not enough?
all Shaky's threads are locked so not enough...
personaly i would say get the message... 3 threads locked. message recieved

come on, it was locked because of shaky was annoyed, but it does not mean community cannot talk about it...

now the community will talk about the same thing here, so now ur just continuing on the reason why they were locked.

LOL I clearly remember when Shaky appeared on the Desire forums before the device was bought, there was this guy from DHD forum who commented " Oh shaky you're now here! After shaking a lot and not baking anything in the DHD" .. hahaha.. I feel really sorry for all of you who kept saying"oh shaky plz do sense 4 for us and you're god and what not!" All rubbish..
What I find hard to understand that why would a dev never talk about what's working and what's not behind the scenes ??? Not even in dev forum? People stopped writing in dev as per his request.. what happened at the end ???
All bull****! I'm not saying that he can't do something, only he knows better, but the way people have been treated in his forums are disgusting.. it never happened in threads in the likes of leedroid or coolexe etc.. everyone was given a chance to express and be heard..
I feel these new so called dev are "noobs" than normal users the people are maintaining their threds

yes, I want them to talk about it, and omg, they were locked because Shaky wanted it, not moderators (except of some warnings in development thread). If it was because he did not want to read about it or any other reason, it does not matter, I just don't want this topic to die (when still some hope is alive, maybe).
Back to topic, in Droid Incredible forum I have read that PureMotive had some talk with Shaky and sbryan like 4 days ago and that guy sbryan is most probably looking into that audio issue... we will see
Conclusion : leave shaky alone, he's working hard for us and there is no need to make him under pression.
About this topic, mmmh ... too words, not enough acts ?
To me this thread looks like disrespect to shaky coz he closed two of them already clearly for a reason.
And now again will be the same everybody taking and nobody can actually provide even a simple logcat, you know how many tutorials with step by step explanations have been posted on xda lately for everything: porting ics, compiling kernel, compiling roms from source, kernel optimizations, modding, etc do why non of the talkatives take some time off their life and start working on porting sense 4 and/or kernel 3.0? Seriously this thread would be so much productive rather than waiting and pushing one person to the edge?m?
Does it make sense?
If I had time to waste for ungrateful users I'd work on this myself- however real life and work for now are more important to me.but I bet if any of you read the tutorials and got to know insides of android you could port it yourself. Even DK and Sandvold and Sebastian started like this by experimenting.

Good to see other people working on Sense 4.0 ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28222255&postcount=1447
When shaky was soliciting donations to buy his Desire you just had to check his history here at XDA to realize he is a prima donna that will probably let you down (if you chipped in for his phone). As the saying goes...he's all hat but no cattle. So I stayed well away.
Now, when laidbacknikez was doing the same (getting donations to buy a new Desire for developing) I did donate to him. He not only sent out a personal thank you note, he has delivered a fantastic ROM in spades...and I would bet he will give us Jellybean a well.

thanks for finding it, another slice of hope (and one of the reasons why I opened this thread, hope people won't now spam Aurora thread with silly questions for ETA [like one already did ])

everyone should just LEAVE IT unless they are going to help out with something productive.
if you compared the Nexus One thread and the Desire thread for the same shaky dev thread and the nexus one had like 3 pages, while the desire had about 100 in a short space of time.
I know people are excited and stuff but try and keep it to yourselves unless you have a bugreport or something useful to contribute.
in the meantime enjoy Gingerbread or ICS AOSP on your desire.

i agree, i onced used aurora rom but never really checked the thread after that. so yeah it was a good find and im glad that sense 4 is being worked on BUT now there is gona be 200+ atleast more people who are gona read this thread and click the link and its gona eventually lead to useless posts and comments just like shakys threads. i could be and hope im wrong but thats what i think.

One more thing I don't understand, if this is called 'FORUM' it's made to be written in it, so why some of us think that it shouldn't?

Let it go man. If we can't make people stop creating threads to discuss what is the best rom of them all, we can't stop this thread too. :silly:
