Hi everyone (and sorry for my bad english) !
Since some days my GSM Galaxy Nexus is anoying me with a problem I can't understand.
At random moments, my GN thinks he is charging but he isn't even plugged !
The indicator in the notification bar shows the battery is in charge and all the phone believes he is charging.
Other problème, the charging indicatore comes and goes again and again and again, so the scree goes on everytime the GN is "plugged in".
My battery goes down at the speed of light this way ...
I tried to wipe, uninstall potential apps that could cause the issue, changing rom, changing kernel ... It still happening but not every time. Often it comes when the battery is under 50% or arround. I also have battery drops when I reboot the phone, like if the battery wasn't correctly calibrate ...
If I reboot the phone, the problem still here, if i get the battery off and then put it back and reboot the phone it works normaly ... for a indeterminate time ...
This problem make me crazy, is anyone got a solution ?
Thanks for all.
Anyone can help please ?
I would definitely demand a replacement battery. For me it seems like the battery is broken, therefore it's a warranty issue. If the problem still exists, it must be the hardware of the phone itself. I don't think it's a software problem, since you wiped, changed rom and even the kernel.
So demand a replacement of the battery!
Thanks for your answer ! I'll try this but I don't think samsung customer support will send me a replacement battery like that, they will ask me to send back the phone I think.
I recently had the same issue... here's what fixed it for me. I took the battery out and left the phone plugged into the outlet. Let it sit. I then installed the battery and let it finish its charge while the phone was off. I then took the battery out, unplugged the charger from the phone, and reinserted battery. Power on, VOILA! Mine was back to normal. Hope this helps.
Thanks for helping ! I'll try this
I just saw that I'm not alone in this case : http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=23789
This issue is considerated as a medium priority, I hope for a fix !
I have the exact same problem, and have also commented on the issue at code.google.com. I have also tried "everything". Changed ROM, kernel, wiped battery stat, even let it fully charge while off. Still the same problem where it show as charging in notification bar when unplugged.. and when it have drained to below 50% or so, it start to flicked between charging and not-charging and drains even faster.
After checking CPU Spy it tells me that the phone never goes to sleep, this causes the battery to only last about 12-14 hours by itself..
I have also tryed to open the phone and clean the connector, but it did not fix it. One thing that is strange, is if I pry a toot stick or similar in the micro-usb-connector to press the connector plate (inside the micro-usb-connector) down with the phone faced up, it actually stops to flicker and stays not-charging.

Same problem here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379478 and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21031287#post21031287
I have the same problem, and it make my crazy.
I bought the phone about month ago and this problem came in the second week.
I plugged my phone up to my car charger omw home for lunch and the stupid charging issue started to happen all over again... I had to do the whole thing over again. Remove otterbox, back shell, battery, and put it all back together. I'm really trying to avoid swapping the phone out with verizon. With the way it's looking, I'm about to call and hassle a VZW CSR and get me an instant swap in the morning. This is unacceptable SAMSUNG. Bad thing is, it must be common with Smsg phones, as I found 5 other devices of theirs that seemed to have the same problem Nexus S and Fascinate being two of them.
Same issue here as well, with the battery icon showing the charging bolt despite not being plugged in.
This will happen when the phone is not in use, and ill notice the screen flash on for a moment.
I tried the solution offered in this thread, only to have the symptom return just hours after powering the phone back on, and w/o being plugged back into another charger.
Same here, the solution didn't work for me but push the conector down with a toothpick seems to work for me ... for the moment.
So it seems to be a hardware problem of the device !
I have now ordered a new USB connector board to see if that fixes it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150713366355
Will report back.

When did you buy your phones? This could be a problem on early batches.
Could you see what part number you have on the actual USB connector?
I see that on this replacement board the number is 1H13D, while my number is 1J10F.
The replacement board with 1H13D written on it: http://www.globaldirectparts.com/v/vspfiles/photos/SMSNG6111630-6.jpg

Hey, strong work! You might diagnose this thing before Google does. Keep us posted.
I'm experiencing this too, I did have it go away for about a week, but now it's back. I"m not looking forward to RMAing it, because I ordered it from the US and I'm in the Caribbean. I'm hoping the USB board replacement will work - waiting to see the results.
So glad I finally found this thread....
This started happening to me Friday night. First thing I noticed was while I was out the battery symbol had the lightning bolt in it as if it was charging, but it wasn't.
Long story short, nothing I do is able to charge the phone, both while the phone is on and while the phone is off) and it's REALLY pissing me off. The only response I can get from the phone is when it's off, it keeps looping over the two battery animations and acts like it's charging, but it's really not.
In all my playing around with it I somehow got it to charge to 40% yesterday. The only thing I can say for certain was that the phone was plugged in while I was trying to boot it up and when it shut off I didn't see the battery charging animations so I left it alone for a little bit before I checked it out and was surprised to see it charged a bit.
Today I was able to have it happen again and got the battery to 60%. This time I Started from the bootloader and again, when it turned off, I didn't see the battery animation.
I was able to reproduce this again just now by going into the bootloader and just choosing the option to power it off. Will report back in a little while to let you know if it charged past 60% after doing that.
Edit: powering off from the bootloader did not charge the phone. I accidentally pulled the battery and it went from 60% to 37% when I turned it back on. I think there is something screwy with my battery. Does anyone know if the regular Verizon battery fits in the GSM version?
I've got at least a similar issue, but managed to get a fix working (at least for now). I've had the phone for about 2.5 hours now. I got it with around 50% charge, after 1.5 hours, it was at 24% so I went to charge it. Tried the included USB cable to my Windows 7 PC, it tried to install drivers, the install failed. The battery was labeled as still discharging and the unlock screen told me to charge the battery.
I proceeded to try the samsung charging head thing with the original cable in one outlet, then in two more - same result, no charging indicated. Tried with a brand new micro USB cable and had no results. Tried the other cable with the PC. I read around on the issue a bit and found this thread, since people were saying it could be software related, I figured I would power down the device and try again.
I powered down the phone while it was disconnected from USB. I then plugged it into the USB cable connected to my computer. My PC then recognized the device and installed the drivers correctly, the bolt over the battery icon appeared on the Galaxy Nexus's screen. I let the screen turn off then woke it again, the battery charging animation was going. I booted the device while connected to USB. Now in the OS it says the battery is charging and it was charging from about 42% - so I think the actual battery power was not being properly reported before the reboot and when the charging problems were happening.
I'm hoping this has set it to work, but if something else happens, I'll post here again.

I've had the phone for over a month now and never had any issues. I've been trying to plug into a Mac so drivers aren't an issue (I know from previous phones that in Windows the phone wouldn't charge until the right drivers were installed).
There's definitely something very wrong w/ the phone and I fear it's likely a hardware issue, as even when the phone is off it won't charge (but acts kind of like it is).
Right now the only surefire way for me to charge my phone is let it die all the way down and keep trying to boot it up until it dies during a boot before the OS comes up (at which point it'll charge).
For what it's worth I fixed the phone on Monday. I stuck a wooden stir stick from work in the usb port and pushed down on the plate inside ever so slightly. I'd seen this suggestion from a few places online, but I was pretty skeptical. Well, much to my surprise it started charging!
I quickly got it back to it's stock state and re-locked the booloader in case I end up needing to send the phone back to Sammy if the problem happens again.
So far so good, but I've been very careful when plugging and unplugging the usb cord.
I think it's important to keep the OP's issue in mind, because I'm pretty sure there are two different issues here.
1)Many of us have an issue were the phone shows it's charging WHILE UNPLUGGED, causing the screen to flick on repeatedly. This may/may not be accompanied by a charging issues - in my case it isn't.
2)A second issue where owners have problems charging their phones (but never experience the charging while unplugged bug).
I think the intent of this thread is to track (1). I've never heard of the toothpick issue helping those experiencing (1).
How are people pushing the usb plate down, any pictures?
Hello,
This started about a month ago when my GSM i9250 Galaxy Nexus began not charging enough to reset the battery graph and has progressed to not charging past 0%. When OFF the charge icon will show up and the charging animation will appear when the power button is pressed. The animation shows empty all the time, I have left it off and charging for 40+ hours with no change. When ON it will show as charging for a short period (30sec to 10min) of time then either show as not charging or ask to be plugged in. Sometimes it will work (turn on) for short periods before dying. I have tried multiple cords, chargers, computers (as chargers), batteries all with no effect. Currently running stock ROM rooted and twrp2. Any thoughts, suggestions or questions welcomed.
Thank you
PS. I ask this after much searching here and on Google, if I have failed to find an obvious fix please proved a link or suggested search phrase.

Maybe your charging pins in the usb port got some dust, actually yesterday the same happened to me, but now i've used a needle to clean off the dust from the usb port and tried to push that metallictab present in the port downwards, now it has helped me. Try this and if it didn't work, then it MAY be a hardware issue.
I'm not an expert, just you my experience of this prob

Thanks, I will give that a try though I doubt it will make much difference as mine will not acknowledge a battery charged on an external charger.

OK, alcohol swab over shaved chopstick, no change. I followed with 2000 grit sandpaper and another alcohol swab still no change. Any other ideas?
Found an app than shows in phone/circuit voltage and reported charge percentage.
Shown as they come off of an external charger.
Battery_________mV_________%
Original 3647 0
Replacement 3673 0
These both look to be within normal limits for voltage,anyone have a clue, guess or hail-marry maybe as to what would make the charging system react as though both of these batteries were dead?
Thanks
PS. I have seen mention of a Clockworkmod charging bug and it is always followed with a "just search for it", I have searched both here and on Google and have not found anything. If someone could describe the cause, symptoms and a fix for this or provide a link to a description I will happily make a Wiki entry for it.
Today I wiped and formatted everything that had a button in twrp2 and reinstalled stock ROM (takju-jdq39) via the Nexus Root Kit and the phone charged to 14% before it stopped charging. It is turned off now still plugged in, hopefully I will wake to a fully charged phone tomorrow.
Little more info and more questions.
After messing with this over the week I now have 17% battery and some more questions. I tried playing with SL4A to access the system and got some confusing results.
Code:
batteryCheckPresent() = False
batteryGetHealth() = 2 - good
batteryGetLevel() = 17%
batteryGetPlugType() = 2 - power source is a USB port
batteryGetStatus() = 4 - not charging
batteryGetTechnology() = 'Li-ion'
batteryGetTemperature() = 290
batteryGetVoltage() = 3733mV
Can anyone posit a situation with a phone having a battery in good condition, at17% charge and attached to a charger where charging would not be the thing to do?
What is the deal with 'batteryCheckPresent() = False', has anyone used SL4A and seen this? Anyone willing to try, I will pass along the code, just install SL4A, PythonForAndroid, and run the script, report findings.
Again any thoughts, suggestions or questions welcomed.
Thank you

After multiple chargers, batteries, charging sub-boards and trip threw a re-flow oven it has been diagnosed as a bad power control chip. I hope that someone can benefit from this experience.
Gabe
I have had this problem for about 2 months now, and it seems like everything I do, never fixes the problem. When I was rooted, I was having fun tweaking, flashing roms, and mods, but then one day my battery percentage was low so I plug my phone in the charger with the stock charger and cable that came with my GS3. I wait, 5 minutes goes by and I check my GS3 again, and it has the same exact battery percentage it had when I was going to plug it in to charge. Never even increased one single bit. So I thought to myself, that's strange. I wait another 5 minutes, and it only goes up by 1 percent. I was thinking to myself what the *beep*! Now I left it that night to charge, and I wake up... HOORAY! 100% fully charged! I take it out of the charger and BOOM! it drains all the way down, to a low percentage, which I'm pretty sure was the same percentage I had when I went to charge it last night. Now I was pissed man, phew, I got so mad! I read all over XDA and Android forums, and it seems like I'm not the only person who has this problem. There was one thread with like 10 pages and counting. There were answers like, "just wipe battery stats", I wiped battery stats, the problem still persists. It still takes a very long time to charge and, once I immediately take it out of my charger it drains, to a very low percentage. So then people were saying "it's the cable, just use a different cable" I use a cable from a Pantech charger and I wait. It charged my GS3 just like the way it is supposed too. I'm thinking to myself, great it's back to normal charging state! Then another day I plug it in the Pantech charger and my GS3 doesn't even recognize, that it is charging, no lightning symbol on the battery pic thing on the status bar. I wait and there has been no increase, but actually a decrease of battery. Again I was like what the *beep*! So I use various different chargers and my GS3 doesn't even recognize any of them that they are charging, EXCEPT for the stock Samsung charger that came with the GS3 which takes a very long time to charge and once it's fully charged and I take it out, it immediately drains to a low percentage. So I switched batteries with a friend of mine who had a high percentage, and I booted into CWM, and I wiped data/factory reset I wiped dalvik cache, and cache partition, and I reflashed my ROM. No fix. Same Problem. So I try many different ROMS, and every ROM I try. No fix. Same Problem. Even the very stable ones which supposedly have not many problems. I thought unrooting and going back to stock firmware would work. That's exactly what I did and... No fix. Same Problem. I downgraded to ICS and... No Fix. Same Problem. I have tried everything that people on XDA and other forums have said would fix the problem, and the problem is still there and it seems like it's not going anywhere.
SORRY FOR THIS LONG THREAD.
PLEASE PRIVATE MESSAGE ME ANYTHING THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEMS OR ANSWER IN THIS THREAD.
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Hey guys:
I'm an IT tech and I'm really confused on this one. Started happening a week or 2 ago. I'd be charging my phone and it'd randomly cut out. I run Carbon ROM and have the notification light set to be a solid yellow when charging so I know if it's charging or not. It would happen very infrequently, but would cut out. I'd unplug and replug and it would be fine for the most part. It's gotten progressively worse. I was running NEAK kernel so I tried to go back to stock Carbon trinity kernel, same problem. The other day my phone would also randomly go in and out of "car mode" too which was weird. Currently, I have it plugged into my computer so it's charging in USB mode (lower voltage) and as of right now it's holding charge. But prior to last rebooot it was going on,off,on,off with the charge. Today my phone has locked up a few times when plugged into a full AC charger even. Seems to be completely random right now. I'm just looking for any advice. Going to flash a different ROM and see if that does anything. If not, what part would I need to order? I saw a Youtube instructional video on how to replace USB port and I'd be willing to do that. I bought my phone off Craigslist and have had it for like 6 months. No proof of purchase, which you need for Samsung warranties right? The battery is not "swollen" in the middle. Oh, also this morning, when it was going in,out,in,out,in,out constantly (on full AC charger), i could actually HEAR the (official Samsung) charger resetting itself almost, in sync with when the charge would cut out, if that makes sense. I could actually hear the charger making a "click" everytime it would lose charge then it would try charging again, and would click off again, over and over. Lastly, today I also saw in settings->battery it saying "charging" even though the charge light on my phone was off AND i saw it drop a percentage so it wasn't actually charging. VERY random. Maybe clear battery stats? Doubt that'd do anything... I have CWRP on my phone...
Any thoughts at all on this or if you've seen this would be great. Likely new USB port needed. Where to buy? If new ROM does not fix, it must have to be replaced. That's all I can think of....
Currently, it is holding a charge. I re-installed NEAK kernel, and set the AC charging to 1000 instead of the default of 1700. This happens though. When it seems to be holding, it's fine until I unplug and try later and then all the randomness begins. No idea what to think of it. Don't even know if setting to 1000 had anything to do with it working, likely not....
Didn't see it mentioned. Have you tried a different cable or even a different charger? Would do that before changing a usb port on the phone. Doesn't sound like the port if you are able to charge via a PC USB.

hello guys,
i need help figuring what is wrong with my phone. it cannot be charged right now, even when plugged in with charger,
the charger and cable i used dont seems to be the problem as i tested with my other phone too.
i have tried changing charging port and battery, but it still didnt solve it. so here i am asking for your opinions.
last week, my phone stops charging when plugged in and the battery wont go up when charged, i tried using same charger and cable to charge my other phone but those didnt seem to be the problem. after that, my phone eventually ran out of battery and died.
then, i thought my charging port has problem, so i buy new one and change the charging port.
but that didnt not solve my problem, as my phone did not even boot when plugged in and when i tried to charge it after that.
then, i assume it was my battery that has problem. so i bought new battery, fortunately, the new battery came in with 50% of battery juice. but after i try to charged it, the problem still there, the phone still cannot be charged.
this time, i checked with the ampere app for my charging status and found that when plugged in, initially the phone is charging, but after few seconds, the charging stops and it will repeat the charge-stop charge cycle. this is also visible with my charging led light.
however, i dont remember if this charge-stop charge cycle was there initially last week, i only remember it just stops charging, so i didnt know whether this is another problem or the same one initially.
things that i have also tried
1. i also tried changing the charging port to the old one and it didnt do anything, same as im using the new charging port. the problem still there.
2. i also tried using usb file transfer to test whether the charging port are problematic overall or just the charging part is problem. my usb connection has no problem as i can steadily transfer file for few minutes without disconnecting. so i assume my new charging port has no problem then.
3. i also tried flashing stock rom as i thought maybe kernels and stuff from custom rom messing things up. but it also didnt solve it.
4. i also tried turning the phone off and charging it, the phone boots up to charging screen, but the battery keeps dropping instead.
i dont really mind if this phone cant be saved anymore, i already backup important stuff from it, i just wanted to try fixing it for fun now.
also, english is not my first language, sorry if there are parts that is hard to understand.
Maybe some partitions are corrupted(like persist or any other)... search on xda how to flash those partitions. And try flash full MIUI fastboot ROM. Khmm if this doesn't work than I'm out of ideas. You can buy charger for battery only, for playing around until you gonna find a fix. Better than buying new one.
Good luck.
