Boot manually into cwm
Problem solved. A mod can lock this thread now

you could have flashed root via CWM and have root access in ICS. Rebooting in CWM to flash a rom would still work without root as you already know mate but if you wanted a root application in ICS flash the file in CWM and superuser would be available in ICS try it next time you decide to flash ICS

Hi, I have a unbranded, unlocked Arc S, running ICS, and I want to flash the 4.04 image, which comes as a CWM zip.
Everything is currently stock but rooted.
The 4.04 update is a ZIP (rather than a FTF), so I think I need CWM installed to flash the update. I can't find anything that tells me how.
I found a easy installer, but it categorically says don't use it with ICS.
HELP!!!
CWM Auto-Installer
Try CWM auto-installer, you can find it in Play Store and it worked to me.
Look in the dev section for the stock ics kernel with cwm is the simplest way.

Use fastboot to boot either a custom kernel like ArcNight or DoomKernel, or cobratos modded stock. They contain cwm, on boot repeatedly press any of the h/w keys to enter cwm and flash the zip on the sdcard.

I only ever found the old beta kernel for ICS, not the final one. Got a link?
I tried the auto CWM installer, and yes it did install onto stock ICS, and I managed to install the 4.04 ZIP, but now it just hangs on the Sony startup screen.
Any advice on how to get back to something that works?
Sorry I haven't looked at that Rom as it's a dev Rom thats been ported, before installing that Rom did you make a cwm backup? Otherwise you install another Rom.

Before flashing a ics rom in zip format you need to flash a complete ics (ftf file) via flashtool /pc companion /seus.
Ok so i decided to do the update on the tmobile samsung s3, lost root and tried to do the zedomax method.that didnt work, tired a couple other method. they didnt work either. i dont know what to do.... phone is working fine but i cant get Odin to push cwm, i keep getting failed on the cwm install. i truly read all and researched and anything else im having issue understanding. can someone make a video or help on another method that worked for them.
Follow the guide how to root without tripping flash counter over at the development thread. Once your stock and rooted. Download ROM man anger and flash recovery from there. Forget about flashing cwm through Odin . Do it this way it always works.

-Custom recovery
-Install-able SuperSU (Root)
-Triangle Away

No. You need root first if you follow that thread I was telling you about. But the cool thing is when you use Odin following the thread I told you. After your phone reboots you will find superuser that means root. Then you can flash recover through rom manager. Just make sure to put any ROMs you want to flash on your internal SD card and not the external. When you flash a ROM you will be rooted. Custom ROMs that is.
Pm me if you need more help

I wanted to root also. Im on stock with latest update. So let me make it clear: (Im a total noob spending the whole last night to learn about rooting)
First, I do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 .
Ok so now I have rooted stock with latest update. It will wipe my sd card, correct?
Next, I go to Google Play to download Rom Manager. then flash CWM recovery. (I want to root because I want backup)
I heard the official tmo JB is coming soon. I suppose I will not be able to update through Kies with my phone rooted, right? so what is the best way to update to JB? thanks guys

Yup you are right. Follow what you typed and your into the promise land. As of now some people are lucky enough using voodoo root keeper from market but some aren't. When they try to re root custom recovery isn't sticking. Just wait a couple days. I'm sure devs will have a full rom with latest jb patch included.

what do you mean by "custom recovery isnt sticking"? it is CWM recovery flashed to the recovery partition, isn't it? Also I'm pretty confused. after rooted, can I still do factory reset in the usual way? (go to settings/reset)
Yea some people updated the leak jb and lost root. They then tried and root again and were successful but when trying to flash cwm thru Odin, the recovery wasn't sticking so when they boot into recovery it would only be stock recovery. IF you still have root and wanna grab the jb leak wild just released jb update so go grab it and flash away.

I didn't find anything in search, so here goes.
Anyone tell me how to get root after manually updating to JB? Would I have to re-install CWM via Odin again?
The rooting process is the same for jb.
If you updated manually out is possible that you still have root but may have lost your custom recovery. The newer builds (lg8 and later) have code that replaces the stock recovery of the signature does not match.
If that has happened your best bet is to flash cwm using Odin again but you must also disable the code that replaces the recovery. Do a Google search for Team Epic Root From Recovery for the process.
You need to flash the recovery with Odin and then get into recovery before you not the Rom so that you can then flash the Team Epic Root From Recovery file.

I have a noob question (and i`m new here with the ace 2...):
I search some threads but i dont find a clearly answer.
I want to install a custom rom.
I have jb stock.
It is nessesary to root the phone first and than install the rom or is the root option in some custom roms includet that means i dont install root as a single part?
That means i go into the stock recovery install cwm and after that i install simply the custom rom....right?
Witch roms has the root includet?
Thanks for HELPING!!
Yes, custom roms are rooted

1. You dont have to root your phone first when you want to install custom rom...
2. Every custom rom, like CM or PAC is rooted so you don't have to root as a single part.
3. If you want to install custom rom, just put in your sd card and flash with cwm recovery
Press thanks if I helped you

I am currently running the Hyperdrive Rom. It has been a while since i flashed it. I seem to remember that I did not root my phone because the rom had root priv. I only installed the custom recovery. I would like to switch over the AOKP rom but I am not sure if I need to root first or if the rom has root. and also, if I do root will I then have to install a recovery again after. would also appreciate any advise on which root method is best. thanks for any help.
Check the change log for the rom and compatibility with your current Android firmware version. Most of the time after you root you'll be asked if you want custom recovery.
