The best mods for me come from the Roms themselves. I'm currently running AXI0M Crossbreed (AOKP 4.0.4 Kang/Hybrid), but AOKP build 27 and GummyNex 0.8.1 are also very cool. My three favorite themes are Black Exodus by Nitroz, Amoled Blue, and ICS&Black.
You can use Nova Launcher or Apex Launcher to modify your icons on your homescreen. Also, Desktop Visualizer can do this too!
Any questions, just ask. =]
First welcome to the world of android and welcome to the Galaxy Nexus . Second work your way over to the "Post your screen shot" thread of any forum and have a field day . You will be surprised at what you can do with these phones and set ups people run . I have seen both sides of the fence Apple/Android . In terms of setting up the phone to look the way you want it , in my opinion Android wins hand down everytime . You can keep the screens as minimal as you want or pack the hell out of them with widgets and apps . The sky is the limit and have fun with it . Im not totally knocking Apple they have their place in the world . But to put it in a metaphore : Apple is like a resturant that makes a really kick ass dinner . Android is a buffet that has kickass everything on it that you can pick and choose whatever you want and set it up however you want .

Damn anton2009. You must have almost the exact set up as I have. I fully agree with all the above.
Hi guys, got it in my hand ! loving it so far ! would you be able to point me into the direction of being able to mod it for custom icons as per my original post? i have downloaded nova launcher, thank you !
I just got my Gnex a few days ago and I highly recommend installing the Gummy ROM. It has several features that would be so hard for me to live without now that I have them! One is if you hold down the power button to bring up the power menu there is an option to disable the soft keys. Not only does it give you full use of the screen, it prevents people from accidentally hitting a button when you hand them your phone to look at something. You can also customize the soft keys in the settings, I can't live without my search key!

OK, before you can just go modding anything, you will have to unlock the bootloader and root your phone. Then you can customize to your hearts content. Right now, without root, the only customizations you can use are the different launchers in the Market and themes made for them, like ADW launcher and it's themes or Go Launcher is another popular one. I suggest reading. Then after that read some more. When you get done reading some more, go read some more. THere are dangers in rooting and flashing roms and themes, but the benefits far outweigh the bad. Don't just go into it blindly though. Make sure you know what rooting is, why you should do it and the risks and rewards involved. Get the most out of your phone with root, but like I said, make sure you read about it and don't just do it or you'll be starting a new thread saying....'Hey, My phone won't boot up, it just plays the bootscreen over and over. HAAALPPP!!!!'
This was my first Android device too. I highly suggest unlocking the bootloader and rooting before you start to customize your device. This is why you got a Nexus right?
Follow my guide on getting these mods to work.

It's still missing features, but fully functional as my (and few other testers) daily driver.
Known bug (not implemented/fixed yet): Not working in force landscape.
Also, this app is straight from my nook signed with debug keys, once beta will be launched you will have to uninstall and reinstall.
I travel at least every other week, so I have little time to dedicate to the project.
I'm considering to move source to github, so that other developers can contribute in order to speedup development.

OLD TOPIC:
subj!
I found myself not liking android type home on my NST, but I do not have good design/look and feel ideas (Of course besides Partial Refresh and gamma friendly functions).
Please drop ideas and if we can come up with something interesting I can implement it.
Update:
Features to consider:
* http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gadgetlab/2010/01/dsc00387.jpg
Recent added files widget
* High contrast icons and text, e.g. http://www.asus.com/websites/global/products/47XM7SydX7IhkXP3/theme.jpg
* Partial refresh
* Ability to open as dialog (as soft keys) with soft keys?
* app Drawer widget?, similar to https://market.android.com/details?id=com.th.android.widget.SiMiFolder
Yeah that kind of things sounds great.
Personally, I think that a mix between the (stock) nook launcher and a standard android launcher could be interesting.
For example, a screen with the last opened books (if it is possible) + links to favorite apps or something like that
BTW, there is already a Nook specific launcher (Relaunch). It has interesting features but I don't use it as I don't really like how it looks ...

Relaunch looks terrible.
I'm thinking of partial refresh/color theme friendly aosp launcher with widgets for recently added books and will have to check about last access info.
May be high contrast recent/running apps widget as well.

i have a idea, cause i think some limitation of the eink display
i don't think we need too many scrollable effect, this only have one page at the main screen
it would be simple & high contrast
attached is some demo

Great demo, I like it too.
I´m using Zeam launcher 2.8.8.
yeah i like the demo of chriscsh too...
(maybe round the corners, the squares are too windows phone like )
and Id like to have a bar or something where you can place books with covers like on stock home or your demo...
the idea with a "native" nook touch launcher is very exciting

Guys mayby the best idea would be to edit stock home app, in order to look like that image from first post http://www.asus.com/websites/global/products/47XM7SydX7IhkXP3/theme.jpg
I think it is so cute.
I think the idea of a NST specific launcher would be great. I prefer Zeam, but am using Go launcher because of widget management. Go Launcher allows you to resize widget once created AND there is a simple click here to delete. I have always had a problem deleting widgets using Zeam because I can't always tell when the widget is in the trash bin, i.e. 2x4, or 4x3 widgets. If the nook launcher could have go launcher like widget management that would be great OR if you go with the trashcan idea once item is in can have an x or something like that appear on the widget.
Well, i think it would be easier to use a modified version of a popular launcher. The things that would need to be changed are transitions, animations, contrast and colours(nook touch themes i suppose).
To i use to minimize refreshing and ugliness i use Do it theme for go launcher ex, the change the app drawer background to a white one(just a white.png) and a wp wallpaper. The transitions for both the desktop and the app drawer is named shutter(go launcher ex, haven't tried others). It lets me go through the app drawers with out a full refresh. One last thing i did was changed the Icon set to the default.
It would be nice to have a small widget with next calendar envent (taken from google calendar acount) on the launcher
How is called the clock widget in second post before?
IF you are talking about my post, its Wp clock .Not really a widget as it replaces your wallpaper with the clock.
There are a couple of *minor* things wrong with the android standard launcher types;
1) Colors should be inverted. Most are black with colored icons over them. This makes sense on color LCDs, particularly AMOLED displays, because it saves power. Not on eink though.
Instead of colors on black, it should be colors on WHITE.
I am using golauncher, it is ACCEPTIBLE when the proper THEME is applied and background images are changed to plain white backgrounds.
2) Scrolling. Eink displays DO NOT SCROLL. The ideal launcher would get rid of all scrolling/moving/swiping/whatever cuteness effects and just flip from one state to the final without ANY intermediate states.
Features I'm thinking right now:
0. Based on aosp launcher or launcher-plus (at least partially)
1. Ability to set size of the app launch button to 2x1 or 3x1 as in http://www.asus.com/websites/global/products/47XM7SydX7IhkXP3/theme.jpg
2. Option to set higher contrast to the icons as I do in quicknav in my mod now.
3. I plan gestures in addition to arrow buttons, but w/o any animations.
4. Instead of darg'n'drop to uninstall and maybe for homepage cell action selection I plan to show action select popup.
5. Widgets with popups covering part of the screen for all apps, settings, recently added files (selected by the masks, e.g. *epub, *.fb2, *.txt, etc.) if possible with covers
6. Back/Menu/Home/Search buttons will not require root (will not show granted root Toast at top) if launcher running with my mod.
WOW!!! If someone did a launcher that looked like this
with partial refresh for the nook touch, I would pay for it with pleasure, its gorgeous!
Hope this idea dosnt die, and development starts on this.

*NOTE* - If you wish to know what the best app is regarding your needs, ask in this thread and I, or others, will be able to help you out.
So, if you want to know what the best music player is, ask here and I'll suggest the best ones available.
If there are any apps that you feel shouldn't be in this list, please let me know and suggest a better one. I can then test it and maybe add it to the list, in place of the other one.

Must Have Apps on the Galaxy SIII
Due to popular demand via PMs, I've decided to add a slot to this thread to display some of the best games we can get on our Android device.
As with the app list above, if there's a great game you'd like to be added to this list, let me know and I may well add it in
1. Pool Break Lite - If you like to play pool, snooker, billiards etc. on the go then this is a great app you. There are a few different variations to play in either single player or multiplayer online mode and even more variations if you buy the pro version.
2. FIFA 12 - This game speaks for itself. It's the latest mobile version of the FIFA franchise and is easily the best so far, with it showing vast improvements. There's a load of different cups and leagues to play through and with great graphics with no lag in the slightest.
3. World Series Of Poker - Probably the best game from EA (in my opinion). If you like to play poker I totally recommend this game. You can play Texas Holdem and Omaha in either cash games, tournaments or play for a WSOP bracelet as the main prize. Guest mode is now available for no login from Facebook is needed.
4. iAssociate2 - This is a good choice if you prefer a bit of a brain tester. iAssociate2 is a word association game you have to figure out which words and phrases are associated to each other. Sound easy? Give it a try and you can soon find out differently.
5. Need For Speed Most Wanted - Another brilliant addition to the EA family, Most Wanted finally brings one of the best racing experiences to Android. It's a brilliant game all round but the only thing it's lacking, in my opinion, is 'free roam' mode. But apart from that, it brings brilliant graphics and flawless gameplay.
6. Grand Theft Auto III - Grand Theft Auto III was a crime game which changed the future of gaming and is amazing to play on the go with our Androids. The full console game with great graphics, full features and surprisingly no lag considering it's such a huge game. Countless hours of gameplay, HD quality resolution and visually stunning graphics make this a must for our devices.
Must Have Apps on the Galaxy SIII
The idea to add widgets into this thread aswell was an idea taken from Goku80 and I hope you lot like it.
So, the list in this post is strictly for widgets. I'll add some widgets myself as a base, but as always feel free to suggest some of your favorite widgets and they may make it into this list.
1. Beautiful Widgets - Beautiful set of Widgets containing clock widget, clock and weather widget, weather widgets, date widgets and toggle widgets with skins/themes support!
2. Fancy Widgets - Personalize your Android home screen with highly customizable clock widgets, weather widgets, home (clock & weather) widgets, forecast widgets, and more with lots of customization options.
3. Ultimate custom widget (UCCW) - If you enjoy customizing the look of your homescreen then this is pretty much a MUST HAVE app for you. It allows the user to create their own pure custom clocks with a near endless array of options to customize it how they'd like. However you want it, you can make it with UCCW.
4. Desktop VisualizeR - Here's another really useful widget if you love to customize your screens. This gives you the ability to make shortcuts and widgets with any image you specify, rather than just the default logos. You can also use this app to give apps a custom icon of your own, which is handy if your icon design doesn't currently exist.
5. Minimalistic Text - Minimalistic Text is a widget app that displays information in a minimalistic way. It can be configured to display time, date, battery and weather information. The layout of the widget is highly customizable throughout.
6. Eye In The Sky Weather - This is for all those who like their weather clean, simple and beautiful. The app includes 12 of the best weather icon sets and the ability to add your own icon sets.

Notifier pro plus---gives you repeat notifications for apps you choose. great for when you get certain events or notifications you dont want to miss
auto wifi toggle-- lets you set up times through out the day that it triggers wifi. if there is no connection with in a set amount of time it turns back off. great for people who like to be connected to wifi. saves battery because wifi isnt always on.
screen on app that keeps the screen on when in apps you choose. great for well pretty much every app that you want the screen to stay on
screen caster app that records the android screen. great for if you want to show a but to a dev or show an app to a friend. you can record the screen, it can also record your voice so you can explain whats going on. you can then load it to youtube.
droid wall great security app that actually works. when set up it block incoming and outgoing data connections. with this app you can ensure that none of your data is leaving your phone with out you knowing. note that if one of your apps isnt working you may need to check what you have set up.
Lux auto brightness a screen brightness app that works very wekk when set up properly. helps me save battery. also great for at night with a loer brightness. the screen no longer hurts my eyes when i first turn it on.
Smart screen off good app for turning off the screen. uses the proximity sensor to turn off the screen if its covered for a certain period of time. great so you dont pocket dial!
this is just some of my collection that ive been gathering over the years.
most of these app are paid apps but trust me they are good ones.
hope you like them!!!!
If you want a security app, how about Cerberus?
LBE Privacy Guard is a great security app as well. Allows you to manage and change any permission on any app. For example, if some apps want GPS (Angry Birds Space) and will automatically turn it on for location based ads, you deny it right off the bat.
Anytime you install an app from the store, a notification will allow you to manage the permissions for that app before you ever launch it.
Another one would be Avast. A security app that does all kinds of things I don't even know what they are. Have the ability to install at kernel level if rooted too, which could be beneficial.
Zedge should probably be in there somewhere.
Never really used romtoolbox.. I've never had a reason..

I'm not gonna be adding any lockscreens or launchers to the list because there's already tons of threads on each forum that go into detail about them. You're all welcome to post them in your own list as a couple of you have
I'm not too sure on which security app I'll add yet because I haven't really tried many yet.
I'm also undecided about a wallpapers app at the moment. I used to use Zedge until I found out about PicSpeed HD Wallpapers and I've used it since. Then there's Wallbase HD Wallpapers that FrameCityJackal mentioned aswell.
Any other wallpaper apps I should check out?
Hi Folks,
I am working on a new launcher for Android - visit terrainhome.com to get to the play store link, or search for "terrainhome" in the play store.
It is based on the stock android launcher, but adds the following key features:
1. Really fast device search
2. Sidebar with lightweight, web-powered widgets
3. Badges for unread gmail, messenger and phone
It will only work on phones (no tablet support right now), and with Android 4.1+.
Even though I think that its pretty stable, I would love get your feedback if you see any trouble or if you have any suggestions on how to improve it.

Just tried it, very nice! :good: The Google Now like bar is almost better than the Google one since it has the controls and recent apps (and that we know that Google doesn't get our data xD). A few issues though:
Startup time, on first start there is a black screen for a few seconds until the get started page comes up (and that is also pretty lagging at first)
There could be (a lot) more settings and customization options, since this is a launcher, I would want a 5*4 grid or other animations for instance. Just take a look at nova and you have a lot of work (just kidding)
And could you please call the launcher activity "terrain" and not "launcher" ? I find it really annoying and distracting that most launchers do this (including the Kitkat laumcher).
Other than that, pretty cool and fast launcher, gonna be my daily if you add some more customization (need that 5*4 grid)

Thanks for the feedback! I will look at the startup time, it should not be so high. The activity is called "Terrain", its wierd that its showing it to you as launcher. I want to nail down the sidebar and search before adding 'advanced' launcher features like grid size, but its something that I definitely want to do.
I've been looking for a new launcher for a bit of time now to replace Nova Prime, which I'm getting tired of. Thankfully, I have for this launcher to use. I've been using it now for a bit of time now.

Looks interesting. Installing it "as we speak". Will follow up with feedback after I've had some experience with it. Can't wait! :fingers-crossed::highfive:
If i do not root the telephone, can I use personalized widgets and themes?
Sorry for the quite trivial question but I do not have Samsung experience

Absolutely! That's the great thing about Android. You can even choose to go with something completely different than Samsung's launcher. There's lots of different launchers that support themes. Nova and Apex are two popular options. Themes are also available for Samsung.

1. Launcher and theme as mention above.
2. Ads free by Adguard on Play Store.
3. Disable almost apps anf module you want by EZ Disable Package or Package Disable Pro
4. Change dpi by Content Scaling or some commands through adb

I prefer not to root or tinker with my primary business phone because I don't want to have something not work as intended and miss a call or appointment.
The level of customization you can do with launchers and themes these days is almost on par with what you can achieve with a rooted device.
In addition to themes you can also download and install custom icon packs to customize the look of all of your icons.
For widgets you can get something like the Beautiful Widgets app that lets you customize various widgets for the device. It is very popular for people who like the HTC type clock widget look on their home screens.
Just do some searches on the play store for themes, icon packs, widgets, keyboards, etc and there are enough customization options to make your head spin.
For Home screens / App drawer / Folder, any Launcher will do. My all time fav, and most reliable recommendation is easily Nova Launcher.
- Nova lets you customize the font size, label colours, icon sizes, icon packs, homescreen grid, app drawer grid, homescreen gestures and so much more.
For custom button remapping, Button Remapper works perfectly without root. It will let you set custom actions for your physical buttons (swap the recent/back if you wish, or add hold functionality)
- The app is a bit limited without root in regards to added functionality, but its something!
- I believe the non-rooted version also allows you to map volume keys to add Music skip / pause functionality. (Correct me if im wrong!)
For global app / service disabling, definitely use Package Disabler Pro. It has a built in list of (currently) 97 apps considered unneeded, and gives you full control of every app.
- This has been proven to save battery btw!
For added Toggles in the Notification panel (not QuickPanel) there are hundreds of working apps that add their own little notification bar, fully interactive, that shows up as a notification card.
- It may seem a bit redundant considering Samsung's built in QuickPanel does mostly everything, but for a few things that may be missing (ie. Hotspot, Mobile Data, or specific functions like opening apps, setting gps/data to specific modes etc).
For ad blocking, you can use AdGuard. I havent personally tried this app, but it is highly recommended by most users in this forum.
For button backlight disabling / modding, you can use Button Backlight 2.
- It allows you to turn off button backlight completely, add a custom time, or have them on all the time
Android is so vastly open, even without root, if you ever feel like you are missing a certain function / feature, theres a very high chance that a solution would have been made long ago.
It never hurts to google what you wish to do. When I first got my Note 5 for example, the first phone with button backlights, I wanted to turn them off completely as well as swap the layout of them from recents home back, to back home recents. A few minutes later and I found myself using the two apps mentioned above, and a happy camper!
well it looks like I am really grateful to samsung to give me the possibilities under the hood. My dev friends scared me in every way saying that touch wiz is bloatware, that people think is really taking the control of the system, instead I found it effective, and most important of all I am happy samsung is not taking coltan from congolese mines.
I am also really grateful to you.
which tutorial do you recommend me to customize my themes? if there is an app, Gui super, otherwise I am also an android developer, so do not mind also to write some java/xml. Also i guess there is some design involved, which software should i use photoshop or gimp? Last but not least, as I use to test my apps, installing a lot of themes will decrease the perform, or the fact that is run one per time will not affect performance? thank you guys. Customization is everything for me, as bosters creativity and make the day more exciting
EDIT: I am wondering if downloading themes is safe in terms of malicious code.
Hi
I have installed Lineage 14.1 (Android 7 ROM) and Gapps. It's runs on the google launcher which is pretty awesome but it doesn't feel right as the tablet is a Samsung.
I know the word "Touchwiz" can cause arguments in the android world but I want to install the s8 touchwiz as it is really smooth and a massive improvement on it predecessors. I have installed an Apk like I have done on my s7e but it just says "Touchwiz has stopped working"
Is there other apps that I need so the touchwiz can run?
(Note I am just interested installing the touchwiz not the other samsung apps (bloatware) but obviously if there are any samsung system apps I need, I don't mind installing them)
Thanks
Hi peeps I have an update.
I have come up with an alternative solution.
Basically I haven't got touchwiz on my tablet there is so many system apps I need to look into and research it's madness....but I will keep looking into it and when I crack the code I will let you know.
I have found a way of making my tablet look more samsung and close to an S8 touchwiz than ever.
First step is go on to google play store and download "Note 8 launcher" made by Nice Launcher Apps, this app is the best samsung touchwiz launcher I have ever tested and I tried a lot of them, once it's downloaded and installed it's time to start tweaking with the app setting (I luckily had an S8 in front of me to help me compare) the hardest setting is getting rid of the all apps button as you don't need it due to the fact it has the awesome swipe up feature like the S8 and N8. You need to go into a setting called dock and enable editing at the very bottom then you can drag and remove what apps in the bottom you don't want and add which ones you do want in the bottom that you do want.....also look at other dock setting get rid of dock scrolling by changing it to 1 page and once your finished in your dock setting disable the editing, to sort lock your in your prefered setting. The rest is quite straight forward and you will also have to change the awful wallpaper it comes with (unless you like it)
Once you have all setting tweaked to the way you like it....you need to move on and get some samsung style widgets....you see a lot of suggestions on the net for widgets but I feel the most accurate when sitting right next to S8 is Xwidget app via the play store, just type in samsung and loads of s8 and s7 style widgets appear choose you favourites if you have the normal version of the app or all of them if you have the pro version. Then simply apply the widgets the same way you apply other custom widget apps to your home screen.
Lastly if you don't like any of the icons installed or available to the Note 8 launcher app then go on to zedge and get some from there as they have good selection as well.
This was all for a Samsung Tab Pro 10.1 but this will pretty much work on any android device and it doesn't seem you will require root (even though my tab was rooted) all you need is some confidence around settings and a little bit of paitents.
If anyone has any info on samsung system apps and how to get a real touchwiz working on my tablet.....then that would be great.
Have fun all
Hey people.
I feel like I need to update this thread as the method at the top didn't work out. For some reason the launcher wouldn't remember my setup and in the end would become a waste of memory and time.
I heard that you could set up nova launcher to look like touchwiz. So I searched around the web and found this post from XDA.
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/foru...theme-nova-launcher-s8-launcher-t3583095/amp/
It perfect and does exactly what you need it to do and feels just like Samsung s8 touchwiz/Samsung Experince.
For the icons I downloaded this app
https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&s...oQ5YQBCCEwAQ&usg=AOvVaw2UNLhVoe-wCWql_eNnYhkF
Any of the icons that are not right then you can edit them via nova launcher and put the right ones in.
It's prob worth noting I was given a tenner to spend on Google play store after a mix up on android pay. So I got the nova prime and paid for the decent icon pack. If you got the spare cash then it's worth a spend but if you don't then I think you can do this free as well....plenty of other s8 icon packs on play store.
