For whatever reason, Odin 1.85 won't work on my computer. However, Odin 1.83 does work. Is it safe to use the older version of Odin to flash stuff on my phone?
Should be fine

I have been using the evo and thunderblot since release and have considered myself a power user... now I got the GSII and something "odin" keeps on being mentioned. What is odin and what do i need it for? (I'm quite sure it's only a samsung thing... as I never had to use it on my other phones)
THANKS
Its a Samsung leaked tool that us used to flash roms/kernels/radios. It flashes tar files. Usually samsung will release the stock tar file so you can use odin to flash the tar file anytime u need to return to stock. Or u use it flash a different radio. Check out the thread in development for odin 1.85. If u want to mod this phone u have to understand odin and have it setup on your computer.

So there is no hboot on samsung phones? or else hboot and recovery can do it all...
anyone know which version of odin to use
Title says most of it but will give whole back story.
On EL29 Rooted using the EL29 Odin flash then used the e4gtauto-sfx and flashed EL29+CWM. Used CWM did a backup and then installed Blazer Rom tried it for a few days and then wanted to try something else to see what else there is. So not thinking I used Odin and used the flash back to EL29 rooted and then lost CWM.
I am now trying to use the e4gtauto-sfx to flash back to EL29+CWM but it gets to waiting for device to be connected and will go no further. I have checked and unchecked usb debugging, installed and uninstalled drivers again and again and no matter what I do the e4gtauto-sfx will not connect to my phone again. I can use Odin fine and I can see it in my device manager the same as before other programs like CDMA Workshop recognize it fine but not the e4gtauto-sfx.
Out of ideas of how to fix it so here asking for any help to try to figure this out.
Get the EG30 Odin or get a kernel with CWM built in in Odin form. EL29 has a different bootloader that's why the auto root does not work on it. I always just flash EG30 and go at it from there fast and simple.

So I can use the "same" EG30 root flash for Odin just like I did the EL29 or some other steps required to flash different modems?
Yes just find a kernel with CWM already built in in Odin tar format. Use Odin to flash it and it will give you CWM back and you are fine.
My rule of thumb I just always keep EG30 tar around if I need it but that's me.

odin does not require a rooted phone to flash.
you can flash any rom/kernel/modem you wish providing it is a .tar file.

If Auto Root doesn't recognize your phone, basically "adb" doesn't recognize your phone. That is pretty basic functionality if you are on xda. You should go over FAQ #E3 in the 2nd post of the Auto Root thread, which is the troubleshooting checklist. I would reboot your PC also (or kill the adb server using Option E)
You don't actually need a PC to install CWM. Just copy the files in copy2sd\000root and copy2sd-img\000root to your /sdcard on your phone and follow the manual install directions in the 2nd post of the Auto Root thread.
my phone is stuck on the "firmware update issue, use kies" screen, those arent the exact words but thats the gist of that screen. cant access recovery so i went to download mode and tried to flash a bunch of stock firmware tar,md5's different stock versions incuding the recommended root66 version, everytime i try to flash a pda with odin it says fail after modem.bin, so i thought after like 30 tries that its having issues with the modem.bin, so i went on tesh's stock modem page and tried to flash the modem.bin through phone section of odin, once again it starts and then says fail. i really dont know what the issue is i just cant seem to go back to stock, i feel is just bricked, even though im able to use odin and download mode

What version of ODIN? Should be version 3-something I think - I feel like earlier versions of ODIN run into the modem.bin fail though.
That screen will still work the same as the other screen.. it has a pic of a pc and phone... As for the error try a different usb cable and/or port. Also like dwith said make sure your using the 3.xx version of odin

I have mobile odin pro on my phone and it is rooted. But mobile odin doesnt support tab s.
I am at the univ so I dot have the admin rights to run Odin on Windows.
I want to flash this latest firmware T800ZSU1ANG2_T800OZS1ANG2_HOME.tar.md5. Is there any way to do this from the phone itself now that mobile odin pro dont support this? Or is there any chance of getting odin on Windows to work without admin pass?
thanks
I will get home tonight and flash it there but I wanna do it badly right now.. hehe
