Won't Connect to 4G - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So everything was fine on my Evo (running one of decks roms with a ICS theme) until the screen went out friday night. Saturday I took it in and it was repaired in about 2 hours (very impressed). In between I activated an old back up phone to get me by. When I picked up my Evo the tech had reactivated it and it was ready to go. But when I got to work I had no data. No internet service at all. Calls and Texts were fine, but nothing else. I made sure mobile data was checked, (couldn't update PRL cause of the AOSP rom), but I did a battery pull, rebooted, then I decided to nandroid back to a previous sense rom. Once I booted up still nothing. after about 2 hours all of a sudden I was getting emails, and voxer messages....I had data back!!! But when I tried 4G nothing happened (stays on obtaining IP). Hoping a newer stock based rom would help I flashed the new swag ON rom. Loving the rom...everything is great, but still no 4g. My last resort is to unroot and go back to sprint. I downloaded the wimaxx checker and it says I have my RSA keys so I know those are there. I'm sorry if this is a bit long winded, but I thought being as detailed as possible would help. Any suggestions would be great. The members here have helped me through lots of trouble shooting in the past.
Should also be noted that I attempted PRL update again with no luck, and I live in San Antonio which is a solid 4g area for me.

Good thinking with Wimax Checker - That's usually the first line of defense.
It sounds like because you cannot update PRL or Data Profile that there may have been an issue in the reactivation by the tech at the Sprint store. With that said, I know I'm in the Philadelphia region with good 4G but occasionally there will be a day or so of PRL/Profile update "outages" where I cannot update. I usually will verify with a family member's phone (also on Sprint). Perhaps try having someone you know in the area with Sprint and an android phone try a profile and/or PRL update to make sure it's not just the system being unresponsive.

Ok I will try that tonight and reply back. I had my g/f's evo running decks rom try her 4g and it worked perfectly so I know its my phone. I'll see if she can update. Either way is there some sort of combo pack I can flash for profile and prl??? I'm not too sure how that would work.

Here is the latest Radios-Wimax-PRI-NV Combo pack Click HERE

Ok I flashed an older Wimaxx since the one I had was up to date(did a check in TE). Once flashed and booted up still no 4g. Is it possible that this could be a hardware issue since everything else works? Like the actual antenna is busted? Just hard for me to think that since it was working fine before my screen went out. I always have 4g service at home and work. And my g/f's is working fine she has the evo and she has sprint.

Issues connecting to 4g

So idk what exactly is going on but last night I tried turning on my 4g and when it actually turned on it immediately turned back off...then I tried rebooting the phone and seeing if that helped but the same thing...then I tried doing a little research and I come to find that people have been losing their RSA keys and breaking their 4g...so I ran android ask and checked my wimax via adb and everything seemed as though it was there landing the right place (no errors) but I still have no 4g...now if I'm not mistaken I upgraded a few radios, including baseband and wimax, and I heard there have been connection issues with flashing those as well, but not "broken" 4g...so I'm just looking for a little direction I guess...I'm running Myn's warm rls4 rom and using netarchy 4.1.9.1 kernel (if the even matters) and when I go to check my 4g MAC address it says unavailable...can anyone point me in the right direction...I don't use 4g a lot cus I'm just outside of a 4g area but still, its the EVO "4G" and I would like to make sure it stays that way...if you know what I mean ;-)...any help is appreciated

To check your 4G MAC address, you need to first have your 4G radio on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9663192#post9663192
Read that to check your RSA keys and troubleshoot whether or not you have hosed your keys. If you lost your RSA keys, then there is no way ATM to get it back short of returning your phone for a replacement.
Did you update your profile after flashing the new radios?

that was the thread i found to help me check and see if my RSA keys were missing but they aren't...the problem i'm having is that my 4G is turning on but once it's on it immediately turns itself off...and i've tried this several times in a known 4G coverage area

yea i always update my PRL and my Profile after flashing new radios but still same thing...i only just now found out there was a problem tho cus i don't use it too often and when i went to use it, it wouldn't stay on and scan for a signal.
sorry btw for the late reply
EDIT: would going back to a different WiMax radio version help? i would try it without asking but i'm afraid to ACTUALLY lose my RSA keys so yea.
I'm having the same exact issue...any updates?
I'm in the same boat. I had to take my day 1 EVO (hardware 0002) to a Sprint store on Christmas Eve as I dropped it flat on its face and shattered the screen last week. Although I figured it wouldn't be an issue, rather than risk a small chance that they wouldn't repair under the TEP and $500, I went ahead and unrooted and returned to S-ON and loaded the new stock RUU.
So that moved me from HBOOT .97 to the new 2.10 - I then used the handy root guide for 2.10 and was able to re-root and S-Off without any problem, but my 4G would not connect (it comes on, shows scanning, but won't connect). It did connect a couple of times, but then dropped and have not been able to reconnect at all. Wife has an Epic so know a strong 4G signal is working at home.
I've tried the tree.xml trick and also checked to make sure I still have RSA keys which I do (even backed them up after checking again today). I've reflashed the latest radios, updated profile and PRL numerous times. Nothing working. 4G worked perfectly before I unrooted, and after I unrooted (with stock RUU). It was only after re-rooting with the 2.10 thread that this happened. I have not flashed any recovery other than the modified Amon-Ra since the Hboot update.
Wondering if anyone has unrooted, then re-rooted and been able to reconnect to 4G. I may give it a try - just didn't want to go through the trouble again if it doesn't work.
Just an update if anyone else is having trouble with 4G. I had previously used Myn's rom and stock, but since Myn's wasn't updated for the new radios yet I just flashed the sprint lovers Rom in zikronix's 2.10 thread, then tried out Azreal 3.0 (which I really like) - it was in both those ROMs that 4G would not work for me.
I just flashed back to deodexed stock rooted zip of 3.70.651.1 and 4G works again!

[Q] Evo CM7 won't call, won't do data (after several days of working)

I recently rooted my Evo and put CM7 nightly 12 on it. All was well, I even installed the Savaged Zen kernel. Even better. Just yesterday I updated to CM7 RC2 to give it a shot. Today I went to work and had to drive to a remote area where I don't get service, so I put my Evo in airplane mode to save battery life. (this was after having it overheat while charging, could be a hardware issue) At the end of the day I turned the 3G radio back on and nothing... It connects and disconnects to the tower. It will not send data and it will not place phone calls on the 3G connection (WiFi works). I did a restore back to nightly 12 to see if maybe it was a problem with the OS. Nothing. A few hours ago it began functioning again, but after checking it a few minutes ago I have discovered it is back to no connection. (the signal bars bounce between nothing and full, but never shows the X for no signal) Has anyone else had an issue like this? Should I restore back to sense and unroot to take advantage of my warranty? If this has already been posted before please direct me to the right thread.
I'm having the same problem. I installed Cyanogen RC 2 and had no problem since it came out. I went on vacation to a beach, and during my trip I switched it on to airplane mode since I was in a remote location. After turning it back on, I noticed I can't get the Data Connection to work. The 3g bar doesn't even show up, and after messing with the settings trying to fix the problem I managed to do nothing. I tried using a backup I made from a week past, and encountered the same problem. Then I flashed the newest nightly and still no Data whatsoever. Wifi works fine, and 4g is acting weird but I got it to work a few times. Does this have something to do with sprint?
I think it is the same as the 4G 3G hang. I typically get it while tethering and the phone is normaly quite warm.
So I managed to fix the problem. I ended up flashing Koni's Elite Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941055
I got an error that said "Error 67 registration failure"
I updated my profile and it was automatically fixed. I'm not aware you can do this on cyanogen stock rom, but I think you can dial a number that will do this for you.
After getting the 3g to work again, I flashed back to the stock cyanogen, and it is still working. So for now im good to go.
I do think is sprint and not the rom because I did a restore to warm z and was still having the same problems. Also my brother's evo was doing the same thing and he doesnt have cm7 on it.
I figured it was something to do with the profile... I restored all the way back to sense and attempted to update profile, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I will try that ROM and see if it does anything. Why can't they just make this easy and allow updating of vital software that allows the radios to work on WiFi or from SDcard? This is dumb.
I tried that ROM and nothing works. Not really sure what to do. I might have to restore to Sense and unroot to take it back... I really want to avoid that if at all possible.
Unrooted my phone and getting a free replacement from Sprint. Still unsure of the problem, seems to work randomly.

[Q] No 4G on evo running Fresh

I have had this phone since the day it came out I was @ Radio shack @ 8 Am
I have had a good run with this phone and it still amazes me.
The only problem I have is that I have never had 4G The last rom I saw 4g on was cm7 and it still wouldnt stay on. I thought maybe it was my location the fact that I was rooted etc Then I got my wife one and she has a strong signal all day 4Mb+ speeds so I really am wondering if its just a hardware issue or something else.
I am running the latest Fresh4.1.1.0
Anybody know or have any experience with this?
maybe
I'm no expert but I used fresh 4.1 to update my prl for cm7... I had no 4g on fresh but once I did all the required steps for cm7 4g works fine along with everything else except the annoying voicemail notification.. anyway if all else fails... unroot and flash stock... get a replacement from sprint...

I don't have any problems connecting to 4G running Fresh. Have you checked your wimax keys? I think there's a free app to do this...
Get wimax key checker from the market and make sure you didn't lose your rsa keys if you have them I would try to update your prl and profile.

Wi-fi broken after root.

Hey guys. I just rooted my E4GT and didn't install the kies application first. My phone is rooted and everything seems to be functioning except for the wi-fi. Whenever I go to turn on the wi-fi, it turns on, scans for a network and then the wi-fi turns off again. Am I boned? PLEASE HELP!
epic 4g wifi broke
Same for me, after Rooting with oden the wifi searches and then turns off, any help?
I'm sorry you're having the same issue. I haven't found any solutions yet. Would you please keep me in the loop if you find one? Isn't there an IRC channel where some of these guys go and help answer questions?
Something went wrong with your flash. No worries tho you just got to go back to stock and root again. Are you familiar with Titanium Backup? If you are back up all your user apps + data. Then ODIN back to factory restore. Then auto-root with this method. Lastly restore all your apps with titanium
this happened to me but i fixed it easily
forget your wifi
connect again with password and repeat it again until it works maybe 3 times

This is good advice. Do what Kogama recommends and you should be up and running. If not, hit the "HowTo's" link in my signature and follow the steps for a Hands Free Reset. Fast. Simple. Effective. Probably a good idea to do one anyway when you make major changes such as rooting or ROM hopping.
after i rebooted the wifi stopped working and i cant get it work again actually..where is this hands free reset i cant find it only the activation which I also did again
Just_s and Kogama - That method did not work for me. By time I had typed in the WPA key, the wi-fi antennae had already shut itself off.
BUT
KelvCast - your method totally worked. Is it me or does this antennae get piss poor signal strength? But I thank you VERY much for helping me. I'm all good to go. Now on to trying to figure out my write permissions on my Kindle Fire =/
for kelvcast's way you have to completely change your modem back too right? ....damn
im running a completely different rom btw...

"Hands free"is the same as "activation". Sorry that didn't work for you. The only time I had an issue with WiFi, "forgetting" the connection and then logging in fresh was what worked for me. Any other data/ connection issues I've had have been resolved via the hands free reset.
As far as your other question, you don't need to change modems, but it won't hurt if you do.

I have the same problem as OP. Rooted using the Zerg exploit, running stock ROM. When you turn the Wifi on, it only gives you like 5-10s before it turns itself back off, also the MAC address field shows unavailable.
Assuming it's an issue with the root process. The odd thing is mine worked fine for over a week, and just randomly died today while trying to connect to wifi at school. Was going to reflash stock kernel with ODIN, and see if it effects it at all.

My WiFi is working fine with the method I used. Rooted phone and everything.
Not sure if I will be keeping Sprint anyway.
Did a speed test on my moms old LG Verizon phone running at 600mhz. Compared it to my Sprint SGSII running at 1.2ghz dual core. On the LG, I get a little more that 1/2 a meg per second (which is decent in this area) as compared to .01 - .1 meg per second on my SGSII. So there is a BIG difference in speed. I know its not the phone, but the network. Going to do my due diligence and keep the sprint phone for at least another day. But if it goes as it is now, I will be going to a Verizon store Sunday and switching carriers again. Sprint doesnt seem to be better that TMO. Sunday is my 3rd day so if I return everything to sprint, I get a full refund.

Yeah it's hit or miss. In my neighborhood, my buddies with Verizon pull down 1/3-1/2 more bandwidth, but my phone works in any basement in the area and theirs doesn't, go figure. In the mid-town/downtown areas both carriers perform about the same around here (Omaha, NE).
Now if you're talking WiMax and LTE thats a different story altogether.
As for the Thread topic: I think I know what broke mine- I restored a bunch of apps using Appextractor, and think restoring the "Settings.apk" in the system section toasted it. I tried flashing a few different kernels to no avail (Did not try the rogue kernel, however).
Lost WiFi after rooting Epic 4G Touch
I have been fighting this problem for a week now, finally I installed clockwork mod following a youtube video titled (How to Install Clockworkmod on the Samsung Epic 4G Touch - Latest) sorry cant post link new user arent allowed to post links. my phone was already rooted. I now have my WiFi Back.
Hope This Helps
I have tried every method I have been able to find.....Still no wifi. I rooted via this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429). After following that guide my wifi did not work. Just scans and then turns off. Does not even see any networks. I flashed the stock kernal. Still no wifi. I don't know what else to do. I am going to try a factory restore. If that doesn't work I might need to send my phone in.....This blows.

[Q] A bunch of questions in one???

All right I have a few question I figured I'd ask in one thread they pertain to one another I guess.
1. (blazer rom 4.0) So last night I flashed this rom because i have not given GB a chance everything went well flashed fine......but when I booted the phone everything came up but I had no service. not a empty signal display it had the circle with the slash through it no service. under about phone it said I had no number, no prl, no nothing. after doing a shutdown and restart service would come on periodically and the it would go back to what I had just mentioned.
2. (prl and profile update) so the whole reason I flashed I flashed back was to update my prl and profile. but for some reason I can not do either. for this one i just flashed back stock el29. It would say and show that I had a 3g signal but everytime I the instant I would hit update the signal would vanish and 5 seconds later i would get (error: no connection) thried this with 3g,4g,wifi no luck.
this also happen when I was talking to a sprint rep setting my epic up, it took an hour and half to get my phone updated, no bueno.
do we have prl zips for are phone? and where, if so?
and any help with the blazer rom would be great. From the little bit I messed with it, it was a very smooth and snappy rom.

There are no prl zips that IM AWARE of. I'm pretty sure there are none! Idk try to see if sprint repair can find something wrong with it! Or you can try to flash a different modem. Sorry about your issues
