[Q] New to Xperia play from bricked note - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys I've come from Samsung galaxy. Ore as it was bricked so fancyed a change I know this is no way as powerfull as the note but I have a couple of questions which maybe asked before but oh we'll
1.Is the play as good graphic wise as the psp
2.I know there are many roms but which one should I choose I'm after the latest gb close to stock with all the good tweaks lol
3have I made the right choice as I was going to get the iPhone 4s lol is they any problems with the play
Thanks hope someone can answer nicely lol

1. Depending on the game you're playing, the graphics can certainly surpass the psp's level
2. You could get the CM7 rom if you want the cyanogenmod experience (needs unlocked bootloader) or use the DooMKerneL on the updated stock rom (also needs unlocked bootloader) (bootloader MUST be unlocked to flash any non-stock kernel). Otherwise, your best bet is simply updating the firmware to the latest version
3. That's up to you whether you made the right choice or not, as they're on completely different platforms and can't really be compared efficiently. The main reason to get the PLAY is the hardware buttons for gaming, and that it's android.

Thanks for the quick response can I ask it's all different here as far as flash it's brand new so what do I do to flash cm7 and would like to have a full clean install don't know if it's the same like on note boot into cwm and wipe date ect can that be done also is everything working in cm7 builds
Thanks agagin
Sorry one more are the games a cut down version of the Original or are they full

Well if you have the UK PLAY (R800i) I think you can still unlock it from http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ though I'm not entirely sure. If you can't unlock it there, you can visit http://unlock-bootloader.com/ and unlock it for $24 (he has to buy a credit for the program that costs $24 so he doesn't even profit). Unlocking will void your warranty (although there is a method to relock it). Custom kernels often include the CM recovery, although there is an app on the market that can install the recovery to the system partion instead (there is no dedicated recovery partition in the PLAY).
I'm not sure what you mean by "cut down versions" of the games, as most games have ad-versions and paid-versions (if you're expecting actual psp games to work without an official port then you're mistaken). You'd have to look at the android market to find the games you want, and look for games that say "Xperia PLAY optimized" (those games allow using the physical gamepad)

Wow ok thanks if honest I'll prob leave it for now as stock unless it's really worth it then I will what I ment by cut down games is say a game for psp and same one for the play will the one on play be cut down like FIFA 12 will it be different from psp to the play version thanks

Well, I've heard from various people on this forum that FIFA 12 indeed doesn't live up to the psp version. It really depends on how hard the developer works to port the game

[Q] Xperia Play Beginners guide?

Hey guys! I'm picking up an Xperia Play in a couple of days and was looking for some general advice about the phone. This will be my first Android device, I've been on WebOS/Garnet for my last two phones. I'm just a little overwhelmed with the options presented by the Play and Android in general. For instance, I'm not sure if I should root my phone or not - what are the advantages?
Any other general guides to Android/the Play would be wonderful if any such guides exist. I'm looking to deck this thing out with every emulator on the market as well as get the PSXperia hack up and running (I've downloaded the program, but can't figure out how to use it).
You can sense my overall noobishness in general, I'm sure. Any advice or tips about this device would be great. I'm really excited about the Play and getting comfortable with Android. Thanks everybody!

congratz im waiting for mine is the mail right now lol
rooting allows you to have full access to the file system sorta like a administrator
on a windows machine since out the box you cant edit files or remove bloatware without root you cant install certain programs from the market without root
also having root and unlocked bootloader allows you to flash a custom recovery image which will allow you to flash customs roms(a custom version of android dev by a user here on xda or anywhere in general)
yes i highly recommend but if you ever plan on returning the phone to verzion for example you will have to revert it back to stock
and for the program psxperia you need to install the latest version of java from java.com
and if your on a windows machine you double click the psxperiatool.JAR file
and it should run not sure on OSX
in the end you made a good choice on choosing android as mainstream as it became its still a powerful system way better IMO than ios or even webos
since android has so many developers theres gonna be an endless amount of programs
will post new finds myself etc

You cannot flash the recovery image directly or you will mess up boot partition, you need to flash a kernel with embedded recovery built in
Thanks for the info. I'm confused about the locked/unlocked bootloaders. How do I know which one I'll have? And how "easy" of a process is rooting the phone if I don't plan to install any custom roms or anything?
Also, how does transferring .apk files from my PC to the device work?

If you havent unlocked your bootloader yourself it is locked there are many risks and advantages to unlocking your bootloader, but if you dont intend to flash custom roms there really is no need, just like with root, if you dont know what it is, you probably wont need it
transfering .apk's from your pc is easy, just copy the .apk to your sd card, then use a file manager to find the .apk, tap on it and the installer will pop up , you need to tick unknown sources in settings though

If I root my phone, do I have to switch everything back in order to get updates? All I really want to root my phone for would be to remove bloatware/speed it up a bit, is there a better way than rooting?
There is plenty of tutorials here, I suggest that you read, read, and then......read some more

Thanks so much for this link, it's seriously going to help me while rooting my phone. This might be a dumb question, but bear with me - better safe than a bricked phone. The guide to rooting in that link says that I need to flash my Play to the .184 Generic UK firmware...am I understanding it correctly that I need flash this firmware onto my American Verizon Play? I want to make sure nothing is going to get screwed up regionally, as I'm going to want to keep getting OTA updates and all that.
Just to share my own experiences since I'm new to the Xperia Play (previously had an Acer Liquid.. crappy hardware but great community of devs.. anyways..)
I'd recommend rooting your phone off the bat - the simple reason is rooting will involve wiping your phone's data, so if you already have a few months of use that means having to restore everything which is tiresome. First thing when my phone arrived was follow the rooting guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090
After that however I wouldn't recommend messing around TOO much with custom firmwares and such etc.. get used to the phone as it is and figure out what you like, don't like. if your like me within a few weeks or months you'll want something new - this is when you might want to start looking at messing around with the phone - new home launchers or even a new ROM (if your phone can have it's boot loader unlocked, from what I understand mine can't). The games and Emulators should keep you busy as is
The only customizing I've done to my phone is rooting it with Gingerbreak and using the leaked Sony Launcher.
I realize this is a pretty nooby thing to do that annoys all the veterans, but I consider this to be a fairly crucial piece of information I need before I attempt to root my phone, so I'm just gonna go ahead and bump this thing before it gets lost in the shuffle.
In order to root with a locked bootloader on an American Verizon XPlay, I need to flash to the .184 generic UK firmware, then root, then OTA update, correct?

No. That method will not work on the r800x (verizon xplay) to root yours you will need to see [How-to] R800x Root
Dont worry about annoying people lol . Who cares what others think? Everyone has to start somewhere.
But it would be better with a stickied thread for new users to look @.
So now, instead of the 3 step process linked previously in this thread, I have to unlock the bootloader and do a whole bunch of other stuff? This method is like 100x more complicated. Is there no other way? I don't intend to install any custom roms, I strictly want to root solely for freezing bloatware.
No i dont think so. You would be better asking for help from other r800x owners in that thread.
The exploit gingerbreak uses on 2.3.2 was patched in 2.3.3 (worldwide) and was also patched by verizon before they released the handset on 2.3.2. Up untill the bootloader was unlocked on the r800x rooting was not possible.
Ask in that thread and you should recieve the help/info you are after.

Their is not such thing as a bricked phone
always is a way to fix it and usually its as simple as flashing a FTF
or whatever stock rom your device uses takes like 5 minutes tops lol
and logsemans guides will tell you anything you need to know
just use them for refrence

and if you head down the path of rooting and stuff
messing with files
you wont be able to get ota updates lol.

[Q] Want to install FreeXperia but unsure.

I'm seeing this in many different colors and I can't get this to gear up...
I already saw this thread HERE but it's for the Xperia X10...
Simply put, I want to have FreeXperia CM7 on my currently rooted Verizon CDMA Xperia Play R800x, but seeing all of this random stuff jumbled in the Development forum are driving me crazy... Before the Play, I had the LG Vortex, in which all you had to do was root the phone, and flash the All-In-One recovery for the Vortex through the terminal emulator from the market, and a friend of mine was using ROM Manager on his phone and the Xperia Play isn't even supported. Everything just doesn't seem like a "One-Click" and go anymore. Can anyone just lead me to the right files and direction to match my phone please?
Here is exactly what's on my About Phone menu.
Model Number: R800x
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: 7X30A-AAABQMAZM-1290_10-03
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected] #1
Build Number: 3.0.1.E.0.88
EDIT: I'm also using Ubuntu Linux, not Windows, if that can help.

You need to unlock your bootloader and install the clockworkmod recovery partition. After you have CWM you can install custom roms. The bootloader unlock is done by a user here called Alejandrissimo, for 24 dollars US. Do a search for his username and send a pm.

That's a bit expensive for just installing a recovery isn't it? If that's the only possible way, then I'll look into it.
You're not paying for the installation of recovery - you're paying to enable fastboot and unlock the bootloader on your r800x. I see you've come from a different manufacturer's device so here's my first tip of advice to you - forget everything you've learned about modding Android in the past. Sounds a little harsh, right? Well....
You need to understand that all carrier branded / sim locked Xperia Plays come with fastboot disabled. Because fastboot is disabled you cannot unlock your bootloader even using the Sony Ericsson approved bootloader unlocking method. So, you're probably thinking "great, now what?" Well, that's where Alejandrissimo comes into play....
There is a utility called SEtool that has the ability to interface with Xperia phones and enable fastboot, unlock the SIM and unlock the bootloader. There are two catches though. SEtool only works with the use of a proprietary USB hardware dongle and the SEtool user must purchase "unlock credits" in order to use the software. I'm dead serious.
So, Alejandrissimo (and another user by the name of Jinx13) actually has the dongle and can purchase unlock credits. In a nutshell, what happens is you send a PM to Alejandrissimo, setup a time so that he can remote control your computer, install some software onto your machine that allows for the use of the USB dongle over network (how else would you be able to use a hardware dongle you don't have?) and remote control of your machine..... kick back and let Alejandrissimo drive. You can see everything he's doing and he gives you some very simple instructions you need to follow to get the job done (it involves using a wire to create a bridge between a testpoint and a ground point on your phone and clicking on stuff when he tells you to).
Alejandrissimo is a very nice and patient person who has gained the trust of many people here at XDA so you can rest assured you'll receive excellent service from him.
You need to do some research for yourself so you understand the process though. visit his thread HERE.
So, once you get fastboot enabled and the bootloader on your phone unlocked you'll be ready to run ClockworkMod Recovery for your Play. From there, you'll be able to flash the CM7 kernel, the CM7 ROM and Google Apps.
I guess what I'm trying to say is forget everything you learned about modding Android cause it just isn't the same when dealing with Xperia devices.
Good luck.
I agree, Xperia models are nothing like the rest. I found it VERY confusing at first since all my previous experience was from the very first Samsung Galaxy (i7500).
Unfortunately, Android's wide variety of manufacturers and versions causes some inconsistencies.. it gives us a learning curve when switching devices, but the overall freedom is worth it, compared to closed source OS's like iOS and Blackberry.
The best thing you can do is read, then read some more.. These forums are an enormous bank of knowledge. You just need to know where to look, and who to ask.

[Q] Just got my Xperia Play - Now what?

Hi,
I just got my xperia play today
Wanted to know what to do next?
FreeXperia is basically CM7 for the Xperia range. Does everything work?
I know that Doom's Kernel's are supposed to be the best for these devices.
At present it's running stock firmware, Not rooted it yet but the Zergrush method seems the way to go?
I haven't un-locked the bootloader yet either. So the device is completely stock.
What's your recommendations on choice of Firmware / Kernel to use?
I would like to have everything working
I'm going to have a play around with the device tonight but will come back on here tomorrow and see what you guys say is the best way forward.
I have a 32Gb card at home ready to put in the device so I'll have plenty of room for Games
What are the best Free Games to download? I have already started to get the Free one's of the EA store do Gameloft have anything Free?
Thanks

Don't know a way around the "Bootloader unlock: No" thing. You may wanna search for this.
Most good games are very big files so you will need an SD card (I'm surprised your Play didn't come with one though).
Highest android version available is the latest possible ICS release. 4.0.3 seems like a common one with custom ROMs right now since that's what the Beta uses.
All versions of the Play can be unlocked, rooted, filled with custom ROMs and modified as much as almost any other android phone!
Hope this helped!
Look to unlock-bootloader.com for information on unlocking your bootloader. As for games that don't need to go on sd card... I've been playing a game called Aeon Avenger, but it automatically installed to my sd. I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't have one, and it would be worth a try, if it wasn't a paid app.
To find games in the Play Store that make use of the control pad, search "Xperia Play optimized."
Go google for Alejandrissimo or Jinx13 I used Jinx13 when I unlocked my bootloader ; but you can only go up to 4.0.3 is the highest i think (correct me if im wrong ).

ROM not showing on CWM...

Alright so here's my problem: I unzipped ColaROM and made it into a folder into recovery. But CWM isn't finding it. It sees the backups I made with the CWM Recovery/Backup menu so it isn't completely broken. I have NOT played with any settings.
I have an R800x, currently UNACTIVATED but it will be activated on Verizon once I figure this all out.
Here's what I've done to the phone:
1. Unlock Bootloader
2. Install DoomKernel CDMA v2 and it's WiFi module.
3. Installed Xperia NXT Light Edition (THIS IS A GMS ROM. I was merely testing "Install from Zip". It works, but phone isn't activated and I assume it won't work with Verizon.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue or can recommend an extremely light weight (.ZIP) ROM to go with DoomKernel? I don't want flash effects or anything like that, I just want it to be fast so I can load emulators on it and play without hassle.
I always stick to my own heavily debloated and performance enhanced stock Tom.

So 2.x would be fine for performance for these emulators? Do i need to root it to have emulators? Also, where can I find them? The wiki's emulator link only has N64 paid emulator left on it. How does once "debloat" the device?

To be honest. From a gaming approach GB in the way to go. No doubt about it. And I run the following emulators currently.
Tiger Arcade (NeoGeo, CPS1, CPS2 Emu(
GameBoid (GameBoy Advance Emu)
Gensoid (Sega Genesis)
Mupen64 PLUS AE (Nintendo 64)
NESoid (Nintendo NES)
PCE.emu (Turbograpfx-16 / PC-Engine)
SNESoid (Super Nintendo)
All these emu's run excellent on my phone with the ROM I linked to above. You are welcome to try my ROM, if not no pressue, just thought I would share it in case you decided to
Thanks for the help!
What is exactly is that ROM? I am new to recovery and such and;
A) Don't know how to use it
B) Does it have the bloatware removed from Android or is it just the same as a new Xperia Play with root?

That's not true. I've been using Cola 6 on my R800x with DoomKernel for two months without any connectivity issues. I don't use data, but I do make calls and send texts.
That would be my recommendation for others as well. The only issue I have had with this ROM (and it may not be widespread) is that my dialer does not search my contacts as I dial (for example, I dial area code and I'm not shown all of the contacts with that area code), but I got around that by simply using a different dialer app.
The latest CDMA JB ROMs seem quite nice as well. General performance seems to be much better than ICS ROMs from my experience, but I also experienced more problems and far worse battery life, which is why I've gone back to GB with the Cola ROM for the time being. That was a few weeks ago though, so I'm planning on trying the latest JB ROMs and Kernels again very soon.
... I'll always keep a nandroid backup of my current Cola setup though. It works great. =)
First of all thanks to everyone who has helped me so far. I think I have it down but can someone double check my plan of attack now that I have my phone? This is the order I'd do it, but I don't know if it's correct.
If it matters, I am going to use is...

What To Do To Get Custom Kernel / ROM
1. Unlock bootloader through Sony
2. Root device using SuperOneClick
3. Download XParts from Store, create backup of stock ROM from here and save it to computer just in case. Do this by pushing volume down at startup.
4. Install ROM by putting file in \clockwork\backup\ and using same menu but to install it.
5. Flash Kernel with Flashtool
The ROM is still up in the air... I want a ROM that doesn't have all the bloatware that I see on the phone now that I have it, or at least doesn't have it running:
-Preinstalled games (no interest in any of them)
-Verizon Stuff (If it is worth removing)

I should be more specific. I am trying to unlock my bootloader on my slow windows machines (I am on a Linux Machine typing this). I thought I couldn't because Sony's website says if I am missing that line I can't unlock the bootloader. Waiting to download JDK and Android SDK to try to unlock bootloader.

If you download the unlock tool from Wotan Server:
http://static.wotanserver.com/downloads/X_Unlock_Tool_Setup_Wotan.exe
And install it will install the fastboot drivers and files. Then all you will need to do is go into fastboot mode (power off hold back button and plug in your usb cable, to enter fastboot mode)
Then you can boot into the temporary recovery listed in Method 2 via the fastboot command:
fastboot boot recovery.img
See below.

When I unlocked my bootloader using the same method I lacked any lines stating whether or not my bootloader was unlocked. I remember reading somewhere that Verizon hid these lines in their r800x's. Also, why are you trying to install flashtool? Are you trying to downgrade your phone?
The SuperOneClick root method only works if your phone's on 2.3.3, if it updated to 2.3.4 then you would have to use flashtool to downgrade. 2.3.4.
Okay I have finally managed to flash DoomKernel... I used a guide off a different site that explained it a bit better and all in one place.
*Edit* And internet was the issue... have Xparts, installed CWM... but I made the folders like ColaROM says too but it isn't showing up in CWM Recovery menu. Thoughts?
