Hey guys,
I'm sitting here with a little problem with my GNexus...
My girlfriend and I bought it in combination with a Telekom-contract.
Everything works fine except the call quality via Skype. But only with her device.
We tried it via wifi but the only case when it happens is if she's online with her mobile data... then the quality is cut-off and sounds robotic. It works with my phone and we also got the same speed results with speedtest.net so we're pretty helpless here.
Anybody got an idea or solution?
Thanks in advance,
Fabian

does wifi to wifi work ok?
does 3g to 3g make a difference who's calling and who's answering?

Wifi to wifi works perfectly...and it doesnt matter who's the calling one, we tried it in every way...

guess you're limited by bandwidth then...i also didn't get great quality out of 3G videocalling, guess it's normal.
does it work with other phones on the same network?

That also was our first guess..but we tried it with my phone, too (also with Telekom) and got better results. We made an internet speed-test with both phones and got the same results. :S

What are your download/upload speeds when you do a speed test? What's your ping time?

Kilobits, or kilobytes?
If it's 300/100 kilobits/s, that would explain it completely. 300 is just barely enough to receive a moderately low quality video stream. 100 is completely insufficient to upload streaming video.
If it's kilobytes, you still might have some choppiness on the upstream.

yep, kilobytes.
But we didn't even try video-calling.
Only voice, nothing else..if it didnt work with video we wouldn't even mind

even though 300KB/s should suffice, the high latency and bandwidth variations (packet loss, TTL, etc...) of 3G will negatively influence the quality.
your problem is the mobile network, not Nexus or Skype.
100ms and more for a connection oriented stream of any kind will produce dropouts...

you can go back to the shop and ask to test with another device, maybe there's something wrong with it?

I'm currently located in New York running CDMA Galaxy Nexus with ~ -80 db.
Why is it that when I try to play HQ videos on Youtube, it is always buffering. Does anyone else have this issue?
BTW, ran a speed test and I'm getting about 2.5megs down on average, so its not like I have a bad connection.
Not sure. I watched the video where the FedEx driver threw that Samsung monitor over that guys fence with no buffer...lol.
cool. would be nice if anyone in my area is having issues with youtube videos loading.
Depends on your location and the quality of the signal. There are places where I get full bars of 4G and 30+ mbps and places where I'll only get 1 or 2 and much less .. how many bars do you have?

actually, that is kinda bad i have a -107 connection on LTE and i get 7.5
the 2 range sounds like 3g to me, you might be in a bad area =/

i said 2.5 megs down, thats 25Mbps...
i see, then maybe an issue with the youtube server?
the numbers from speed test are reliant on the server your connecting to
Are you speaking Mbps? Because 2.5Mbps isn't that fast. What exactly is the speed test showing?
Edit: I mean that that to say you shouldn't be buffering with 25Mbps.

could be a youtube issue, application side.
i had buffering issues on my original gnexus as well (replaced original as it had a dead pixel this morning at verizon store).

FYI, 2.5MB/s = 25mbps.
Yeah, thats why I'm on the phone with them. I have faster internet on LTE than my home internet connection yet I am unable to buffer HQ videos...

Not that matters but your conversion is wrong. 8bits in 1byte so 2.5MB/s = 20mbps (or 25mbps = 3.125 MB/s).
so none of you guys are having any buffering issues with HQ youtube clips?

It depends. Some use 10:1 to cover overhead, and in some forms of data communications there's a start bit and a stop bit in each packet, making it 10bits per byte.
Generally, those who divide by 10 (I do) are ball parking an estimate, not giving you exact figures.
YouTube runs and looks beautiful on my lte gnex
Im in NY on the LTE Nexus and the highest dl speeds I got were in the 30s. No buffering problems, not even on 3g
FYI, are you guys watching Youtube videos in HD? You need to do that in General Settings - Enable HQ
Went up to tier 2 with VZW CSR, they can't resolve the issue. Opened a trouble ticket with them. Hopefully the next update will resolve the issue, if not, its going to have to be returned.
I'm pretty disappointed with the Nexus release. Along with the display defect, Samsung could have done a better job of Quality Control.
I was at a verizon store and noticed the YouTube HD buffering. Speedtest was 25+ mbps download, but it buffered every few seconds, wtf!?
Funny thing is that I am noticing buffering at home too, on Verizon FIOS. Is there something wrong with YouTube these days?

i think its a youtube application issue. they should probably update it. hopefully the new radio update will resolve buffering issue as well.
Could just be Youtube too... I get this all the time on the desktop version too.
Hello,
When I do a test with the SpeedTest app, it gives me fast speeds (10~20mbps), but very high ping. I'm getting 500~700ms ping from using this app to connect to a server that is only 2 km away. I have tried other servers and gotten the same results.
When I ping google.com, I'm getting an average of 300ms.
I live in NYC, and the cell tower is actually very close, according to OpenSignal app. I see others getting 30~60ms times on T-Mobile HSPA, so this seems out of the ordinary.
I get normal ping times when connected to wifi.
Anyone know what is causing this?
I get it too its nothing to worry about I think its just a bug and not accurate sometimes. Nothing to worry about.

I get it too. But I don't care b/c ping matters to me if I'm playing multiplayer games. I never play games on my S2 except on rare occasions. So long as I get my data, I am satisfied.

No idea about the speed test app, but I don't think pinging google would result in a glitch. It seems there is a delay in loading websites as well.
I even get lower ping on EDGE....

That's odd.. thought I set it to Mbps..
It's an order down, so 2000 kbps.
Maybe it's because of where you live. Ping is how long it takes to speak with the outside servers, heavy congestion higher ping.
I live outside of Orlando and get 50 or less. With about 20mbps do speeds and over 2 up...

I realize the release is brand new and has already been pulled but I'm curious to find out what people will think after using it a few days. Have you encountered any improvement or degredation in call quality, data quality, battery life? Sorry about the number of choices but some people think polls are skewed for a result and always say I should have had this or that as an option so I tried to think of as many options as possible since I can not add more choices after the fact.
Battery life hasn't improved for me but could be the rom I'm on (patient Zero )
I don't lose data as much now but still to early to tell. Appears better.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Subjectively, seems worse to me, but better handoff to 3g.
Same reception as FA02/FA02. Quicker handoff though. Favors 3G over 4G.
Battery life hasn't really improved nor dbm's. One thing I did notice was 3G to 4G handoff was quicker.

Ditto on that as well. Very sensitive. My 4G is the same as my Razr Maxx and D4. Cross Fingers!
I noticed I had 4G in an area I couldn't before, other than that nothing really changed for me. One of the guys I talk to on G+ says that he never got 4G in his house before and his wifes Rezound always did, but since updating the radios last night he gets 4G inside his home.
I'm still getting random drops from 4G, but the passing off onto 3G seems to be a lot faster. Also I noticed that I get more bars in area where I had less (ex. 2 bars of 4G is now 4 bars of 4G), but still had the same dbms.
Subjectively I feel it helped tremendously. Haven't had a single data drop all day when before I would get several drops a day. I also have better reception.
Why did it get pulled?

I've been on 4.0.4 for months now but I did flash the radios from the official update and my signal is better.

No noticable difference for me. Although my house is right across the street from an LTE tower in a park.

dBm is how strong of a signal your phone is getting. (if you want a higher dBm hold it higher/different ) That should be more dependent on hardware than software though, what's sometimes more important is the Signal to Noise Ratio and the Carrier Interference & Noise Ratio (SNR & CINR). Which is basically how easy your phone can hear the tower.
It's like trying to yell across a room that is full of drunk people, whoever you're talking to may be able to hear you yelling but they have no idea what you're saying. Same way for cell phones if you're in a very crowded area.
Something you guys may want to look at. So I was going to test the radios today. I sat here on lean kernel and AOKP and was getting between 86-89dbm of 4G with the new radios which was better but I figured what the hell and flashed the IMM76K build and now I get 71-74dbm with lean kernel. I don't know if everyone is going to see results like this but it is definitely worth a shot if you are seeing low dbm with the new radio.
Speedtest is now giving me 20mb down when the highest I could get before was 12. I know this sounds to good to be true, so don't believe me if you think so but I am just reporting what I am seeing.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I'm not surprised the results are mixed but I was hoping for better.
Radios
For some reason my signal starts off really bad then goes back to normal. I have noticed it favored 3g more so than 4g. Normally on my drive home from work, as soon as i hit the highway it hits 4g, i was a good 10 miles down the road, still showed 3g, so toggled lte off then on and boom back to 4g, albeit weak for a minute then back to normal. Speed tests show slightly faster, but that's negligible for me. Could just be network congestion at the time the other tests were run.
On a side rant i did notice something slightly strange. Installed bamf 1.25 simultaneously on my nexus (had since launch date) and a certified pre-owned replacement for a friend, which of course was freshly rooted by me si the "sd card" was empty other than the roms, and the fresh phone blazed through the installed about 30 seconds quicker than mine and also rebooted faster. I clicked both phones at the same time, both using 5.8.0.0 touch recovery. Nothing to do with the radio, but felt like sharing. Guess i might completely wipe my phone and see if it speeds her up!
In Dallas, 4/5 bars.

When I ran some speed tests yesterday I did notice a couple odd ones over 1000ms PING still testing at ~20,000 ( kbps + / - 10%) while the rest were well under 100ms..:silly:
Isn't that where the LTE deployment should more consistently excel in latency & building penetration?:good:
Best so far at a friends house. Very strong signal

I really hope there is an update to the Wi-Fi driver. Comparing it to my HTC one, s3 and nexus 4, it always has a lot weaker strength and speeds which is a little disappointing since its WiFi only. Has anyone else noticed this? In many spots the Wi-Fi will not even show where my other device still have half strength. I LOVE this tab but this only one issue is bugging me

No, this has much better wifi than the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 has wifi driver issues.
The Wifi in this tablet has been the best I have ever owned, laptops and phones included. The range is incredible. What I thought was a dead space in my home isn't with this.

Yeah it's called the WiFi signal indicator in the top right of your screen. Not trying to be an ass, but that's what its there for.
I have fantastic WiFi on my device. I get better upload speed on it than any other device in my house.
Try changing the settings from Auto select to 2.5ghz only under advanced in WiFi settings.
