my objective is to change the png images, so that the phone will have a black theme. I know that there are black themes around. I have a stock t-mobile ROM, themes are rare to come by. I will try to make my own.
Not sure if what I am doing is decompiling or extracting

Without having to download THIS messaging app? The messaging app in my ROM has direct call and a couple of other goodies that I really like... just the colors are very boring and plain! Any help is very much appreciated, thanks.
The standard way of theming is open the mms. Apk in a zip viewer. Either win rar or 7 zip, then find the area that holds folders named draw able hdpi. Extract ONLY THE ICONS AND IMAGES You want to change. Font extract the whole apk. Then, open the images in photo shop or any editing program, change the colors as you please, save, (DONT CHANGE IMAGE NAME OR TYPE), then drop them back into the apk in the folder you found them and save changes to the zip. Once that's does, go into system/app, rename the end of the name .Bak. So apkname.Apk.bak
Then just copy and paste it into system app and then give it correct permissions if it doesn't already and then reboot

Try using gosms or handcent. I believe they have theming capabilities.
All Battery results are on a 6300mah battery, unless otherwise noted!

I used Handcent since my EVO 3D days but I really like the 4.2.2 Messaging app.... I just hate that I can't theme it. No need for a 3rd party messaging app... I can live with the plain colors, I'd just rather be able to theme it if possible!!
Then if Reapers response is too complicated the answer to your question is then No. There's no other way to do it.

Sorry, i made it sound over complicated lol.. just find the thing you want to change and then save it and put it back and save the apk and then just put it on your phone..
Why wouldn't you just download that app? It makes it a lot easier on you to theme the stuff the way you want. :what:

Decompile system ui.apk, and replace the icons in res/drawable hdpi with the ones u want
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
or UOT, under icons, you can select your own custom uni colour ones.
you can change a whole lot more than signal bars if you like
extract systemUI.apk as above, and you can find individual png files to match colours.

I thought decompiling was confusing too at first, but it really isn't.
In your case all you have to do is extract the apk with winrar, just like you do with a zip file.
Then just replace the pngs and zip it back up.

Is it possible to change the color of the icons in the contact list? The green is killing my b/w theme & I would like to change them to white.
Any input would be appreciated.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yes, it is possible
Probably inside framework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, or SecPhone.apk

I looked in SecContacts.apk.
Found, inside the drawable-sw359dpi-xhdpi folder, the icon that appears to match the one in the screenshot.
"ic_call.png"
There's a few others with the exact same icon in that folder and I have no idea which one Samsung's call log/contacts pulls from so I'd just change them all. (I hate how many redundant images exist in the Touchwiz Framework.)

Yes, extract the apk and find the images, rename the new ones accordingly, then drag and drop them back into the right folder in the apk, done. Nothings easy until you learn how.

@XperienceD
Don't think that's easy... I also tried looking for these same icons before to no avail. AFAIK it's hidden deeply into androids system files since before 4.3 it's still black and white while when I updated to 4.4 it became colored icons. So far I have searched textinput-tng.apk, systemui.apk, framework-res.apk. SemcGenericUXPres.apk to no avail.

Still a no The smileys in gtalk is different than the one on Xperia Keyboard. Try using the emojis in hangouts chat and see the difference I would assume it's stored in a .so library file encoded into a byte array or something else.

Not sure why you would assume that when the majority of images are stored in the res folders. I've decompiled the Hangouts.apk to have a look and found them in the drawable-nodpi folder.

Yeah I know there are emoji icons in hangouts apk but trust me it's not what Sony uses. Even if you try changing the icons there it won't work other than the smiley option in the hangouts app. But the sony ones will still persist on any text input field on your android device. In fact you can totally delete the Hangouts apk and still have the emojis untouched
Here's a screenshot just look at the difference on the icons. The on on the pop up is from the hangouts emoji and when i pressed on them the result is different on the textbox
God knows then, but I'd bet they're not hidden and the wrong images are being changed.
