extract a tar?????? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So for mobile Odin how do I extract the tar file on my phone? I want to flash ICS but make sure I have a way out, since I'm not anywhere near a computer...... I downloaded a el29 ROM for Odin and it will tell me that the.... well I can't remember what it said now but is there a straight tar file that doesn't need to be extracted? I saw the stock el29 acs one but its a zip....

If the file is already in .tar file format there is no need to extract it. If the file is a zip, you can use a program such as 7-zip or winrar. Since you said you are not near a computer I would reccomend using an app called root explorer. In root explorer, navigate to the zip, long hold, and then select extract. Hope this helps!

I thought they were but mobile Odin says can't find partition.... so I thought it needed the tar. Extracted?.. I was using root explorer and it wasn't giving me an extract option, so I assume because it wasn't needing extracting?

I've tried... nothing says extract. Guess I will wait till I'm around a computer and extract the file then put that on my sd card so I have it. I have kernals and modems that mobile Odin will flash. This el29 ROM doesn't work. Just says partition could not be found in file. Oh well.

Honestly, if I was you, I would wait until you are in front of a computer. If you are using sfhub's it is a whole one click setup contained within the file.

Right, and that is what I am using. I am downloading el26 now to see if mobile Odin accepts that, if not I can wait. I just don't want to be stuck, lol, gotta flash every so often lol!

How to flash roms with Mobile Odin Pro

I have read that some people prefer to use Mobile Odin Pro to flash roms, kernels and such in place of CWM. I know how to use it when the files are in the tar format but I am wondering if there is a way to flash roms that are in the zip format and made for CWM? Am I missing something or did I misunderstand what I read?
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
unfortunately if its in zip I believe its only through cwm. just like regular odin.
OK, so the roms have to be in the tar format. Is there a way to repack the zip into a tar that can be flashed via Mobile Odin Pro?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Not really sure about this but if you use root explorer and press and hold on a file it will give you an option to convert to tar file or something like that. Idk if that would work or not but just happened to notice it last night.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
although rootexplorer does format it into tar it won't flash via odin or mobile odin. the only way I know of is to have a linux partition on your computer. other than having linux it won't work. it may be in tar format but it needs to know where to put those file in which place. and just converting it to tar doesn't work. I have even tried putting a pit file in with the files in a tar and it didn't work.
OK, that's what I thought but I figured I'd ask. Thanks for your answers.

lol thats not true.. yes .zips are made for cwm, but if you notice in mobile odin pro it can actually open certain types of files and extract the different parts of it to flash such as kernel, modem, etc. etc. this is how i flashed a zip through mobile odin pro, however for whatever reason gave me issues with the modem.. on ICS, I had to flash rogue fb17 kernel to get cwm back, then flashed the fb21 modem through cwm. either way, there is a way to extract the files from the .zip to be flashed in mobile odin.. there is a setting in the app that says open and extract the files.. have a look see! besides all that, I love mobile odin and prefer to use it when possible over using cwm anyday..
well I do not doubt that you used it. however I have many roms in. zip format. when I try to use the extract feature the only ones I can extract from are the. tar and tar.md5 files. maybe I'm messing up or something.
I have tried to open zip files using the method you suggested and it's like it doesn't see the zip file in the directory I put it in.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
when I do it I look in the directory and it only sees the tar files I have of the stock tars I have in the same directory. I have looked into it on chainfires thread and it makes no mention from what I have seen of flashing rom zips.

ya it is a full rom. but its in tar format. I was under the impression from the other poster in here zip were flashable too. I realize that what cwm is for. I have used mobile odin many times. and I'm almost positive it does not flash zips. just figured if he did it he might want to share.
hmmm
My plan was to only use m.o. to flash, (after root via 2c) so I'll have to figure this out...

I could flash my kernel using 'zImage' file using Mobile ODIN.
TLR Version. Don't. If it was meant for CWM use it in CWM.
I don't think you guys are going to have any luck with that. When (Mobile) odin flashes a tar file it is flashing a factoryfs.img. When CWM flashes a zip it copies the files over.
You could, in theory*, convert the flash-able zip into a flash-able tar by moving the files in the zip into a proper factoryfs.img or a system.img... but its not really an easy task and you're VERY likely to end up with a (almost**) permanent brick and or paperweight.
So just don't. You can flash Kernels and full system restores tars with it, but other than that, I wouldn't play with it.
* I say in theory because I'm not gonna test it. I don't see why I wouldn't, but there is no reason to risk anything.
**You could probably unbrick it with a JTAG, but that is a whole different mess.
Clearing cache before flashing
I'm a beginner. My last cell phone was very old and could only make calls, and I jumped into the s3 because I heard it's a good phone.
I've figured out how to root it and unlock it, and I have installed mobile odin pro. I copy the zipped rom directly to my phone and start mobile odin pro, which asks me if I want to unzip the rom and install it. Well, yes, I do. So it goes about doing its thing, reboots, and fails. I have tried installing three different roms with the same result each time.
My question is this: will mobile odin pro automatically clear the cache, the darvik cache and so on? Or should I do this manually from within the mobile odin pro app before flashing the rom?
Any help will be much appreciated
If you have an s2 this is not the forum for you. Just a heads up. Anything flashable from this s2 forum will wreck your phone

[Q] is it possible to flash back to stock without PC?

The micro USB port on my phone is jacked up and I need to flash back to stock ROM,unroot and stock Android recovery so I can get a replacement . Is there a way to do it? My PC dosent recognize the phone when its plugged in. currently im running
EL 26 modem
EK02 kernel
Build Number Gingerbread EK02
Cwm recovery
Maybe MobileODIN?
(sorry, @ work, can't take the time to search n link here for you)
I would guess off the top of my head that M-odin and something from sfhub would do this?
Seeing as I've never used it, I am sure someone could clarify and/or say I'm full of ****e. ;-)

Yeah downloading the stock.tar to your phone and using Mobile Odin works great, just make sure that you don't have inject superuser clicked if you want to return it.
it looks everything needs to be done with CWM (rogue) or mobile odin.
Search the forum first to find the unrooted stock rom, modem and kernel.
Also, remove the odin count if it's non zero (if don't know, search 'triangle away').
If everything is downloaded on your phone or pc (you can connect your pc using es file explorer and move the file to your phone), be sure that kernel is applied at the very last moment.
The steps would be,
1. install zip file from sdcard - if you have a zip file which everything is on one zip, then you are just good to go.
2. Separate zip file - rom or modem first and kernel last within the same recovery session (without reboot)
If you use the mobile odin, everything should be done at the same time but I do not recommend this method because sometimes, the mobile odin misses some component and it could be a reason of phone bricked.

That's the reason why I'm recommending the 'triangle away'. This works without usb jig. If you odin count is bigger than zero, only use it. Flashing thru zip file does not increase the odin count.

Sounds right:
This is below is all from sfhub he wrote instructions on his latest oneclick for using mobile odin:
Get the Full restore for EL29 here

"Android - Install ZArchiver, then use it to unpack the ODIN OneClick 7zip self-extractor file in this section (long press *-oc-sfx.exe, Open as archive, Odin-OC, select *-OneClick.exe, Extract). Use Mobile ODIN to Open File the resulting *-OneClick.exe file. Mobile ODIN issue - modem might not flash consistently. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows ODIN specific (steps 3, 4, 5, 6)."

I don't know, I think you'd be fine with the EL29 too. I make sure I use the links from sfhub to get to stock. I can vouch for those - Bone Stock, Odin Count to Zero and no Triangle. That guys deserves loads of thanks for saving many an ass, mine included. And his instructions are dead simple and right on. Just take some time and read, read and then read again before you do anything. Then you should be OK.

The oc-sfx.exe files are actually 7zip self-extractors. When you double-click on them, they decompress the actual OneClick.exe file. Think of oc-sfx.exe as a zip file. You wouldn't feed a zip file directly to Mobile ODIN. You would unpack the zip file first, then give the file to Mobile ODIN. You can either unpack the oc-sfx.exe file on windows by double-clicking on it, or on your phone by using ZArchiver from the market.
Once you have extracted/decompressed the OneClick.exe file, feed that to Mobile ODIN.
Sorry for any confusion, but if I left these uncompressed, the files (and downloads) would be twice what they are now.

Yeah , I was really confused because I didnt know his oneclick.exe files can be used also with mobile odin,AND lol mostly cause for some reason I STILL tried opening it from mobile Odin but it wouldnt accept the file ,but thats because I unzipped it with Androzip. its what I already had on my phone and I thought it would do the job. Once I used Zarchive to unzip the one click.exe it DOES recognize the file! Now im just waiting for it to charge a lil

Mobile Odin help -- please :(

Seem to have gotten myself in another bind :/
Ok, so I flashed a ICS ROM and as usual I want to flash something else(I admit its a bad addiction! ). Unfortunately, my OEM cable isnt working and so odin can't recognize the phone!
SO I have mobile odin installed but I need the correct files. Never had to use it until now, I thought I had a correct kernel/recovery to flash but it says "partition not recognized"
So please mind that I will have to download the files DIRECTLY from my phone. I will seriously LOVE anyone who can help me out
Go to the wiki, found in the sticky section, you're looking for el26 kernel with cwm tar file. In mobile Odin, click kernel and find the file. Check md5 and go. During reboot, Press and hold volume up and power till you get to cwm. Do your wipes and flashing there. Good luck!

Assuming you are using something from the OneClick thread, you need to unpack the file first, either double-click the .exe in windows to unpack or use zarchiver on android. The resulting file can be use with Mobile ODIN using Open File.

There are several apps like Wifi File Browser that you can install on your phone that will allow you to transfer files back and forth from your pc/phone if necessary. Really nice to use too.

[ODIN] true Samsung flash files from Kies

These file I got when flashing T-Mobile version T999, so DO NOT flash it over other variants.
Prerequisites: you must have Samsung drivers installed. You can install Kies and/or T999 tool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682
You will need this tool because the flash files are 100% stock and they will remove custom kernel and root, and custom recovery.
Are you ready?
Here are the steps:
Download the essential .zip file and extract it.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/iah2ig
Download these 4 parts of the PDA file (the 5th is in essential.zip file) and put them into the extracted folder
001: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xyqaom
002: http://www.sendspace.com/file/tfhcr8
003: http://www.sendspace.com/file/2mttve
004: http://www.sendspace.com/file/z7uhru
Run "hjsplit" and locate .001 file and it will take care the rest.
Press and hold volume down+home button while powering on. When the phone displays "downloading..." means it's in Odin mode. Connect the phone with USB cable.
Run Odin (either included in the zip file or use tool), check PDA and locate the combined file.
Press start and wait until it finished. Flashing PDA file DOES NOT erase your personal files and settings.
Run tool if you want root back.
Note: everything will return to 100% stock EXCEPT the flash counter, so you need "triangle away" and root your phone in order to reset the flash counter.

I never heard LH2, but I experienced some troubles that I have to fully flash S3 with Kies (the one from the sticky does not work) and everything was GONE, so I have to find the original flash files from temp folder and I got all of them.
Since I have Odin from flashtool, I just use it to flash PDA file and everything keeps intact except root, custom kernel and recovery (they can be fixed easily).
The original PDA file is 1150MB, so I have to divide it into 5 so they fit sendspace.
I don't know about anyone else but my anti-virus went crazy downloading the "essentials". Can mods check this please?
How is this any different that what we can get from sammobile?

Put your phone in download mode and connect to your computer. Then pen the .exe file. It runs a custom version of odin that is baked into the .exe file. It will do the update for you on its own.
CF Auto Root can be used to get root access after you hoar as well.
