I'm new to XP, I got duped into a Verizon phone, help me unlock it. - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, I'm sorry to load the noob questions on you but in a nutshell, I want to be able to update my phone to the 2.3.4 update that Verizon isn't allowing us to have.
I want to be able to purchase games without having to go through their sh*tty v z app, I would like to update to other official releases like 4.0 when it arrives.
Right now my concern is 2.3.4 I've read about boot unlockers and roots. Which do I want to do, if either?
Thanks in advance

To get 2.3.4 on verizon, you must unlock your bootloader because only custom roms or stock UK roms have 2.3.4+. You can still update to 4.0 once it comes out, by using flashtool

http://xperiagamer.com/Beginners-Guides/
Very nice guide(s) to rooting, unlocking your bootloader, etc.

There is currently no working ROM for 2.3.4 on Verizon play. You never have to buy apps they Verizon (if you root the phone you can remove the Verizon store) (in fact, they get taxed if you buy them through Verizon instead of the Android market)

[Q] Advice: Rooted 2.3.2 or upgrade 2.3.3 :-(

Hi all - glad to find a decent size community of Arc owners even if it isn't huge like other devices have. Because the Arc is a bit "limited" at this time, it makes me especially appreciate the advice and support here even more.
I need your advice and maybe this discussion will help some others facing a similar dilemma.
OK - I've had my Arc a few days and I'm getting itchy feet - I want to set-up my Arc but I'm having trouble having to compromise on one thing or the other.
So, as I have a branded model and can't unlock the bootloader, I only have 3 options for now:
1. Stay with 2.3.2 and have root - I do miss apps that require root, and of course, I really want to get rid of the bloatware. Even more than that, I HATE the Orange branding (how the hell do they manage to make a screen so ugly with the black and orange crap )
2. Update to 2.3.3 - of course, I want the benefits of the updates, even though I haven't run in to the camera bug and other issues yet (have to do some reading to find out about those). But then I'd have NO root. On the other hand, I have read of problems with Gingerbreak anyway.
3. Sell my branded Arc and buy a sim-free one (bit of hassle and not sure I'd unlock the bootloader at this stage anyway (until we see whether we will get custom roms with locked bootloader, etc).
4. Drastic option - sell the phone and buy a Desire HD. I have never touched a Desire HD but was considering this because I really want the 4.2" or 4.3" screen. I chose the Arc because it looks great, is feather light (can't believe the weight of it still), screen quality compared to Desire HD and of course, because of the camera/video. I won't pay Galaxy S2 money and there isn't anything else with the Arc screen size so I think the Desire HD would be my only choice (but I don't really want to change phones).
So, what have others chosen to do and why ?? And, I'd be interested to know what peoples view on the future of the Arc is -- if I'm stuck with the choice of only rooting phone or having updates, I think I'd probably switch now. But, I am an optimist and I love the Arcs hardware so I'm hoping its worth sticking with it.
Look forward to hearing your views about which way to go NOW and the likely FUTURE of the Arc.
You should have updated SE Arc to 2.3.3. After Arc was updated, it works better, no battery drain, all softwares run stable.
Arc is better than Desire HD a lot of things such as Desire HD has radio non stable, can not use camera at night and more .

Yes - I agree with you based on what I have read about Desire HD. But the flexibility of custom roms, overclocking, root, etc is of some value too - and I could buy the Desire HD for about €100 less, therefore, giving me some cash to buy a compact camera.
Right now - my choice is about whether I have the update to 2.3.3 or stick with 2.3.2. and root. I read that some users on XDA forums have decided not to update because they want to stay rooted. I suppose I'm interested in why, and what are the pros and cons.
On the issues about the future for the Arc, I'm interested in speculation or peoples views about what might happen.

I updated but have reverted back to 2.3.2 because some phones cant be boot unlocked, and while I would rather be up to date the need to be rooted outweighs it. I used 2.3.3 since last Tuesday and have only just reverted back last night so couldn't really comment on the differences.
I'm just about to reflash too and reroot because I've messed something up while removing stuff lol, I just wish we had xRecovery to make this process simpler.
i will recommend going to 2.3.3 by updating via SEUS or PC Companion...and then unlock your bootloader and then root u r arc because 2.3.3 is better firmware and also i have heard that custom rom's are being developed for arc
Hi - You can use flashtool to put the UK Generic 2.3.3. ROM onto your phone.. avoids all the Orange bloatware.. Won't be rooted of course, but actually runs extremely well..
I have a bootloader unlocked one so I've installed the pre rooted UK Generic, but have only used it to mod the battery icon in the notification bar and the screen off CRT animation.. haven't actually removed anything at all...

Thanks Iceman (and all).
Just another quick question (I have searched but no answers found) - what is the difference between global and UK generic ?? The main thing is that I remove the Orange branding but would be nice to know the difference anyway.
global has more language options the uk genric
Iceman,
You said these.
a. "use flashtool to put the UK Generic 2.3.3. ROM onto your phone"
b. "I have a bootloader unlocked one so I've installed the pre rooted UK Generic"
Just want to confirm some details to what you said and mean --
a. means that you used flashtool to put the Generic 2.3.3 ROM (which is an .ftf file) onto your phone. This is a non-rooted (ie Generic 2.3.3 ROM)
but then in order to have your phone rooted, you had your bootloader unlocked then - b. installed the pre rooted UK Generic - meaning which downloaded the .IMG file and on top of using flashtool (mention in a.) you used fastboot to flahs this pre-rooted .IMG file onto your phone.
Are those basically correct?
Thanks anyway!
Sorry to interrupt here but I have a 3 branded arc which I got today. I flashed the uk generic rom to get rid of the bloatware and it worked a treat.
Ok, its not rooted but it boots quicker and seems to run better.
Don't bother about desire HD.
2.3.2 for me has random reboot and camera video/audio out of sync. So I will not go back to 2.3.2 just for the root.

Hi - Yes - I flashed UK generic using flashtool, then fastboot flashed the rooted .img over the top - did it this way to ensure that I get the right kernel and baseband etc..
Thanks and keep up the good work and info flow

2.3.4?

I have just checked OTA update and found an update that has xloud (boosts music when played through speaker), stereo recording (shoot video with high quality stereo sound), digital home (dlna), and finaly landscape homescreen. is this the 2.3.4 update? because I am already on 2.3.3
No, that's the 4.0.A-something update from Sony Ericsson. Still 2.3.3.
oh, I didnt know that they did updates within the current version of firmwares, I thought it was a new revision number each time. Do you think I could safely install this is I have unlocked bootloader and blagus? custom 2.3.3 rom that comes with root?

No you'll brick your phone when you have an unlocked bootloader and doing any kind of official update with either SEUS, PC Companion or OTA. You need to reloock your bootloader according to blagus tutorial, wich you can find it in the dev section. I take you have a r800i if not it might be a different story, but then you can check the dev sectioon for info on the r800x.
Regards Dousan...
e: I'm not sure if you need to flash a stock rom before updating or you can do it straight after relocking the bootloader. You'll havd to read that relock thread and ask there if you don't find your answer.
yes r800i, thanks dousan. I think I shall leave this update, nothing special added and dont really want any hassle there may be. Think I will wait to see if ice cream sandwich comes out, unless some how the 2.3.4 update allows tv out through livedock which Im guessing isnt possible
ok the play has its own dock without hdmi out
Does any TELCEL user (mexican carrier) knows if the 2.3.3 with XLOUD is already available for Mexico? I like to try the new features available, but I haven't rooted/unlocked bootloader my phone because of warranty issues (sony ericsson already let me down once... never again).
Thanks
Just checked for update and Telcel hasn't released it yet.
I don't want to loose warranty either, maybe after atleast half a year if stuff out there is really good for me. They handle shipping and all the paper work for us so it's good to have it just in case.

[Q] SE ARC help.

Hey all, I’m pretty new to this, have been reading throughout this forum and others for weeks. I got a few things I would REALLY appreciate some help with.
I have a SE ARC lt15A running 2.3.3 with 3.0.1.a.0.145 firmware. (I’m in Canada, phone is with Rogers) I bought it locked and unlocked it as I used it for a recent trip to europe no problem there.
It seems very slow like when I press the button for my contacts it takes about 5 seconds to open, so this brings me to where I am now, I’d like to put cyanogenmod on it and get rid of all the pre-loaded stuff.
Do I need to update the firmware before I put on cyanogenmod?
If so I can’t seem to get FastBoot to recognize phone.
But I can get Wotanserver to recognize my phone, there are different firmwares but none from Canada, can I use another region firmware on my phone and have it still work on with my carrier?
I don’t know if this matters but I was trying to flash firmware earlier and phone stopped working, was able to restore it with SEUS, can that lock my phone again?
Could be that i missed a thread that answers my questions, if so would appreciated being pointed in right direction.
Thanks again

mate i have the same issue. the thing is that once we (you) bought the phone locked the bootloader is locked and it cant acces fastboot - even if u got the unlocking code and even if uwill flash debranded firmware. there is no way to do so now. all u can do is root it and get rid of some bloatware. - yes root it without unlocking the bootloader. check out android dev section and DOOM'S version for windows! perfect and easy.
thats the only thing u can do so far - the same as me. just wait.
thanks
What's doom's version for windows? Can you point me to it? Is it better/easier to use than Gingerbreak?
Also can i update the firmware with a different region without screwing up my phone/provider? Is it possible to get 2.3.4 on a branded phone or do i have to wait for SE to release it for my region?

Make a backup of your ROM with PC Companion or Update Service then flash the latest firmware and root.
You can flash any arc firmware onto any arc.
If you still want fastboot enabled then contact me
i did...thanks god u r here..
Thanks guys i'm installing Doomlord.
For anyone else like me who dont know much of what their doing, i flashed 2.3.4 US on my phone with wotan but then had to add apn for rogers to get 3G back.

[Q] where to get stock at&t R800at firmware

I am looking to return my xperia play and need to know where i can find the stock at&t R800at firmware that came with the phone originally. I have since purchasing it put the R800a firmware on it (Generic North American) and since i am within my 30 days i would like to return it but want to flash it back to stock so to prevent any lash back from an at&t rep.
If you have any info on this subject i would be very grateful. My at&t Xperia Play is running the generic N.A. 2.3.3 firmware which i have gingerbreaked but still have the bootloader locked.
Good luck! The R800AT users are the very minority in this place and no one seems interested or cares to make a ftf of the R800AT. Just look at a couple people requesting the ftf a week ago.
Well your wait is over. Here it is straight from SEUS. Working, tested on my own phone.

Ok fantastic it finally surfaces thank you!!!!!!!:-D

thanks - been looking for this for a while
I used this and for some reason either my phone didnt take the FW or it was wrong. The phone read that it was still R800a. It had nothing to do with AT&T FW??
I'll be trying it myself here soon.
Can that flash tool be used to flash a non-ATT firmware to an ATT phone without unlocking the bootloader? Or even a custom ROM for that matter?

AT&T Galaxy S III unlocked

Hello,
Sorry if this was asked before but i couldnt find it in the search as its coming up with numerous returns on something else.
Anyways, I bought an AT&T s3 rooted and i was able to put it back to stock with Android 4.0.4. After i put it back to stock i got it unlocked to use on T-Mobile.
My questions are,
how do i update the software to the latest version. do i update it with AT&T software or do i use the T-Mobile software version?
If I update it again will it get locked again?
Rooting is not really an option as it is for my daughters use
thank you in advance for any replies,
V

If you update i believe it will no longer be unlocked to use on T-Mobile. However you do need to use the AT&T ROMs for it to work on your phone.
so is it best to root the phone and update it that way.

You can try updating the phone using the phone's OTA updater. It may not work if you have root.
I don't recommend updating all the way to 4.3 as it will load a 4.3 bootloader which cannot be downgraded and Knox.
