[Q] USB Host functionality - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Hi there!
My question is, if it's possible to somehow implement USB host functionality on
Galaxy W, in order to use flash drives/mouse/keyboard etc. with an USB OTG cable.
I know it doesn't work out of the box, but since there's the UsbStorage directory in the root of the internal SD as in i9100, maybe there's a way to get it work, somehow port it from SGS2...
What do you think is it possible?

OTG I waanaa too

Which kernels support USB otg? Thanks
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I don't think its a kernel issue but I am having problems mounting usb thumb drive as well. I got my wireless keyboard and mouse to work on it but when I try and use the stickmount app but it just closes after trying to find it. I tried to manually mount it in terminal using mount /dev/usb /sdcard/usb. It don't do anything. Lol when I do -- mount -t vfat /dev/usb /sdcard/usb it say device block required I am not sure what I'm doing wrong

android 4.0.2 doesn't support it officially, you have to use stickmount app by chainfire to use it. i can't answer if .3 or up will and when have official support. but .3 might have it already.

sometimes i have to unplug from the female cable on my otg cable. don't unplug your otg from phone. just your flash drive and reinsert. i've just started using it and usually taking it and reinserting right away does the trick. now we just need to find out what we need to do get otg and charging the usb host, which is the nexus at the same time. i'd rather do it through usb, but being able to have an offical DESK DOCK OR CAR DOCK SAMSUNG AND GOOGLE HINT HINT AND ONE MORE HINT would be a nice consolation prize until we figure out how.
I have USB thumbdrive (4GB) working on GNex with ARHD 2.1.2 rom 4.0.2 kernel using StickMount (from the Market).
Very cool. Without StickMount I could see the drive is initialized (LED flashes) but could not find the drive.
Cheap ebay OTG Host cable.

Android 4.0.2 does not support auto mounting USB drives automatically, or does not support USB host mode ?
I'd like to use my GN as a remote control for a DSLR. I believe it is not a matter of mounting a flash drive (but who knows ?), and I can't get it to work on my stock Android 4.0.2. It may be the cable I bought which does not work, but I'd like to know if it's not my Android version which causes the problem before buying another cable ?

[Q] Is there a way to use external USB storage (OTG) for backups and restore in CWM?

To be clear: I'm not talking about activating USB mass-storage (slave) mode connected to a PC. I'm talking about connection a USB OTG adapter and USB-storage to the phone and storing or fetching data from that in CWM, like ZIPs or backups etc.
Iirc there was a build for the Asus transformer (TF101) which does this. Is there anything remotely similar for the Galaxy Nexus?
I'm running the latest touch-based builds and it only seems able to work with internal storage.
Yes, there is. The SGN can act as an USB host. As I just tried, when an USB-storage is connected to the SGN over OTG cable, then I can see /dev/sda and /dev/sda1 with "cat /proc/partitions" at the terminal.
But, have to do some work else to mount the device automatically when connected.
Note: It is very important to have an OTG cable with pin 4 connected to pin 5 at the mini-USB connector.
I do have all that. I'm talking specifically about using USB OTG while in CWM.
Any (Gnex) builds which allows that yet?
(Thanks for the answer though )
No, you have to make the backup on your phone and manually move them over

Will my tablet recognise my Sony Handycam? Can i upload videos to youtube from it?

Hey guys
So basically I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC19E camcorder, and was wondering if i plugged it into my galaxy tab using the samsung usb adapter thing, will it recognise it and allow me to take and transfer files to and from the tab?
As i want to upload some videos to youtube but it wont work on my computer?
So im basically asking if anybody has got mass storage access to devices they have plugged into the tab 10.1
Thanks in advance for any help
Adam
I have a Sony dcr-sr100. It mounts to my galaxy tab 10.1 on stock firmware.
I have found that " high" powered USB devices are rejected by this tab, which is annoying. But i have found that how you connect the devices matter also.
E.g. if the adaptor is plugged in then i use my USB drive to the adapter is does not work.
If my USB drive is plugged into the adapter then into the tab it usually works, if not pull out and try again right away.
If you can get a powered USB hub, this will help for connecting more devices. Generic keyboard & mice work fine ( if not " high" powered)
USB mass storage otg app in the market will help to mount more drives at once and enable access to NTFS formatted drives which are not supported on the stock firmware.

So would u recommend getting a Samsung USB adapter thingy and them trying from their?

This is the one I got.

I don't see much point paying more than this.
Also the " card reader" versions are designed to only mount one card at a time since that is how the stock device handles otg. But if you already have USB card reader your happy with, it can be used with USB mass storage OTG app from the market. ( Which also adds NTFS support).

Sprite cheers. I may just get a 3 pound one off Amazon, then see if it works

I got the corded version, as I thought it was more risky using the "Block" style one that might break the connector 30pin if it was knocked too hard.
There is rick of the corded version breaking on the cable, but it is a cheap replacement fix.

USB OTG Cable?

Firstly, is it worth getting a USB OTG cable? What can you use it for? Do you have one?
Second, which one should I get for the Galaxy Nexus? I've seen these two:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Con...=1365625468&sr=1-2&keywords=samsung+otg+cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Cable...qid=1365625284&sr=1-23&keywords=usb+otg+cable
Which is better? Is there any difference? Appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Python.
First you have to get the app called Stick Mount if you want to use usb flash drives. But the OTG cable can be used for a lot of things, keyboard, mice,
usb flash drives. I've seen a youtube video where the guy uses a hub and uses all 3.

It's also my understanding that you can also flash leaked ota's from stock recovery with an otg cable.

I was going to get the Nexus Media Importer. But, which cable should I get?
I have a generic usb OTG.
I have successfully used a mouse, usb flash drive, keyboard.
The only thing I couldn't use was my CDMA internet stick.
If that would have worked then it would have really been awesome!

I would say just go for the generic or regular OTG cable.

Thanks. So, the second product (second link in OP) would work?
Also, would this work with the Galaxy Nexus: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cablesson-MicroUSB-HDMI-Female-Adapter/dp/B007K8NNOA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Yes, have fun with it, I am also going to buy one to experiment with. I'm not sure about the Cablesson one. Regular OTG yes

Deff buy it... I have transfer files/movies from my phone to a SD card..... Since my PC doesn't recognize my phone.

How much can you do using USB OTG with an unrooted Galaxy Nexus? Most importantly, can you use a memory card reader to copy files from the memory card to the phone or use it to upload the files to Dropbox?
I'm asking on behalf of my sister. I don't have access to her phone so I can't simply try it out. I know USB OTG works great on my rooted Galaxy SIII but I've never had a Nexus device.

As of 4.2 there is native support for USB OTG on the Galaxy Nexus so you don't need any third party app. You can use it without root USB device is mounted as /usbdisk. Try X-plore from the Play Store which shows a separate drive for the USB device you have connected.

i heard that nandroid can be save to pendrive using OTG when using twrp..

I have tried on my unrooted Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2. with stock ROM, with an original Samsung OTG cable, but nothing happens.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

See if there's an option in settings>storage as Mount USB storage, if not there use an app such as stick mount or USB OTG helper. Even for using those apps the phone should recognize when a storage device is connected, the pen drive/card reader should light up.
If option is there and still not mounting then any of your devices may be improper check your OTG cable with other phones, your pen drive/card reader.
Clean the contacts of cable and your USB device. Best way to confirm working is to boot to recovery and connect, USB storage is always mounted in recovery mode.

Any decent file explorer should also be able to see mounted storage, especially given 4.2. You may have to browse to root and poke around until you find the appropriate /mnt folder, but set a bookmark (your explorer supports bookmarks, right?) and that should be all she wrote. StickMount is also great for me.
OTG has been really helpful for playing media off of the occasional flash drive, and while using a mouse isn't all too helpful, playing with a full keyboard can make for a surprisingly good experience.

[Q] OTG connection via Nexus 7?

Hi all,
I've done a search regarding this and cannot find any relevant posts. My Ouya micro usb port has physically broken and i'm trying to recover my ouya again. I can boot it to recovery screen via usb keyboard but have no way of physically connecting to it since my micro usb port is broken. Would there be any way of connecting a Nexus 7 via OTG cable to the other standard usb port? Or can anyone suggest another method of connecting?
Wireless is out, cannot flash from usb pen drive have I any options left?
Could you somehow do adb over a wired network?
