i have question. I had created nandroid back up. Soon. I will change the rom. If i dont like the rom. I will restore the backup. Is there any problem restoring you're back-up? Should the data of apps installed in sd card must be on sd card? Is my setting will stay the same? Is the arrangement of the home will be the same? .Thanks

thers no reason to worry..make sure that your back up is success..no need to worry..all the settings,apps..in what you back up it..it restore..sorry for my english..

Restoring your Nandroid backup brings your phone to the exact state your phone was when the backup was taken. So everything WILL be the same.

Oooh . Like time machine?

what about kernel, firmware and root?
after restoring nandroid backup will we get old firmware, kernel and unroot?

that's one of my questions too

how about i created a nandroid back up. and formatted my sd card. then i only move the nandroid backup. should the apps will work properly without their data on sd card?

Yes, you will get back to your old firmware and kernel and root.
And its exactly like the time machine. It'l take your phone back to the state it was when you made the backup. If it was rooted, it will be rooted; if it wasn't, it wont be rooted. -_-

And yes, the Nandroid backup includes your app data so even if you format your SD card, you'l get back your app data from the backup.

That's the answer that i want. THANK YOU!

Backing up contacts? Those should be with google good friend. If you're saving them to the phone instead of through Google, well, I don't know why you would do that.
Did you use Titanium Backup at all? That will probably help with apps and their corresponding data. And no, there is no way to get back to your old nandroid without a PC. You HAVE to use Odin to go back to EC05 and from there, after you one-click root, you should be able to restore your nandroid assuming you're still using the same version of CWM you made the backup with.

[Q] Will flashing a new ROM wipe my external micro sd card?

Hey guys, I was thinking about flashing a new ROM via CWM and I've been looking at alot of videos and tutorials online, and they all say, that when you install the new ROM you must "factory data reset" your phone from CWM. So my question is, what will that erase? Will it erase anything on my SD Card? And what programs should I use to backup my stuff, in case it does get deleted?

when you do a factory reset it will wipe internal storage not external(sd card). if you want to backup your apps etc. use either titanium backup or rom toolbox to do so.

once you back up your stuff. install titanium back or rom toolbox (whichever you used) from play store and select the restore option.

Titanium backup only does your apps and app data......I recommend Easy Backup cuz that will get your SMS, MMS, Contacts, Calender, call log and even your apps

For photos, i recommend using G-Photos Sync feature. for apps, titanium backup, for contacts (the best you can do is export them to a vcf file transfer it to your pc then import from vcf file)
(For music i contain all the sound files on the ext-sd since factory reset doesn't touch ext-sd).
But if you have lost any of your important files, your best chance of getting them back is using hiren's boot on your pc with the undeleter tools.

Restoring data after "soft" brick?

I attempted to flash the 15Toggles/CRT mod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774717) and now my phone stays on the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" boot screen. I tried flashing the "restore" zip also included in that thread and it doesn't do anything. Now I've flashed various mods and what not without any problems before so lately I've gotten into a regretful habit of not backing up. I've learned my lesson from hereon out so please no lecturing, I'm just looking for some help.
Even though my phone is now "soft" bricked, I still went into CWM and did a complete backup ((I assume at this point CWM is the only way to back anything up). Now my question is once I have wiped everything and flashed the stock recovery, will I be able to restore my previous data separately from whatever system files caused the "soft" brick in the first place? Or am I pretty much SOL? Also, does app data include photos, voice recordings, wallpaper, etc. Or only settings for certain apps you've downloaded before?
Please dont use the term "brick" so lightly.
You have a soft brick.
If you made no backup in titanium or a nandroid, start from scratch

If you made a backup now its most likely useless,as the system is corrupt. In theory you just backed up that corrupt system

Hopefully my edits are sufficient enough for your liking. However, it being a soft or hard brick is irrelevant to actual advice I was asking about. If you read it correctly, I made it clear that I made a backup in CWM (nandroid) after the soft brick and I was asking about restoring certain data.

You MAY be able to salvage.. I would try going into clockwork and wipe data cache dalvik.. flash the same ROM zip you were on before.. then advanced restore data from your cw backup you made.. see if it boots up..
My understanding is that it depends on what went wrong on your flash.. if it was the system or data partition that got corrupted.
If that doesn't work you'll have to wipe all three again.. flash the ROM zip and start over setting your stuff up. Go into the market on your now cleanly flashed phone and go into my apps. Then start downloading your stuff.
Presuming you are rooted, I would recommend grabbing titanium backup and running the batch 'backup all user apps' on a regular basis.. that way if this happens again you won't loose your app data.
And of course.. make a nandroid next time prior to flashing.. if you are on the lazier side.. use ROM manager as you can tell it to do a backup then flash and reboot with 'one-click'
Good luck

Thank you very much for the thorough and helpful reply. I actually am rooted using the stock ROM. The zip I flashed was for the original out-of-box ROM, something like "L710VPALEN." And from there I flashed the updates for the phone to bring it to the current LG8 firmware version. Would your method just require me to flash the "L710VPALEN" zip again, update it to LG8, and then attempt the advanced restore using CWM? Thanks again.
Yeah that's what I would try first.. flash the same zips you used to bring yourself to stock lg8..

From wat i am gathering, u nandroided after the soft brick... u can try an advanced restore and pick just the data partiton. Are u restoring data to the exact same rom u backed it up from? If u r then the restored data should play nice with the system... however its not gauranteed... As far as wat data includes... it should basically put ur app back to the way it was when u last had it open on ur phone. this is how titanium does it nd i presume nadroid is the same but someone correct me otherwise. Worst case it doesn't work u have to just re-install all ur apps from scratch. Personally i use titanium to do my backups. Set it to auto back up apps nd data nd ur good. Hopefully this helps.

I did what DrKaotica suggested, re-flashed the stock ROM then updated it to LG8, re-rooted, and then used advanced restore in CWM and chose "data restore." I'm going to TB to do what you said and set it for auto back ups. Thanks for helping out kind sir.
Nice I'm glad that worked.
Make a titanium backup widget for the action 'backup all user apps'.. and touch it from time to time:thumbup:
I don't know that you can schedule automatic app back ups with tb unless you get the pro version so this widget is an easy way to do it frequently with minimal effort

Nandroid Backup

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues with Nandroid backup and restore.
After flashing ARHD 17.1 from 17.0 without wiping, everytime I make a backup it says that there was an error backing up /system and when I you try to restore it, it says MD5 mismatch.
The latest backup that I was able to use was using the backup before I flashed 17.1.
Is there any way I could fix this without wiping? I'm on a vacation right now and don't have a computer handy.
Hope you can help me out! Thanks and advance happy new year!

Its always advisable to wipe data and cache b4 flashing the old backup or a new rom...its always good and prevents many issues...!!
U need a computer to solve the md5 sum mismatch error....after that if your backup is genuine (without problems) then it ll surely work..just some commands to execute...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
Scroll through the first post and you will find the proper commands..!!
Cheers..!!
Thanks! Will try that when I return home from vacation.
I just read from the ARHD forum that you can flash without wiping if coming from another version.
How about my apps and their data? I not really sure if everything's backed up. How can I make sure?

You can backup the apps and their data by using titanium backup from the playstore..! i guess thats your best bet as you dont have computer handy...!! make backup by titanium backup and then upload the backup to some good cloud sharing sites and when your problem gets solved you can restore that backup..!!

Hmm, if you rename the backup with spaces, you'll get an md5 mismatch during restore, but no idea why you get one during backup.

Ok. good to hear. However I would not recommend restoring nandroids through any app. You should always do your backups/restore through your actual recovery. As far as your FC issues go, it sounds like you restored some incompatible app and/or system data through TB.. You need to be careful restoring specific data through TB when jumping between TW and AOSP ROMs.
Try clearing your cache and/or data through settings for any app giving you issues before attempting anything else.

Thanks for the advice.
I wasnt able to restore from recovery that is why i had to resort to rom manager.
The main problem i seem to have now is not being able to connect to my computer via MTP....
Any suggestions on how to fix this? everything else seems to be working (apps, email, messaging) accordingly except usb.
Also i noticed that a folder called "0" has been created on my phone and it is a exact copy of all my folders. Can this be deleted?

It happen to me sometimes when I connect phone to PC it said hardware id missing. What I did is change to other USB port on PC sometimes it help bit sometimes not so I restart PC and reboot the phone. After start up I plug the USB most of the time it solve my problem.
When you use CWM to back restore back, make sure that CWM is the one you use to backup prior flashing custom rom. It happen as well to me after update to the latest CWM I can't restore it said file not found. When I odin back CWM to the one I used when I backup my nandroid, it works.

You might wanna try different usb cables (prefer blackberry), different usb ports, and/or reinstalling the drivers. If none of this helps try the same troubleshooting steps on a different pc. That will tell you if it is indeed the phone or your pc.
A "0" folder was created as a second sd partition because you had flashed an AOSP ROM. That is your internal sd card so if you're on AOSP you don't wanna delete that folder. If you're on TW, which I can assume you already are, you can delete "0" but only AFTER you've transferred all your important content from the "0" folder back into their originating folders, or wherever you want them to be, on the root of your internal sd card. Otherwise, you will lose all your content.
