I'm new to Verizon..and 4g..so I'm trying to decide whether i have a defective phone. It constantly drops the 4g signal...about 3 or 4 times an hour at least...where there should be a good 4g signal....when i drive with the phone it drops signal alot..is this a defective phone or just the way gnex and 4g is?

You could try to a replacement, but it's the gnex. Mine acts the same way.

Thanks....hopefully they will come up with a.fix for this soon...its really annoying at times...I've tried all the diff radios.including 4.04 and nothing really better

I think it depends on where you are at. Certain parts of town I always have 4g. I think the gnex and Samsung in general dont get as good 4g reception as HTC or Moto. My old Rezound got 4g everywhere, even indoors some places where my gnex has never picked up 4g. So not sure if you have a defective phone or not.

If you're driving and losing connection that's normal cause you know....you're moving and your connection is bound to weaken and certain areas of you town/city may not be covered....but if you're stationary....that's different...that's a defect.

I've got the Nexus on Verizon and I am getting terrible cell reception. From where I am my other family members iPhone 4 is getting 3 bars while mine is either 1-2 bars or struggling to find a signal. To me this is a huge dealbreaker and I wanted to know if this is an unfixable hardware issue or a software issue that will be fixed in a later update because if it is hardware then I might use my exchange to get the HTC Rezound. Any help would be great, thanks!

Good luck with this thread. The fan boys will dominate you soon saying there are no problems. I have a thread on here highlighting the issues "sgn bad reception" and its clear as day there is an issue. But everyone will defend it.
However the adr mod with the xxkk6 radio seems to be a bit better for me anyways.

Well being a fan boy dosent help anything because there is definetly something wrong here. Standing in the same spot as me, the iPhone is getting several bars while mine cannot even find a signal.

Mine has terrible signal. My 4g is useless. It seems even on 3g my battery is eaten by my phone looking for solid signal.I can't listen to Pandora on 3g without buffering. I had a rent a razor. It had amazing 4g Always. Tier 2 cs offered to send me a new gnex. I didn't take it. I don't think it will fix anything. Thinking about trading back for a Razr. I

I have fantastic 4G signal almost everywhere in Atlanta GA. Had a bit of a glitch inside a large high rise building though on the 19th. no 4G at all there and it seems hand-off to 3g isn't that great. Been solid since though.
Nevermind. I'm just cranky.

It usually does it but it depends how long it been hot. How long have you have the phone for ?

I'm having a heating issue too(combined with poor battery life). Is it a problem with only the Sprint version, or have Verizon Galaxy Nexus users been having the same problems?

Both my Verizon Nexus and my girlfriends GSM Nexus both get very hot in the area, the CPU / GPU seems to run pretty warm on this phone.
For those with Sprint Gnex heating up, try going into settings and under Wireless and Networks click more> mobile networks and switch it from CDMA to LTE / CDMA. I know it sound ridiculous since there is no LTE and you would imagine it has reverse affect but many are reporting that this helped with the unit and heating up issues.

What kernel are you guys running? I have found running certain kernels have caused some heating issues. Try Franco kernel r160. This is the coolest my phone has ever ran.
I haven't met this kind of case.

In perfect conditions, I see at best -75dBm. My friends with the same carrier but other phones can see as low as -50dBm or lower.
Why is it like this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Because the radio on your phone is bad. -75 isn't even that bad. I get -100 in my apartment and don't drop calls at all.

Try to flash other radios. Namely 4.0.4 ones. If that doesn't help then it's hardware.

Yeah I'm not sure why you're complaining about -70.. sure it isn't as good as -60 but it's a hell of a lot better than -107 and I've never dropped a call.

With -70DBM? That's strange. My HTC One X would drop service at my house, but not the Nexus. I had the One X on T-Mobile though so it was EDGE only which is probably why.

No, not -70. That's when I'm outside and far away from my dead-zone area. While in the dead-zone area I have around -95 to -111dBm.

Picocell?
I've told them before that we have this issue in this area and I keep telling them it cannot be a dead-zone since it was no dead-zone half a year ago. Then it was beautiful and everyone who had Telia had amazing reception. Now, everyone have a ****ty reception in just this area. Technically, it's in the entire suburb.
OK so I traded in 3 nexus allready and cannot get a nexus that doesn't drop data ! I allready flashed different radios still nothing . I heard this is common with the nexus and that Verizon nexuses drops and there trying to fix it is that true ? And if not how can I fix this problem ! Its really starting to irritate me .

You need to request a new phone, not a replacement. Luckily mine was fixed after the first replacement, but I believe there is a policy that after 3 phones, they give you either an equivalent phone, or a brand new one, factory sealed. It's 100% hardware related, so unfortunately no software will fix it.

Force 4g to stay on, you can do so by entering this in your phone dialer *#*#4636#*#*
Go into phone information, scroll down, and select the network speed you want.

which 4g?
LTE or Wimax?
If wimax, a simple adjustment to NAPID extensions or a reset of the dsa value may do ths trick.
Alright so I have one of those dreaded releases where the signal is constantly dropping, 4g is absolutely terrible, and the signal NEVER goes above 2 bars. I live in a well covered area and should be getting full 4g all the time.
I bought the phone off Craigslist so when I first noticed the problem I went to Verizon. They told me that they couldn't help me because the phone was purchased off contract. So then I went to Samsung. They agreed to repair my phone, and after 2 weeks of not having it I finally got it back. Samsung did not fix it because it is still having the exact same problems.
So...as anybody tracked down the cause of this issue? Is it the antenna? Can I buy a new antenna and just replace it myself?
This is rather frustrating
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Is it possible that it just gets a weaker signal than your old phone?
I don't think so seeing as the service just drops out completely sometimes. Plus I've read quite a bit about other nexus owners having the exact same problem

Ah, okay, I thought it was more of a weak signal issue. Sorry about that. I would call Samsung again and request a replacement device, if at all possible.
Did you read that thread about how the Gnex calculates its signal strength? I can't remember where it is, but try searching for it. It explains how the Gnex uses a different method to calculate the amount of bars it shows, so it can show less bars for any given signal strength than another phone that uses the older method.
Following on from that, perhaps there is some mod you could make to the OS to change how it calculates the number of bars. All the files where the instructions are stored are mentioned in the post I saw. Sorry I can't remember where it is, I found a post in this forum with a link to an article on the net...

Yeah, I don't know much about it, just thought maybe might be useful.
But it just occurs to me reading the post again;
Has he tried changing his baseband? CHeck in the general forum, there's a list of all basebands with downloads
Is it running the stock rom and unrooted? When you bought it did the guy modify it in any way?
When I bought it it was on custom rom with a custom kernel and I think even a different radio. Before I sent it back to Samsung I returned it to complete stock ics which is what I'm on now
So currently unrooted with stock ics

Im not sure if I am having the same issue or not, but I live in Dallas and have plenty of coverage. Any other ATT phone I have had has never had an issue with signal. My phone shows full bars but I keep dropping data. I have to turn airplane mode on and then back off and it will fix it and I can use data again. Anybody know the fix for this? Flash a different radio maybe? I am using AOKP JB v1.
I still want to know if people think it is a problem with the antenna. Because I would say I can easily replace the antenna myself
