Does changing the kernel help with slow data speeds? What do I need to change because my internet feels like it's going at 56k speeds. I'm not over my AT&T data limit either so I know that's not it.
data speeds are determined by your SIM and your coverage. it has nothing to do with kernel.
go to att and get a new SIM and see if that helps out.

I don't know about that.
I heard that basebands or modems can be flashed to help with slow speeds.
I was running XXKK1 baseband on at&t in Austin TX and it was about 1.5mbps down. Then 4.0.2 came out with XXKK6 and it was same. Then I went to at&t store and had them provisioned my account with an LTE phone (HTC Vivid) so my data plan became LTE, then I added PTA APN settings in my GN and speed consistently hovers around 6-7.5 mbps.

Whoa, that's pretty cool.
So I just go into AT&T and tell them to put an LTE plan on my phone? I have unlimited so will it work?
Also, what does PTA mean?
Yes go to AT&T store and most reps will refuse to do it. Tell them to use an LTE phone, such as Vivid or Skyrocket and change the last few digits of the IMEI number and it will work. Your plan should show LTE in the data package.
PTA is the APN setting for LTE on AT&T. Search the General forum for PTA and you will see the settings for it.

Hope these work for you ATnT peoples. I tried many different APN settings. The Media Net is passive for MMS capabilities. My Active APN is the hspa one.
Also I was previously on the LTE unlimited data with Visual Voice mail and it was causing data issues it seemed so I called and switch back to the HSPA unlimited data.
Note: if you leave the LTE plan, ATnT will have to reset your mailbox since VVM is not support on the HSPA plan.
What speeds did you get out of those? And what area of the US are you in?
phone apn is already known to be one of the better apns
wap.cingular apn is also good
These apn's have been around for a while, since like the original galaxy S and maybe even older.
But anyway, I used only phone so far and my best at my house so far has been 5 down and 1.7 up.
Going to try wap.cingular apn as it gave me good speeds when I have a Galaxy Nexus

Well I am not in an excellent coverage area so, I get about 2mbps, that's better than Edge at least.
Also I found another thread specific to the "best" settings and trying out these setting also. Yeah I know wap.cingular I think is the old 2G/3G default. and phone was meant specifically for HSPA whereas pta is for LTE.
My problem was I was getting different results based on what was in the APN type field. Could have just been coincidences.

I have a unlocked t mobile galaxy s3 I'm using on at&t network and I only get 3g but my download speeds are 4 to 5 mb. Which is pretty decent but I was wondering if there was a way to get AT&T 4g? Maybe it's my apn setting issue? Any tips.....
What data plan are you on (medianet/dumb phone, fauxG, LTE)? I've rarely had issues with my unlocked phones having the wrong APN on AT&T, but here are the APNs: medianet is wap.cingular, 4G/HSPA+ is phone, and 4G LTE is pta.
That's about what I get on medianet. I've got as high as 8Mbps on pta but it varies and it's never been consistent for me. 3-5Mbps is normal for my HSPA+ in my area (Olympia, WA). I get about the same speeds in southern CA and tended to get better speeds by 1-2Mbps in Austin, TX.
If you're asking if it's possible to get LTE on the T999, I have no idea. ;P The MSM8960 (S4 SoC in both phones) does support it natively but I don't know if it's possible to enable the LTE modem in software. You could try flashing an AT&T modem but I doubt it's that simple.
Ok maybe I'm wrong but isn't the t-mobile galaxy s3 the only one that didn't come lte equipped because t-mobile uses hspa+?

Hey I have a question regarding this topic and the quote above. You listed the Apn's with its respective data plan:
1. wap.cingular = non-smartphone (i'll refrain myself from calling it a dumb phone plan lol).
2. Phone = 4G/H+
3. LTE = PTA
So I've just switched over from IPhone 4s > HTC One X > to now the Samsung Galaxy S3 (International unlocked version).
When I switched sims from iphone to one x, my data wouldnt work so they told me to get an LTE sim and give them the imei # of the ONE x. So i did that and everything was fine. They updated my account and i was receiving LTE on the phone with no issues.
NOW, with my galaxy, i just stuck the LTE sim in the phone and the phone defaulted to the cingular 410 apn. This is same as wap.cingular.
So here are my questions:
1. Would it be beneficial (from a performance/data speed standpoint) for me to call AT&T and tell them I'm back to a NON-LTE phone and have them change my account to a non-LTE account? And go through the process of changing my imei # in their system again also?
2. Since I'm actually on a smartphone unlimited (i did not take advantage of the $10/mo medianet) should I change my APN settings to "PHONE" and not use what the S3 defaulted me to?
3. Whats the actual difference in using wap vs phone APN's... I know the settings themselves are different, but anybody know the technical differences?
Thanks so much in advance!
T-mobile galaxy S3 on ATT 4G network
Hello can anyone post pics of the Galaxy S3 (T999) the t mobile version on ATT 3g or 4g networks. I am thinking about buying it but wanna be sure that it works before i spend the big bucks
This guy confirmed it works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27984139&postcount=28
Anyone else have such luck?
I'm having this exact problem. I have an unlocked T Mobile S3 that I want to use on the AT&T network. Phone, text and VM work fine although AT&T hasn't figured out how to give me data service in any form. They're all stumped by this.
What I really need help with is coaching AT&T through the process.
First, let me say that I may have set this up wrong, so any advice is appreciated.
I purchase the ST GS2 (I777) att model (running 2.3.6 on UDLG1 build) which comes with a ST sim before I discovered the T989 for cheaper. Got the T989 and unlocked it using info here. Took the ST sim from the I777, put it in the T989 and configured APN using the same APN info from the I777 (wap.tracfone - different than APN for ST BYOD sim).
The swap and I777 APN settings worked for calls, text, mms and data at first I thought. But I noticed that data is slow and intermittent. The T989 shows the 3g icon but when I run speedtest I get either a network 7kps down/999kps up or network connection issues. If I take the sim out and put back in the I777, I get 5-6Mps down and 1.0-1.5Mps up and the H+ icon.
The T989 is on 4.0.4 running stock build IMM76D.UVLH1 and the radio is T989UVLE1 (for unlock). So I flashed different radios but not any real difference. I also tried the LI and LH radios and the one for the Galaxy Note posted in radio sticky without different results.
I also tried the ST BOYD apn settings att.mvno and I get calls but no data. No help from ST customer service as they only support buying the separate sim card. I don't have one or else I would have tried it. Just wanted to try phone out before getting sim card. I wouldn't want this same data issue if I bought the ST sim separately.
And ATT works better in my area for coverage than TM before anyone suggests getting the TM sim.
Any advice? Thanks in advance.
Just to make sure it was not just that one T989 phone I have. I tried it on another T989 today and same exact issue. I beleive the T989 has the radio for HSPA+ on ATT. Perhaps that band of not enabled in the rom. Could it be a sim card issue - not sure how that effects it?
OK. I think I answered by own questions by reading HoFo thread #1781748 (can't post link). There the OP posted that they deleted the proxy and then got faster speeds. Worked for me too. Now getting 5mbps down and 1 mbps up.
The phone icon says 3g, but I assume that is because it is a TM phone and the icons related to the band that TM uses for 4g, not Att.
I suppose I can live with the icon saying 3g but with H+ speeds. Not trying to start an argument over the fact that H+ is nto 4g or really just turbo 3g. Just glad I got my speeds up.
Had similar issue with my T989 .. Thanks a ton
I have a att note 2 with a go phone sim card in it. I get hsdpa+ but can not get lte. When the sim card was bought it was used in a vzw note 2 would that effect it cause the vzw note 2 imei number was used to activate the sim. All the ready I have done someone said somewhere that the sim is probably not provisioned for lte. Well the point im getting at is I need help in trying to get lte and I know where im at there is lte cause my Co workers are currently on lte.

H+ is LTE. Check the phone status >> mobile network type and you will see you are connected to fastest available network.

If you are on a go-phone plan I would be very careful using mobile data. My wife doesn't use her phone much so she has a go-phone plan. I experimented with it some and a couple of apps got updated via mobile and it ate her $$ up in a hurry -- something to the tune of $17 in just a couple of minutes.
Then again there are a couple of different go-phone plans so this might not be the case for yours.

Sorry but h+ is not lte. And according to documents on att.com and other varies websites you can connect to lte with this phone on go phone plans
It is LTE if the rom doesn't have an LTE icon.
And how do you know you are in an LTE area? I'm in a large California city, and I almost never see the LTE icon.
HSPA+ is considered "4G" by ATT, but it is not 4G LTE.
AT&T 4g icon... yaya
At&t stock roms will show 4g icon in the status bar for both HSPA+ and LTE. This is where the confusion starts yay AT&T.
To check to see if you are on LTE I would go to settings / about phone / Status and check the mobile network type. I think this will give you a better indication of the network you are on.
An information app similar to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gdip.android.network may also help.
If you are still not getting LTE with your at&t go phone I would start by checking your apn settings.
I have used a few of at&t mvno's I have had straight talk, at&t-go, and currently prefer(and use) AIO wireless (now re-branded to Cricket). All of at&t mvno's don't even require you to unlock your carrier you can use any at&t phone on their networks.
I hope this clears things up a bit.
I've checked apn settings they are what it should be and in the settings menu it reads hspa+. And where I live and work both have lte. Gettysburg pa is where I live and I work in baltimore,md and people I know all have lte. I called customer service and they could see I was in a lte area and only receiving hspa+. They have a trouble ticket in. I know the icon in the notification bar always shows 4g thats why Ilike to always go off setting/about. Thank you for your help

you need a new sim, you can get LTE with at&t prepaid but if you have an older sim,it wont work. i had a note 1 on postpaid and was only getting h+ until i went to the at&t store and got a newer sim.
some people will try to say there is no lte on at&t prepaid, there is.

I agree with getting a new sim. Go to a corporate/retail store not a dealer/franchise store, as the corporate will give you a new reprovisioned sim and the dealer will say it won't matter, or charge you.
I just saw the LTE icon for the first time, but I am far away from my home now.
Was briefly excited on the arrival of my US version from oppostyle, but after hours of T-mobile tech support, a factory reset, APN attempts, still no LTE or proper 3g even on my Find 7, even though I live in a strong 3g/4g area...only (HSPA) H and H+. Can anyone help?
Thank you

Hmm, those match my settings and I am getting LTE. Dumb question, but have you restarted? I noticed my phone can get kinda quirky when switching between APN's, or if the data gets turned off by another app for some dumb reason or another.
I have a feeling there is a little more tweaking to do to the modem from Oppo...

I was uunclear about H+, have just been looking up info....Was on Verizon, a GSM newbee here
However, I am seeing very slow speeds on HSPA+ and HSP...not even seeing much of a difference in speeds between the two on my device.
between them. Averaging 0.6 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps down, and 0.8 mbps to 1.3 Mbps up, even though T-mobile tech support claims I have excellent 4g coverage in my area. Is this most likely hardware?
Also, on my roadtrip yesterday to Medford, I was capping off at around 10 Mbps on LTE at the most, which seems a ,ittle slow for LTE.

Sometimes your coverage can be solid but the backhaul (connection between towers and the Internet) can be awful. AT&T's local reps even told me that the local LTE isn't going to be particularly good for a while until they upgrade the backhaul to the towers.
Your HSPA+ speeds seem low, but that's in comparison with my AT&T experiences. I might try doing a speedtest comparison of LTE between my Nexus 5 and my Find 7a if I can.
I was reading the pocketnow review and they had trouble getting the phone to work on AT&T and T-mobile in the US. Does this phone even support T-Mobile LTE bands? In most areas T-Mobile has their LTE on the AWS band.

Mine does get all of these (4G, H, H+, etc.) but the problem is most of the time it can't even get data connection.
GPRS Setting for LTE works for Me
I was having problems connecting to data, calls no problem (OPPO FIND 7 USA).
Anyway, the automatic APN settings weren't right for me,I had to manually set the APN Protocol setting to IPV4 (wasn't set, reading Not Set) & it finally connected to 4G LTE.
Here's the strange part:
The APN Name (On OPPO FIND 7,USA Model) is T-Mobile GPRS NOT T-Mobile LTE.
If I changed the name,it wouldn't connect to data at all.
From best I can tell via web search, GPRS is synonymous with 2G,however,I have 4G LTE when this APN Name is used.
I've seen others having a hard time connecting to the network & seems this bug arose in the latest update.
Anyway,my settings are identical to those in the pics in the OP EXCEPT the very 1st line, the APN Name.
Where I'm at right now is notorious for a weak signal due to building/equipment interference, however,I'm picking up an excellent signal (-90 to -80dBm / 53asu) on LTE:13
Have you tried to turn on LTE 4G by going in the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* phone information and set preferred network as LTE only ?

Yes.
As it is now,w/the APN Name as T-Mobile GPRS & in the hidden menu, changing the preferred network to LTE has no effect,it stays connected to LTE & everything below that which is available in my area.
I just left it as UNKNOWN.
I tried changing the APN Name to T-Mobile LTE & it immediately disconnects, regardless of any other changes in the hidden menus.
As the phone senses/sets-up Auto APN,the only apparent thing that is omitted is the APN Protocol setting, which by default on my phone & SIM Card registered Not Set.
Changing that value to IPV4 (from Not Set) is what made the difference.
Perhaps this quirk has something to do with 2G in my area having been replaced/upgraded to 4G & 4G LTE & the phone doesn't sense the difference/recognize the difference but in name only, but, accepts the 4G/LTE Connection.
Not knowing all things network/etc..,this seems like a possible explanation.
All I know is that I have an excellent connection & fast speeds w/browsing/etc.....
I don't care what the phone calls it,or sees it as,success is success.
I've seen stranger things than this........
I have since replaced my SIM CARD & had no problems connecting to T-MOBILE's 4G LTE,no modification of the APN was needed.
However, this is while flashed to CYANOGENMOD 11 nightlies, have no idea if the previous issues would pop-up if running the stock COLOR 1.2.4i O/S.
I have had issues with T-mobile LTE. Played around with all the settings. Deleted the APN and created a new one, etc. It works now, but I didn't do anything special, it started working randomly a day or 2 later
Strangely enough I'm having the same problem getting 3g with Virgin (EE/TMobile) in the UK
It can take a while for LTE to provision after setting up the APN. Set it and let it try for about an hour.
APN
The APN setting should have no effect on this.
You have 2 different fields when you type *#*#4636#*#*, gsm service and gprs service. If gsm service does not show "in service", you can use any APN in the world and it still won't work.
