This has been said many times... It's not possible because a custom kernel needs to be flashed, and that special partition is locked by the bootloader and cannot be written to when locked.
I c i cant unlock my plays bootloader as testpoints dont register so im stuck on stock 2.3.3 with minimal roms to use

Why don't you unlock your bootloader and install a real jelly bean rom

Thanks for the links, but the bootloader is locked, so is it possible to still install custom ROM leaving bootloader locked?
It is possible for some ROMs i think.

It is possible as long as your new rom doesn't require you to change the kernel, so you can't use ICS or JB roms. Some GB roms also require a different kernel, like MIUI. Gin2Jellybean is fine, but it also support other kernels.
There are instructions in the rom thread. It says you have to change the firmware, but I never did and my Play is still working fine. I'd just start at step 3.
I can't boot into recovery, can someone please help. It just boots up as normal, i tried pressing back key and volume down key.
Are you using xparts to install CWM? Try using a earlier version. Version 5 worked for me last i recall

You can unlock your bootloader using that rom. The rom doesn't really matter but if you want to make sure everything.is a 100% fine you should go.back to stock ftf but the phone will be off when unlocking so it doesn't really matter.

[Q] Just a few Arc questions

I just have a few questions I want to get out of the way.
I have an Arc that I rooted (confirmed by the SuperUser app/ RootCheckr) I flashed a vodafone ICS rom with Flashtool. I installed CWM with X-Parts and can boot into it just fine.
But when I type in the *#*#7347 Whatever number into the Keypad it says my bootloader can't be unlocked. Yet all the signs from the stuff I mentioned above point to a rooted android device.
So without the Bootloader being unlocked I can't install custom kernels...or any custom roms? Are there any Roms I can use? I am fine staying with ICS Just curious if I have some choice in Roms.
for a locked bootloader you can't flash a custom kernel but a custom rom but not all so better read or ask carefully before flash any rom

Try Xperia Ultimate HD by jadar
It is butter smooth and responsive ui and have a fairly good battery performance
It can be installed with locked bootloader!
I have a bootloader locked and using Xperia Ultimate HD 3.1 BETA
I suggest you to install ver2.0.3 or 3.0.2
Flashing kernel is very dangerous to your phone, consider carefully before unlocking bootloader
