Hey all, I have a quick question for you.
I am running cm6.1 on a Htc Evo, have a gingerbread theme, and have applied a density of 180. At this density, everything looks awesome - besides the status bar. Is it at all possible to adjust the density, change the size of the graphic, change some code to make the status bar and icon appear larger while still keeping the overall density setting?

u can... if u know how to decompile the framework and change sizes in the specific xml... its doable.
i never checked... but from what u saying the size is pre-set, at least i would think so cuz the status bar image is usually a png 9 image that gets stretched to the pre set size.
i dont have time to try and help u find it and/or much more... but decompliling the framework-res apk and looking at the xmls that have something to do with the status bar (they r named with "status_bar..." usually) should set u in the right direction atleast.
About that, I am not sure how to decompile an apk, although I feel comfortable searching for and adjusting the xml. Thanks for your help.

i've been making animations for the past 2 hours... so ill look real quick.. i'd bet the framework for u dont look much different when it comes to that... ill let u know where it is.
That would be amazing! Thanks again.

ok... 180 would mean smaller things on the screen right?
anyways... i thought of something u can try without decompiling the apk.
do this.
pull the framework-res out from your /system/framework folder...
keep a backup just in case also.
then... open the apk with 7 zip and extract the "status_bar.xml" from the /res/layout folder.
then take the file u just pulled out and put it inside the res/layout-hdpi/ folder and overwrite the existing one.
that will give u lower sizes/values and such...
now... im not sure if that would help or make it worse... but if u feel like trying it.. knock yourself out... just keep a backup of the original framework so that u can revert.
btw... if it will work... than u would want to basically do the same with the layout-land and layout-land-hdpi folders to take care of landscape also.
there are more file that i might need to move around and such... but if that will work for u... i might be on the right track to helping u do it without decompiling anything.
keep in mind that i never tried it... and i also dont know how the whole changing the dpi even looks like.... so until i really see it and try for myself... im just guessing here.
edit:
oops... just saw u want them bigger...
my bad.
igonre what i just said.
anyways... look inside res/layout-hdpi folder of the decompiled apk.... any files that has to do with "status_bar....xml" u can edit icons sizes and text sizes in it.
i dont have your framework res file and i cant really change things up for u without having it... not to mention that i will need to try different sizes until it looks right.
for me it is set to 38 pixels... so u might wanna go bigger.
i also saw that it basically determine the sizes by the actual icon size... so im not 100% sure here about what to do exactly cuz im obviously not using the same thing as u, so i cant test it out right.
anyways... i would assume it shouldn't be hard to do if u play with some value a little bit.

the statusbar_background.png is the file you are looking for for your status bar and many files for your icons like(stat_sys_wifi_signal_1, stat_sys_wifi_signal_2, 3 , and 4 are all for your wifi signal. They are normal png files not .9.png files so they should not be streched. I dont know if changing the size would do anything for you but you can try. The Apk Manager 4.9 will help you with decompileing and recompileing you apks, here is the link you will find it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701 good luck and let us know if it works.
After a change has been made, is it as simple as copy and pasting on to my phone? I have a mac so I am unable to use the Apk Manager. Additionally, it appears every .xml file is in a code unknown to me, and is not editable by changing a figure as there are no numbers visible to change.
I must be doing something wrong or not seeing something. Whenever I edit a .xml file, it loads a bunch of gibberish, rather than code. Or maybe I just don't know what code looks like lol

I believe your problem with not being able to view/edit the xml's is because straight off the phone, they are binary xml files. If you want to edit them that way you will need a hex editor. Unfortunately, the only way that I know to decompile them is through APK manager. I realize you are on a mac so if you would like, I can decompile your apk and send it back to you.
Wondering which mms.apk listed just changes the icon in the top notification bar in froyo so it doesn't look like the email envelope. I like the bubble layout so just want a different icon or even color of the envelope.
Thanks.

I too dislike the envelope icon because it looks too similar to the e-mail icon. Going to see if I can swap the original icons from the 2.1 MMS.apk and post it here in a few minutes.
EDIT: Okay, so much for a few minutes lol. My n00b image editing skills made this take much longer than it should, but here's an Mms.apk that has the 2.2 bubble style, but has the 2.1 notification icons. I took the check mark from the 2.2 read report icons and imposed it on the 2.1 icon, so if you wonder where that icon it's from, it's because I ghetto rigged them together lol.
Installation: Unfortunately I don't know how to make flashable zips, so this has to be installed through adb or copied and pasted with Root Explorer or any other file manager with superuser permissions. However you install it, your goal is to copy the Mms.apk to /system/app/. I used adb to install it. I did it while my phone was in Clockworkmod recovery because it wouldn't let me write to /system/app/ while Android was running. I'm sure there's a way around that, but I'm not knowledgeable on that method and too lazy to find out lol. Be sure to backup your original Mms.apk and make sure you keep the proper casing - don't put mms.apk or MMS.APK, it has to be Mms.apk.Hope this works for you.
EDIT 2: added another version that uses the green messaging app icon for the notifications if you prefer that to the black notification icon. Be sure to rename it to "Mms.apk"
Just go get the MMS.apk from the gingerbread 1.8.5 theme. Swap that out instead of the one from the 2.1 rom.
Or do you just want to swap the icons not the whole MMS.apk? If so, then ya, go into the framework-res.apk and swap the icons.

OK, both work great for the icon replacement but turned the bubbles into greys instead of the original blue and yellow. Can you get them back to that?
Thanks

I do get that occasionally, I usually just resend or copy and paste the text. I'm not sure what the caused and/or solution might be, but I just work around it until it sends. Also, instead of rebooting , you coul try cycling in and out of airplane mode and see if that fixes it too.
Can someone make this flashable through CWM??? I have trouble with adb.

You are awesome! Everything works great. Went with the green icon, more visible.
I think I tried switching in and out of airplane mode but might not have waited long enough to see if it worked. Resending just hangs also. I did a huge wipefest this weekend when I tried a new ROM and lost too much of my customization and Sprint Nav, so put it back to stock ACS ROM. Maybe that will have fixed it. Will see today.
Thanks again. Maybe custom boot ani's will be my next project for this phone.

You have been so awesome I hate to ask, but my girlfriend wants to know if it is possible for you to do it in purple/light purple balloons with a purple icon. If it is a hassle don't do it...I am really happy with what you already did. Whenever I tried someone elses' I would lose the messaging icon from the bottom bar and have to reset TWlauncher data to get it back. Can't figure out how to drop an icon onto it. Trash can always shows up.

I'll have to look into it tomorrow, I'm not actually very good at image editing.
If you want to change the apps in the TouchWiz dock, try GTG's TouchWiz. The default TouchWiz that comes with the Epic doesn't let you change the icons in the dock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822523
I use the 5 icon dock version and it's awesome! You can arrange the icons anyway you want and it supports auto-rotation if you want.

Here is how I install them on TW Launcher:
!. Make a backup of TWlauncher with Titanium backup
2. Copy whichever one you want to use as Mms.apk (capital M is important) onto your SD card.
3. Use root explorer or ES File manager to copy Mms.apk from your sdcard to the app folder in the system directory on your phone overwriting the original (rename the old one and save it if you want)
4. You will notice messaging is missing from the bottom bar now. Use Titanium backup to restore TWlauncher and the icon will be back in whatever theme you have chosen.
All this assumes you are rooted and have some knowledge of working with files.
Hope this helps.
If you are using GTG launcher then you can skip all the backup and restoring and just drag the icon back to the bottom bar.
I guess the purple/light purple bubbles and purple icon was more work than I thought. Thanks for the others. You are awesome!
*wrong quote and nvm..
Hello you all
I would like to have some information about editing the default android lockscreen.
First of all, I know that it is much easer to work with a lockscreen replacer like widgetlocker. But I hate the fact there is a lag on it, you sometimes can unlock the default screen, open for example the app drawer when suddenly your phone get locket again, but this time with the slow responding widget locker.
And besides that, I like to mess around with that sort of things
What I did so far just deleting the htc sense lock screen (thanks to warriorvibhu http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948976). But when you do so, you notice that the sliders on your screen are way to big.
This can be solved by flashing an other framework, and I did that (using remove_HtcLockscreen.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10192875&postcount=2). The only problem is that this framework is, in my opinion, deadly ugly. So I thought "as I've seen that it is possible, I just going to modify the things my self".
I did all sort of things, using the new framework to see which things where changed. The plan was to look where the lockscreen was defined, to look for diferences and to make modifications in the standard sense framework.
The two most important things I already have done is
- modifying the keyguard_screen_tab_unlock.xml of the framework-res.apk so that it matched with the one in the framework-res.apk that I downloaded - resulted in nothing.
- deodexing the android.policy.jar classes.dex file. I've seen that there are a lot of smali files in there reguarding the "lockscreen" and "keyguard", but first of all I don't now which one does what an secondly, I've seen that the standard sense android.policy.jar doesn't contain a classes.dex file. I've already tried to push the android.policy.jar with the classes.dex file in my phone, but I noticed no difference.
Reading this it appears to me that it doesn't seem that I have done so much. But I can assure you, I've done a lot more, but most of the time it had nothing to do with the lockscreen and/or resulted in a bootloop.
But now my ideas have come to an end, and this is why I'm asking for help. Can somebody set me off in the good direction? I know that it must be possible to make the sliders normal, so it is really driving me crazy not to see which files I should edit.
Thank you in advance,
Erwin

I flashed this one when I was using Sense and the lockscreen looked OK, not too big, not too small, just like the default android.
Kinda like this, but better:

Thank you, but again, this is something that changes icons etc. And all I want to do is make the slide bars look like in that ROM
But reading trough that topic, it looks to me that it appears to be difficult to make changes in sense roms... Still hoping that someone can point me the files that should be edited, or at least set me of in the good direction.
But thank you Alex_GP for your fast respons!
Erwin
I don`t know these stuff, but you can try PM-img HewGBalls http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3193485 and asking him for directions, seeing that he`s the one that worked on this before.
I'm new to Android, coming from my FrankenPre2 after giving up hope on webOS and HP. Picking up the Epic Touch has been great, besides the LOS and battery issues. I was pretty deep into modding the Pre, so I'm looking to do the same here.
My first thought was to try to modify the images on the Epic, but I am lost as to where to find the correct files to modify. I was able to change the icon for the messaging app and the Incoming/Outgoing phone call animation, but that's pretty much it. I don't know where to start with the phone app, since images seem to be spread out all over the place. Opening up the phone apk yeilds a ton of images, and I don't know which ones to change.
My question would be to any themers out there, or anyone familiar enough with Android. How do I know which images I need to edit? Is there a directory or a file list which gives corresponding locations to specific images, such as the "1" button or the "Call" button, or the launcher icons? Or is it more a process of trial and error? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pretty much everything. My first shot will be at the stock icons on the launcher. The I'd like to start on themes for the phone, email, and messaging apps. Pecifically, on the phone I'd like to change much of the color scheme, since the stock colors are in my opinion pretty ugly. But I also want to change the dial pad numbers and other standard buttons.
I was directed to this thread by another Android user:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821638
Looking into it, the framework-res.apk does have a lot of images that are familiar, but there are a lot of images that aren't there. I think I'll have to start learning about the names of the file locations, and going by trial and error. It would be awesome if there was a simple blueprint as to where the images you want to change are, but ah well. I've got a lot of learning to do. Thanks for the response, and if you have any other suggestions, let me know.
Check out SystemUI.apk

Thank you! I would never have looked in the contacts for the dialer icons. There doesn't seem to be a perfect logic as to which apk's hold the images, so I guess it's going to be a lot of trial and error here. If you know of any more locations, let me know. Thanks!
you need to modify the images in the following that I know of to get a pretty standard theme
Framework-res
touchwiz framework-res
contacts.apk
systemui.apk
I have a theme request for the Galaxy Nexus... I've tried doing this myself, but with my novice level of expertise, I'm afraid it's hopeless...
I really detest the new "Evil Snowman" image that shows up for all contacts without a pic, caller ID, text messages and some icons. I have no idea why Google chose this image. The little robot was much nicer. Anyway, if anyone has the time, I would really appreciate a theme that keeps everything stock, but replaces all the horrible "Evil Snowman" images with something better - a little Android Robot would be great.
I'd be happy to donate to anyone that can do this.
Thanks so much...
if you look a little further back in this forum (or maybe it was in Rootzwiki, not sure which) there were a few themed apks and zips that I found I looked through them but never saw anything that interested me.
I looked too... The problem is that I really just want a stock look, and no snowman. I don't want to change everything else.

Honestly, I'm not that fussy... Perhaps a little Android man in a color scheme that goes with the stock look.
The problem is that the snowman is everywhere... Here's a list of places I've seen, there may be more...
- Phone App / Contacts
- Caller ID
- Conference Call
- Messaging
- People App Icon
- People App top of screen
- People App contacts
If you can do this for me, I would be delighted... I will also gladly donate if it works.
BTW, I'm running Stock 4.0.4 for the CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus (Rooted and De-odexed)
EDIT: I like the contact image shown here, but perhaps in colors that better fit the stock look:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467139
I agree with you Matt...although I never thought of the stock 'unknown' contact image as an Evil Snowman, lol.
Anyways, the files that you want to change are in framework-res.apk\res\drawable-xhdpi\ic_contact_pictureXXXX.png. Attached to this post below, you'll find a quick screengrab that I took from my theme's working project folder.
Speaking of which, I will be updating my PCB Blue theme to include the Android robot image (specifically 'ic_contact_picture_2.png') by default, as I also prefer it over the "Evil Snowman"
You should be able to just edit framework-res.apk with WinRAR since you're only replacing normal PNG files. Extract them first, rename them, then drop them back into the .APK...on the other hand, if you like my PCB Blue theme, you can always wait for the next version where that will be done.
** EDIT ** - I am attaching the 3 untouched PNGs from framework-res.apk to make things a bit easier for you. They have been renamed properly to have Android use the robot as default. You therefore shouldn't need to do anything else but pop them into your framework-res.apk (many guides exist on how to edit this file, but the quick version would be to use ADB in Recovery to make changes (pull --> edit --> push --> set permissions) to the file.
Also, it may be possible that the other apps/APKs have their own resource image for an unknown contact. If that's the case, you'll have to dive into those APKs too (I only mod framework-res.apk myself, didn't peek into any others).
Hope that helps.

Scar,
The snowman is definitely evil. I feel like he is mocking me with that sideways smile. I don't like it... Hahaha... Just kidding
From what I can tell, the contacts.apk, phone.apk and mms.apk all have their own "snowman" images so I think they would all have to be edited. I know that I can do this using 7-zip, but it's really a bit beyond my comfort level right now. I'm still learning
If I edit the framwork-res.apk, does it override the files in the individual apps? It sounds like it doesnt. BTW, your image with the droid at 45 degrees is fantastic. It is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Do you have a larger version for to replace the one that shows up with caller ID?
Thanks,
Matt.

LMAO! You know, the more I look @ him, the more I dislike him too...especially with that sideways smirk...
If you did check those other APKs and see snowman images, then yep, it's quite certain that those APKs will need to be modded. I use WinRAR and it couldn't be easier...one thing you must remember is to choose ZERO or STORE compression when working with 'framework-res.apk' and possibly others. They are not compressed in the ROMs (at least AOKP, which I run).
So, if you edit only framework-res.apk, then it probably will NOT change the caller ID, contacts photos, etc.. In terms of the image, I took that directly from 'framework-res.apk', so I unfortunately don't have a better/larger image. You might try Photoshop/GIMP, using an image resize method that is "better for enlargement".
Cheers Matt!
I'm still no further forward in my quest to kill the snowman. I like the robot image posted above, but the issue is that it's 108x108 pixels. I basically need 4 different images. One light grey as shown which is 128x128, this will work for the People App, MMS and the Framework. Then I need a darker one which is also 128x128 for the contacts list in the phone app. Next I need a dark image which is 360x360 (for caller ID screen) and another light image which is 360x360 for the People app (viewing a contact).
In summary:
128x128 light grey
128x128 dark grey
360x360 light grey
360x360 dark grey
I have tried to resize the image, but it looks like crap. Can someone please help me? I think I can get this done with the right png files.
Thanks,
Matt.
