Were looking at picking up an eReader. I was leaning towards the Kindle Fire vs Nook Color but now read about the Nook Tablet. From what I am understanding the KF is rootable now? And at this time what one would you pick and why? I do not want to buy only to regret the decision later?
Secondly when rooted does a Barnes and Noble app work on it also? And is their any problem with the cloud?
When rooted does the Android Market work also?
What are some of the things I would want to consider when I compare them? Also from what I understand you lose storage space of the cloud when rooted so loose alot of storage is this true?

I would reccommend the kindle fire to start off... Yes the kindle fire is very rootable when useing kindle fire utility. The nook tablet and color have options for more space however if you choose not to flash a custom ROM on your kindle fire then you have unlimited amazon storage in the cloud. (Only for Amazon stuff) you also have 5 GB of cloud storage for anything you want. Expandable (for a couple bucks a year). You will not regret buying a KF. Yes B&N app works on rooted kindle fire. No problems with the cloud so far... the android market works when rooted yes.. If you don't mind having to be connected all of the time to wifi to be able to access your books/movies/mp3 files then is it great! No when you root a kindle fire you do not lose the cloud.... that only happens if you flash a custom ROM. However devs are working on USB hosting for the kindle fire so that means flashdrives.. hope this helps you.
I can't think of much else to add. I've had mine since launch and love it. If rooting and flashing custom ROMs are things that interest you then you should definitely go with the KF. The Nook Tablet is apparently lacking in development as I've checked there and am pretty sure they don't have a stable version of CM7 yet when the KF has several rock-solid CM7 ROMs and our devs are making great strides on CM9.
Problems with WiFi Connectiviy
There have been quit a few reports of Kindle Fires not being able to connect to a secure router using WPA/WPA2 - PSK (Personal). Encryption Type TKIP+AES.
They said it works with WEP, but that isn't secure enough.
I bought a Kindle Fire last week and have not been able to maintain a connection on a secure connection. I'm hoping someone in here might have some ideas. Other sites have no been helpful, and I'm hearing support for this is extremely lacking. Hope I posted in the correct place, Thanks.
I've had the nook color and the tablet and the fire. It really depends on what you want, if a ton of support and on board storage are things you want, and don't need the fastest thing ever, the color wins. Also cheaper then the other two. If you just want root but not custom roms and on board storage with more performance then a color, nook tablet. However at a little less you have the same or better performer with custom roms to pick from and don't mind losing onboard storage expansion, the fire wins.
As I said I have owned and hacked modded whatever all 3, for me its nook color or fire, forget the nook tablet for now. I sold my color to get the nook tablet, which I returned and got a fire. I've since moved on to an Acer iconia a100 and my mom uses the fire, rolling an ics rom and doing fine. I can't answer the wifi thing other then it connected to my wpa2 wifi fine for the 15 minutes before it got rooted and rommed. Still works with my wpa2, I've since changed from dlink to Linksys routers, never had an issue not due to a rom bug.

I haven't heard these reports. Anyway, I run stock, have been for months my home connection with wpa2 has not given me any problems with my kindle. Solid.
I got a fire in trade, played withit in stock form. It does its job. I'm accustomed to stock android and am running. CM9 build as of now. The lack of storage do sent bother me because anything no want to listen to is on iheartradio or on Pandora and movies, I can find them if I need them. Mostly tho, I browse the web and XDA looking for a different from for my toys... B-)

Hi from the specs and quality point Playbook has it all and the price is 199.99 for 16gb. Compairing to Kindle Fire which doesn't have a mic, front and rear camera Bluetooth and other lots of stuff missing, what is the point? Playbook has everything and better build quality and even volume keys. It already runs gingerbread 2.3.3 in android player.
Please don't start a war. Its just a question.

I'm going to hazard a guess that it was primarily because of the Android OS. Yeah, the Playbook has great specs and price point but it's sort of off in it's own little category with a much more limited amount of apps and media.

yes I understand, but the Playbook can be hacked too, its already running android in the player, it's just that if dev's made a recovery so we can flash roms it will be awsome.

It is a reasonable question.
I never really thought about it to be honest, but when I bought the Kindle Fire the Playbook was more money, as far as I knew, and it was not native Android,
Additionally, I like Amazon - I have been a "Prime" member for years. So for $199 out of the box I get an ereader, with the few kindle books I own and free kindle books; Free streaming video, the Amazon App store, which isn't the Android Market but isn't too bad.
Also, I could see how popular it was going to be thus resulting in a large developer community and lots of fun stuff to do with it.
2 words. Native android. You can reason that you can "run" Android on a Playbook but it's not running directly on the hardware which introduces a lag which isn't noticeable but psychologically bothering to most people who could and would run Android on it.

TBH I hadn't heard about the Playbook. And my reasons for getting a KF are more complex and irrelevant to this thread. I'm glad you like your device though... it sounds cool.
Price. All I want/need out of a 7" tablet is the Kindle app, a photo/comic viewer and a web browser. The Playbook wasn't that cheap when I got my Fire.
thanx everyone for shareing

samomamo, since you have this up and running on your Playbook, I have some questions-
1st, what about Amazon App store? Are you able to load and run any apps from there? I ask, because I have gotten a few apps from there that I'd love to run on the Playbook. Sketchbook Mobile and Gaia GPS, at the very least. Textplus Gold is another I'd absolutely use.
Other android apps I want to know about (and these are all free, which is one of the biggest draws to Android)-
Aldiko with ability to function fully (set up catalogs and download books directly to device
WiFi Analyzer
Angry Birds (yes I know, but it IS fun)
Words With Friends (again, I know)
Google Cloud Printer
Dropbox
Pandora
Tunein
Medscape, Epocrates, or Merck Medicus Mobile (one of these, at least, if not all)
I got a playbook, and yes, the hardware and specs are very impressive- much moreso than my Nook Color. But the Nook has all these running and thus has the edge.
Merry xmas!
These apps
Hi the thing is that it was running half baked not all the apps. I can install anything from android market but not from other places. So I gave up and sold it and picked up an Kindle myself. It comes out that if it doesn't have support form the devs then its crap. Don't matter what specs it has.
I have the kindle rooted and with adw ex and its perfect. The only thing bothers me is the lack of micro SD card. That's all.
Playbook has very nice hardware but no support so until it gets support its just a blackberry. That's all.
So I answered my own question
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Simple, BBOS is dead.
From the wikipedia:
"Due to low demand for the Playbook, RIM took a $485 million write-off to account for offering price discounts."
You can't flash custom roms on a Playbook. That's why.
Playbook
I almost bought a blackberry playbook several times. Was pretty tempted when the 64gb version went on super sale. In the end, the problem was the app store. There simply are too many missing apps for the playbook compared to both the iPad/iPod, and android market...and the android player has some significant limitations. Add to that the delay of the new Playbook OS 2 that was supposed to be out by devcon and was delayed till (at least) February and that was the nail in the coffin.
The issue with that device has never been the (superb) hardware, it's been RIM and the software side...
...and honestly, I'd be surprised if this time next year the Playbook is still being manufactured. Amazon has probably sold more Kindle Fires in December alone than the Playbook has sold since inception (that's just a guess, but I'd put money on it).

I read something about it. It's because BB doesn't allow you to write in the boot sector, right? I always hope that someone will find a workaround.
I was recently gifted a playbook, thanks to developers' program. I personally think that both playbook/kindle simply lack of Android
Having it like a natively installed it is way better than having it emulated on Android Play. This is why I haven't even turned up yet. Sell or keep? This is the question!
ps:
sorry for having unburied an old thread, I didn't noticed the date :/
Well, it may have better specs, but you cant beat Amazon's services. And Blackberry OS doesn't cut it for me. I HATE Blackberry OS and I hate the brand itself. I have had and used many of blackberry devices and I cant stand them
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
Since thread is resurrected i will put my thoughts also.
1) Native Android
2) QNX still is a minority OS in market.
3) android inside the emulator is still a lot more to go.
4) COST
5) LOTS and LOTS of DEVS
6) AMAZON books and prime
I waited before getting any tablet. I ended up choosing the Kindle Fire for a few reasons.
1. Amazon (use it entirely too much)
2. Reading at night (reason I went with KF and not basic kindle)
3. Not too large or expensive (iPad is just too much and Galaxy as well)
4. I knew I was flexible in being able to root it and do what I want
Reasons I went with KF over Playbook...
1. Since I got my KF recently I was fortunate enough to know Blackberry is a dying breed
2. Root capabilities/flexibility
3. Amazon friendly (seriously I use this too much)
Those are my reasons.
I saw the new Kindle Fire SD announced with slightly better specs available for $159. I wanted to buy it and also sign up for Prime to stream video and borrow books and have apps and stuff, plus root it and run Android 4.1 so I can have an awesome cheap "android tablet" with Amazon Prime
Is it worth the $280?
Will there be development?
Thanks in advance for aiding a little noob.

Buy it because you want to use it as an Amazon tablet. Whether or not these can ever be used as an Android tablet is the big question mark right now. There are rumors and much speculation about whether or not the bootloader will be secured in some way. The way that Amazon is marketing these things with lockscreen advertising, they have plenty of reasons to keep them from being easily manipulated like the first generation devices. Nobody will have any good idea about their potential until the right people start looking at them.
I have no idea where this $280 figure comes into play.
EDIT: I'm not sure the SD version is a good buy anyway. For $40 more, you get the better display, double the storage, bluetooth, HDMI out... that seems like the better choice.

$40 doesn't seem like much at all, and your views on the SD tablet are very interesting. I honestly haven't even considered the HD version. I'll check it out.
Thanks for the input.
It's still a question mark on whether the developers will be able to root the new fire easily. I suggest waiting for a month or so.

The new Kindles have a locked bootloader, but I have a feeling they'll be easily bypassed since Amazon lets you do manual updates via USB.
Ok you're asking us about 2 separate things. In my opinion, Amazon Prime is only worth $80 if you buy a lot of stuff online.
If I were in your shoes, I'd buy a used Kindle Fire or I'd find a way to get $40 together and buy a Nexus 7.
Hello, I don't know a lot about this as I've never unlocked a device before, but I am reasonably savvy on the PC if given pointers.
I tend to just use the PC (w7-64) when I have time, or my Galaxy S3 when I am about. Recently we bought my daughter a Kindle Fire HDX. Under device model it lists itself as a 3rd Generation.
We however cannot get it to do many of the things we'd like it to do because it cannot use the android store. It's extremely frustrating for her and us. It appears that is because Amazon does not permit it to, even though I unlocked "Apps from Unknown Sources" we are still running into all kinds of blocks.
We dont use the Amazon FreePlay, though it would be nice if that could work if this device ran as a native Android device just in case, but can live without it if not.
I have read Kindle Fire for Beginners ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547) but the thread is from 2012 and Im not sure how things have changed from the generations of Kindle Fires.
So....
Where do I start?
I need a set of pages (or threads) with walkthroughs for a 3rd gen. Browsing through the site here, I saw a thread for 1st gen devices, and a lot of threads about unbricking from ROMS, Im not sure I fully need a ROM and probably just root permissions, on the other hand a ROM may be nice. One thing I dont have is a lot of time, and if it's too difficult I can sell the Kindle and buy a Samsung tablet at Costco or something. I just hate to waste money though.
Thanks for your time and help!
You need to go to the kindle fire hdx forums.
I am hoping someone can help me make sense of why Fire TV or Android TV do not have options to allow external storage without a mod?? They want you to purchase games then give you no room to install more than a few at a time? The cloud is great but to me it is a waste of bandwidth to download multiple times? Heck install Bards Tale once on Fire and you are about full?
Maybe it's me I must be slow for I fail to see the Logic?

It's a very controlled ecosystem. The hardware is almost too good for what Amazon wants to offer. If I couldn't root it I wouldn't be buying another one. But at the very least they could've offered an upgrade like with phones and tablet. Maybe we'll see 16gb hdd on the 2nd gen but the way they've been so vigilant around rooted devices, I probably won't buy.
I was surprised when I picked up a ouya for my son it only had 5 gb and change available to start. But at least there you have ext storage and can feel secure in rooting and modifying.
I am a very early adopter of the Fire TV. One issue with set top boxes that really sticks in MY CRAW is how they can market a device for gaming then provide no storage to keep them? At its release this was suppose to be added to Fire TV and unless I'm missing something still no support?
Fire TV is not alone Android TV devices , Madcatz Mojo, have slots for expansion then provide a OS that does not support it? I just can't see the Logic!!!! You ask me to buy games? Where am I suppose to put them do a uninstall daily or weekly? You should not have to modify the device?
Am I the only one who is missing something here? Can anyone explain the thought process behind this? There has to be a reason I JUST DONT SEE IT?
My fire TV sits in the closet

I didn't buy 2 of these boxes for gaming. But, yes I think you have a VERY legitimate gripe. The only reason I bring it up is the other nite I was watching the news and saw people were suing Apple over the new iPhone.
I didn't follow-up on it & 'really only just thought about it when I read your post, but they're basically mad because Apple promises x amount of storage without making it clear that the OS takes up a significant amount. I don't have a iPhone but I'll bet the provider has some immovable bloatware as well. THEN their only solution for you is to upgrade for a substantial fee or pay for cloud storage.
I've pointed out it seems like a crime to have such little space to start then take another 30% or so away from the user. (Yes that's almost exactly how I put it) Now we may find out if it IS a crime.
But I bought this to root it and attach external storage. To be honest, even if it came with double the advertised 8gb, it still wouldn't make a difference to me.
The current FireTV is unrootable though. So there iż no way to extend storage. I am slowly thinking of moving to Nexus Player - it's at least open although it has an awful remote.

I would wait for Razer's $99.00 upcoming Forge TV MUCH nicer specs same price:good:. Still don't know if it will support storage?
I know most on this forum have no issues modding a device which I am all for. Should it not come standard without the need to mod? Amazon needs to step up to the plate!
Nexus has no wired network unless I'm wrong. At the price they are I also would like to argue over storage but for now I just made my box a 1 trick pony Xbmc and some streamed TV etc and use something else for the rest. I can't buy any games or videos there's no room for paid apps
I recently bought the Oddworld: Stranger game for my AFTV. While my system is rooted, I am not currently using the best method for external storage (4TB drive to be here today), so it would download the game, but then tell me I didn't have enough room to install it.
I ended up resetting my AFTV because I it ended up I needed like an extra 300mb to install the software. Really stupid on Amazon's part. They need to put in usb storage for unrooted peeps.
I guess in my case I am looking at this device without a Mod whatsoever. I am trying to understand Amazon spending Hugh $$$$ + on developing games to market on Fire TV where am I suppose to put them??? I just cant wrap my head around how this is good business sense? Really this is more me venting with frustration as calling Amazon support is useless on this matter heck half of them did not understand what I meant about external storage
Example: Bard Tale alone can be 1.8GB at that rate you are out of space within a few large games?
You do have a very valid point regarding storage. With the current unrootability of newer FTVs it sucks not having the storage expansion. That should be something built into the system. I was lucky to get a new FTV that was rootable after Christmas and now I have it all hooked up. I have probably over 100 games installed on an external WD My Passport with 320GB storage. I installed the Ouya Everywhere apks, with a modded launcher, the Google Play Store, and Nova Launcher. It took some tweaking, but most everything works awesomely. The FTV is a great little device with enough power to make it a usable gaming system. The lack of storage and now unrootability may be its downfall though. The average user is not going to even bother with rooting, let alone the mods needed to expand the storage. Amazon should rethink this for its FTV2.

Amazon recently released a nice game made by their studio - Tales From Deep Space - but it's only available on Fire Tablets, not on Fire TV. I don't know what they are thinking, really.
Check out this guide for moving app data/obb files to external storage (requires root): http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-move-and-run-amazon-fire-tv-apps-from-an-external-usb-storage-drive/
This lets you have more than just one or two big games at a time.
just wondering, are any of those large games actually supported by the AFTV(as in downloaded directly from Amazon's limited Fire TV app store)? or are they ones that exist on other platforms(and not vetted to run on the AFTV) that you side loaded?
The big games (in terms of file size) I have from Amazon are all the GTA titles. I also installed KOTOR from Google Play.

Well, I got my 4TB drive that I hooked up to my aftv using the method that copies the /data folder over. Love it so far, but dang copying stuff from my computer to the aftv with that drive is slow. Thinking I should boot up a linux livecd, hook the usb HD to my computer and copy stuff over that way.
As for games, it depends. If I'm buying the game, i prefer an Amazon Fire TV version. Otherwise I'll try to located a pirated version of it (from a trusted uploader on torrent sites) to test out. And then generally I buy the paid version, but not always. Sort of hard to put money out for GTA SA when I've bought that game like 5 times for various systems so far. And still haven't finished it.
Anyways, Amazon was stupid to put only 8gb of ram in their system and needs to get rolling with usb storage support. While it's not necessarily a gaming machine, for android devices, it's actually a really nice gaming device.
Do you mean this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/general/mounting-external-usb-to-data-t2889319
You all got me thinking about trying it, so I switched this evening. It seems like a better option because some games don't keep their bulk in the data/obb files so there's nothing for FileMount to move.

yes, did method 1, all the data. Got a fast drive, so only limitation is the usb speed. Seems to be okay so far. No complaints.
It is a joke what amazon did with the storage, they said 8bg but when you open the box you have 5.49 space and out of that you have only 4.85gb available to use.....what nonsense! They really didn't think AFTV was going to do well cuz they said gaming was just an added bonus for the AFTV but i suppose once they saw it was one of the hottest item selling on there site they decided add more games.
i use aftv just a media center to run xbmc, i am not prime member.
They are forcing auto updates on AFTV and the latest firmware are not root able as of today. At this point they have 4 options, either wait and see if user will pay for could storage or released a firmware updates which will allow user to use the external storage via USB or come out with AFTV2 with bigger hard drive or discontinue the AFTV.
I for one will not pay could storage or will pay for apps, why do i have to pay for the same app again if i already bought it on google play store, Amazon probably notice that user are not willing paying for the same apps 2x, which is why they offered that $220 free apps bundled during the holidays to keeps folks happy cuz most folks were probably going to return it cuz that $99 device will cost you more cuz u have to buy all the apps again.
Thank you

This is a very good point. I have not added any Mods to my Fire TV the only games come directly from Amazons Store. Little experiment: load all of your standard TV apps. Then go into the Amazon store and just see how many games (Amazon only) you can download and install? Many are rather large 500MB+? Then if you are not technical I would bet many would find it hard to dig down into settings to find how to uninstall? Yeah your games are in the cloud but the bandwidth to keep downloading these games is crazy? In addition I stream ALLOT about 1.2TB a month and I pay extra after 1 TB so every time I download it again its costing me money.
