IDEA: Using the proximity sensor to show Navigation Menu? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I hate the navigation bar taking up screen space. I've seen a mod where the navigation bar can be hidden, but, it would be cool if it could AUTOHIDE the same way the Windows Start Bar can autohide. Then, you could use the proximity sensor to show the bar again by waving your hand over your phone.
Is this doable?
Someone should at least p a. t e n t it before Apple does.

This idea is quite innovative but too bad the proximity sensor is not at the bottom..

Thats an awesome idea..

good idea!!!!
maybe a swiping guesture over the screen is a more practical way of hiding it and poppin it back up

heres hoping someone may be able to implement it. .
and i agree. a gesture should enable/hide it.

That's even better! Wave your hand over the proximity sensor to hide/unhide the navigation bar.
Let's hope we can get a one or more devs on here interested in making this a reality!

It's not so bad to wave your hand over the ear piece. If this idea takes off, maybe mfg'ers will add a second proximity sensor on the bottom in future devices.

Check out an app called Proxy. Very similar to what you're talking about. Personally I found it a little gimicky, but combined with a hidden status bar it could be pretty cool!

This is a brilliant idea, but I agree, the best way would be to have it appear with a gesture - not proximity really.

ADWEX Launcher has a similar feature for the dockbar to hide and unhide by gesture. Maybe this CAN be done...

Get it patent asap.

I believe LMT already has this feature. Search the boards, should be able to find it.

tap tap app allows you to unlock to phone by waving over the phone.
I don't see why this shouldn't work but it would be sooooo much better if the sensor at the bottom.

What would be awesome is to get this to work the way it does in the you tube app where the bar disappears on its own and then touching near where the buttons would be gets the screen to revert. I wish I knew a little about programming but that would be awesome. I love the resolution of this screen but can't help but feel cheated sometimes because we are losing 5-10% of it with the bar at the bottom.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I would actually prefer if they made the bottom transparent (with a small gradient) so that the buttons are there, but not really using space as much...
Or maybe a swipe up from the bottom to bring it back, there are plenty of apps that use gestures like that to run an app or run a task.
I want something like this cause I'm paranoid that the black will cause a burn in effect over time.

Now that AOKP has the 'hide/show navbar' command surely someone knows how to retrofit it into LMT or add it to the gestures in nova launcher?

Transparent navigation bar background.

Is this possible?
A few roms gives you the ability to change the color but is there a way to make the background completely transparent? Would look pretty dope.
Sent from the future.
Would be good but a problem may be, that if there is a button on the bottom of a certian page, lets say eg. the next page button. The nav buttons would overlap
And you wouldnt be able to press it. Thats my theory anyway, but what do i know lol

The nav bar background would still be there just invisible to the eye.
See-through, not completely gone. At least how I had it figured out in my head lol.

Then i dont see why it cant be done thinking about it, aokp has a transparent status bar mod i think, so nav bar should be possible.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I don't THINK it's possible without a lot of clever scripting. From what I can tell, the status bar/nav bar UI "displaces" the drawable screen area. So if the nav bar are present, it nothing is drawn behind them. If they're not present, stuff is drawn, where they go, but uh... they aren't present.
So it might be doable with some trickery, but as far as I know nobody's done it yet.
It's possible and been done many times. There's a thread about it in the themes section.

Navigation button solutions?

I'm looking for the best solution for navigation buttons, so that I can remove my navigation buttons from the bottom of the screen and regain that screen space. What is everyone using to replace the navigation buttons? I know there is LMT, with the pie interface, but I was wondering if there was a better option.
I was thinking, is there a way to use the same gesture to swipe from the bottom that is used for google now, is it possible to put custom actions buttons alongside google now in that area? I hadn't seen it on any roms yet, but wasn't for sure. It seems like that would be a perfect place to put home, back, and recent actions.
Lol if you didn't like the on screen buttons why did u get a galaxy nexus
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda premium
Because its a great device. I have no problem with them, but if there's a better solution, it would be nice to use it.
Anyone have any useful contributions?
Lmt and button savior are the only options. I prefer lmt. We could write a new app to do what you want, but it would be a major project.
After trying both, I think I prefer LMT as well. Maybe in the future we will see a mod to the Google Now shortcut, similar to how custom lock screen targets are done now.

hide the nav bar on lockscreen only?

I remember one of the first ROMs i flashed on my nexus was Code Name Android, and it had the option to hide the navigation bar on the lock screen only.
is this something that can easily be implemented into JB? i noticed it was taken off of ROMs because it interfered with incoming calls when the screen was on (wasn't able to answer call) just curious if it was ever fixed or if this is a simple mod that i could do myself with some layout tweaks or something.
anyone have a clue?
I use Widgetlocker - lock screen replacement app, and it has an option to hide the navigation bar. I highly recommend it, very customizable with tons of sliders/themes to choose from and is very light on using system resources and draining battery.

you sure about that? i know it has the option to hide the navigation bar buttons, but the black bar is still there.
i want the wallpaper to go from the notification bar all the way down to the bottom of the screen.

Oh okay. If that's the case then you'll need to go a different route. Widgetlocker just blacks it out.

[APP] Remove bottom bar

Now that the nexus is rooted, HideBar can also be used to use the full screen:
http://ppareit.github.com/HideBar/
Sorry to be a bother, but could you post a screen shot?
Yes, second for screen shot please
really nice work. I tryed the demo. It will hide the button-bar and the status-bar. But hey 3€ for this improvement is to high. Espacialy because in a few weeks there will be custom roms with this feature, too. Cyanogen and paranoid can do this too with longpress power button and expand Desktop i think.... and for free

It just removes the bar at the bottom of the screen. No point in making a screenshot
The demo is free. It fully works, all features as in the paid version, it just displays a small link to the market for a very short time. You can always buy the version at the market, great way to say thanks!
Does it just remove the bar but keep the buttons? I don't understand.
I think its neat but I wouldn't want to ruin the pure experience. I'll wait for Cyanogenmod to get a feature like this, they always follow Google style spot on.
Thanks this is exactly what I was looking for--just about. I knew I rooted for a reason. Didn't need BusyBox either.
I only wish there were more options to show the nav buttons. The current options are kinda easy to trigger for games.

Not bad. It would be useful to have a toggle on the power off screen menu. Loved that on a ROM I had on my Galaxy Nexus.

damn awesome.
the ghost back button is a little tricky to find, but i'm getting used to it
a gesture to show hide the status bar would make it perfect
I would suggest Fullscreentoggle.apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497558
for removing the navbar
and either GMD gesture controls or button savior (i use both) for navigation. Heres to taking back our entire screen
What I wonder is this. With 3rd party launchers, it's cake to hide the status bar. I swipe down to show it, I swipe down again to hide it. When it's hidden, it still shows for apps that've set the preference to leave it visible, whether or not you've hidden it in the launcher. Why hasn't this been implemented for the NavBar? Is it that much harder to do?

I used this method I'm on day 2 going on day 3 now using button savior and after the first 24 hours worth of use I've gotten used to using button savior and I love getting that extra real estate back. I was gonna post this method using the fullscreentoggle.apk while using button savior but I see u beat me to it.

I have been trying to use both of these apps but I cannot get them to function. Well button savoir works by showing the bottoms on the right when I want but I cannot get full screen to work..
I like the hide bar demo app but hate the ads. I just may have to buy. Just seems like there are so many apps that do so much for less than half the cost. I know it isn't a ton of cash but the app purchases add up.
The full screen app should make the bar disappear anyhow I believe..

Anyone else getting 'glitching/flicking' wallpaper on the home screens using the demo version ? ..maybe a reboot will fix, will try later.
Using a live wallpaper though is fine.
I'm still using it though, awesome app. If it's confirmed the full version is without this problem then i'm buying.
Luv having the full screen real estate! Im using the Fullscreentoggle.apk and Button Savior combination.

Minimize on screen nav-keys

Just saw the Huawei Ascend, they have an option for minimizing the on screen buttons, next to the back button.. Very nice! Is it difficult to make for our Nexus4 ?

Not everyone uses AOKP though. I like stock and have been looking for the same exact thing. This is would be useful if it was universal
very nice feature.
i hope the next nexus have something like this..to hide/unhide the nav bar anytime you want while onscreen.. the aokp using time out..can be frustrating at time..
In AOKP you can also have a quick toggle for that previously mentioned auto-hide Navbar feature - so you can turn the feature on before playing a game or whatever (and still have quick access to the navbar buttons): Screenshot.
You can also add an option to enable/disable the navbar from the Power Menu (just straight up disable it, without the autohide): Screenshot.
Though I do agree, having a button on the navbar to quickly minimize it (like the Huawei ascend) would be pretty awesome.

Downlaod the app mentioned above GMD Gesture. You have to set it up in settings where it hides the nav bar/status bar on screen unlock, and show nav/status bar on screen off. There seems to be an issue if you dont have the nav bar "showing" while the screen is off, when you get a call your screen will not turn on. It took me awhile to get it set up correctly. Now it works, but if I have my screen on doing anything on the phone and the nav bar is hidden if I get a call I still will not see who it is unless I push the button to turn my screen off the back on. One more thing if you dont use a live wallpaper when waking your screen up your background will be all black for a sec or two then your background comes up. Live wallpapers have no problem. Other than those issues it works fine. I have another gesture setup to manually hide/unhide the nav bar also, if I did want to use it. Oh yea, the nav bar and notification hide/unhide together fyi. Hope you're not to confused after reading that lol.

No confusion, and thanks for the reply, but this seems way too broken at the moment. If you have to do this many work-arounds and have this many issues you have to deal with, then the app should be free not $5.56.
I am interested in the single button on the navbar as well. Bump this hoping there is a dev that can mod something here. deodexed/stock.
+1 for single button! Cool
