Hello,
i have a Problem with my Defy, i have no working Clockworkmod (CWM) or other Custom Recovery Mod.
Now my Defy have the Bootloop and the only thing i can reach ist the Stock Recovery Mode.
In there i can only install a update.zip, but all versions i would instal from CWM give a signature error.
Is it possible to install a Custom Recovery Mod only with the Stock Recovery Mode?
After this i can start the Custom Recovery Mod and install my last used Custom Rom, without losing my data.
Greetings.
Stock recovery can not flash anything that does not come from motorola, and it can not be replaced due to the fact that the bootloader is locked. Your only solution is to reflash/flash an sbf through rsdlite

Ok, that means that the thread on xda, do sign a update.zip, doenst work realy?
If i reflash the same sbf and the same custom rom, are the data deleted?
In most installation guides it says wipe manual?!
Thanks.

The zips on XDA are to flash with the 2nd-init recovery. To install that you must be rooted and use an app on the market (2nd-init installer). But that custom recovery does not replace the stock one seen as we can't overwrite it.
In order to flash a new sbf:
In stock recovery wipe data/factory reset
Plug phone in PC in bootloader mode (power+vol up?)
Flash sbf with RSDLite
Pretty easy, find which sbf was for your contry/carrier .

Hello,
thanks, what a pity that after a bootloop the data are not accessible anymore.
Greetings.
Because i was in the Bootloop i risk to install the same SFB that i have all the time installed, without anything wiping.
It works! I have acces to all my Data! I make a backup of everything und then i wiped to make a clean install.
Now i am on a new sbf and a newer rom, without losing any data.

How did you manage that without 2nd-init recovery?
Sent from my 1Ghz CM7 + CM9 Defy
I think he used titanium backup, SMS backup & Restore...
In fact I saw that there is a problem in the links for the 2ndInit apk in Pedrodh thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
All the downloading files at the end of the first post are in zip format now.:-(
So without custom recovery its impossible to use them. But I can be wrong and there is a way to do that?
No i was in bootloop and have only acces to the stock rom manager.
I take the phone in the bootmodus and flashed my old used sbf with rds, without wiping.
Then I start the phone normaly and see that some things was from the stock sbf and some things was from the custom rom that i used before. In my case Pays Rom Defy 5.1 .
Then i look if the Data were accesible, and yes it was. it backup my sms and contacts with MyPhoneExplorer.
Reboot in stock manager again, wipe all data and installed a new sbf and new miui custom rom, like the install guide it said.

hi
I´ve rooted and flashed my desire several times. rooted with unrevoked3 everytime and tried different roms like leedroid 2.2d, 2.2 f and rcmixhd 0.13. First time i did it i flashed leedroid 2.2d and it worked fine. After 1,5 months running leedroid my phone rebooted due to the overheating problems that 50 % of us suffer from (i rebooted it manually several times during those months and it worked until this day).
It got stuck at the bootupscreen with white background and green HTCtext. couldn´t install RUU via windows, had to grab the PB99IMG.zip onto my SD and boot into bootloader and restore my phone this way. Then i rooted it AGAIN, and flashed rcmixhd 0.13. Success! But only until i rebooted it manually, stuck at bootupscreen again.
I restored the phone from SD with pb99img as earlier. Flashed rcmixhd again and made sure i wiped everything (dalvik, cache, formatted sdcard and created a EXT), success! Until i rebooted my desire...back again.
Now im running stock non-rooted froyo. I´m getting tired of spending the night fixing it but i still want to use senseHD and i like tweaking stuff..
Do any of u guys recognize this problem and what can i do to fix it?
If any of you are from sweden, plz answer in swedish!
Same problem here, the only way i got to install a custom rom was by installing update-cm-6.1.0-Desire-signed.zip. Then installed a custom rom by using the "Rom Manager" tool.
Downloading and flashing through recovery mode, "No, can do!"
Ok, but "update-cm-6.1.0-Desire-signed.zip" isn´t that a custom ROM? Did you install that through ROM manager?
And did you flash another ROM on top of it?

yes this is a custom rom, i did a normal flash first to "update-cm-6.1.0-Desire-signed.zip" (some how that worked???). Then i reflashed through the "ROM manager" tool.
Do you remember to always wipe everything in Recovery before flashing a new rom?
Seems like I always used to have a bootloop or bootfreeze when did not do the proper wipe.

i wiped everything even the Dalvik Cache, didn't help a thing.
Could is be that is has something to do with rom's that are not signed?
I have this same problem now, any possible sollutions?
Perdonally i would suggest to reformat your sd cards and try again. Dont forget to wipe everything.

i'm not sure i get what you mean...
1.install the driver and rsd
2.down a stock rom,a sbf
3.set your rsd in option ,first come first service, then restart it
4.turn your defy into bootloader mode
5.connect your phone and pc via usb
6.choose your sbf file and flash it.
6.1 after you flash sbf,if you cannot into the system ,you can try do a full wipe
7.now you have a stock 2.2,if you want a froyo leaked ,you need root your phone and do a reboot, then install clockworkmod ,i remeber it's a apk, then you open it after you install it, you can install clockworkmod ,before reboot into cwm,you need turn off usb adb.
can i finish it after i have my diner?
good works!
good works!
Wht s rsd n adb?
Nandrod+fixed sbf method
Flashing SBF directly with RSD lite will not not affect the phone, but affect your wanrraty, no official update in INDIA yet for froyo.
Better you follow nandrod+fixed sbf method.
1. Root your phone with Super one click.
2. Installed System recovery.
3. boot into system recovery and backup your system if you want.
4. Wipe DATA/CACHE/DALVIK CACHE.
5. Restore Nandroid backup of froyo of your choice which should be already copied to SD.
6. Go directly in the Boot loader after system restart by pressing Vol up button during restart.
7. Flashed Fixed SBF of corresponding froyo.
8. Let the system Reboot in foryo.
You can back to eclair any time with this method by direct flashing 2.59 SBF with RSD lite in case your need.
Why? Say that he bricks his phone, then his phone can not be retrieved even by Moto guys as even they use rsdlite so simply speaking they will never be able to figure what actually caused the phone to brick...

rsd lite is a software which is used by Motorola to flash firmware to a phone's memory.
ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a tool that comes with the Android SDK that allows you to control and interface with your Android device. It is located in the tools folder when you unpack the SDK.

and what happen when we had some faulty part or so and then go to service????
Service people obviously check the software installed!!!!!!!
With locked bootloader there are very very few chances that you will brick DEFY. You have to be more fool than a fool to brick your defy!!!
OKAY
I used rsd ,used adb, used sbf and everything ..........i too bricked once and survived via rsd.........now well versed in these techs
No signal problem after froyo update....
I followed all instructions perfectly and got 2.2.2 uk stock rom working with its fixed sbf but i cannot get 2g network signal, but wen the restore to my original eclair firmware, I get full signal..
Please help me guys....
after flashing 2.2 put this file in sd card and flash it through recovery

I would recommend CM7 by Quarx
Much more faster than moto 2.2
z4root is not working for rooting, is it? mine is bought from India with the 2.59.0 update already given. the z4root app crashes after showing "acquiring root shell". and i've tried many times (even after rebooting), but the same thing happens. and any ideas when froyo will be out here officially? the motorola forum says late Q2 in Asia Pacific regions.
yay! SuperOneClick 1.7 does the trick. phone rooted. i hope it can be unrooted when needed.

You can get these all steps in sticky thread **** FAQ | Guides |Tutorials ****.
Anyway below are the steps with links:
1. Root With SuperOneclick (Reboot Required after this)
2. Download Tenfar recovery apk from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=467632
3. Install this APK (save on your card and use browser to install) and open it and and click on Install Recovery system, will ask you superuser request, click allow. Wait till it installed.
4. Click Recovery Boot.
5. System will reboot into recovery.
6. Now with volume up/down buttons move to backup and restore.
7. Click power button to get into back and restore
8. Get into backup option in similar manner to backup your system.
9. It will start backing your files and after completing task return to menu.
10. Now back to your main menu and enter in click on Wipe data /factory reset and click yes, similary wipe cache partition.
11. Go to advance and click on clear dalvik cache (very imp from my point).
12. Now go back and click on backup and restore and restore your Nandroid backup (save your downloaded nandroid back in sdcard\goapkrev\backup before entering recovery)
13. After restoring backup click reboot the system, make sure that you press vol up immediately after pressing power button it, otherwise you will be in bootloop. Remove battery if necessary (don’t think you will need this)
14. This will make defy to boot in bootloader.
15. Now flash fixed sbf froyo with RSDLite. Let it complete the process, will take hardly 2 min. to write fixed system and will boot automatically
16. And you will be in Froyo (first will take a time to create dalvic cache)
Make sure that you have Motorola driver installed for your defy.
I am using 3.4.2_177-Nand.NORDIC_DEBLUR.zip (http://m.cfa.aero/nand/3.4.2_177-Nand.NORDIC_DEBLUR.zip) and 3.4.2_177-Fixed.NORDIC_DEBLUR.sbf (http://m.cfa.aero/fsbf/3.4.2_177-Fixed.NORDIC_DEBLUR.sbf) fixed sbf file which I think are latest.
Original file for 2.59 is at http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy from India section.
This is also helpful when you plan to move CM7.
Cheers…Happy flashing

Make SURE you don't have 2ndinit and CWM/Rom Manager running at the same time! You'll end up in an infinite boot-loop!!!
If your defy is un-modified right now you should get superoneclick from the store and root your phone. (You install superoneclick on your PC) If you have already modified/rooted you still want Manager to make a backup.
After rooting, install Rom Manager. I really like this program and it makes checking out different ROM's a breeze.
For instance: I have 3 different backup files saved right now... One is a bare, non-rooted 2.2.2 Froyo; one is an initial, rooted load of CM7; and the third is my current, app-loaded, theme loaded, all menu settings where I want backup.
When Rom Manager says it can't flash clockworkmod recovery, just say you have installed your own, and I chose v3.
Use the Manager to do a system backup!
Use Manager to download and install a rom. Or you can download a .zip file from wherever and put it on the SD card and tell Manager to install it.
Ciao

I had a trouble with my old CM7 after try to install a new BOOTLOADER, as I explain in this post
Now I follow the instructions in this post and I have a 4.5.1-134-DFP-132-Android 2.3.6, and I wans't able to downgrade. I flashed various Full SBF, some worked some not.
I was trying to install a CM rom but I can't, I even don't know which one I have to chose.
Can some one give me a link with the one I must use?
I got the rom rooted with SuperOneclick and sndInit instaled the 1.0.7 BL instaled.
Thanks
I wonder... what is the puprose of installing updated kernel and bootloader? What did it give to you???
I guess nothing good, in my case now I'm locked with a ROM I dislike, full BLUR and battery drain... :_(

well grosss! the sbf you ve flashed. its mentioned above there that no downgrade to GB 2.3.4. and can't even flash cm7. so betta not to flash those. try flashing MS2Ginger By Walter79 or any defy+ Rom or any rom of spears DHT. this would definately help you. after that you could downgrade .but never flash the full sbf as you hae done
Whenever you install a new ROM or zip file, do a wipe data / cache before and after, to be sure.
If you do not make any new SBF will not work.
To do this, turn on the device with the vol-button pressed until the icon appears Custon recovery. After that press Vol + (or both together), select wipe data / factory and then cache (go to Vol-/ + and OK button to power on / off).
If the android does not start, reinstall the SBF and do the procedure again.
Hi. All was working well when I was running Quarx's version of CM10 on my Green Lens Defy. I could update to each new update CM10 ROM by clearing the data and cache then flashing the ROM and GApps. After that, I wiped the dalvik cache and reboot. Note my Defy is using a Froyo kernel.
Then I decided to try out Codename Android JB Beta and I did what I normally did with the ROM and then GApps. I ended up stuck in a bootloop. No problem I thought. I'd just reflash Quarx's own version of CM10 after wiping data and cache. I got stuck in a bootloop again. Odd. I tried it with older versions of Quarx's CM10 and they result in me getting stuck in a bootloop as well. So I flashed the US T-Mobile SPF for the Defy using RSD Lite then I logged in to BLur and such as that is needed to access the homescreen where I then turned on USB debugging. I then plugged in my phone into my computer to use SuperOneClick Root to root my device. It said my device was already rooted though I don't think that should happen since I flashed a stock 2.1 SPF. Well I rebooted and installed the 2ndinit apk then installed 2ndinit using the app. I think it said that 2ndinit was already installed. But if my memory is wrong in this case, I then installed 2ndinit and rebooted my Defy but I never got a blue LED.
Then I did the same steps as I did previously over and over again with variations to try to get it to work.
Can someone help?
I caution anyone who may attempt to install Codename Android JB Beta from CM10.
On another matter, downloading an OTA update then rebooting when pressing "install now" brings me to the triangle with exclamation screen and gets stuck there.
Have you done a fullwhipe in the Motorola Recovery before flashing the SBF??(usually you would get a bootloop without fullwhiping but maybe the solution is that easy )
And why did you flash a 2.1 SBF you should maybe try some other SBFs like the Froyo SBFs for your Country
