So far, there has been no solution to restore IMEI other than sending your phone to a service center.
i didnt backup
I'll say it again.
Send your phone to an authorized service/repair center.
Just restore a stock rom will fix it i gues. But i have a backup a backup if needed. From a simlock free phone (Dutch) If you still need it tomorrow tell. I can upload. For no i got to go to werk and sleep after it.

Here i have the "bml5: block level representation of /dev/stl5 (efs)" Its from Android V2.3.3 Dutch lang. (EU) Its from a simlock free phone. If you're phone is not simlock free you might brick you're phone restoring this file. But you might be able to just use some files from it.
Links efs here: http://www.mediafire.com/myfiles.php#40r2f7d5q02hf
It would be best to flash a V2.3.3 stock rom before trying this.

I always make backups of my EFS but I don't know exactly what it is for and how they work. If someone gives you a backup of their EFS will it work or is it related to the machine?

Well, I guess you need to flash back original Sammy ROM and bring it back to Samsung, no other choice. Sorry
Like above flash back your original stock rom. Pretty sure this is the only way.

This basically means you have corrupted the EFS partition of your phone. This can only be fixed in two ways:
1. Like @johntheredimid mentioned, you need to restore the backup (if you took a backup) of your EFS partition before it was corrupted. The method for restore can be found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420902
2. If you didn't take a backup, you need to take your phone to a service center and ask them to fix it for you. Would probably have to have your board replaced. So you should install your country's firmware and unroot properly before taking it there. Unrooting methods can be found in the general section.
Looks like this problem is widespread

so u flashed older firmwares via Odin.... to get back IMEI :good:
will u please tell which firmware version you have installed for android 4.1.2
as there are many firmwares available .....or else please provide a sammobile link
Hi guys, i seriously need help here. Please refer to attached screenshot.
I came here after flashing sokp 4.2.2 rom, and it prompted me an error saying encryption was unsuccessful. After which, i wasnt able to use my phone since then.
I tried to flash stock rom, and I end up with this. Please dont tell me to search the forums because Ive been to them countless times. I suppose this is a efs issue, because baseband and imei are unknown and I do not have a backup for it. Tried with the writing tool for imei, doesnt work as well.
Pls ask me for any info u might need/i missed out to help with this issue.
I think it's in the efs folder, you have to use a root browser and edit factory mode to off instead of on. It's been a long time since I saw factory mode so I'm not 100%

Thanks for your reply. But even if I off factory mode, will the baseband and imei be unknown?
I'm not sure but if it doesn't the 2 things that might be worth trying are, emergency firmware recovery with kies or mskips toolkit has a rescue package but I think you have to go to skipsoft.net now as the thread was closed

It's current value is "OFF"...u have to write "ON"...i know it sounds weird but that is the value. Amd if u don't have any previous back up of EFS then there's nothing u can do at home to bring it back. Same thing happened to mine and i got it repaired from a local shop for cheap...they used z3x box...the problem is my IMEI is correct and network works fine...but everytime i flash a ROM i have to take it to the shop and get the modem patched or else it doesn't connect to network. So go to Samsung service centre and get it fixed by them...they'll charge u more but their fix is permanent.

Alright, it seems like i have a backup of the efs, bt the nv_data.bin file is not included, and i read on other threads that this file is responsible for the imei and all? This backup is dated in aug2013, but it doesnt help in restoring my phone because the efs pro software doesnt see this as a backup file. Im actually looking for one of the thread that actually taught how to edit the nv_data.bin file, but no luck till date.
This thread might help

ok my phone's all fixed up now. If anyone is interested to know, samsung kies original firmware helped.
hello ,
yesterday i woke up to find my note2 not working saying insert sim card
and when i tried to check imei it says null null
i never tried to install rom or root my phone , i just bought it 2 weeks ago
i've searched all the forums and found that people only get that error when they try to flash their device but i didnt .. it just suddenly happened
would you please guide me to fix it ?
my phone is galaxy note 2 N7100 and it has 4.3 jellybean
I suggest you to take your phone back. I think it is a hardware problem. You can do nothing for that. If your phone was rooted and has a backup of your original efs partition (IMEI) only than it is possible to recover your IMEI.

that phone was shipped to me from dubai and it has no warranty .. i cant do that
Oh thats bad. You must find a service who has good knowledge about Android phones. Did you checked your phone after you received it. Maybe the phone was without real IMEI. So far I know the GSM prowiders allow a couple days to use your unregistered device.

hmmm
well thats bad
you haven't tried to root and flash custom rom at least if so if u have tried it is possible you might lose imei and which is why it is advisable to make an EFS back up.it could be a hardware related problem..try taking it to the samsung service center they are the ones who can really help you.
Try this solution: use Root Explorer enter to EFS folder, delete NV_DATA.BIN and NV_DATA.BIN.MD5. Reboot your device and check imei.

If device is shipped with broken seal on box then...
It's stolen by someone & sold him online.
& I think someone(frustrated Owner) knows & banned his IMEI via complain.and that's why he got null error while no reason at all.
It's just a guess.
