The three pins on the phone... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

What's the three "pins", dots or whatever you want to call it on the right side of the phone, what does it do? Is it like a dock station or something?

They are supposed to be used in conjunction with a car dock or desk dock to leave the end of the phone open (Think about our phones in a dock, sideways, in your car being plugged into the charging port) the problem is, is that Samsung doesn't see enough customer want and therefor is not currently planning on making said accessories.
Well I'll be damned, just found this posted:

Could have something to do with the extortionate prices they wanted for them.
£49.99 for a dock? I expect at least a spare charger to come with it. However, this was not to be the case.
£49.99 for a piece of shaped plastic, with some die-cast weights inside, and 3 copper charging connectors. That's value for you

If it makes you feel better, the US version for Verizon is $49.99 but doesn't use said connectors, it's just a piece of cheap plastic with holes for cables.

Eeeessshh, that's a steep price. Audio out isn't a desired feature to me. I'll just stick with my free one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497881

Look up the nexus one car and desk dock to see. That phone had the same 3 docking pins.
It sucks that we just recently found out that samsung cancelled production for these though...

That sucks. Wanted to buy both.

I was just wondering if I could ask a potentially naive but somewhat related question.
How do the three pins work? I'm assuming you'd need to use two for charging (+ve and -ve)? How do get everything else through just one pin? Have I got the wrong end of the stick?
Thanks, Rowan.

They would sell so many more accessories if they didn't try and pork people do bad.

Samsung canceled the car dock?
God I hope Motorola makes the next Nexus. Samsung is the worst.

Lol, great idea to combine 2 technologies

the outer pins are for charging the inner pin is for grounding i believe, i don't think it has audio capabilities

Car docks for Droid X

Have there been any pics released of the official car dock for Droid X? Or any other Droid X-specific car docks?
There have been. There were videos as well. I cannot remember where though. I want to know how it knows when it is plugged in and if this could be replicated so that I can use a cheaper dock...
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=droid+x+car+dock
lol at navychief52 I didn't know such a thing, i'm going to use it all the time now.
But yes it can be replicated, here's the new feature though that you loose by using a generic car dock. It has a built in charging port, which means you can just slide your phone into the dock and not have to wire up a charger to it too.
as for the part where you put it in and it automatically starts up the car app, all you need is a magnet, atleast thats how i found the last droid docks worked. I don't know what strength it has to be for it's magnetic sensor to trigger the app, but I don't think it has to be very powerful at all. But I would glue that to the back of your generic car dock and you should be good to go. I know thats what I'll be doing.

Ah thanks for that! I figured it would just be a magnet but wasn't sure. If I could find a dock with a nice beefy arm like the oem car dock then I would just use that. So far the only kind that I find are the ones that have a long bendable metal tube. Need something with more strength... To be fair I have not been looking too hard core yet.
I just do not like the idea of buying a dock for a device that I will probably not have a year later...
Besides the Droid X being unveiled today in New York, this car dock made an appearance as well.
can you keep the line in audio plug plugged into the car dock or do you need to plug it in manually to the phone everytime? I use a line in plug
I've looked at everything, but I cannot find an answer to this.

It has a cable loom on the car dock for the wire however it goes into the phone.
Only the USB goes to the dock.
They really need to figure out a pass through or something for these things.
At least the dock is very solid and easy to use. But agreed, would have been nice to plug jack into dock and dock have attached short cable to go into phone. So even if you have to plug every time, it is made easier.
Looks like I'll just get this bluetooth adapter for my car instead.

Anyone know of something similar that plugs into an aux line like this one? I might get this, but I'm open to different stuff if it's better.

when you check out, use the coupon code: WOOT for $20 off ($9.99 total including shipping)
can't beat that price and it looks like a pretty solid car dock. first review mentions that it is good with the Droid X.
thanks for the heads up! it looks pretty good! however, im concerned with the adhesive disk that is applied to our devices.... does it stick out... and would it affect cases and other things etc...
i honestly am not sure, but i ordered a ****ty $1 silicone case from ebay that i'll be using with the mount haha.
Silcon isn't that the soft cases? i'm not sure that would hold my phone tight enough, i drive a truck so there is lots of bouncing around. I think i'm gonna buy a cheep belt clip case, that way i can just clip the phone in and out.
so my mount came in literally 2 days after i ordered. ridiculously fast shipping; they must be located nearby. haven't installed yet but it's pretty small and unobtrusive. seems like a good buy thus far. the discs that stick to the back of your device (comes with 2) are a lot skinnier than i thought they would be. might just put it on my normal everyday case. i don't think i'll run into problems slipping it in and out of my project with the disc on the back.
I've ordered mine as well as ordering a cheep belt clip so i can snap it in and out. Too me the twisting motion (while awesome for the secure locking) seems a bit much for my lifestyle of always jumping in and out of my car.
Ill probably use the 2nd disc on the same clip so i can have landscape and portrait

Just ordered one myself. For $10 shipped, I figured I might as well give it a shot.
I got my "Slip Grip" mount in the mail today and for the $20 bucks it cost it is very much worth it.
The mount is VERY sturdy, seller shipped it same day too!! Check it out!
Only downside is it is just a mount, it doesn't have any plugs for power n such, but does leave all of the ports available if you had like a car charger or AUX cable running while it is in there.
Got the car mount from vzw today have to say it is bulkier than my Droid 1 mount, but that is expected with this phone. Looks good on the dash mount in an F250.

Judging from the pictures, it looks like you probably do have to take it out of the case. It seems to be a pretty snug fit. I haven't been able to find any reviews/feedback about the car dock, tho. So I can't confirm.
Finally available, I'll probably get it from the egg. Does anyone know if the phone detects that it is in a dock as apposed to just being plugged in?

The desk dock does trigger the phone to pull up either desk home or other things like some dock clock apps. I'd imagine the car dock will either will do the same thing, or know that's it is the car dock and do something specific to that.
One annoying thing on the desk dock is it has an audio out port, which would be great as the speaker is hard to hear considering the dock fits nice and snug. But they also give a nice announcement paper with the dock saying the audio out feature will work when Froyo is released for the phone.
With all the background noise in a car, audio out would be even more important. Since they seem to have cut a hole out in the mount where the speaker is, I'm guessing they're going the practical route with it and not counting on Froyo.

Thats what I thought at first too, but Im not entirely sure. The TomTom has its own GPS software in it as well, so you're bypassing the i987 entirely, both software and hardware. There is an app called "Bluetooth GPS Provider" that just reads what the TomTom is transmitting and uses it instead.
I received the Samsung Captivate Vehicle Mount and I'm very impressed with the quality of the piece. I had been using one of the generic mounts (mGrip) and although it did it's job, I wasn't satisfied. Most generic mounts use a flexible gooseneck stalk to hold the phone. This flexibility allows the phone to bounce and vibrate - it's just not steady.
There is no flexibility in the Samsung mount. No bobbing and weaving . . . none!! The phone is positioned in the mount securely and accurately, and once the phone is installed the piece with the power usb connector slides into the phone to secure the connection. There is also an external speaker jack that will become functional once we receive froyo 2.2.
When the phone is put into the mount and the mount connector piece is slid into position to mate with the phone, the phone automatically goes into the navigation desktop providing 5 large icons for the navigation functions.
The mount comes with a car charger cord included, no need to purchase one separately. Price is kind of high at $50, but it will be cheaper on eBay or discount sides if you're willing to wait awhile longer.
If you're looking for a high quality mount that provides an exact fit for your phone, proper automatic insertion and alignment (via the sliding power bracket) of the mini-usb connector and rock solid stability, this unit is the one to get.
Be aware that this mount will ONLY work with the Captivate - the other Galaxy S phones will not fit. AND Samsung mounts for the other Galaxy S phones will not work with the Captivate because of the case shape differences and the differing positions of the usb connector.
Hope this helps those looking for a vehicle mount for their Captivate.

Hmmm...
I guess the question is... Where does it do the GPS calculations at- the software that runs on top of the OS or the driver that runs below it? I don't know enough about it to know for sure- but if we knew it should help narrow it down.

I assume you're reading that from the included instructions. If so, that would make two places (home dock) where Samsung has mentioned in writing their intent to provide the update of Froyo to Captivate owners. They need to get it out already.

USB Cradle Dock with Battery Charger

My phone sits by my computer most of the time, and with my HTC Mogul, then HTC Touch Pro, then EVO 4G I've bought a combo cradle/battery charger. I haven't seen one mentioned available here for the Epic 4G Touch and I just found/bought one on eBay and thought I'd mention it for others interested in a device like this. Question for anyone that has purchased this dock..
Have you been able to charge your phone with any type of case on it? Thanks.
Just a quick update. I got the charger, but I don't have an Epic 4G Touch yet. The first seller I bought the phone from ended up being from a scammer. I gave the dock/charger to a friend, and bought another one that's already here. I should have the Epic 4G Touch from another seller here by Tuesday and will post my impressions soon after.
Damn, sorry to hear that..

I kind of wanted one that you could rest the phone in and charge it with a cover on, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

This one looks nice, but some of the reviews for this brand (for other phones) mentions it covers up the speaker so when the phone is docked the sounds are silenced since the speaker is at the bottom. Although this may be true for all these 3rd party docks.
It's cool, Paypal resolution against the scammer just resolved today and they sided with me and already credited my PayPal account.
---
For that other cradle from Amazon, though you probably can put it on its side I'd be concerned with the side buttons/hitting the desk and possibly being pressed in, and possibly the device itself slipping out. The other concern I have with that model is that I can't clearly see the extra battery charger compartment. The one I got should accommodate extended batteries, but I can't tell on that model.

it looks like the one from Amazon just a different brand.. it also covers the speaker so I wonder if you can hear the alarms or music... there may be enough room behind the actual phone to allow the sound to be heard, but it doesnt look like it.
Quick first impressions:
* Feels solid and fits snugly, so pay attention when docking the phone in as it aligns only one way.
* When no battery is in the battery charging slot there's a LED that flashes crazy fast green/red which may bother some people. You can always cover it up with electrical tape. I don't notice it most of the time since my phone blocks the LED anyways when docked.
* A significant negative and quite surprising difference in the dock compared to the docks I had for my EVO 4G / Touch Pro and Mogul are that this dock only has one USB slot. So it either charges the battery and phone from a wall plug or it charges the battery and connects/charges the phone via your computer's USB port. My previous phone docks had 2 USB connectors, one for the battery and one for the phone. I haven't tried connecting this to my computer or charging an extra battery yet but I'm figuring trying to charge two things at the same time via one USB cable, especially when connected to a computer USB port would not be very efficient.
Update 12/09/2011: Argh, deal breaker, just got my Trexcell 3800mah Extended Battery, but because of the location of the battery contact on the battery and dock it won't fit, .
Killabee and talynone
that second black dock is the one I am interested in. my PRIMARY concern with docks that use the charging jack on the phone (whatever happened to dedicated dock "contacts" on phones Cheap SOB's)
is that I want the phone IMMOBILIZED while in the dock. ie I don't want to be able to TILT the phone forward while in the dock "stressing and breaking" the usb jack on the phone.
IE I want the dock to RESTRICT the movement of the phone to vertical only (insert remove dock connector type motion)
the first dock in this thread would NOT prevent the phone from tilting forward.
the second one I am not sure about. do those sides "wrap" around the edge of the phone enough to restrict its movement to a solid slide and NO forward slop?
Here is a video of what I mean. (its processing give it a few minutes to process)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhWtz5EU_Rg
nerys71,
I saw your video and can tell you that the phone in this dock is not restricted from tilting. So yes it will tilt while charging. I am talking about this dock:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OTXKK4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3CZ5XR3PIAJMS
ahh pity. I assume you have it? does the phone protrude past the front "AT ALL" in that dock? IE it looks like it would be friendly to modding it with 2 "lips" on the front to prevent the phone tilting.
Yeah I have it. It doesn't pertrude at all. The phone sits flush.

Landscape dock/car dock same for GSM & LTE?

Anyone know if these accessories work for both models? The dimensions are so close that it might. It seems implied that they will but I haven't read anything to confirm this. Cases are a totally different matter of course.
A number of people here have said that LTE cases fit the GSM phone fine.
I would be VERY surprised if the accessories didn't work with each other. From a design standpoint it would be very easy to make them interchangeable and it'd just be wasteful and expensive not to.

Well the question is whether the docks can be made to accept the slightly thicker LTE version & the GSM version, and also line up 3 pogo pins to the three gold contacts, and firmly hold both models (at least for the car mount this is important).
Does anyone have an answer for this? I am curious too. I want to buy the verizon car dock for my GSM Nexus, but only if it will fit properly.
I stopped at Verizon store near my house and put my GSM phone in the car dock with out issue. Didn't check to see if the pins lined up but imagine they would.
The GSM phone also fits into the side pouch with kickstand that Verizon carriers, including all the cutouts for pins, headphones usb and such

I have not been to the Verizon store to confirm, but i read somewhere online that someone got the car dock and some other Galaxy Nexus accessories from the Verizon store. they might not have them out, but if you ask a rep, they can probably get them from the back for you. YMMV depending on the store though.
couple questions.. if someone can confirm that Verizon is indeed selling the car docks, can you tell me how much they're selling it for and most importantly if it has a slot for the power button? out of all the pics I've seen, its not clear whether you're able to hit the power button while docked

I can guarantee the Verizon store on Military Rd in Niagara Falls NY has the card dock. If I remember correctly it is 39.95 which made me laugh because in Canada Bell is selling the dock for $89.95
I will likely be going to the states again this weekend and if I do, I will try to remember to stop by the Verizon store again and check out the card dock again about the power button.
BE CAREFUL, there are reasons why the the Verizon car dock ($39.95 vise $89.95) is cheaper than other places.
I just looked at the Verizon car dock. It does not take advantage or the pogo pins. It has a cutout on the bottom of the dock for plugging in the micro USB, into actual phone each time you put the phone in dock:-( There is no USB port on the side of the mount.
Repeat it is different than the style than what I have seen pictures from Samsung.
I know what your going to say and sadly I did not think to take any pictures.

I know what your going to say and sadly I did not think to take any pictures.

thanks for clearing that up. Wasn't planning on getting the Verizon dock anways. Sorry to the others whos hope I may have gotten up.
The GMS dock is more expensive because you can plug in usb power & 3.5mm audio permanently into the base near the windshield. The cheap Verizon part must have the cable dangling and plug USB in every time. Might as well buy generic car mount.
Again Verizon pushes out garbage at a consumer price point they can increase profit on.
Please post if you find you can run power/audio on GSM mount with the thicker Verizon phone.
I can also confirm that the dock Verizon is selling is a basic shell. No integrate USB and Headphone jack. In fact, I'll be returning it tomorrow, the headphone jack is not cut out enough for my car's jack even.
LTE nexus fits in GSM dock?
Dam
Bell canada wins !
But 89.99 too much . Anyone selling the gsm dock online ? (Uk?)

I found this out the hard way today as well. Just a cheap shell and won't even engage any car dock settings. Returning it tomorrow and would love to find something that does work with the pins so it knows its in a dock.
Hope the media dock the rep ordered me today doesn't have the same problem.
I definitely want the gsm car dock for my vzw gn, but you can use tags and NFC to push it into car dock mode. I will be using these for many things.
I heard mention of the gsm docks not coming until january. Not sure if that's the case or not, but they are sure hard to find.
HTCpedia has the car dock with pins for $40 and is expected to be in stock on the 29th of this month for anyone interested.

The pictures and the description disagree. The pictures and price are of the crappy mount. The description describes the good mount, I'm going to assume its the crappy one because 2/3 points to the **** one.

My head hurts from slamming it into my desk over 900 data connection location...

...I know as a community most are not fond of a proprietary connector on a device.
I ride the fence ont hat one.
What I think we can agree on though, is that data and charge cables should not be on the tops of devices as this makes for incredibly stupid dock and mounting options in vehicles.
Am I wrong? This is sort of a big deal to me. I have been dealing with Samsung Focus data on top and it is awful.
If you have a dock, ok I see your point. No dock, don't care...top bottom side...who cares.
How do you connect in your car? This is my major area of issue. For me it is a power cable and stereo plug right now. Wish it was on the bottom of my phone, could at least fabricate a easy-in, easy-out method.

I personally love and prefer the top micro usb. So that when I am at my desk I don't have a cable curving around the bottom or side. I don't have a dock or a stand, so as far as laying flat on a desktop I am looking forward to it.
my car has Bluetooth, and I don't see a problem with plugging it in via the top in my car phone mount. Much better than a side connection imo.

I totally agree, Docks can be made to work no matter where the port is. I believe the Lumia 800 has a car dock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_u8qi2lRkQ&feature=youtu.be
