Sup guys, just got my gs2 and almost let my buddy do it but he messed his up pretty good. What's a good way to root and flash roms on this phone and what's a good stable rom? Thanks guys for helping out.

Check the stickies, in the general section. But basically if you're on 2.3.5 use one click then rom manager.
If on 2.3.6 use odin and flash cwm then use cwm to flash a rom

Once you have clockwork mod recovery on your sgs2 you can install custom roms, and most importantly, make backups. this should be your 1st order of business.

Definitely read the stickies/FAQs.
This is what I used to root my SG2 last week:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194
As far as ROMs, I'm currently on Darkside 2.3 and it's perfect for me.
Edit:
After rooting and before flashing the ROM, I forgot to mention that I followed this to install CWM:

I finally got a CWM system dump. I can put it as a .rar file but how can I upload it here?
Just upload to Multiupload or any other file hosting website.

TAR or ZIP is more accessible, but any filetype, just upload it to Multiupload. I'd hella appreciate it as well!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
yeah Im uploading it right now. This is the file you put in the root directory of your external SD card. once you boot into CWM you go into backup and restore->restore-> and it should be there.
Just unrar and copy the clockworkmod folder straight to the external SD root.
I must say tho the T-Mobile juggernaut custom rom is way better than the Telus Rom. yes it gets stuck on the 3G symbol but it is actually 4G speeds. So far the best I have is juggernaut with the stock t989d kernel in the dev section. best internet speeds and smooth as hell. quadrants are not great but who cares when the phone feels great fast and battery life is awesome.
right on id like to take a look at the telus rom
here you go guys enjoy. Hey Mr. X let me know if you find something juicy. i am glad to help
http://www.multiupload.com/MZZ3LEUXXT
PS. hey Mr X is there a way you can finish that t989d stock kernel we were talking about in a CWM .zip format. I will really appreciate it

Yah sorry i had forgotten about it.
Is there any possibility of this stock system dump being converted into a CWM flashable stock ROM? I'd like to try other ROMs, but AFAIK I can only restore the kernel to stock, not the entire ROM yet.
So if I root and flash my TELUS gs2x, will this take me back to stock rom via Odin?
Sent from my SGH-T989D using xda premium
Awesome! I flashed a 3rd party ROM without backing up the original, only to realize 4 ROMs later that I preferred the original ROM better than all of them... So I restored using your dump and flashed a jugs kernel over it and I'm quite happy with it so far.

Go here. Download the fus cgecker/Downloader. It allows you to check for latest firmware for any Samsung phone and download a system dump, even pull off your phone.

Hey everyone!
I'm new to the forums and I'm super excited. I've been wanting to root my SII for over half a year and I've finally built the courage to do so. I've looked through the forums and I found Melvin's post on how to root.
My question is, can I root my SII when its in version 4.0.4 UVLH1 using Melvin's method? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194)
Thanks!
Ken
Yes
I don't know from personal experience since I rooted with gingerbread but from reading I heard people having trouble with ics and melvins guide. Sooooo eliminate the doubt and just use this.

Its essentially the same thing. Flash CWM from Odin, then boot into CWM and flash superuser.
Something about superuser version...

Welcome to rooting.. so if im getting your question right you want to go to a new ROM possibly.. and youre on AOSP..well since you are new I would suggest using a one click odin (your choice ) and start from there since you are on A JB build ...
-TeaM VeNuM Like A Boss
+1 for one click of your choice, make sure you pick a full wipe one though.
Tappin' Typin'
I would flash over the EL26 CWM kernel, first it just makes it easier for you, and is a very safe recovery to flash from.
Thank you guys, actually I just wanted to know what to do when I decide to explore others roms but for now I really like this one so Ima stay here a while I didnt knew rooting would be this cool but new roms and with apps like setcpu this is very nice, thanks again.

Oh I see well all is your choice on the path..one major thing I suggest is when moving from ROM to ROM back up your apps ..(non system apps)and make sure to wipe on a safe recoveries (Kuban kernel, agats, el26) problems can arise from dirty installs
I also suggest ROM toolbox from the play store its a great tool that basically does everything

Is freegs3 touch wiz or AOSP?
-Sent from my GS3 running CM10.-
Its 4.0.4 touchwiz, OP search around and read before making your friends phone old and out dated with problems. And no the 2.3 rootkit is obsolete now a days, IMO. Just use Odin and read on the roms what's available and which has what features and let him/her decide.

If your friend likes the stock look I would recommend xquizit ROM by wild or frosty ROM by dj or infamous ROM by jamison and wicked by evil. Aosp look and feel I would recommend aokp or cm10. Its all on jellybean too.

use odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
follow instructions,
Install GooManager from the play store and install TWRP, yes it is that easy.
BACKUP IMEI Don't know what it is? Look it up! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804123
Once all done and rooted with a custom recovery (TWRP is my recommendation) flash a rom that has "UVDLJA" in the title, it's the latest available.
Roms:
Has great simple Looks and is my DD now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892746
My other choice but get's updated and messed with and sometimes things get broken when "goodies" are applied..

Last but not least

The other major one is good but gets updated way to often and things are constantly reported to be broken, for a crack flasher not the best for someone elses phone IMO

also, i cant seem to find an AOKP rom. i guess im missing that too by lack of reading...

If you can get into download or recovery you should be ok. Download any NOTE 2 <---! Rom and put it on your external SD Card. Just install it from TWRP/CWM from there. AOKP isn't out for our phone yet, and I haven't seen a stock version rom either.

Closest to KK is going to be Jedi or Clearom. Both are outstanding roms, with awesome support. Check them out in the development section.
