Can't install non-market apps - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just got my phone today and updated to 4.0.2. I had trouble installing Swype Installer (downloaded via browser) earlier but I was able to after a reboot. Now I'm trying to download Nova and it won't go, even after a couple of reboots.
The install screen comes up, I can expand the permissions menu, and click cancel, but clicking install gets absolutely no response. Also, unknown sources is checked in the security settings.
Any thoughts?

Hey, never heard of that before dude. Did you download the apk file for swype using your phone? Or did you download it and then copy it to your phone?
Maybe and this is just a shot in the dark try doing it one of the "other" ways above.
So if you downloaded it through your phone's browser try downloading on your computer and then transferring over. It is the only think I can think of that might work as I had an issue with an apk before similar to this and once I downloaded the file and copied it to the phone it worked fine.
Anyhow it's a long shot but thought I would say it Good luck.

If you have Screen Filter running then you should disable it before clicking Install. It is a known compatibility issue, otherwise just install it with adb:
adb install <path_to_apk>

Download unsucessful in browser

Brand new Gnex like everybody else.
Every time I try to download something from the browser I'm getting a download unsuccessful error, but if everywhere else downloads work.
For example if i'm in the xda forum app and somebody post a download that shows up in the app it goes straight through but if I have to click on a link and try to download it, it doesn't work.
Also if I pull up a picture in the browser and long press and save picture it doesn't work but i can set it as a wallpaper no problem.

This picture right here didn't work for me.
I'm still completely stock right now. haven't rooted or changed bootloader and running stock browser
I was playing around with my buddies nexus and found the same problem. A work around I found was to go into the Download app in the drawer, find your download, long press it until it gives you a retry option. Might take at least two tries but the file finally downloaded

Same problem here. My workaround is just to download on my PC, and use Dropbox to move it to my Gnex.

Yeah that's what I've been doing while at work in front of my computer, but that's not really a workaround since you can only do it when you are in front of a pc.
Any updates on this?
***SOLVED***
In settings, go to "Apps", select the "All" tab, go down and find "Download Manager", press the "Force Stop" button, then press the "Clear Data" button. Reboot and you can download again.
Download astro file manager. In prefs - enable browser downloads.

This didn't fix it for me and also you don't want that because that will make Astro the download manager. You want the stock one to work either way. Try my fix above first.
Also try
1. Clear cache for "Browser" in the Apps menu.
2. Clear cache and dalvik-cache in CWM and reboot.
3. If you have Astro already installed, try uninstalling it.
All else fails, repeating these 3 steps plus the fix I posted above in this order.
This worked thank you

This was happening to me and I tried everything I could think of to fix it including wiping data on market, uninstalling updates, factory reset phone, and wiping cache in download manager. I finally figured out that it would only fail when on wifi. Turning it off would let me download. I finally gave up trying to fix it. Funny thing is it works now though. I recommend just giving it a day. It may fix itself. It did for me.

I've had this problem before with stock browsers on phones. My solution is to use dolphin browser and set it to default.

I've countless threads and people recommended this or Opera mini. I don't consider any of these a solution. It's just a "workaround" since the original issue is not resolved. What I found was the solution. Highly recommend it. Especially considering how nice the stock browser on this phone is.

gTalk

hi guys,
is there a way to install gtalk with voice and video on my sgw?
nobody knows?
you can download "talk 1.3 installer [root]" in market...
Link...will try TKU
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.brainwashstudio.talkinstaller&hl=en
tried latest (recommended) and briso's 3rd mod.....
both FC'd,
app never ran,
the quest continues!!!
ive been looking for this myself but none of the current methods seem to work. Im hoping that samsung pull their fingers out and get it sorted.
I have gtalk with video working on my Galaxy W.
For sure I used the link provided above: talk installer 1.3
However, it could be I first removed the original system app using Titanium Backup
But it's working now...

i installed busybox and talk 1.3 but didn't work
can you tell me all the steps that you have done?
Didn't work for me.
I backed up and uninstalled the Talk app with TB, then ran the Talk 1.3 installer from the market, which failed (said something like "can't copy Talk.apk"). Then, to make matters worse, TB refused to reinstall the app from the backup - it just hung, even with the indirect option enabled (makes me wonder why I paid for it!).
I eventually got the talk app back by flashing the latest stock ROM (there just happened to be a new one available when I fired up Kies).
Edit: I just thought I'd try again using just the Talk 1.3 installer. However, it won't even backup the stock app - like with the attempted installation before, it says it cannot copy Talk.apk. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, since I'm not doing very much at all!
Edit2: I just checked in /system/bin and there is no "cp" symlink in there - perhaps that's the problem? (I rooted using the recovery method, which installed busybox, but it doesn't seem to have created the cp symlink...)
Edit3: I sorted the cp issue by installing a terminal emulator and running "busybox --install /system/xbin". Backing up with the Talk 1.3 Installer now works. I don't have a good data connection where I am at the moment though so I can't have another go and installing the modified Talk app until later.
Edit4: The installation of the modified Talk app now works, but it force closes whenever I try to start it. I've tried all the versions in the installer, and they all FC on startup. I could easily restore the original apk from the installer's backup though, so no damage done.
Confirmed [root] Talk 1.3 Installer works.
Requirements:
1) Rooted Phone
2) Titanium backup (root)
Steps:
1) Sign out from gTalk
2) Make backup of Talk app using Titanium
3) Wipe Data for Talk app using Titanium
4) Uninstall Talk app using Titanium
5) Download [root] Talk 1.3 Installer from Market
6) Run it .. it will ask you to backup .. Select No
7) It will ask again ... again Select No
8) Use recommended version and then let it install new Talk
9) After installing you will need to sign in again to your Google account.
10) Now you can use Talk with voice and video
Yay! The above method works. I can only assume it was force closing before because I didn't wipe the data from the old app.
The only problem I've found so far is that I don't seem to be able to start video chats with anyone - they have to "call" me. But that's not a huge issue.
Edit: I also seem to have an ongoing video chat notification that I can't get rid of, even after signing out. I have to force stop Talk to get rid of it. Annoying, but again, not a huge issue.
I went back to the stock version in the end. As far as I can tell, the modded version only works with video the first time you connect - if you want to start another video chat after you've ended the first one, you have to force close Talk and start it again. I think this may be connected to the fact that the ongoing video chat notification never disappears from the status bar.
Anyway, I've decided it's not worth the hassle - I've reinstalled the stock app and I'm just going to use Skype for video chat instead.

Help - Installer won't install apps

I'm stock rooted. A couple of days ago I started having problems installing apps. The app will download but the install button won't work. Its like I'm not pushing it. I can hit cancel and cancel the install but I can't install. I got around this problem by installing via my file explorer but today I tried updating my Swype Beta and it wouldn't install. I can't install it via ES file explorer. I don't know what to do. I can download it but the install button doesn't execute. I tried powering down. I tried clearing cache from Swype and Swype installer.
Thanks in advance.
Ok, I renamed the Swype updater app that downloaded to my phone. It showed as a .download and I made it .apk. I was then able to install it via ES file explorer. I updated Green Power Premium (battery saving app) recently. I thought that might be the culprit but I stopped it and froze Swype with Titanium and tried to reinstall it and still no dice. Install button still doesn't work.
Bring rooted may be holding you back. I would say go and root and then try it from there with something like Rom Toolbox.
I have a similar problem for ex. when I make a phone call and I get the automated voice to hit a number like 1 or 2 it doesn't respond, another one is like on gmail manual refresh button and sometimes when browsing. This doesn't happen all the time thou. I got mine getting checked out but I got a feeling that its going to get replaced because it happened while the doc. was checking it out.

Sorry, my brain isn't work today
Rom Toolbox works well with deodexed roms (not so much Odex). If you are into custom with a stock feel I cannot give more than enough props to Macksrom. If not use the Sextape 1 click back to stock Odin restore and re-do the root process from there. Unless you have a backup from when it was working.
I don't know if this helps but did you recently install an app like GMD S-Pen? I had that installed and it took me forever to figure out that the app was responsible for not letting me click the install button. I would try uninstalling recently installed apps to see if it works.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried uninstalling the last 7 apps I downloaded one at a time. I would uninstall one with Titanium backup then test to see if install button worked. It didn't work. I tried a 2nd app then test again and nothing. 3rd app uninstalled then test again. Still no luck getting install button to work. I gave up after uninstalling 7 apps. I know that the install button not working started happening recently (less than 7 apps ago).
Its bugging me that I can't figure it out. Like I said I can install apps after they download with ES file explorer but not with the native install button. Can I find the native installer in Applications Manager and clear defaults or something? Is so what's it called?
Okay, I finally found the problem. It WAS an app that I installed after all. After searching online I finally realized it was my screen filter. "Screen Filter" app dims the phone so you can read while in a dark room. It dims the phone even further than the darkest default dim setting.
There are several dimming applications out there and several auto brightness applications that can cause the same problem I had. I like the application so I will keep it but at least I know what's causing the problem now.

[Q] One Handed Operation - Screw Up

Hello All,
Been using XDA ever since my switch to Android, almost a year ago. For the most part I never had to write because all questions seem to be addressed with a bit of searching.
With that said, I just updated my Note 3 to KitKat using this amazing guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2672393, worked flawlessly - no hassles.
On to my problem. While on 4.3, I flashed a mod that changes the one-handed operation mode from blue to black. After playing with KitKat for no longer than 6 minutes, I got annoyed with the stock blue background, and in my infinite wisdom decided to flash the Mod to change it to black again.
To make a long story, it goes into one handed operation mode, it is black the way I like it (because I use this stupid function so damn much), but it doesn't respond properly at the upper and lower portions of the reduced size screen.
Any ideas on how to revert back to stock? Or better yet, is there a Mod that actually works with KitKat?
Thank you in advance!
edit: Sorry, just realized this was posted to the wrong forum.
factory reset
Factory reset won't help, here's Easy one hand taken from XNote. I believe that it'll work.
Just push it into the system with the correct permissions.

I'm guessing that your rooted. Uninstall the Easyonehand.apk using titanium backup then use a root explorer and copy the file into system -> app then change the permissions then reboot.

[Q] reboot manager

Hi all, I am certain others are having this problem, but I couldn't find any threads about it.
Does anyone know how to get a reboot widget to work? I used to keep Quick Reboot on my home screen just to have easy access to recovery and other stuff. Since the Lollipop update, none of the reboot managers on the play store work.
Anyone know of a work around or alternative?
Is your phone rooted, from what i understand the app you're referring to or any like it requires it. If you are rooted most any custom rom will have the boot menu your looking for just not as a widget.
Holo Reboot works for me on OB7.

Dang, it doesn't work for me. It asks for root privileges and I grant them, then says your phone will reboot....but never does. It behaves the same way all reboot managers do, just bombs out.
It has been like this on every ROM I've used (Noterized, Alliance), including stock. WTF?? Are you certain it is rebooting your Note when you ask it to?
Even apps Like Synapse that came with my ROM cannot reboot. The Xposed module reboot function fails too. Like I said, it isn't specific to this ROM, it has always been like this for me on the NOTE 4.

I was using it with rooted OB7 stock using beta 2.49 SuperSU apk. Just flashed a custom ROM that uses 2.46 and does just as you say.
Try the beta 2.49. It was made for the lollipop kernel enforcing vs permissive mode issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55256620&postcount=1 Shouldn't be beta, IMO.
Edit: that didn't fix it on custom ROM for me either. I'll look deeper into this.

I have found that applications that issue a reboot command(like xposed), also fail to result in a reboot. However, interestingly enough, I just noticed that the reboot command from within Titanium works (it is inside the menu list).
Sometimes I notice when I try to reboot with a app, a toast message comes on a says "Reboot:Null" or "that function doesn't exist (or something like that)" as if that command functionality doesn't exist on the Note 4. I know it isn't a Lollipop issue, because my wife's G2 has Lollipop and Quickboot works flawlessly.
When Titanium successfully rebooted, it flashed a toast message (the first time). I didn't have a chance to read it all, it was long. But it seems to be using another method to initiate a reboot. Dunno, I am stumped.

I got some ideas just slow going setting up a fresh ROM. For stock, I had a highly customized setup, look and feel but everyone's preferences are not alike so I can't complain. Even with Titanium and TWRP tar to pull from, I had system customized too. I've got apps and lib folder to edit; some to copy over and some to delete. Keyboards have got to go; back to custom Swype with top number row and directional left right arrows. There's always the nandroid to restore but I'll try to set this up for a backup.
I'll chime in if I figure it out. Maybe just a matter of time. Not out of ideas yet. If someone has a solution, chime in.
