I want to root a 'new' (as in freshly replaced refurbished) Epic4G running the EL30 software update. I managed to do this successfully with the EI22 update. I want the best ROM. On EI22 I used "CleanG3" and I'm sure the rooting technique and ROM to use have advanced some. Anyone care to share?
Nope same process flash the gb3a.tar kernel and flash clockwork mod and flash a new rom.. or flash a su.zip

Ok so it's just a reviison (+.1) not a major release. In that case, I read there are issues, such as an issue with the GPS. Will the update work flawlessly with any patches?
Fastest way to install a custom rom coming off stock....
odin cwm recovery, make sure auto-reboot is NOT selected. (this will make sure your phone will not boot up when the process is complete. Your new recovery will not save if this happens.)
when the process is complete, pull your battery, put the battery back in, boot your phone into recovery mode (volume down, power key, camera key, all same time)
install your rom with a rooted kernel, your ready to go.
If you are only trying to root your stock ROM, you will need to complete the steps posted in reply #1.

I'm sorry, Im confused. I have been searching and I have read 3 seemingly contradictory facts:
- NEVER flash CM9 with any other recovery other than clockwork mod
- NEVER use odin to flash clockwork mod on an ICS rom
- You can flash a newer version of CM9 over the old one
So i'm using CM9 RC0 and I would like to update to alpha2 without wiping. CWM disappeared when i flashed and I keep reading that its dangerous to use the stock rouge recovery. So I went to go use odin to get CWM back on but there is a warning to never try to load it using an ICS rom?
Where am I going wrong here? I really dont want to wipe and flash to a GB rom just so that I can use odin to get CWM and flash back to cm9.
Thanks, I just wanted to make sure i didn't ruin my phone!

What you want to do is flash the EL26 kernel with CWM through Odin. Once it's flashed and the phone starts to reboot, pull the battery. Put the battery back in, boot into recovery via Vol up+ power and then flash Alpha 2 over RC0, flash GApps and reboot. You should be good to go then.

Flashing roms on Epic4gtouch is so complicated. I remember when I had my HTC hero. All you gotta do is download the rom, put it in your sdcard, open rom manager then flash xD

This is a recent thing that started when the ICS leaks started coming. Before ICS, rooting and flashing this phone was as easy as any. It still is actually, but you have to be more careful, especially with any of the AOSP ROMs. It should be back to normal once the official ICS update is released and we get our hands on the source code.

Worked perfectly! Hopefully you have helped many noobs down the road when they search for this. What threw me off was QBKings video when he kept warning to never flash EL26 on ICS. (Mad respect though, QBKing!). Thanks for clearing that up for me!
On a side note, yeah, things seem complicated. I know there is a good reason why CM9 doesn't include a good recovery but I hope as things develop we will eventually get back to the "Rom Manager" days. Man, our devs spoil us!
Want to root wife's epic and keep stock rom & kernel. Is there a way to do this w/o installing cwm? Is it possible to root but be able to do a factory reset and all will go back to unrooted if the phone needs to go back to the store... or would I have to Odin the stock back in (and nothing else).
Sent from my Evo (MikG3/Lionfish)
No it is not. Only a custom kernel will allow you to keep root and CWM. There is a very stock like FC09 ROM that even has instructions on how to get back the Sprint bootanimation. The only thing you would have to remove is Superuser.
Here is the ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580931&highlight=fc09+stock+deodexed
Qbking77 even has a video on How to root samsung epic on FC09 on youtube.
Perhaps a little re-wording. I'm okay with custom kernel rooted rom but don't want a custom recovery rom like cwm.. If possible I want to get it rooted button be able to use stock recovery and tell it to do a factory reset and it'll wipe out kernel and rom back to unrooted stock so I don't have to Odin the stock back on if it needs to go in (ie if usb port goes out).
Since its the wife's I wanted to make it easier to go back to stock. For my Evo I've had no personal issues with using custom recovery and full mods/roms) and prefer it.
If I have to go full cwm can you suggest a rom/kernel combo? She's happy with stock look & feel.. Just want to be able to have root and remove bloat.. But keep the sprint app for paying the bill and sprint tv.

Factory reset does not wipe kernel. You will need to Odin no matter what or keep the kernel. Factory reset does not remove root either since su is in the system directory. So what I recommended is the closest with instructions on how to restore stock recovery. You can google How to root the Samsung Epic on EL30 youtube video by qbking77 and you will get root and custom kernel without CWM. But like I said without Odin you will be have that kernel and su. You will be able to delete su with root explorer though.

I may ask earthbound if he will make a one-click root... seeing how all you have to do is make it flash recovery, flash su, remove the recoveryboot.sh (or whatever) and then its done. That way people wont have to use odin that or if i could figure out how to make one that would be cool.

Aghast, not another wife's phone ...
I always chime into situations like this to say- the only wife-friendly phone is a stock phone. (Unless she is actually here herself, rooting her own phone and installing her own ROM or kernel.)

The one click root methods stopped working because the exploit was blocked on GB. He would have to develop a new way to get adb to install all those files in their right places.

If I'm understanding you correctly you want root, stock, no cwm.... well with these new builds of gingerbread it should be possible because of the overwrite script for the recovery... odin in cwm without auto reboot checked... pull battery, boot into cwm immediately, flash the su.zip found on qbking77 how to root and then boot... you "should" have root now, with no custom kernel or rom, and the script should have overwrote cwm, exactly what you wanted...

I don't understand this sentiment. my wife loves CM7 and understands if something don't work she lets me know and I will fix it when I have a chance. It is just like her compute I fix that all the time too.
I just upgraded my E4GT Sprint from GB to ICS using the oneclick installer. I am trying to install the CODENAME rom from CWM but havng issues getting CWM installed. I used the the E4GT auto but FE16 isnt listed so i tried FE15 but it wont load into CWM. So i tried this link "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390393" and flashed from ODIN and it goes into CWM but before it boots it says my phone is a gt-i9100 and has a ! on the bottom. It appears to boot though so i booted back into CWM and tried to flash the ZIP for CODENAME and the gapps file and it jsut gets stuck at the boot screen with the transformer logo. I cant get into CWM after that point and have to ODIN back to ICS. I am on ICS now and its working fine. Does anyone have any instructions on getting CWM installed and the codename rom from a fresh odin ICS install?

You really should read more before hopping around like that without checking. Real risk for a brick here.
-Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel via the PDA option in ODIN/Mobile ODIN
-When phone begins reboot, Hold Power + Volume up until boots into recovery.
-Wipe data/factory, cache and dalvik cache
-Flash ROM
-Flash Gapps
-Reboot
Those are the instructions right from the developer's thread. This is an AOSP rom and it sounds like you're trying to install TW kernels.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
This is the kernel repository. It links to each kernel where you can read further and find out if they are safe for flashing things.
Seems like you've done a bunch of stuff. But you really should do a whole bunch of reading first or you will brick your phone.
My suggestion would be to use sfhub's one-click http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705730 to get to a fully stock rooted device. Then use his autoroot package http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728 to add CWM (the lates in the package is FF11+CWM Agat I believe) then you can add Agat's latest kernel with CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721065
But I would be very careful when flashing ANY ROM; use the developers prefered method. Some recommend using EL26 CWM. Some a different recovery or procedure. Be especially careful with CM9 and AOKP builds to follow the directions there.
Good luck
So while i was waiting for a response i just went back to the stock GB using the one click install. I then used the autoroot package to install CWM and then restored my nandroid backup before i made in the very beginning. So my phone is back to a perfect state with GB and CWM installed. Can i just flash the ROM from CWM as is then? For some reason i thought it had to be "converted" to ICS and thats what started this whole mess. Things have changed since my old Evo
I just noticed that im running EL29 not 26...does that matter? When i try to flash that CMW EL26 stock root is when it gave me that gt-i9100 on boot and the ! at the bottom. Using the autoroot and choosing the EL29 Rogue is the only way i got it installed.

My friend some good suggestions above your post. Give yourself a day or two and do some reading prior to flashing. This way you may not end up at Sprint making up stories about why your phone wont boot up.
Let me just echo what everybody else has said, you're gotta read more. A lot more! If you're one goal is to get CNA in your phone I would recommend reading all of the very first post on that thread. They give step by step instructions.
If you need CWM there are several options to get it on your phone. Both sfhub and I have put together several one-click and automated options to get it on your phone.
One thing that hasn't been suggested yet but I would strongly encourage you to do is to read the "How Not To Brick Your E4GT" thread. It's sticked in the General section.
Good luck!
Two more things.
1) If you're going to ask for help give it a few minutes before trying something new. It takes people a minute to reply. Sometimes waiting that extra minute or two is all you need to be saved from bricking.
2) Don't be afraid to hit your thanks button for everyone who has offered advice already. I got them once for you but it might not hurt to do it again.
Howto: Flash back to GB after ICS Update on the Captivate Glide
Needed Files:
Clockworkmod Recovery (CWMR): ---TOUCH--- or ---NON-TOUCH---
Odin: ---DOWNLOAD HERE---
CWMR Flashable GB Rom: ---INCEPTION ROM---
Samsung Stock Rom: ---I927UCKL1--- or ---I927UCKI3---
NOTE: If you just want to go back to GB and are happy with just the Inception rom, only download cwmr, odin, and the inception rom, otherwise, download all files.
INSTALL CWMR
first you will need to install CWMR onto your phone. to do this you need to connect your phone into download mode (power on + hold volume up, and follow prompts) via usb, start up odin, make sure only reboot is checked (uncheck F. Reset Time) and click PDA. select the unzipped cwmr (.md5 file) file you downloaded and then click start.
Congratulations, your phone now has clockwork mod recovery installed!!!
INSTALL INCEPTION ROM
the next step in the downgrade process is to install the inception rom. to do this, copy over the inception rom zip you your phones internal memory (not the external microsd) and boot into recovery (power on + hold volume down). as a precaution make a backup then do a wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, go to mounts and storage and format system (for good measure). then go back to the main menu, then install zip from sdcard, then find the zip you put on your sdcard. scroll down to yes and let the magic happen.
Congratulations, you now have the inception rom installed on your phone.
Now you can stop here, but if you want to go back to pure stock so that you can get the OTA/KIES updates again go on to the next step.
INSTALL STOCK ROM
the final and optional step is to install the stock rom back onto the phone. to do this put your phone back into download mode, fire up odin, make sure only reboot is checked. then select PDA and select the stock firmware (unzipped), this will be a .md5 file. click start in odin, and let it do its thing. it will wipe and load the stock rom back on your phone and you will be back to pure ATT stock rom goodness...
Hope this helps those out that are having trouble going to back to gingerbread

whats the difference between:
I927UCKL1 and I927UCKI3 ?
I put on I927UCKI3 and send the phone to my mom, when she put in her SIM card the voice and text work fine, but she is not seeing data.
Is this the software or maybe she needs a new SIM card or hopefully the phone isnt busted. Any ideas?
I927UCKI3 = 2.3.5
I927UCKL1 = 2.3.6
is you mother on AT&T? if not, you would have to enter the correct APN info...
I see, thanks for that!
I sent her into the ATT store and all they had to do was "turn on" the 3G for her and everything is fine now. She doesn't know the first thing about gingerbread or ICS so I just wanted to get her off the problematic ICS build and back onto gingerbread where she can do her simple emailing and web browsing. Should I upgrade her to 2.3.6 or do you think 2.3.5 is perfectly fine and stable for "non-power users"? Thanks again for all the help!

the main reason to have 2.3.6 is if you want to have video chat with google talk or google+ hangouts. 2.3.5 doesnt let you from what i remember.
thanks a lot for this downgrade guide, didn't know downgrading needs GB kernel..
But does anybody know where we can get "real" stock rom? Mine is i927R unlocked. I downloaded GB stock from sammobile but it turns out to be rooted & has some Rogers apps preinstalled. Same thing I got with AT&T version.
Before upgrading to ICS, my stock was really clean, well just Rogers logo at start up, but the rest is just standard samsung's android thing..
Is this some kind of differences between locked & unlocked i927R?
Unlocked Captivate Glide ICS
if i am unloked i can still do this?? or my phone will be locked again?
I did this exactly, but when trying to flash back to stock, my phone still fails when trying to mount /preload (trying to update application)
Same here. I used inception rom couple of days, after that i tried downgrade to stock and it fails when trying to mount /preload (trying to update application). How to resolve it?
Sorry to bump an old thread, but whats the difference between the Inception ROM and the stock 2.3.6 ROM? I had 2.3.6 for about a year and I loved it before someone broke my phone. I bought a new Glide but it came with 4.0.4, and I hate it more every day. I'd like to downgrade but I'm concerned with the guys above me who said they had problems loading the stock 2.3.6 ROM. What are the main differences in case it doesnt work, or is there a way to fix it?
Please, any help would be appreciated. Much thanks

Yes. You can use any CWM flashable rom to revert back to GB and then fash Odin to get to stock. If you don't, you will hang at the boot screen.
Kudos for searching!
If you have issues getting your hands on a GB rom sent me a PM i can google drive it to you.

CWMR Flashable GB Rom: ---INCEPTION ROM---
Hey, does anyone have the inc3ption_v1.zip file?
The links in the op are dead.if you have the file could you upload it somewhere?
I've been out of the rooting game for about two months now. I'm a little rusty and I finally got my epic 4g touch back from sprint. I just rooted it using the FH13 auto root method so it now has super user. I have not installed anything additional on top of it, ONLY just rooted it. I'd like to jump on a JB rom (thinking CNA or paranoidAOKP).
In order to do so I was going to use the odin and an el26 pda file I've had for a while now to jump to el26 recovery and then flash JB.
Can someone confirm if this is safe? I've already been on JB roms for the months prior breaking my phone, and I've done the method a hundred times. Just trying to be careful so I don't immediately brick my phone. 99.9% positive this is the safe way. If I'm missing a step please correct me I don't need to manually install CWM on top of rooting it correct? Just root, then odin el26, then flash?
Yes for a clean flash first copy your jb rom, gapps and other files to your external sd card. Next verify md5, update prl and profile, then get a gps lock and reboot in download mode. Flash the safe el26 recovery kernel via Odin (PC) PDA slot. Immediately reboot to el26 recovery then do factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik. Flash ROM, flash gapps, reboot to system. Enjoy
Thanks everything went well as expected. Appreciate the reply.
