[Q] Always boots to fastboot? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had CM7, S-OFF, CM7 r2 HBOOT I was at home, didn't touch pfone all night, and in the morning, after a call, back key stoped working. I tryed to restart phone, and it went to fastboot. I figured back button was stuck and i pushed back button so it maybe start working, but it didn't. It would always boot to fastboot, and volume keys are not working.
So, i disasembled the phone, took the buttons board out, and it still booted to fastboot.
Then i managed to turn the phone on, via CMD, using command fastboot reboot, and from menu, i rebooted to recovery, made backup and flashed CM7 again.
That didn't work.
In recovery, i tryed key test, back and search button were not working.
I returned everything to stock, still nothing.
I can only start the phone via fastboot reboot...
Help please...

Certainly sounds like back button is stuck down. Did you void your warranty by taking it apart or was it already void?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

No i don't have a warranty...
But i don't understand, if it is stuck, why does it start in fastboot, when i remove the button board...

It's stuck somewhere. To get to fastboot you have to hold back and press power...
Has the phone been wet recently?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

Maybe from tho cold, or moisture...Because of very low temps here, there was a lot of snow, and the phone was in the room with moisture...?

Wouldn't expect that to be enough. Maybe prudent to get a phone shop to look over it...
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

That is my last solution...

try
Code:
fastboot oem boot
worked for me while holding back
if you don't have fastboot setup then unzip the file into c:\ and use the following
Code:
cd\
fastboot oem boot

What can i manage with that command?
I have fastboot, and with that command, i can start the phone, but i can do it also with fastboot reboot.
And when i restart the phone it goes to do fastboot, volume keys are not working...

Exactly.. you can turn on the phone, I thought this was your ultimate goal to do, doesn't fix anything.. just telling you that you can get it started that way.
Have you tried putting it in a bag of rice yet? if it is water damage it might help.

No, i haven't tried that. I put it on radiator, that's not very worm, and it's working, but it's not ok.
It can turn on normaly, but sometimes it's like, back button is pressed continuously and sometimes same thing happen with search button...

Alrighty, so I dropped my phone in water 2 weeks ago, immediately took out the battery, riced it for 2 1/2 days, and used it. It was working perfectly except for the volume rocker was working only for pressing it down. Now today, I wake up, go to school, and while walking my screen won't go on, it'll just act like the backlight is on but the led for the buttons on the bottom will come up. I pulled the battery, then restarted it, screen worked, but once I locked the screen, the screen stayed black. I get home, plug it in, and put into cmd "adb devices" and it pops up. So I try "adb reboot recovery" to just wipe and reflash hoping that'd fix stuff, but it hangs on "adb reboot recovery". The CMD doesn't move an inch, and I am not put into recovery. I am S-OFF via Revolutionary, and no HTC Dev unlock crap. If anyone could help me, I'd love you. I'm due for an upgrade with Verizon June 2014 and can not be without my phone due to business reasons. Also, any suggestions on phones to get when I get my upgrade? :good:

When I do that it basically is saying that fastboot isn't there. I typed just adb fastboot and it did nothing. I did adb fastboot reboot recovery and still nothing..
*EDIT*
I ran fastboot reboot-bootloader so I could get into recovery like that and it hangs on "< Waiting for device >"

When I power and vol down, it turns onto the HTC screen, then it turns off. Then once I let go of the keys it just regularly attempts to boot it.
I honestly wish I knew what was wrong with my phone. I've been missing phone calls and whatnot due to this error. I hope this can be fixed!

Desire HD boot problem and can't reboot

Hi guys
I've got a desire Hd, over 2 years old now so out of warranty. Not rooted, Android 2.3.5 (official ROM), Middle East ROM and relocked.
When i turn it on,After a minute or less, when it would normally show an android screen, the screen goes to bootloader. and when I wanna reboot it or enter to the recovery , the screen goes blank but the phone is still on, and the screen is still on but in a very dark grey. if you hold it on an angle the backlight appears to be on. But from that point nothing happens, the buttons no longer respond, and I have to remove the battery to turn it off.
Although I've tried to reset factory my phone but it didn't work and the screen goes blank again when the backlight is still on.
Thanks for your help.
PLease help me asap.
did u ever experience this problem?

nothing much. I've just removed the battery many times, because the Volume down didn't respond and I wanted to enter to the bootloader!!
any solution?!! :crying:
try this:
What happens after putting battery back whitout pressing the ON-Button?
If it's still off, try pressing once ON-Button AFTER holding Volume-UP till HBOOT comes... maybe your phone need that
OR:
Connect the phone (when its off) to PC. Then turn phone on. Flash the boot.img over PC with fastboot.exe (only boot.img, not hole ROM). I had the same troubles with every ROM i tried, i had to flash it manually.

Does it needs any RUU to do this or the boot.img is already exist in my phone?! (my phone is S-ON and relocked)
and what's the exact command to flash boot.img not the whole ROM?

Once you're in the bootloader, and assuming your computer has the correct drivers and img files, type in CMD:
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
I think I'm in a worse condition than you. My phone won't even boot into bootloader, have tried all the hardware keys (Vol+-, Home, Back, Menu) with Power button. I have even tried taking the volume cable out and pressing the buttons directly but my phone still goes into the boot animation and then blank screen with backlight on. My computer is also not recognizing the phone so adb doesn't work. I'm out of ideas, anyone got any?

I did it but unfortunately I faced with this Failure:
Code:
C:\Android>fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending 'boot' (2840 KB)... OKAY
writing 'boot'... INFOsignature checkin
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
what should I do then?? :crying:
and about your problem i think the Volume Key is the problem and it can be fix by replacing the volume key or even with a simple cleaning. don't worry

[Q] I can't access Bootloader or Recovery PLEASE Help!

My HTC One M8 (Verizon) is seemingly bricked. My phone is rooted, S-Off, with the stock ROM. I have been trying to update to the latest OTA update by returning to stock. I had previously modified some entries in the Build.prop and Platform.xml. I knew those had to be default in order for the OTA to work. I had copied the original files and pasted them to my SD Card so that I could simply cut the modified versions, paste them to my SD Card, and cut the originals from my SD Card and put them in their corresponding system folders.
Upon a reboot something apparently went horribly wrong because all my phone does now is boot with the white screen and green HTC Logo, then the screen goes black. I have tried the typical Power Button + Volume Down but it won't enter the boot loader. The good news is that the USB port seems to still work for my windows computer recognizes a device connecting to it but it doesn't show up as an interactive device in windows explorer..if that makes sense.
Please Help!

When you connect it to the PC can you pick up the device with adb? If so, have you tried to run the command from adb to boot it into bootloader? adb devices ... if found, adb reboot bootloader

I'm not too familiar with ADB commands but I typed in "adb reboot recovery" and it said: "error: device not found" so even if my command was wrong it's still not detecting it. I also tried: "fastboot reboot bootloader" and it just says "waiting for device"
Also I feel like it's worth mentioning the phone is automatically rebooting every two minutes or so (haven't timed it exactly but it's a while). Still showing the green HTC Logo then the screen goes dim, then the screen turns off.

Try holding volume UP + Power button, this simulates a "battery pull", just hold it in for a while it can take a while to "pull", when it's off try again booting into bootloader, volume DOWN + Power button.

I held Volume Up + Power Button and it showed the white screen with the green HTC logo. I then released all buttons. Once the screen turned off I then held Volume Down + Power Button for two minutes straight and nothing happened.
Even though we haven't found a solution yet, I am appreciative of the help.
sounds like you never installed the htc drivers for your phone, hence your pc doesn't see the phone when you are doing ADB commands.
install the drivers for it, then try the ADB commands via your pc
and dont mess with the build prop or other system files unless you have a working back up and are 101% certain about what you are doing..
Just remember to change directory in command prompt to the folder where adb.exe is located.
I don't know why the device doesn't reboot into bootloader though when you hold volume down + power button, shouldn't have to hold it for 2minutes. Holding volume up + power button to simulate a "pull" should only take up to 20 seconds or so at most and pressing volume down + power will then immediately take you into bootloader mode, or at least it's supposed to.
Did you release the volume up / power combo when the screen went dead or before? Try holding it until the phone shuts off and then right away press volume down + power.
Sorry if I'm not answering right away though, busy eating, and will be here and away for the next hour or so while I get ready for work =o( once I leave for work I'll only be able to help some more after like 2 hours or so. Hopefully we can do something before then though =o)

You're right, I didn't install the drivers. I did so and ADB was able to recognize it and I was able to access the bootloader. Thank you everyone for your help. I won't be making the mistake again.

So you'll be able to fix it from here on then? I was just about to link this thread to you as well should you have gotten adb to work again, it's for the RUU for Verizon seeing as you said you're on Verizon.
But going by your response up there you might already know how to fix this issue further :good:

Share another method of getting into recovery mode on non-responsive blank screen
Hi,
I just want to share how I accessed recovery mode with the same build.prop issue but with S-ON (might work with S-Off too).
I found the solution from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc...ter-download-mode-t2853100/page2#post62490577
To get into recovery mode on a non-responsive blank screen, hold the power button and volume up button at the same time and then approximately after 10 seconds, switch from pressing the volume up to volume down button before the HTC logo white screen shows while still holding down the power button. After, a white boot screen will give an option to go into recovery mode.

[Q] HTC Desire bricked, Vol Down button broken

I have this HTC Desire I'm trying to get back to work. I bricked it about a year ago but I'd like to use it as a spare phone.
When I try to boot the phone, nothing happens. When I boot while charging, the orange led goes out for a few seconds, so the power button press is registered. However, the screen just stays black.
I've been reading methods for flashing recovery using fastboot, but booting into fastboot requires to press the Vol. Down key, which is no longer working on the device.
Is there any way to fix this phone? I'm on a Linux machine and have Android SDK tools installed, however, I have little experience with flashing software (read: I only did it by copy-pasting pre-made commands).
Many thanks in advance!

Turn the phone on and keep pressing back and it should take you to the fastboot and u can navigate out of that to bootloader to recovery.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Free mobile app
Completely power down the phone
Then use 'back + power' buttons will take you straight to fastboot
Then flash 4EXT recovery using fastboot commands, backup and partition you sd card, full wipe flash ROM
You can still navigate within fastboot and bootloader using only the volume up button if you need to

How to Get out of Download Mode

EDIT 2:
I swear I have no luck sometimes. What should be a simple unlock I now get this...
I put in the key per HTC Dev and went to flash the unlock_code.bin file and I get this on the PC and this on the device...now what? Just look at the two photos. What do I do here? Phone isn't responsive to anything on the physical device. The 3/3 becomes 4/4 if I try and send it again.
I tried fastboot oem boot (command error) and adb reboot (I get error device not found)
So I just went into download mode (long press power and volume down). It loaded up fine. I hit the power button to select view system info and the screen went black. Phone is a paperweight right now. Phone is 100% stock nothing done to it yet. USA 1.21. If I long press power and volume down again I just get the back & recent buttons to flash until I release the buttons.
Tell me it's something stupid I'm missing.
EDIT: Well I let the phone sit for 10 minutes or so it seems to want to power back on. WTF?

no I wasn't trying anything wasn't even plugged into a computer. I was just testing out to see how to get into that mode (figured universally it was PWR+VOL DN) but then I got the black screen of death.

Usually holding down both volume buttons for 10 second plus does the job if you are still having problems.

You likely entered the info mode which is a black display. Fastboot does respond in this mode so the aforementioned fastboot reboot-boot loader etc does work.

Probably volume up and power long enough to reboot it.

Well I panicked and then figured it out.
fastboot reboot
reboot phone back to download mode...reacquired the token key with a different generated key (weird?) and then it unlocked. Phones are weird sometimes...
