I have tested several time on my Galaxy Nexus, it doesn't enable the noise cancellation during calls.
My friend can easily know I am on train with the noise they heard.
However, I am doubting if it is rom related, can someone share your experience?
Boy I can't wait for VoLTE for this.
I question this too. I get complaints when calling from the freeway.
But i can confirm both mics work using tape recorder pro and testing each mic separately. The rear mic almost sounds better than the front.

On Galaxy Nexus the noise cancellation I never see it work at all. On my Old Nexus One The noise cancellation was working great. I don't think the noise cancellation is working at all on Galaxy Nexus.
Noise cancellation is disabled during phone calls. That was already known. It's mainly for video recording.
Also, having both mics sending data over 3G/2G is too much, but we won't get VoLTE as we only have one lte radio.

Thats not how noise cancellation works. There is no sending 2 mic data anywhere. Besides, tons of existing phones already have 2 mics with noise cancellation, nexus one, atrix, iphone, and they all work great and dont send 2 sets of data anywhere. It all happens on the phone. Sigh.

After watching this demo, and then realizing that this tech is in every other Samsung phone except the Galaxy Nexus, it makes me wonder what else Samsung skimped on in addition to the low-res camera and now non-existent voice cancellation during phone calls... Someone explain why we paid so much for this phone?

Low-res camera? Dude this camera is great! If people honestly are going to freak out about MEGAPIXELZZZZZZZ then they need to do some serious research. Megapixels do not make the camera, they just tell you how big you can blow it up. And last time I checked most people aren't editing photos or sharing photos on a 100" screen, so there isn't a need for anything beyond 8. 5 is perfectly sufficient as well. I heard a phone at MWC yesterday was going to be released with a 41MP camera. That is outrageously stupid but people will buy it just because there is a bigger number than before. Just like exhaust on a car. 5 inch exhaust!?!!? OMFG I'm sure that has to give me like 100 horsepowers!!!!

You are missing the point. We bought the most expensive phone on the market and thought we were getting the "best" phone, but Samsung skimped on features. Yes, the camera is acceptable, but 5mp is 2010 technology... No noise cancellation on a high-end smartphone is just wrong.

Unfortunately, the hardware is NOT there... It's a special chip we are missing. Sure, they could add software noise cancellation and use the two mics, but it would be vastly inferior to something like the earsmart technology, which was on older nexus devices.

So the guy can't even MENTION that the technology isn't there without someone implying he is a complainer?
I like the GN, but I am disappointed with the lack of some high-end features.
Question: is it Samsung's influence so the GN wouldn't take away too many GSII sales, or was it Google's decision to build the phone to a price point to keep margins high?

Ah damn ok, so it was a cost issue likely samsung trying to save on BOM. Now i see why people complain when i'm on the freeway calls.

5MP equals out to a resolution of 2984 x 1680 (Compared to 3768 x 2120 for a 8MP camera). Find me why it would be necessary to have a higher resolution camera? Also, this camera has a faster shutter speed than most newer phones.
Oh, and if you are doing major photo editing with a phone camera... you're doing it wrong.

i so love my GNEX i sold my 4S because its a lot better.. but when it comes to volume i cant accept the fact that its very weak and considering its a google flagship device, i dont know if google or samsung decided on this kind of speaker..im thinking of samsung put a crap speaker so it will not be competitive againts the next SGS3..in comparison with the 4s it its no where near, 4s is two time louder and has the best speaker in all mobile..thats the only short coming i have on this device, all in all its still the best smartphone around now..

it's true the speaker isn't as loud but it's not the worst either. If you've ever had an htc device you'd see that Sammy is the middle ground. at the end of the day, there are so many benefits to this phone that the few drawbacks aren't dealbreaksrs. just a matter of getting used to the fact that the speaker is satisfactory instead of unusually loud

I agree, the volume on this device sucks. The speaker is really weak. However don't lose hope, there are programs you can use to vastly improve it, for one... Volume+. It's in the market.
As for the 4s having "the best speaker in all mobile"... you may want to look into a little company called RIM. As the 4S is not even half as loud as any blackberry that I've come across. They are second to none in this department. This is a particular pet peeve of mine. Barring Rim, it seems like every smart phone manufacturer out there has totally forgotten that these things are "supposed" to be cell phones FIRST. They keep pushing the limits of screens, cameras, cpus, yet they all keep forgetting about basic things like call quality & battery life. Things that "should be important", for a mobile phone. And unfortunately, the vast majority of the public is to blame for this... With their stupid megapixel & benchmark penis envy. Very frustrating to me...

I miss Nokia when they always put a pair of stereo speakers on their phones.
I like how my mom's optimus one had the loudspeaker and earpiece as one. When you play videos the sound is directed towards you instead of coming out from the back of the device.

Buy the volume+, not the free one (free goes up to volume 4).In settings of the volume+ select for speaker volume 6 or 7.You ll see the difference.You can also do it for headphones

oh yes RIM has good sound on their speaker too i used bb9900 before, iphone 4s is 2x louder than the ip4.. i think gnex has the same speaker as the SGS2, im thinking that this is only because of ICS..

Volume+ definitely increases the volume properly... I have mine at +8 and it's night and day compared to how it was at stock - I was seriously considering returning the phone as I simply couldn't hear the notifications and ringer unless it was in a quiet room.
And you can get the full version of Volume+, free from the author's site - http://androidaudiohacks.com/?page_id=2 so it's worth a try anyway!

There is no denying it. The speaker on the Galaxy Nexus SUCKS.....
So I downloaded Volume+ Free version.
The +4 setting is great. Everything is loud enough now.
My concern is, can this damage or blow the speaker over time ???

They're not bugs. Samsung has notoriously horrible speakers on all their phones.
Every single Captivate, Infuse, S2, etc. that I've seen (2-3 of each) have had the same horrible speaker volume.

That's for headphone volume so people can't be sued if you bust your eardrums. It's an EU law (european union) not UK only.

The app exploits the equalizer API to raise the volume by raising levels on each frequency higher. It is NOT a factory software setting.

If your speaker is distorting then it is being damaged. The degree of damage obviously will vary from speaker to speaker and by how much it's distorting. Saying that though, the odds of it blowing your speaker are negligible (not impossible though, read the disclaimer ). Your speaker may die over time but you're much more likely to have a new phone by then. I abused my t-mobile G1 with audio mods and that still works fine!
I currently have an LG Optimus 2x and run it on +15 permanently (which distorts horribly) and have done since the phone was released and it's still working fine. I've had it much louder when testing too.
So yeah, I certainly wouldn't recommend running it on +15 all the time, but you should be absolutely fine on +4

I thought the rezound had good volume but when I got my Nexus I find it about the same. The Nexus is much louder then my G2x or Nexus One. Media volume I have to turn it down often.
I don't see it on my Verizon version. Do you think the GSM versions are lowered? My coworker has a G2 and said the speaker was loud...

Did someone managed to record in laud environment like concerts? How does it behave? I can't believe no one is interested in this. I also want to know how SGS3 behaves. I am asking this because only some devices can use voodoo sounds that can handle loud environments. Both SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus behaves like crap when recording even at a party (because of the samsung's audio chipset that is crap ). What do you guys think? Isn't a feature worth mentioning even in reviews like the ones GSM arena is having? I was so disappointed after I sold my Iphone4 to get SGS2 and done some sound tests. Thank you!

Thinking about ordering Galaxy Nexus from the play store, but I want to know if there are any major issues with the Nexus from the play store.
1) Sound issues/Call quality?
2) Bluetooth issues?
3) Speakerphone issues, low volume?
4) Headphone issues?
5) Any strange noises?
6) Any other possible issues that I should know about before I purchase?
7) Horrible battery life?

It's all awesome...everything is made to perfection considering it's Google's first phone to run Android 4.0
The only thing is, if you don't run the right kernel your battery can suffer. But you can get double the battery off Amazon for around $10, so it's not a big deal.

Yeah, it's great. There were some issues on Jelly Bean with it, probably because they were updating the GPS servers but now there are fixes if it doesn't work well

With jelly bean it is ultra smooth and fast my GPS locks within 8-10 second love Google now has helped with traffic on the way to work finds you alternate routes to get around traffic and to work. Battery life is good can go all day with moderate use you won't be disappointed. Oh and did I mention updates the gsm gets the first and fast no waiting for the carriers to modify and test you get it straight from Google. That should be worth its weight in gold alone. The best decision I ever made period.

There's nothing wrong with the speakerphone. I routinely take phonecalls while driving, people hear me fine and I hear them perfectly. It's pretty much the best hands-free experience I've ever had, and that includes the amazing Nokia E71 that had a speakerphone I thought I'd never see equaled again.
GPS is also fine, fix is quick, and it doesn't seem to lose the signal at all.
Euro GSM Gnexus user here, by the way.

I might as well give you my opinion as well... Soundwise the phone is ok although markedly worse than my Nokia N9. Still way better than my Sonyericsson Arc S, and definitely a great phone for listening to music. It's very fast and you'll probably be fine with it for the next two years or so unless you're a gamer or you enjoy running benchmarks or something. I find the "naked" Android experience superior to Samsung's skin but if you like Samsung Android phones you'll have a lot of getting used to do. The 3.5 headphone jack, by the way, is at the bottom. This may, or may not, annoy you. I feel it's the correct place for them to be but you may not, so make sure you won't get annoyed.
I can find no major fault with the phone other than it not having an sd-card slot, but frankly it's been much less of an issue than I thought it'd be. Google Music works very well for synchronising my music before I leave home (I don't have unlimited internet), and I've learned to manage my nandroid backups a bit better rather than accumulating tens of gigs of useless files. It may be an issue for you though, so make sure you can live with 16Gb.
I also feel the Gnexus looks and feels better than the S3. I don't like the plastic look of the S3, and I absolutely love the slightly curved screen of the Gnexus, that simply looks like the more expensive phone.
I have no idea which of the two has the better development community, but that's probably a moot point since with the Nexus you're pretty much guaranteed a Google update to the latest Android the moment they announce it for the next year and a half, give or take.
I specifically chose the Gnexus rather than the S3; price wasn't much of a factor to be honest, and I found that the Nexus would be a phone I was willing to stick with for the next year or so, while the main advantage of the S3 was, in my opinion, that should I decide to sell it in the coming months it would certainly not lose much of its value.
Compared to some other phones the loud speaker isn't very loud. Compared to a GS2 or GS3 its a little quiet. Other than that, gps works as it should and no strange problems with using headphones. My only issue is the loud speaker.
But thats my phone, so other may agree or disagree

I have the S3, HTC One X and the nexus. The HTC has the best screen and camera by far. The s3 has the advantage of being able to swap the battery and the sd card but I prefer the nexus overall, mainly because of JB. It is just great.

sry that's exactly what I meant... I came from the LG Optimus speed/2x/P-990 which apart from all its shortcomings (hint: ALOT) had truly awesome speakers right at the bottom producing some nice loud volume. the GNex has a tiny speaker with a tiny grill on its back and that makes for some difference. again, it's not been a dealbreaker for me because else it's a damn fine phone and now even alot better with JB running smooth as silk.

The major issue with Galaxy nexus today is the Purple Color Tint issue. When you bring down brightness to zero level or of you're watching any dark picture or movie everything gonna be the ugly cheap purple color spread over. This issue is most of the brand new devices across the board from USA to Europe to far east... Everywhere.. Please have got good device either by luck or after a dozen times replacement...
Expect this issue the phone is a powerhouse and no other device can really impress a real Google/Android lover

I have a Galaxy Nexus and I love the thing but holy hell the audio on this thing is pathetic. I had a Droid Charge prior to this which was a total piece of **** but the Camera and especially the audio were amazing! It got even better after loading a Voodoo Kernel and I was able to use my phone as a replacement for my iPod.
Now I'm on the Galaxy Nexus and I love the phone, everything about it is amazing, except the sound is pathetic. Even with the Xperia and Bravia engines and all that it's just terrible. In-call audio is even worse, I'm asking people to repeat themselves almost constantly. What happened with the Droid Charge that they couldn't add in to the Nexus? Does the Nexus 4 have a better audio driver? You would think this would be one of the most important features to such a beautiful phone!
Any thoughts on this?

Yeah I actually just installed this. It's not bad! What settings are you using and what player? Sadly I use Spotify mostly so most the effects don't carry over properly.

Yeah that definitely made an improvement but its a shame that our speaker is such crap and we don't have the more advanced audio internals that other phones have.
SGS 1 probably had the best audio hardware of all Galaxy phones... Everything after was worse... Not sure about the latest.

It's a shame that Samsung had to cheap out on the internals once the screen started getting bigger.
Its really comes down to hardware. In our case, very cheap hardware. There is only so much it can be improved by some software.

Indeed, Galaxy S with Wolfson DAC + voodoo sound by Supercurio was legendary. Yamaha DAC on its successor was a piece of junk.
Do any of you guys know of a non-bulky DAC setup that would work with the Nexus?

Same components except for camera. Economies of scale make that cheaper than cheaping out.
I use bluetooth stereo headphones specifically to get around the GNex's poor audio output.

The audio chip in the galaxy nexus is not poor like you guys say. It may not be a Wolfson but it is one of the better chips out there. If you want bad listen to the Yamaha chip in the galaxy s2.

I am sorry but being better than Yamaha is really nothing to brag Of course I agree with you that Yahaha DAC is a real crap. Audio chip on GN is not bad, but it's worse than its predecessor which is still kind of step backward.
Anyway my best audio experience so far was with galaxy r (tegra2) that was equipped with wolfson DAC.

Its a developer's phone.
Plus the Gnex had a 350 price tag at the time. They have to sacrifice some features to keep it affordable.

I know its off topic but man I wish the GN had a bigger speaker. The audio output is indeed good despite not being Wolfson, as a couple people said but that speaker makes this phone less of a phone than anything.
I'm guessing a lot of you have damaged hearing from over-exposure to loud sounds as I've not once had to ask someone to repeat themselves whilst on a call. Now, it could be down to the network I'm on but the Nexus is 100% fine to me. The only issue I have is the speaker isn't exactly loud but then again neither was my old One X so I'm not too fussed about that - it is a phone after all!

This doesn't make sense. A phone should have a loud speaker so you can definitely hear it ring and notify you.
